  In honour of the regular T-SQL Tuesday blogging, the UnSQL theme started, looking at topics that were not directly SQL related, but nevertheless quite interesting. This is the brainchild of Jen McCown, who posted the second of these recently. I’m actually a bit late in responding, as I haven’t got it in my head to look for these posts yet. Still, Jen says I can still contribute now, hence this post. The theme this time is on Tech Giants. I could list people all day for those I admire in the SQL Server space, and go on even longer if I branch out to other areas. But I actually want to highlight four guys that I admire so much for their skills, integrity and general awesomeness that I hired them. Yes – the guys that work for me at LobsterPot Solutions, being Ben McNamara, David Gardiner, Roger Noble and Ashley Sewell. I admire them all, and they present the company with a platform on which to grow.

• How do I get an HP 1018 laser printer to work on 12.04?

  edit : already printed on windows-machine Ubuntu 12.04, LJ 1018. I've tried making foo2zjs from sourse. I've downloaded firmware and placed it where necessarily manually from here I've also tried this - same as manual dowload but with some patches like stoping cups, etc.. I've fixed usbfs: process 11200 (usb) did not claim interface 0 before use problems using sudo rmmod usblp as described here. And now I have Aug 10 11:51:59 pav /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: usb://HP/LaserJet%201018?serial=KP07RLV... download failed. Aug 10 11:51:59 pav /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: loading HP LaserJet 1018 firmware /lib/firmware/hp/sihp1018.dl to CUPS USB device ... error. Before that prinet was stucking on "Sending data to printer". Now it's code is "Not connected". Unless ben@pav:~$ lsusb ... Bus 001 Device 015: ID 03f0:4117 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1018 Thank you.

• Security Issues When Creating Pages in SharePoint

  I was speaking (or rather IM'ing) with Ben Collins a while back and he came across an interesting problem that I wanted to document for the sake of posterity.  If you have a SharePoint user who has permissions to create a page in a page library, but that user is having security issues trying to actually make a page, then it the security issue may be related to their access rights on the master page gallery.  Users who create pages must have at least restricted read access to the master page gallery for page creation to succeed. That is one of the joys of working in SharePoint. if something doesn't show up there is usually a good but obscure reason for it, but SharePoint certainly won't tell you outright why it is.  All I have to say is that I'm glad he ran into that issue and not me.

• Zoneminder user control reset

  i have ubuntu 12.04 and i think i was an idiot and set all the restrictions to view" in the "users" tab on ZoneManager not "edit" as it should be. Now i cant do anything in the options, ive tried to find the conf file to edit to no avail. Uninstalled Zoneminder, apache and SQLite and reinstalled, but it just reverts all the settings back to the "view" setting. Ive googled all day tried to edit the sql files with sql browser, and it tells me its not a valid sql file.. many thanks in advance for any help. Ben

  In the ongoing work being done on Maven documentation support for NetBeans Platform developers, the tutorial describing how to use the Maven command line to set up and develop applications on the NetBeans Platform has ben updated: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-maven-commandline.html An interesting next step after following the tutorial above is to... open the result into the free community edition of IntelliJ IDEA: It's not hard to register the JDK and Maven in IntelliJ IDEA and to then run your application directly from there. The point is that there's no requirement to use NetBeans IDE if you want to create applications on top of its framework.

• Detect user logout / shutdown in Python / GTK under Linux

  OK this is presumably a hard one, I've got an pyGTK application that has random crashes due to X Window errors that I can't catch/control. So I created a wrapper that restarts the app as soon as it detects a crash, now comes the problem, when the user logs out or shuts down the system, the app exits with status 1. But on some X errors it does so too. • Logging in worker threads spawned from a pylons application does not seem to work

  I have a pylons application where, under certain cirumstances I want to spawn multiple worker threads to process items in a queue. Right now we aren't making use of a ThreadPool (would be ideal, but we'll add that in later). The main problem is that the worker threads logging does not get written to the log files. When I run the code outside of the pylons application the logging works fine. So I think its something to do with the pylons log handler but not sure what. • Consume a WCF Web Service in Sharepoint Services 3.0

  I've seen this question and since it doesn't answer my question and the topic is fairly miss-leading in my opinion, I feel the urge to ask this again. I have a Sharepoint Webpart that I deploy using Visual Studio Sharepoint Tools 1.2 to a Sharepoint Services 3.0 instance on my local Windows 2003 server. All works great, however, as soon as I add a WCF Service it won't run the code. All I get is a File not found error. • eclipse tomcat debug mode slow - pegs cpu

