• how to selfhost wcf without iis

  Reading up on WCF we have self hosting option available , one limitation here is we have to manage the host process lifecycle ourselves. What I am exploring here is to run the service without IIS and do a self hosting. Few things come to mind - How will request management work here. In case of IIS it manages the request and give control to dotnet on a particular thread. In absence of IIS do we need to write code ourselves to manage incoming requests ( say on a tcp port ) or WCF provides some classes to manage request and spawn threads to process each thread. I am aware that in case of self hosting this needs to be a windows service. In case of self hosting how can me tap on the number of simultaneous requests on the sever , it can be managed by limiting the thread pool ? or we can configure this via wcf ? Thanks dc

• Audio Player with Custom Buttons

  I am developing a website but require help regarding a simple javascript audio player. Currently, I have four divs set up as the "buttons" : previous song; pause; play; and next song. Pretty much self explanatory, each button serves its obvious function, previous song, pause the song, play the song, and next song. With this in mind, I am also hoping to have the music start playing right after the page completes loading. I understand there are numerous javascript solutions that involve the use of third-party "applications" such as jplayer, however, I am not well learned in javascript and would like to request the aid of the general body in this matter. Scenario: i got -iis wwwroot    - domainfolder (DynamicWeb Instalation)         - destinationfolder    - subdomain folder           default.aspx I need to know if i can make a fileupload in my Default.aspx, and do something like: fileUpload.SaveAs(Server.MapPath("../domainfolder/destinationfolder/") + filename) keep in mind that I will have full access to the windows server where the sites are hosted.

• Shortest distance between two line segments

  I need a function to find the shortest distance between two line segments. A line segment is defined by two endpoints. So for example one of my line segments (AB) would be defined by the two points A (x1,y1) and B (x2,y2) and the other (CD) would be defined by the two points C (x1,y1) and D (x2,y2). Feel free to write the solution in any language you want and I can translate it into javascript. Please keep in mind my geometry skills are pretty rusty. • SSRS mysterious extra pages

  I have two reports that are setup with the same page dimensions- A4 portrait, with page margins of 1cm. When I run the reports seperately and print them they both come out as expected: fitting into the width constraint of the page. However, when I include one report as a subreport in the other and then run and print the "master" report I start to experience problems. Even though both reports appear I get extra blank pages appearing every other page in the output. I'm sure I'm missing a simple trick - probably with the page sizes of the two reports but I can't figure it out - any pointers? I don't mind changing the setup of the subreport as it will never be run as a seperate eport in the wild, I only included that step to prove that it did indeed fit within the page!

• Passing extended parameter into Sql 2008 connection string

  Hi, I have a need to support extensive auditing capabilities for a system backing into Sql Server 2008. Since I plan to use LINQ (with no Stored Procs), the database would be a clean, zero contact data repository. However, I need to pratically record a snapshot of every change that happens in the db. So, I thought I should use triggers. But then, I need a user id for the particular user (not the connection string user id) to flow through into the database. In oracle, I should have been able to set up a PROXY USER and the trigger would be able to pick that up. Last I checked, there was no proxy user concept in Sql Server. Does anyone know if there's any extender property I can use to flow through my authenticated user name? ps: I don't mind the impact on connection pooling (if any). Thanks. P

  Hello there, so here is my problem: I have several different configuarion servers. I have different calculations (jobs); I can predict how long approximately each job will take to be caclulated. Also, I have priorities. My question is how to keep all machines loaded 99-100% and schedule the jobs in the best way. Each machine can do several calculations at a time. Jobs are pushed to the machine. The central machine knows the current load of each machine. Also, I would like to to assign some kind of machine learning here, because I will know statistics of each job (started, finished, cpu load etc.). How can I distribute jobs (calculations) in the best possible way, keeping in mind the priorities? Any suggestions, ideas, or algorithms ? FYI: My platform .NET.

