• Generating changelogs from commit-comments - bad idea?

  I work for a small company (<10 developers) where we use Svn and to some extent Git. We have no release system implemented. We don't tag our applications with a release numbers so as you can imagine, we don't keep track of changes between releases very well. With this in mind I've been thinking about generating changelogs from the commit-comments. It doesn't have to be an awful idea if you implement guidelines for how to write comments. Or am I fooling myself thinking that colleagues will follow these guidelines? Most of them don't bother adding comments today but I'm hoping that will change if they become aware of how to formulate themselves and that you don't have to comment on every single commit. Or would we it be more wise to gather information from our bug/project managing software and write the changelogs manually (which unfortunately is something nobody wants to do)?

• Anyone using ASP.NET MembershipProvider with Nhibernate?

  Hi, I'm trying to implement Membership controls in a mvc 2 application and i'm having trouble dealing with the MembershipUser class. I have my own data store (in Postgresql) and I'm using Nhibernate to deal with it from C#. The thing is, I have my own user class, but I can't use it with any provider I found that implements Membership, because all the functions return the predefined MembershipUser class and cannot return my own. I'm losing my mind here, is there any way i can work with this, or should I implement everything myself? thanks in advance!

• Listener to prevent System.out display on the screen.

  Hi, I was doing my academic project and while building and testing i have put many println() statements. But when I had to submit all prints should not be displayed. Can i implement something like listener which will be invoked when System.out is tried to be executed and prevents it from displaying. I dont know how feasible this idea is but just want to know whether its possible or not. I know i could have used a log file or write into a file but again its just a thought came into my mind if I have to disable SOP how can i do it .. thanks

• correct approach to store in database

  I'm developing an online website (using Django and Mysql). I have a Tests table and User table. I have 50 tests within the table and each user completes them at their own pace. How do I store the status of the tests in my DB? One idea that came to my mind is to create an additional column in User table. That column containing testid's separated by comma or any other delimiter. userid | username | testscompleted 1 john 1, 5, 34 2 tom 1, 10, 23, 25 Another idea was to create a seperate table to store userid and testid. So, I'll have only 2 columns but thousands of rows (no of tests * no of users) and they will always continue to increase. userid | testid 1 1 1 5 2 1 1 34 2 10

  In Java, constructors cannot be recursive. Compile time error: "recursive constructor invocation". Let's assume that we did not have this restriction. Things to keep in mind: The return type of a constructor is void. Since it is a void method you can't harness the complete power of recursion. A constructor can invoke itself (or any other constructor) using this(). But a "call to this must be first statement in constructor" We could use non local data between consecutive calls to still have some possible gain from recursive constructors. Would there be any benefit from allowing recursive constructors?

"Porting Linux apps to Windows". I mean porting native Linux apps to native Windows with no platforms involved. If I can find any good book which explains this topic. • Google Web Optimizer -- How long until winning combination?

  I've had an A/B Test running in Google Web Optimizer for six weeks now, and there's still no end in sight. Google is still saying: "We have not gathered enough data yet to show any significant results. When we collect more data we should be able to show you a winning combination." Is there any way of telling how close Google is to making up its mind? (Does anyone know what algorithm does it use to decide if there's been any "high confidence winners"?) According to the Google help documentation: Sometimes we simply need more data to be able to reach a level of high confidence. A tested combination typically needs around 200 conversions for us to judge its performance with certainty. But all of our conversions have over 200 conversations at the moment: 230 / 4061 (Original) 223 / 3937 (Variation 1) 205 / 3984 (Variation 2) 205 / 4007 (Variation 3) How much longer is it going to have to run?? • Change background colour of individual elements on the fly

  Hi, Is there a way in CSS or JQuery where I can dynamically change the background of li tags so they get slightly lighter for each element until it gets to white. For example say I had a list of 10 li elements. The first would have a red (#ff0000) background, the next one would then be a lighter shade of red, and so on and so on until we got to the last one which would have a background of white (#FFFFFF) The list can be any length and i just want the background colour to go from one colour e.g. red to another colour e.g. white. • How do you reach a "flow" state while programming?

