• Need a non-Mac keyboard alternative for Mac users

  I'm a Macbook Pro user. I like Apple products in general, but I hate their keyboards. I work on my computer/laptop 10+ hours a day, so I would like to have a keyboard that is Mac-compatible and ergonomic. I found this one on Amazon. It is specifically made for Mac. However, I would like to get some suggestions from people who found good keyboards for Mac.

This is great for everything except Windows Live Messenger. I need to have my domain messenger account accessible. • Allowing users to install fonts in Windows 7 (through GPO)

  Hi, This is somewhat related to my previous question, http://serverfault.com/questions/48155/why-do-installed-fonts-disappear-after-reboot. Having got the font install issue sorted out under XP just fine, recently we've got a Windows 7 workstation and I've created a special GPO for it. Initially it was UAC that was demanding administrative access to C:\windows\fonts despite the fact the policy dictates that directory is writable (as is the relevant registry entries, on XP anyway). The issue now though is that when I try to copy a font or hit install it claims that the font "does not appear to be a valid font". This happens with every type of font as well. Is there some new and special consideration when allowing these changes on Windows 7? Any input would be appreciated. Many thanks, Doug

  I just deployed a new Fedora 17 server on the Amazon EC2. I was able to log in as ec2-user with my generated keypair, but I cannot log in under normal circumstances as a user I created. • Varnish configuration to only cache for non-logged in users

  I have a Ruby on Rails application fronted by varnish+nginx. As most of the sites content is static unless you are a logged in user, I want to cache the site heavily with varnish when a user is logged out but only to cache static assets when they are logged in. When a user is logged in they will have the cookie 'user_credentials' present in their Cookie: header, in addition I need to skip caching on /login and /sessions in order that a user can get their 'user_credentials' cookie in the first place. Rails by default does not set a cache friendly Cache-control header, but my application sets a "public,s-max-age=60" header when a user is not logged in. Nginx is set to return 'far future' expires headers for all static assets. The configuration I have at the moment is totally bypassing the cache for everything when logged in, including static assets — and is returning cache MISS for everything when logged out. • Xforwarding doesn't allow for switching users

• Linux: Managing users, groups and applications

  I am fairly new to linux admin so this may sound quite a noob question. I have a VPS account with a root access I need to install Tomcat, Java on it and later other open source applications as well. Installation for all of these is as simple as unzipping the .gz in a folder. My questions are A) Where should I keep all these programs? In Windows, I typically have a folder called programs under c:\ where I unzip all applications. I plan to have something similar here as well. Currently, I have all these under apps folder under/root- which I am guessing is a bad idea B) To what group should Tom belong to ? I would need a user - say Tom who can simply execute these programs. Do I need to create a new group? or just add Tom to some existing group ? C) Finally- Am I doing something really stupid by installing all these application by simply unzipping them? I mean an alternate way would be to use Yup or RPM or something like that to install these applications. Given my familiarity and (tight budget) that seems too much to me. I feel uncomfortable running commands which i don't understand too well

• rsync not copying hard links

  I have two computers (both MacBook Airs) for which I sync one directory tree in both, but not the entire hard drive or any other directories. Let's say on computer A the directory is /Users/aellett/projects Let's say on computer B the directory is /Users/bellett/projects Generally, I'll log into computer B and then remotely connect to computer A as user 'aellett'. As super user I sync the two project directories as follows: rsync -av /Volumes/aellett/projects/ /Users/bellett/projects/ and this works as expected. On both computers I have another file letter.txt in a different directory which is not getting synced. Let's say on computer A the file is found in /Users/aellett/letters On computer B the file is found in /Users/bellett/correspondence Generally, I don't want to share what's not included in /Users/<username>/projects. But I do want to share this particular file. So on both computer I made a correspondence directory in projects. And then I made hard links as follows On computer A: ln /Users/aellett/letters/letter.txt /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt On computer B: ln /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt The next time I synced the two computers I did the following rsync -av -H /Volumes/aellett/projects/ /Users/bellett/projects/ When I checked on computer B, /Users/bellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt was correctly synced. But, the hardlink to /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt was no longer there. In other words, /Users/bellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt was identical to /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt but it differed from /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt. Since these two files were hard linked on both computers, I expected them to still have the hard link. Why are my hard links not being preserved?

  In Outlook 2007, when in Calendar view, there's a category (group) of calendars on the left hand bar titled "People's Calendars". We're migrating from a system where all employees have access to read and write to all other employees' calendars (via a 3rd party Web Calendar). Is it possible, from an admin level, to auto-populate this People's Calendars category in everyone's Outlook with all the employees in the company, and grant everyone read / write access to everyone else's calendars?   I have the MD of a client of ours who has a Windows 7 Profile that is currently 14GB thanks to Videos/Music and Documents. The first thing we did was to switch from roaming to local. What I need to know is now the profile is local am I wasting my time by reducing it any further? Does it really make a difference to performance having a large local user profile? • Exchange 2003 IMAP not working for some users

  We normally don't have a need for IMAP connections from outside the company network but in order to allow a one user to use IMAP on a portable device I've turned it on and opened port 993 on the firewall. When the user in question was unable to get connected I tested this using Outlook remotely. Start by creating a new IMAP account in Outlook using a test account. No problems, it worked perfectly. Now try the same thing using the account of the user who actually needs to connect and it's a no-go. Outlook simply keeps prompting for logon credentials. Next I tried using my own account and that too failed. Testing with a couple of other accounts worked perfectly. Interestingly enough, with my own account I've used IMAP on a MAC before (internally) without a problem and I'm not aware of anything that has changed which could affect IMAP on my account. Checking the user settings in ADUC showed that all accounts have the same Exchange protocol settings. Specifically, IMAP is enabled. A check of the event logs on the server reveals no entries for the connection attempts, making this kind of difficult to debug. Has anyone here encountered such a situation and, even more importantly, what caused it?

