  • How Can I Test My Computer’s Power Supply?

    You’re concerned your computer troubles stem from a failing (or outright fried) power supply unit. How can you test the unit to be sure that it’s the source of your hardware headaches? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Sam Hoice has some PSU concerns: My computer powered off the other day on its own, and now when I push the power button, nothing happens. My assumption would naturally be that the power supply is done (possibly well done) but is there any good way to test this before I buy a new one? How can Sam test things without damaging his current computer or other hardware?   The Answer SuperUser contributor Grant writes: Unplug the power supply from any of the components inside the computer (or just remove it from the computer completely). USE CAUTION HERE (Though you’d only be shocked with a max of 24 volts) Plug the power supply into the wall. Find the big 24-ish pin connector that connects to the motherboard. Connect the GREEN wire with the adjacent BLACK wire. The power supply’s fan should start up. If it doesn’t then it’s dead. If the fan starts up, then it could be the motherboard that’s dead. You can use a multimeter to check if there is power output from the power supply. Adrien offers a solution for readers who may not be comfortable jamming wires into their power supply unit’s MOBO connector: Most well-stocked geek-stores sell a “power-supply tester” that has all the appropriate connectors to plug each part of your PSU into, with spiffy LEDs indicating status of the various rails, connectors for IDE/SATA/floppy power cables, etc. They run ~$20 US.   • Resetting Update Manager

    How can I fix Update Manager in 12.04, which hangs when I try to install any update, while sudo apt-get upgrade works fine? I suspect it has something to do with my python installation.   • Gnome-Network-Manager Config File Migration

    I think I have an issue with gnome-network-manager, I used to have a lot of connections configured, Wireless, Wired and VPN. After upgrading to 12.04 (from 11.10) I lost every configuration. I realized that the configs that used to be saved in $HOME/.gconf/system/networking/connections now are being saved in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/.   • How to Deal with an out of touch "Project manager"

    This "manager" is 70+ yrs old and a math genius. We were tasked with creating a web application. He loves SQL and stored procedures. He first created this in MS access. For the web app I had to take his DB migrate to SQL server. His first thought was to have a master stored procedure with a WAITFOR Handling requests from users. I eventually talked him out of that and use asp.net mvc. Then eventually use the asp.net membership. Now the web app is a mostly handles requests from the pages that is passed to stored procedures. It is all stored procedure driven. The business logic as well. Now we are having an one open DB connection per user logged in plus 1. I use linq to sql to check 2 tables and return the values thats it period. So 25 users is a load. He complains why my code is bad cause his test driver stored procedure simulates over 100 users with no issue. What are the best arguments for not having the business logic not all in stored procedures?? How should I deal with this?? I am giving an abbreviated story of course. He is a genius part owner of the company all the other owners trust him because he is a genius. and quoting -"He gets things done. old school".

    I'm using ubuntu 10.10 and recently my package manager has stopped working because of some problems with dependencies or something. I can't upgrade, install or uninstall anything at all. This is a huge problem. I couldn't find a solution to this with google so I'm asking here for help.     Today I bought a new gaming headset (Gx-Gaming Lychas), and when I tried to record some gameplay-comentary I noticed that there always is a static background noise, I just recorded an example so   • Mapping XFCE4/xRDP sessions to users

    I have Ubuntu 13.10 with Xubuntu Desktop - XFCE4. I'm trying to use XDRP to allow MS Windows users to login to the machine with their own user. I've been a lot around the houses with this! I've find two half-way solutions, but can't get them to work as I'd like... 1) in /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini I set the port to -1 [xrdp1] name=sesman-Xvnc lib=libvnc.so username=ask password=ask ip=127.0.0.1 port=-1 each time any user logs on they get a new session - they can never go back to their original session 2) in /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini I set the port to 5912 (e.g) [xrdp1] name=sesman-Xvnc lib=libvnc.so username=ask password=ask ip=127.0.0.1 port=5912 each time any user logs on they always log on to the same session irrespective of their logon details ??) I found a mid-way solution, to create a lot of sessions by adding adding additional options in the xrdp.ini e.g. [xrdp8] name=Bob's Logon lib=libvnc.so username=ask password=ask ip=127.0.0.1 port=5913 [xrdp9] name=Jill's Logon lib=libvnc.so username=ask password=ask ip=127.0.0.1 port=5914 and so on, but he problem with this is that Jill can still log into Bob's remote session ??? Is it possible to to do what I'm trying to do? Maybe I have to use different tools?

