Does anyone check the domain of an email address as part of their verification steps? eg. Confirm that gmail.com exists if the user specified [email protected] as their address.
I've been away from GUI programming for quite some time so please pardon my ignorance.
I would like to attempt the following:
Write a Mac OSX app but still be able to port to Win/Linux (i.e. C++ core with Obj-C GUI)
Avoid Qt/other toolkits on OSX (i.e. talk to Cocoa directly - I feel that many Qt apps I use stick out like sore thumbs compared to the rest of my system)
Not as important, but it would be nice to avoid Visual Studio if it means I can have the freedom to use newer C++ features even on Windows if they help create better code.
I believe this configuration might get me what I'm looking for:
Core C++ Static Library
OSX GUI (Cocoa)
Windows GUI (Qt+MinGW?) OR (no new C++ features, Visual Studio + ManagedC++/C#/????)
Linux GUI (Qt)
Once again, sorry for my ignorance but is this possible? Is this sane? Are there any real-world open source examples accomplish something like this?

In this case browser is sending both If-None-Match and If-Modified-Since. My question is on the server side do I need to match BOTH etag and If-Modified-Since before I send 304.
Or
Should I just look at etag and send 304 if etag is a match. In this case I am ignoring If-Modified-Since .
I'd like to make a 301 rewrite to the sites's index without any querystring. Like this:
http://example.com/anypage.asp?anyvar=anyvalue
To:
http://example.com/
Here's a real example:
http://atipico.com.br/conteudo.asp?P_categ=23
I am trying to follow this: http://wiki.nginx.org/NginxHttpRewriteModule#rewrite
(The commented are my attempts):
location ~ /conteudo\.asp(.*)$ {
#rewrite ^ / permanent;
#rewrite ^ /? permanent;
#return 301 /;
#return 301 /?;
#if ($args) { return 301 /; }
}
It always rewrites to http://atipico.com.br/?P_categ=23
Any ideas?
I've searched, but I can't find anything that explains why Microsoft started labelling new versions of Windows Server (and now SQL Server) as R2 releases.
If they're new releases, why not simply give them new names?
Or is there something going on with upgrade pricing or licensing?

I'm archiving my DVD collection. My goal is to be able to play them back in Windows Media Center. For feature-length DVDs, I'm using AnyDVD and CloneDVD, which is working well.
For playing back TV shows (and other episodic content), I'm using Media Browser, which doesn't support a VIDEO_TS folder per episode. It expects the shows to be broken up into one file per episode (e.g. "Willo the Wisp - S01E12.avi").
For this, I'm attempting to use Handbrake, which, for extracting the episodes from DVD (or already-ripped VIDEO_TS folder), is working pretty well.
The problem that I have is that the default x264 encoder over-compresses the resulting video stream, which results in hideous artifacts in animated shows. The aforementioned Willo the Wisp is a particularly bad example, because the original DVD is particularly "noisy".
If I switch to using the ffmpeg encoder, the artifacts are gone in Windows Media Player, but I can't get the resulting files to play back in Windows Media Center. I see the first frame, and then there's an error message.
I've installed the CCCP codec collection, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
So: what's the best way to convert VIDEO_TS to individual episode files for playback in Windows Media Center?
On Windows 7, applications signed by "Microsoft Windows Publisher" don't prompt for elevation when UAC is turned on.
Is there any way that I can add my own code-signing certificate to the UAC exclusions list, to get the same behaviour?
I've got a couple of utilities that I always want to run elevated, so if I could sign them myself and install my self-signed CA certificate somewhere, and then bypass the UAC prompt, that'd save me time every morning when I log in.
My workstation is running Windows Server 2008. I do not have local admin privileges. I have a Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (i.e. Core+Hyper-V) box. On that box, I do have local admin privileges.
I can Remote Desktop to the box; Hyper-V Manager works fine (outside of Server Manager). It's just that there are some things that are easier to do in Server Manager (partition disks, etc.) than at the command line.
I'd like to use Server Manager on my workstation to manage the Hyper-V box.
However:
When I run Server Manager on my workstation, it prompts for elevation, and won't then let me connect to another server.