• Problem with authentication of users via IE when using "host header value"

  Hi, I'm trying to set multiple web sites up in an IIS 6. I've got a working virtual site residing under the default web site, but if I create a new web site in the IIS and asign it a host header value, let it point to the very same file structure as in the prevoiusly mentioned site and finally asign windows integrated security only to the site - I still cannot log in to the new site using MSIE 6 or 8 but FF 3.5 works fine. • Internal users can't receive email sent by application

  We have an application server that hosts a CRM application. It is using SMTP on it's own server to send emails. If I send an email using the application to [email protected], it shows up in my inbox. If I send an email to [email protected], it never shows up. It doesn't matter what address I put in for @MyCompanyDomain.com, they never get through. Any email addresses outside our domain/firewall get through. We're using Exchange 2007 and when I look at the message tracking logs, the missing messages don't show up there, either. Is there something I need to configure in Exchange or the SMTP server on the application server? I can't figure out why emails get outside the firewall but internal emails never show up. • Deny Access to directories from unauthorized users

  I am not being paid for this and I would like to know the quickest way to do the following. A former client has a page which only members can access. This page links to a number of galleries which he only wants members to access. The galleries are not protected by any kind of authentication. What I assume is the quickest way to do this is to create a .htaccess file which only allow people to view the site when the come from a certain referrer. Would this work? My current thinking is that I could use a php script to deploy a .htaccess file into each of the gallery directories. (There are around a 100 at the moment.) I found this link which might be what I am after but to be honest I really don't get it. Is my thinking sound?

• cygwin sshd fails to allocate pty for some users

  I have (finally) got sshd working under cygwin on Win7 - well, sort of. The sshd runs as user 'cyg_server'. I'm able to successfully ssh to my computer using that same user name. However, if I attempt to ssh using my normal (Windows) user name, it fails trying to allocate a pty for my login session. • Windows Server 2012 Metro shortcut icons do not show for other users

  I have installed SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 on my Windows Server 2012 machine using a dedicated domain install account. When I log into the same machine with a user account, all the icons for these applications are missing! I can still access the applications by finding them in 'Program Files', however it is very annoying. (For example, I'm not exactly sure where the SharePoint PowerShell is located, and frankly I don't want to know either) In previous versions of Windows Server, the Icons always showed up in the Start Menu. Does anyone know how I can copy the shortcuts in one account to another?

• Forward one RDP port on one machine to multiple external users at the same time

  We have a windows server 2003 machine with rdp service listening on the standard port 3389. For security reasons this port is not opened on the router, but we have freesshd service running and a remote admin can login via ssh and this port is forwarded to external port 33001 for the first external user. This works great. Now we have another admin who wants to work remote (he uses a different windows account, but needs to work on the same machine.) So this is basically a ssh port forwarding question. Will the other user be able to login at the same time using the same port 33001 ? Please keep in mind that there will be a second tunnel, and this second tunnel will also use the local port 3389 on the windows server.

• Win2k8R2 / IIS 7.5 - users getting 503 response, no 503 error reported in logs

  I've got 2 web servers with mirrored content. There's a load balancer sitting in front of them. Starting yesterday we've been getting people complaining about 503 errors. i can't find any 503 errors in the IIS log file. However the server host is saying these errors are due to .Net errors in our website which are causing the app pool to recycle. And the rapid fail protection is set to the default of 5 failures in 5 minutes. But i have not seen 5 failures in the event log in that short of a time span. Can anyone help me confirm if the 503 responses are indeed being generated by the app pools recycling? Or are these errors coming from somewhere else? My guess at the time was their load balancer was the one actually returning the 503 error. But that was just a guess.

I have setup Firefox under a localuseradmin with the file types set to open automaticly and then I copied the Firefox/Mozilla folders into the /system/library/user template/ but when a new user logs in the file type association is set back to default when Firefox runs.

• Permission problem - users can't access main index.php anymore

  From /var/www, I executed "chmod -R 774 ." and now none of my .php scripts are accessible. From my browser, when I type in mydomain.com or mydomain.com/test2.php or mydomain.com/test.php, I get the 403 Forbidden error msg. So, I changed the permissions of 3 of the .php scripts to 775, but this didn't help either. Here is the output from "ls -la /var/www": drwxrwxr-- 6 john wheel 4096 2010-09-29 17:38 . drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2010-09-27 21:15 .. -rwxrwxr-x 1 john wheel 3353 2010-09-29 05:29 index.php -rwxrwxr-x 1 john wheel 124 2010-09-27 23:12 .htaccess -rwxrwxr-x 1 john john 34 2010-09-29 17:39 test2.php -rwxrwxr-x 1 john john 26 2010-09-28 22:08 test.php The .htaccess file does a URL mod_rewrite so typing in index.php is not needed.
