Wir hatten es angekündigt, das Thema Cloud wird uns hier im Blog so schnell nicht loslassen: Am Freitag hat nun Oracle sein erstes Unix-Betriebssystem auf den Markt gebracht, das explizit für die Cloud designt wurde: Solaris 11 heißt es und hier ist die Assoziation zu Stanislaw Lems gleichnamigem Science Fiction-Roman durchaus angebracht: Schließlich gilt Cloud Computing als die Technologie der Zukunft schlechthin. Was bietet Solaris 11, welchen Nutzen können die Oracle Partner daraus ziehen? "Kunden können ihre Betriebsabläufe vereinfachen, die Kapazitäten ihrer Rechenzentren erhöhen und Unternehmensanwendungen von Oracle und anderen in einer sicheren, skalierbaren Cloud oder in einer klassischen Unternehmensumgebung laufen lassen“, fasst John Fowler, Executive Vice President, Systems zusammen. Darf‘s auch etwas konkreter sein? Bitte: Oracle Solaris 11 dient ganz einfach dazu, selbst anspruchsvollste Unternehmensanwendungen in privaten, hybriden und Public Clouds zu betreiben. Als vollständig virtualisiertes Betriebssystem verfügt es über integrierte Virtualisierungs-Funktionen, sowohl für Betriebssystem- als auch für Netzwerk- und Speicher-Ressourcen. Die Server-Virtualisierung sorgt für sichere Live-Migration und flexible Einsatzmöglichkeiten – basierend auf Oracle VM für x86- und SPARC-Systeme. Höchste Verfügbarkeit wird erreicht, indem Solaris 11 ein umfassendes Management über die gesamte Infrastruktur hinweg ermöglicht. Oracle Solaris 11 bietet bereits im Standardbetrieb aktive Sicherheit „by default“, wie rollenbasierten Root-Zugriff und Überwachungsfunktionen.   • Flashback Data Archives: Ein gutes Gedächtnis für DBA und Entwickler