If I attempt to run MMC and then add "Server Manager" as a Snap-in, it doesn't prompt me for the server name. Then it complains that I'm not an Administrator. It doesn't provide for connecting to another server.
The Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) are for Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC. These don't install on Windows 2008.
I'm looking at message queueing for client/server communication in a new product. One of the problems with MSMQ is that it's not installed by default on most Windows desktops, and that it doesn't seem to be available as a redistributable for inclusion in our MSI.
Given that the administrator will have access to Microsoft SMS or ConfigMgr or similar, how do I persuade them that it's easy to install? That is: how do I automate installation of the MSMQ components?
I've always been able to stream movies stored on my Windows 7 computer's local hard drive to the Xbox 360 with no problems. A few weeks ago, though, I got a Seagate Dockstar NAS device and moved my movies to it. Ever since then, I can't seem them in the Xbox.
I've tried several different things. When I try to add the mapped drive to the Media Player library, it says that it can't share the files. (I don't have any security on the NAS drive). I've tried creating a symlink to a local drive, but that doesn't help. Neither does adding the UNC path directly.
The Dockstar seems to have its own Xbox share capability, but it doesn't respect my folder structure - it brings over every video file on the drive in a single list, including several hundred home videos that aren't playable on the Xbox.
Is there any way to use Media Player (or the Zune software) to share files stored on a NAS drive? Barring this, is there a lightweight, free server that will allow me to share these files while maintaining my folder structure?
I'm working on a VBScript to do a weekly reboot of all machines on our network. I want to run this script via Task Scheduler. The script runs at 3:00 AM, but there is a small chance that users may still be on the network at that time, and I need to give them the option to terminate the reboot. If they do so, I would like the reboot to occur the next night at 3:00 AM. I've set Task Scheduler up to repeat in this way.
So far, so good. The problem is that if the user selects "Cancel" in my script, the Task Scheduler does not see my task as failed, and won't run it again the next night.
Any ideas? Can I pass an errorcode to task scheduler or otherwise abort the task via VBScript?
My code is below:
Option Explicit
Dim objShell, intShutdown
Dim strShutdown, strAbort
' -r = restart, -t 600 = 10 minutes, -f = force programs to close
strShutdown = "shutdown.exe -r -t 600 -f"
set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
objShell.Run strShutdown, 0, false
'go to sleep so message box appears on top
WScript.Sleep 100
' Input Box to abort shutdown
intShutdown = (MsgBox("Computer will restart in 10 minutes. Do you want to cancel computer restart?",vbYesNo+vbExclamation+vbApplicationModal,"Cancel Restart"))
If intShutdown = vbYes Then
' Abort Shutdown
strAbort = "shutdown.exe -a"
set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
objShell.Run strAbort, 0, false
End if
Wscript.Quit
Appreciate any thoughts.
I use Google to administer my e-mails and I run Nginx + PHP. If I want to check incoming mail to interact with each message subject (to trigger an action), as far as I know, I have only two options: 1) access Google via IMAP PHP / cron job or 2) forward the messages to my server where I can have a subdomain set to pipe the messages to a PHP script. Frankly, I'd preffer the first option because I have already all the IMAP functions tested and done. And if the second solution is really the best, I'd preffer to use Postfix. However, id like some light grom somebody who has already browsed this unknown waters. Thank you.

I am trying to uninstall Microsoft Internet Explorer. The procedures explained all over the web involve going through the control panel to Programs and Features. If MSIE is listed there, then uninstall in the usual way. If it is not listed there, click Turn Windows features on and off and deactivate it there. But Internet Explorer is not listed in either place.
Background: I initiated some process in MSIE a couple of months ago that caused all web pages to no longer save login information or remain logged in when requested. As you can tell from the way I described that, I don't remember what it was and have no way to simply reverse it. I had a few problems with .NET Framework as well. So, I've uninstalled all browsers except MSIE and uninstalled .NET Framework. I've reinstalled .NET Framework and all other browsers. I have not been able to uninstall MSIE.