  Running Tomcat through eclipse works fine in non-debug mode, but not in debug mode. When I try to start the Tomcat server in debug mode, the console output looks fine for a while, but then starts slowing down and eventually just stops, pegging the cpu at 100%. I tried everything I could think of to fix it: cleanesd tomcat working directory restarted eclipse restarted Windows refreshed/cleaned all projects I first had this problem last week using eclipse ganymede. I had been running fine in debug-mode for several months prior to this issue. I didn't make any significant changes to our project that would cause this. Eventually, I upgraded to eclipse galileo which solved my problem. Now 2 days later, I'm having the same problem in galileo. Like I said it works fine in non-debug mode. Any help is much appreciated. I should add that other things work in debug mode - for instance junit tests, so it is something specific to tomcat.

I simply added the service by right clicking project, selecting add service reference, giving WSDL url for the service and clicking OK.(After clicking ok asked for credentials and i provided them) Then when i tried to call a method from the serviceclien object i got the error message below: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Anonymous'. • apache: cgi links lead to a "you have chosen to open foo.cgi", although scriptalias is set

  Following this guide on CentOS 5.2, just getting nagios set up for the first time. The main page shows up just fine, but when I try to view any of the pages that should be generated by a cgi process, firefox prompts me to save the .cgi instead, so apache's obviously not understanding that it needs to run the cgi and get back some html from it. The odd thing is, though, that, as far as I can tell, apache should be running these files as cgi. nagios.conf: # SAMPLE CONFIG SNIPPETS FOR APACHE WEB SERVER # Last Modified: 11-26-2005 # # This file contains examples of entries that need # to be incorporated into your Apache web server # configuration file. The .cgi files are indeed in the /nagios/cgi-bin/ directory, so I didn't specify the incorrect directory. Searching seemed to only provide people who had difficulty with permissions, which is not the issue here. This seems to me to be a pretty basic thing, but even with the excellent apache documentation, I'm at a bit of a loss (been using cherokee too much lately :) ).

  Hi, I've just stumbled upon this: within a Unity container, I want to register IDictionary<TK, TV>; assume that it's IDictionary<string, int> _unityContainer = new UnityContainer() .RegisterType<IDictionary<string, int>, Dictionary<string, int>>(); but if I try var d = _unityContainer.Resolve<IDictionary<string, int>>(); it fails to resolve... I get... Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ResolutionFailedException: Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ResolutionFailedException: Resolution of the dependency failed, type = "System.Collections.Generic.IDictionary`2[System.String,System.Int32]", name = "(none)". Exception occurred while: while resolving. Exception is: InvalidOperationException - The type Dictionary`2 has multiple constructors of length 2. Unable to disambiguate. At the time of the exception, the container was: Resolving System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary2[System.String,System.Int32],(none) (mapped from System.Collections.Generic.IDictionary2[System.String,System.Int32], (none)) --- System.InvalidOperationException: The type Dictionary`2 has multiple constructors of length 2. Unable to disambiguate.. So it looks like it has found the Type to resolve (being Dictionary<string, int>) but failed to new it up... How come unity can't resolve this type? If I type IDictionary<string, int> d = new Dictionary<string, int>() that works... any ideas? thanks!

• Make fancybox jQuery plugin with results from submitting a form on same page

  I am trying to take form results that are generated from a PHP call and populate them into a div that will then appear in a light box upon click of the submit button. So far I have successfully setup the form and am populating the results on the same page into a hidden div. I can make this div appear no problem in a light box by setting up a href link but cannot make it show up by simply by clicking the submit button. I know my fancybox and jQuery calls are good but not sure where I'm going wrong on the submit button. Here is what I have so far to make it work with a link: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ $("#various1").fancybox({ 'transitionIn' : 'none', 'transitionOut' : 'none', 'scrolling' : 'auto', 'overlayOpacity' : '0' }); }); </script> <a id="various1" href="#inline1" >Inline</a> <div style="display: none;"> <div id="inline1" style="width:500px;height:550px;"> Works great here when you click inline after I have submitted the form. Here is what I tried to make it work with the submit button: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#submit").click(function(){ alert('jQTest'); $("#various1").fancybox(); }); }); <input type="submit" name="submit" id="submit" value="--> Find" /> I think it has to be some way I'm calling the jQuery for the fancybox or some identifier for the submit button & div because the submit button click is registering fine. Suggestions?