  • Computer does not switch on after power outage

    VOLTAGE DROP OFF FOR PC does not restart The other day my pc was turned off due to power outage. Since that time the computer would not turn on again, no sign of life, it seems dead. I did several tests, changed the power outlet and disconnect the wires ... also I have reseated the cards ... but the result is that nothing changes. What can I do? Could there may be damage to the hardware due to the power outage? Note: the voltage drop is not due to a lightning storm and so is not due to damaged components (burnt card etc ...)   • Dell PS/2 Keyboard Stops Working Randomly After Power Disturbance

    I have a Dell PS/2 keyboard connected to a desktop PC running Slackware 12.2 & Windows XP. After a recent, brief power outage/disturbance at my home, the keyboard has begun to quit working at random times. It has stopped at POST, but not by keyboard error -- I have to press the F1 key to continue booting, and at times the keyboard has already stopped working. Other times, the keyboard will work perfectly for a long time (a day or more) before it finally quits. It has stopped at boot, in Windows XP, and in Slackware. The led lights continue to work regardless. I have tried another PS/2 keyboard and it seems to be immune to this problem. The USB mouse always works. Does anyone have any ideas about how this might have happened? If this is related to the power disturbance that killed the power to the running PC, is it feasible that it would have only fried the keyboard itself (which still works sometimes) and not the PS/2 port nor anything else? I have experienced no other problems since the event.

  • Some Power Supply Cable Questions?

    I am building a new PC and I haven't done this in a few years. It will have all the latest tech stuff. I got my PSU in the mail and I am looking over the cables (it has a lot) I thought it was a mudular PSU so I could only use the cables I need but instead it is a hybrid (some wires attached and some can be added/removed instead of all of then being removable). 1) So I am curious, I believe all my hard drives and optical drives are powered off of a sata power cable so does that mean I probably do not need any of the 4 pin molex cables? Or are these used for other things? 2) I know the 24-pin cable goes to my motherboard. 3) I have some 6-pin cables that are labeled pci-e which is new to me. I read these are for some grapghic cards and stuff. I have 2 grapghic cards but they do not require a seperate pci-e power wire be hooked to them. So are these pci-e wires just to power pci-express cards? Or for other things as well? 4) I have a 4pin ATX 12v wire, what is this for? 5) 8 pin EPS, what is this for?

  • Where do SATA drives get their power when using a PCI SATA controller on oler PCs?

    I've been looking into PCI SATA controller cards online for an older PC and noticed that the ports only have the SATA cable connector and the Power supply does not have the SATA power connectors. I also had a few external eSATA drives which don't power up unless I also plugin the USB cable. Therefore I realize that SATA and eSATA do not carry power and need power else where. When converting older PCs to use a PCI SATA controller how do you provide power to the SATA drives? Anticipating the answer to be some kind of converter cable (which I was unable to search for) then can older power supplies handle added drives? (Assuming a 4 port SATA controller means 4 more drives the power supply has to endure). Or do you have to get a second poer supply and kinda jerry-rig it into an old case?

  • PSU aka Power Supply won't turn off and No Power_Good - Safe to keep using?

    The title is the symptoms of my problem. I mainly chose this title for search engines so people can know why this is happening since I see a lot of uncertainty when it comes to this problem. I do have a question related to the source of the problem though. First of all, Inserting the power to the power supply automatically turns on my computer. Using a power supply tester, the tester automatically turns on without me having to push the button to test the PSU. lol. The PG (Power Good) signal is missing. The strange thing is my computer still turns on (OS boots, etc) considering a missing power good signal. Is it really that unsafe to use the power supply when it's missing the power good signal? All the voltages seem to be in check. Here's a picture: Power Supply Tester Readout And by safe (considering the readout) in the sense that is it likely my components (cpu, mobo, etc) could be damaged?

  • Update Manager unable to get updates

    In last few days my Ubuntu 11.10 update manager is unable to get new updates. When I checked update log I saw that for couple of updates it says "Network isn't available". For other updates it downloaded logs and and internet connection also works fine. Unable to attached screenshot due to SPAM prevention policy. But for below Release gpgv:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_Release.gpg it says "Network isn't available" For all other Releases it is downloading fine. And due to this I dont see any update available in last 10 days.