Have Tried: I tried installing over the existing installation, but auto-update must be keeping it nicely up to date. The attempt simply produced an information window telling me that my current version is more up-to-date than the new version I tried to install.
Hi,
I need to install a pair of 1Tb disks into a server that has a hardware RAID card.
How long is it likely to take to configure the RAID controller - sticking the disks in is only a 5 minute job, but is there likely to be significant downtime while both disks mirror (even though they are both blank)? Am I looking at 10 minutes over all, or more like 2 hours for this to happen?
Thanks
Ok Here is where I am... I have an HP Proliant with 8 Drives configured as RAID5, and C:\Drive Disk 0 and D:\ drive Disk 1. I need to add more space to Disk 0 (C:) and have 150GB available on Disk 1 (D:).
I tested the Disk Mgmt on D:\ and freed up 4GB which now shows to be Unallocated. How do I add the 4GB of Unallocated to the c:\?
When I click on C:\ the Menu shows "Extend Volume" as Grayed Out not Black but the D:\ Drive shows Extend Volume as selectable/black.
I have a spreadsheet that has formulas that I want to lock, once the information in the row is completed, i.e. there is a discharge date, I want the end-user to be able to delete the row and insert it into another worksheet. I do not want to use VBA, I was successful in sequencing the protection steps, but now can not repeat the process. There has to be a way to use the protect sheet "delete rows" check box and locked cells together to enable this process
I'm having an odd problem on one of my Windows 7 machines. At machine startup, explorer.exe is working properly - I can use the Start menu, click on desktop icons, etc. At some later point, though, I lose the ability to interact with desktop icons. I can't double-click to open files on the desktop, and I can't right-click to see the properties window.
Oddly enough the Start menu still works properly, and I can still open an Explorer window into my desktop and access everything. I can get around the problem by killing explorer.exe and restarting it using Task Manager, but it's annoying to have to do this over and over.
Does anyone have any ideas? I took a look at startup files with msconfig and didn't see any obvious problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Occasionally, I find my TEMP and TMP environment variables set to C:\Windows\TEMP. They should be set to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp, and are configured correctly in System Properties.
This manifests itself as error messages like the following:
---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class
(result=1).
error CS2001: Source file 'C:\Windows\TEMP\gb_pz65v.0.cs' could not be found
error CS2008: No inputs specified
...which occurs in various .NET applications (in particular Visual Studio 2010 or SQL Server Management Studio). Alternatively, SQL Server Management Studio will report:
Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: viewInfo (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlStudio.Explorer)
If I run PowerShell elevated, then $env:TEMP is set correctly. If I run PowerShell non-elevated, then it's not. I believe that it should be set correctly in both cases. If not, it's the wrong way round.
The same is true for CMD.EXE.
Rebooting fixes it, temporarily, until something breaks it again. Presumably something loaded into Explorer.exe is messing with its environment variables, but what?
The values in the registry are correct, even while this is happening:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment has TEMP = %SYSTEMROOT%\Temp
HKCU\Environment has TEMP = %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp
By setting a breakpoint on shell32!RegenerateUserEnvironment, I'm able to trap it when it happens, but I still don't know why explorer.exe is reading the wrong environment variables.
I can reproduce it consistently by broadcasting a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message (I wrote a one-line C++ program to do this). Watching the activity in Process Monitor shows that explorer.exe doesn't even look at HKCU\Environment.
What is going on?
I'm running Windows 8 Pro (x64) on my home desktop. Everything is working well (very very differently, but well) except for the Store application. Several days ago, I got an update notification that listed 8 application updates. I hit the link to install the updates, but only six of them installed.
Now I have Updates(2) showing in the store's notification area, and whenever I try to look for the updates the Store goes into "searching" mode (the circles/dots animation) and never finishes the search. Is there any way that I can reset the Store app? I have tried re-downloading it with no success.
I have two outlooks 2007 open on two different machines logged in to the same account. The issue is I have is with client-only rules for sound alerts executing intermittently. All other rules work correctly, because they are run on the Exchange Server, but the client-only ones seem to pick and choose when to produce sounds. Is there something I can do to make my client-only rules run reliably on one particular instance of outlook?