    Daten werden gespeichert und zum Teil lange aufbewahrt. Mitunter werden Daten nach ihrer ersten Speicherung geändert, vielleicht sogar mehrfach. Je nach gesetzlicher oder betrieblicher Vorgabe müssen die Veränderungen sogar nachverfolgbar sein. Damit sind zugleich Mechanismen gefordert, die sicherstellen, dass die Folge der Versionen lückenlos ist. Und implizit bedeutet das zusätzlich, dass die Versionen auch vor Löschen und Verändern geschützt sein müssen. Das Versionieren kann über die Anwendung, mit der die Daten auch erfasst werden, erfolgen, über Trigger oder über besondere Werkzeuge. Jede dieser Lösungen hat ihre eigenen Schwächen. Zusätzlich steht die Frage nach dem Schutz vor unerlaubtem Löschen oder Ändern versionierter Daten im Raum. Flashback Data Archives lösen diese Frage, denn sie bieten nicht nur einen wirksamen Mechanismus zum Versionieren von Datensätzen, sondern sie schützen diese Versionen auch vor Veränderung und löschen sie schließlich sogar automatisch nach Ablauf ihrer Aufbewahrungsfrist.Ursprünglich wurden die Archive als eigenständige Option zur Enterprise Edition der Oracle Database 11g unter dem Namen Total Recall eingeführt. Ende Juni 2012 verloren die Flashback Data Archives ihren Status als eigenständige Option. Weil die Archive aber grundsätzlich komprimiert wurden, hat Oracle sie stattdessen zu einem Feature der Advanced Compression Option der Enterprise Edition (ACO) gemacht. Seit der Version 11.2.0.4 der Datenbank ist das Komprimieren aber für die Archive nicht mehr zwangsläufig, sondern optional. Damit gibt es lizenzrechtlich erneut eine Änderung: Wer die Kompression verwendet, der muss nach wie vor ACO lizensieren. Wer die Flashback Data Archives dagegen ohne Kompression verwendet - also zum Beispiel Entwickler -, dem stehen sie ab 11.2.0.4 aufwärts im Lieferumfang aller Editionen der Datenbank zur Verfügung. Diese Änderung ist in den Handbüchern zur Lizensierung der Versionen 11.2 und 12.1 der Datenbank dokumentiert.     TechEd India 2012 is just around the corner and I will be presenting there in two different sessions. On the very first day of this event, my presentation will be all about SQL Server Misconceptions and Resolution – A Practical Perspective. The dictionary tells us that a “misconception” means a view or opinion that is incorrect and is based on faulty thinking or understanding. In SQL Server, there are so many misconceptions. In fact, when I hear some of these misconceptions, I feel like fainting at that very moment! Seriously, at one time, I came across the scenario where instead of using INSERT INTO…SELECT, the developer used CURSOR believing that cursor is faster (duh!). This is my fourth opportunity to present a technical session on SQL Server. Just like the previous years, I decided to present something different.     Das Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) ist die zentrale Stelle zur Verwaltung von SOA Artefakten aller Art, mit dem Ziel, den gesamten Lebenszyklus dieser Artefakte zu begleiten. Es ist wesentliche Grundlage für deren Wiederverwendung, für die Ermittlung von Abhängigkeiten, wie auch für die Bestimmung des Wertes dieser Artefakte, was wiederum für den Nutzen der SOA Implementierung von Bedeutung ist. In AIA 11g wird die aktuelle Version des OER unterstützt und wird zusätzlich ergänzt durch die Project Lifecycle Workbench, in der die funktionale Spezifikation, die Aufteilung der Prozesse, oder beispielsweise die Generierung des Deployment Plans erfolgt.Für die Bereitstellung der Artefakte des Foundation Pack 11g gibt es inzwischen ein zugehöriges AIA Solution Pack für OER, mit dem die entsprechenden Strukturen, sowie die Bestandteile des Foundation Packs 11g, also EBOs, EBMs, EBSs, usw. unabhängig von einer AIA Installation direkt importiert werden können.   • How to go automatically from Suspend into Hibernate?

    Is it possible to make Ubuntu go into Hibernate state from Suspend, aka "Suspend Sedation"? For example, my laptop is set up to go into a Suspend once I close the lid. If then I don't use it for entire day, the battery goes flat, because even in suspend mode the hardware still consumes a small amount of power, and the battery eventually discharges. What I want is to be able to tell Ubuntu that even if it is suspended, it still needs to go into Hibernate after some hours of inactivity. Windows can do that. Ubuntu can be programmed to go into Standby or Hibernate on timer, but not both. Update: I guess I need to be more specific. What I am looking for is this: When I close the lid, the laptop is put into Suspend.   • Questions about Mac Book Pro Keyboard and shortcuts

    I have been researching a lot about this and I cannot seem to find any useful information about this topic, what so ever. I have now been using Ubuntu in one week, and have gotten pretty confident with almost everything. Except keyboard layout and shortcuts. If you know a tutorial or a documents explaining keyboard shortcuts in Ubuntu or linux in general, can you please list it? I use a Mac Book Pro with a Norwegian keyboard, and I have several questions about this: Is there a program for having a consise list of absolutely all keyboard shortcuts, and be able to change them? How do I use my fn keys? (fn button doesnt do the job for some reason) How can I use my alt+letter-key-or-number-key or alt+shift+letter-key-or-number-key to get fancy characters. (Like I do on Mac OS X) How can I swap cmd and ctrl key system wide? Also I really want to be oriented around this subject, since this is the only thing holding me back on Ubuntu, so if there exists some in-depth material on this, it would be great. Also, if there exists some programs or material out there making it easier with Mac hardware I would enjoy that. Sorry if my questions seems vague. Thank you very much Simon