  Hello, I'm having some trouble to find the best way to accomplish what I have in mind due to my inexperience. I have a class where I need to a vector of objects. So my first question will be: is there any problem having this: vector< AnyType container* and then on the constructor initialize it with new (and deleting it on the destructor)? Another question is: if this vector is going to store objects, shouldn't it be more like vector< AnyTipe* so they could be dynamically created? In that case how would I return an object from a method and how to avoid memory leaks (trying to use only STL)?

  Hi all, I'm writing an Android application and I would like to place a dialog or view over the home screen so that a user can enter text without jumping into my full application. I can't seem to get this to work. If I present a dialog (even in a transparent activity), my application launches. If you don't know what I'm talking about, take a look at the Facebook widget.   In Javascript, when your getting a property of an object, is there a performance penalty to getting the whole object vs only getting a property of that object? Also Keep in mind I'm not talking about DOM access these are pure simple Javascript objects.   This is mostly a follow-up to this question. I decided to just keep YAGNI in mind and created a global variable (libpython). I set it to #f initially, then set! it when init is called. I want to define a macro that will take the following: (define-cpyfunc Py_Initialize (_fun -> _void)) And convert it into this: (define Py_Initialize (get-cpyfunc "Py_Initialize" (_fun -> _void))) I've been reading through the macro documentation to try figuring this out, but I can't seem to figure out a way to make it work. Can anyone help me with this (or at least give me a general idea of what the macro would look like)? Or is there a way to do this without macros?

This is an interesting situation because what they want is a manual so that a future developer can come in without prior domain knowledge and make changes to the frontend or the backend in a timely manner. There are a few questions on my mind for this little project: What is a good manual design creating application? Microsoft Word doesn't quite cut it. • Java - Unknown characters passing as [a-zA-z0-9]*?

  Hello, I'm no expert in regex but I need to parse some input I have no control over, and make sure I filter away any strings that don't have A-z and/or 0-9. When I run this, Pattern p = Pattern.compile("^[a-zA-Z0-9]*$"); //fixed typo if(!p.matcher(gottenData).matches()) System.out.println(someData); //someData contains gottenData certain spaces + an unknown symbol somehow slip through the filter (gottenData is the red rectangle): In case you're wondering, it DOES also display Text, it's not all like that. For now, I don't mind the [?] as long as it also contains some string along with it. Please help. [EDIT] as far as I can tell from the (very large) input, the [?]'s are either white spaces either nothing at all; maybe there's some sort of encoding issue, also perhaps something to do with #text nodes (input is xml)

• Time Complexities of recursive algorithms

  Whenever I see a recursive solution, or I write recursive code for a problem, it is really difficult for me to figure out the time complexity, in most of the cases I just say its exponential? How is it exponential actually? How people say it is 2^n, when it is n!, when it is n^n or n^k. I have some questions in mind, let say find all permutations of a string (O(n!)) find all sequences which sum up to k in an array (exponential, how exactly do I calculate). Find all subsets of size k whose sum is 0 (will k come somewhere in complexity , it should come right?). Can any1 help me how to calculate the exact complexity of such questions, I am able to wrote code for them , but its hard understanding the exact time complexity.

• Generic Abstract Singleton with Custom Constructor in C#

  I want to write a generic singleton with an external constructor. In other words the constructor can be modified. I have 2 designs in my mind but I don't know whether they are practical or not. First one is to enforce derived class' constructor to be non-public but I do not know if there is a way of it? Second one is to use a delegate and call it inside the constructor? It isn't necessarily to be a constructor. The reason I chose custom constructor is doing some custom initializations. Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

However, the following has been the source of some confusion for me and I know the people here will be able to handily clear up the confusion for me. Basically, I would like to finally understand the relationship between any and all of the following terms. Some of the terms I do actually understand pretty well, but some of them are similar in my mind and I would like to once and for all to see their relationships/distinctions laid out all at once. They are: compiler interpreter bytecode machine code assembler assembly language binary object code executable Ideally, an answer would use examples from Java and C++ and other well-known programming languages that a young-ish student like me would be familiar with. For example: index.php - the main plugin file info.php - returns an array with plugin information install.php - self-explanatory can you think of an elegant, short-hand name for a PHP file that contains the code that is to be executed before any HTML is output? Do any examples from other frameworks come to your mind? • PHP Captcha without session