  I'm not talking about program flow, but as in the state of working called flow, the state where you can get great work done the most effectively. I find that my current work environment while good in many ways does not allow me to get into a good state of mind for writing code most of the time (my job includes many other functions). If it's critical to get something done I'll often put on head-phones with classical music and try to drown out the office noise around me (and discourage co-workings from asking me questions). I am best able to get work done late in the evening when the house is quite and I've been thinking about the project for most of the day. What tricks have you found when working in less then perfect office environments?

I've been using Eclipse with the C++ pluging , for C development, for the last couple months, but I found it not very useful, especially the debugging process that was quite annoying. I love Vistal Studio, so I'm looking for something really close to it. I need an IDE that will provide me, among other things: - rich debugging options - easy to use graphical designer - underscores error/warning (before I compile - like eclipse has) - Intellisense and more... Any suggestion? Maybe NetBeans?

• ^+Left Arrow and ^+Right Arrow suddenly stopped working on OS X

  Hello. I'm not really sure what to make of this. The key combination of ^← and ^→ have stopped working for one of the two users on my OS X installation. I use these keys all the time (switching tabs in terminal, IntelliJ primarily), and it's driving me crazy. On one user account, it works fine. On the other, it doesn't. This happened today and nothing significant comes to mind that would have caused some weird keybinding issue. If anyone has heard of or experienced anything like this, I would very much appreciate your advice! Thanks.

The input csv has no headers, the data is as follows: 05/25/2010,18:48:33,Stop,a1usak,10.128.212.212 05/25/2010,18:48:36,Start,q2uhal,10.136.198.231 05/25/2010,18:48:09,Stop,s0upxb,10.136.198.231 I use the following piping construct to read the file, sort and output to a file: (Get-Content d:\vpnData\u62gvpn2.csv) | %{,[regex]::Split($, ",")} | sort @{Expression={$[3]}},@{Expression={$_[1]}} | out-file d:\vpnData\u62gvpn3.csv The new file is written with the following format: 05/25/2010 07:41:57 Stop a0uaar 10.128.196.160 05/25/2010 12:24:24 Start a0uaar 10.136.199.51 05/25/2010 20:00:56 Stop a0uaar 10.136.199.51 What I would like to see in the output file is a similar format to the original input file with comma dilimiters: 05/25/2010,07:41:57,Stop,a0uaar,10.128.196.160 05/25/2010,12:24:24,Start,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 05/25/2010,20:00:56,Stop,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 But I can't quite seem to get there. I'm almost of the mind that I'll have to write another segment to read the newly produced file and reset its contents to the preferred format for further processing. Thoughts?

  Users of my service includes a JS in their pages that I provide. I am hosting the script they are including. My script does some manipulation on their content. I am sick of writing my own DOM manipulators/selectors and wasting hours for jobs that can be done with 1 line of code if I can use jQuery. Some of the users of my service already uses jQuery (or Prototype etc.) on their pages, so if I include jQuery there will be a conflict. Because there will be version differences, I don't want to use their jQuery selectors, methods either in case jQuery exists. • Trigger local program execution from browser

  First and foremost: I know it's not right or even good thing to do but my current customer will not cave in. So here's what he is asking for (this is for in-house-behind-a-firewall-etc project). In the web report I need to supply a link which points to the executable script that lives on the universally mapped location (network file server). When user clicks on it it is expected to run on the local client starting local executable which should be pre-installed on the client's box. It should be agnostic to OS (Windows or Linux) and the browser used. Customer doesn't mind to click on angry pop-up alerts but he wants to do it once per client browser (or at minimum - session). QUESTION: Will trusted Java applet be able to do it? Or is the any other (better, simpler) ways of achieving the same? ActiveX control is out of question

• Spring vs Hibernate

  Just trying to get my head round Spring and figuring out how I wire up an Oracle connection in xml config file, and now find out I need yet another framework! - Hibernate, this is soooo frustrating as it feels like I'm getting deeper and deeper into more and more frameworks without actually getting what I need done! I looked at Hibernate and it seems to do similar things to Spring, bearing in mind I just want to do some SQL inserts in Oracle. I am reluctant and do not have time to learn 2 frameworks - could I get away with just adopting Hibernate for the simple things I need to do?