  • Advice: The first-time interviewer's dilemna

    I've been working in my first job for about 2 years now, and I've been "asked" to interview a potential teammate (whom I might have to mentor as well) on pretty short notice (2 days from now). Initially, I had been given a free rein(or so I thought, and hence agreed), but today, I've been told "not to pose bookish questions" - implying I can only ask basic programming puzzles and stuff similar to the 'fizbuzz' question. I strongly believe that not knowing basic algorithmic notations(the haziest ideas of space/time complexities) or the tiniest idea of regular expressions would make working with the guy very difficult for anyone. I know i'm asking for a lot here, but according to you, what would be a comprehensive way to test out the absolutely basic requirements of a CS guy(he has 2 yrs of exp) without sounding too pedantic/bookish etc ? It seems it would be legit to ask C questions/simple puzzles only....but I really do want to have something a bit different from "finding loops in linked lists" that has kind of become the opening statement of most techie interviews !! This is a face-to-face interview with about an hour or more of time - I looked at Steve's basic phone-screen questions, and I was wondering if there exists a guide on "basic face-to-face interview questions" that I can use(or compile from the community's answers here). EDIT: The position is mostly for a kernel level C programming job, with some smattering of C++ required for writing the test framework.

  • Learning to code first game, few questions on basic game development and 3D

    I've been programming for a while, and I'm concurrently learning how to make a basic game and slimdx, and wanted to talk to someone to hopefully get a few pointers. I've read that Tetris is the "Hello, world" of game programming, which made sense to me, so I decided to give it a shot. I've been able to code up a basic version in a few hours, which I'm quite happy with, but I had a few questions about 3D programming. Right now I'm using Direct3D to do display the blocks without any textures (just colored squares). I have a data structure (2d array of bytes, where each byte denotes the presence of a block and its color) which is the "game board," and on every render() call I create a new vertex buffer of the existing squares in the game board, and draw those primitives. This feels very inefficient, and I wondering what would be the idiomatic way of doing this in a 3D world, with matrix/rotations/translation operations. I know 3D is overkill for such a project, but I want to learn any 3d concepts that I can while I'm doing it. I understand that what you'd usually want to do is keep the same vertices/vertex buffers but manipulate them with matrices to achieve rotations/translations, etc. To do so, I assume what would happen is I'd have one vertex buffer for the "active" piece, since that'll be constantly rotated and moved, and have one vertex buffer for the frozen pieces on the bottom of the board, which is pretty much stationary, but will need to be changed/recreated when the active piece becomes frozen. Right now I'm just clearing and redrawing on every render call, which seems like the easiest way to do things, although I wonder if there's a more efficient way to deal with changes. Obviously there are a lot of questions I'm asking here, but if you can even just point me a step or two ahead in terms of how I should be thinking, it'd be great. Thanks

  • Etiquette when asking questions in an IRC channel

    Many larger OSS projects maintain IRC channels to discuss their usage or development. When I get stuck on using a project, having tried and failed to find information on the web, one of the ways I try to figure out what to do is to go into the IRC channel and ask. But my questions are invariably completely ignored by the people in the channel. If there was silence when I entered, there will still be silence. If there is an ongoing conversation, it carries on unperturbed. I leave the channel open for a few hours, hoping that maybe someone will eventually engage me, but nothing happens. So I worry that I'm being rude in some way I don't understand, or breaking some unspoken rule and being ignored for it. I try to make my questions polite, to the point, and grammatical, and try to indicate that I've tried the obvious solutions and why they didn't work. I understand that I'm obviously a complete stranger to the people on the channel, but I'm not sure how to fix this. Should I just lurk in the channel, saying nothing, for a week? That seems absurd too. A typical message I send might be "Hello all - I've been trying to get Foo to work, but I keep on getting a BarException. I tried resetting the Quux, but this doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I could try?"