  Ok, here is an issue: in the project i'm working on, we can't rely on server-side sessions for any functionality. The problem is that common captcha solutions from preventing robotic submits require session to store the string to match captcha against. The question is - is there any way to solve the problem without using sessions? What comes to my mind - is serving hidden form field, containing some hash, along with captcha input field, so that server then can match these two values together. But how can we make this method secure, so that it couldn't be used to break captcha easily.

• Creating controls in ASP with dynamic IDs

  Hi, I'm creating a chat widget that will be dropped into CommunityServer. The widget works great, but I just discovered that if I drop two of these widgets onto the same page, only one of them works! And I'm quite certain the reason is because the chat window is defined in ASP, and now there are two instances of the chat window, with the same ID, on the same page. I am doing this with straight ASP & Javascript (not by choice), so my chat window is defined as: <telerik:RadListBox ID="rlbMessages" runat="server" > (don't mind that it's a telerik control). So I was hoping I could do something like this: <telerik:RadListBox ID="<%= 'rlbMessages' + chatRoomID %>" runat="server" > But from what I've gathered, apparently you can't assign ID's this way? What is the alternative?

• how do I filter RoutingErrors and their long stack trace out of my log? rails

  I am seeing several strange requests like this, with urls like /sitemap/, /google_sitemap.xml.gz, /sitemap.xml.gz, /google_sitemap.xml, /cgi-bin/awstat/awstats.pl, etc. The default rails behavior dumps these long stack traces into my log, like the following: ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/rails/info/properties" with {:method=>:get}): /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/rack/request_handler.rb:92:in `process_request' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_request_handler.rb:207:in `main_loop' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:400:in `start_request_handler' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:351:in `handle_spawn_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/utils.rb:184:in `safe_fork' etc. Is there any way to stop these long stack traces? I wouldn't mind the first line, the ActionController::RoutingError with the message and the url, but I'd like to get rid of the long stack of passenger stuff.

  I have a simple application to store Contacts. This application uses a simple relational database to store Contact information, like Name, Address and other data fields. While designing it, I question came to my mind: When designing programs that uses databases, should I retrieve all database records and store them in objects in my program, so I have a very fast performance or I should always gather data only when required? Of course, retrieving all data can only be done if it`s not too many, but do you use this approach when you make sure that the database will be small (< 300 records for example)? I have designed once a similar application that fetches data only when needed, but that was slow (using a Access database). Thanks for all help.

• Free sounds for iPhone games.

  I'm looking for a good source for sound effects for my iPhone game. I like SoundSnap, but they charge you for every sound you download, not just the ones you end up using. Sound design in games can be a very iterative process and I don't want to pay for 10 sounds I never use before finding the right one. freesound.org is another really good site, but they are all CC licensed and can't be used in commercial games. It's unclear if a free iPhone App is considered commercial (or if my final game will be free). Googling for this returns a huge number of pay sites with horrible web pages. I don't mind paying for sounds, but I want to pay for what I use. Any good personal recommendations?

  I am a web developer, have worked with PHP and .NET both. having over a year of experience working on web I haven't been able to understand the browser caching features thoroughly, I hope Web Gurus here can help me with it. Questions I have in my mind are : How does browser actually caches stuff, does it request for to see if the cached file has changed on the server or not, What is the Ideal way for a developer to make use of browser chaching to its full, but also to be able to push new changes on the site with no hassle at all. I think if browser somehow chaches my CSS and JS and Images, and then just makes a checks for their modification to the server everytime, this can sort the issue. but I am not sure how to do it, waiting for interesting answers :)

  I'm new to cookies, and im trying to set a cookie where to store the referer (the org ref). But when i use this and lets say i go to another page in my site and then go back to the homepage its sets a new cookie with the exact same name and with the ref of the previous page. Is there away to avoid this?