For example, this little patch of code will go through text nodes, and if text matches something, it will replace it with a corresponding image via img element.   Right now, I have code which creates the database (just a few CREATE queries on a SQLite database) in my main database access class. This seems unnecessary as I have no intention of ever using the code. I would just need it if something went wrong and I needed to recreate the database. Should I... Leave things as they are, even though the database creation code is about a quarter of my file size. Move the database-creation code to a separate script. It's likely I'll be running it manually if I ever need to run it again anyway, and that would put it out-of-sight-out-of-mind while working on the main code. Delete the database-creation code and rely on revision control if I ever find myself needing it again.

• "painting" one array onto another using python / numpy

  I'm writing a library to process gaze tracking in Python, and I'm rather new to the whole numpy / scipy world. Essentially, I'm looking to take an array of (x,y) values in time and "paint" some shape onto a canvas at those coordinates. For example, the shape might be a blurred circle. The operation I have in mind is more or less identical to using the paintbrush tool in Photoshop. I've got an interative algorithm that trims my "paintbrush" to be within the bounds of my image and adds each point to an accumulator image, but it's slow(!), and it seems like there's probably a fundamentally easier way to do this. Any pointers as to where to start looking?

• In what package should a "Settings" class be?

  I've in the middle of building an application but found myself too easily creating new packages without keeping the project's structure in mind. Now, I'm trying to redo the whole project structure on paper first. I am using a Settings class with public properties, accessed as settings for several other classes around the project. Now, since this Settings class applies for the whole project, I am unsure if it should be packaged and if so, in what kind of package should it exist? Or should it be in the root (the default package) with the main application class? I've been thinking about putting it in my utils package, then again I don't think it really is an utlity. Any strategies on how to decide on such package structure for example for a Settings class?

• Alternatives to MS project server

  I manage a small group and I'd keep my work breakdown in project. However, it's difficult to provide my team with an adequate view into the project and ability to report on their progress. I looked at MS Project Server (the sharepoint webpart) but it's an expensive proposition. Has anyone had any experience with any other tool (commercial is fine) that helps team view and report on their work as managed by MS Project? FWIW, I have looked at OpenProj and it appears to be a decent solution for viewing project files on the desktop. Anything web-based, keeping in mind that I'd like people to report on their work not just view their work.

  I started getting into reading design blogs a little while ago, and it seemed that @font-face got really popular sometime late last year, or something like that, because I was under the impression that it was a new emerging feature of the web. But then I saw that Internet Explorer has had it since IE4 (with some conversion). So is it common to see @font-face online nowadays? Sould I have anything in mind with respect to accessibility, legality, or rendering before I do something like this? I saw that Hulu.com renders fonts with Canvas and a javascript called "cufon."

• How do I handle a low job offer for an entry level position?

  Hi guys! I recently graduated with MS in CS and I am excited because I just received a job offer from a company I really like for an entry-level sw engineer position. The thing is that, although the salary is not my priority and I care way more about gaining experience, their offer unfortunately is way below of what I expected. Actually after I did some research I realized that, comparing to the average salary range for the entry-level sw engineering positions in my area (one of the most expensive areas in the US) supposedly [X - Y]$ (where X is the lowest average and Y the highest), their offer is 20% below X! I wouldnt have a problem accepting an offer around X but this one is even lower than the lowest. Can I counter offer the X which is 20% more than what they offered me but at the same time is the minimum average? -- And mind you that I didnt even take under consideration the fact that I hold a MS degree which in many cases yields to a 5-10% more pay.