    I recently heard of the concept of a Legacy Code Retreat. Since I have attended and helped facilitate some normal Code Retreats I thought it might be interesting in trying a Legacy Code Retreat, but I have a few questions on how a legacy CR differs from a normal one. If anyone has attended a Legacy CR and has some suggestions on how best to host these event’s please leave a comment on what has worked for you in the past or if you have any answers to my questions below… Should you restrict the languages that people can do the sessions in? In the normal CR’s I have been involved in the past we have had people attend and code in their programming language of choice. A normal CR lends itself to  this because each session starts with no code. With a legacy CR each session seems to start with an existing code base. Is there some sort of limitation on the languages that people can work in during the sessions? If not, how do you give them a base to start from? What happens as the beginning of each session? In the normal CR that I have attended each session would have a constraint set on it – i.e. no if statements used, no primitives, etc. With a legacy CR it seems more like patterns for refactoring are learned. Does the facilitator explain the pattern used before the session starts or are they just given a code base to start from and an objective to achieve

    Sky doesn't seem to understand what their own errors mean, so I cobbled together an understanding from some other posts and managed to get it working.When you see the error [t6013-c1501] instead of your TV programme in Sky Go, it seems to mean:'You registered a device, but then changed the hardware, so now I'm confused!'In other words, the Digital rights management (DRM) used between Sky Go and Silverlight stored an old fingerprint of your PC, but rather than recognising this and allowing you to remove the device, it just disappears from the 'Manage Devices' page.DISCLAIMER: Perform the following steps at your own risk. It worked for me, but I didn't care if it broke stuff. If you care....don't do it!So, to fix this I did the following:1. Login to Sky Go and click 'Watch live TV' from the home page. It will attempt to show Sky News and fail with the error [t6013-c1501].2. Right click on the error and you should see the Menu option 'Silverlight'. Select this and a dialog should appear. Click the 'Application Storage' tab and delete any entry that relates to sky go. Clcik OK to close the dialog.3. Open explorer and navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady4. Rename the file mspr.hds to mspr.hds.OLD5. Go back to the browser and click F5. You may need to logout/login (not sure).Note: Don't rename/delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady or you will get the error [t6000-c1501]. The folder must exist in order for the new file to be created by Silverlight. Techie talk:So whoever wrote the code to create a new mspr.hds file didn't write code to check the folder existed causing what I assume is a generic error t6000, probably something like:catch (Exception ex) { WriteToLog("Oops, something broke!"); }#

  • Matching users based on a series of questions

    I'm trying to figure out a way to match users based on specific personality traits. Each trait will have its own category. I figure in my user table I'll add a column for each category: id name cat1 cat2 cat3 1 Sean ? ? ? 2 Other ? ? ? Let's say I ask each user 3 questions in each category. For each question, you can answer one of the following: No, Maybe, Yes How would I calculate one number based off the answers in those 3 questions that would hold a value I can compare other users to? I was thinking having some sort of weight. Like: No -> 0 Maybe -> 1 Yes -> 2 Then doing some sort of meaningful calculation. I want to end up with something like this so I can query the users and find who matches close: id name cat1 cat2 cat3 1 Sean 4 5 1 2 Other 1 2 5 In the situation above, the users don't really match. I'd want to match with someone with a +1 or -1 of my score in each category. I'm not a math guy so I'm just looking for some ideas to get me started.

  • Interviewing consultants

    I've interviewed a number of candidates for salaried positions. I was recently informed that we are hiring a consultant for a few months to help us develop a native iPhone application. We are a .NET shop and none of us have any experience with iPhone development. I've also heard rumors that we are planning to hire more consultants in the future to help develop on other various platforms. How should I interview these consultants, considering that I have no experience with this type of development? Without regards to platform specific questions, what are the things I need to keep in mind when interviewing consultants? Normally when I interview candidates, I'll ask questions that I know the answer to. I would never ask a candidate something that I don't know how to answer. Since this is a different situation, what do I need to ask in order to make sure they are subject matter experts in their respective fields? Is it appropriate to ask specific questions that we'll need to eventually solve during the interview?
