  We are using zend framework, doctrine on our website, that will have the minimum of 2000 users daily, please consider that we prefer that the server has opcode caching. And any available technology that speeds up php performance. We have heard that zend server offers an optimal performance for php. Please recommend a hosting server or a vps plan, that can handle such an application. given that our application has some kind of social networking and it applies alot of ajax requests even in minimal usage of the website, for example in 30 min we may have up to 400 requests from an individual user.   I have few log files in different servers and I want to check output in the end of those log files for e.g . success: 4000 failed: 200 These logs files are getting generated daily and I have to keep track of these numbers. If there is any way I can automate this option instead of going and checking these files and wasting so much of my time. • Best way to syn a file between 2 or more drives?

  I have a special file that I edit daily, it is somewhat like a large text file but a little more to it then that. I have a copy on my main desktop and a copy of the file on a USB drive as well. I would like a way to open up either file (from the USB drive or from my desktop drive) and be able to edit and save the file and have it stay updated on both drives. What is a lightweight and easy method of doing this? I do not need anything fancy

• Crontab no error but doesn't execute script

  I'm trying to execute a shell script from cron on Freebsd. To test wether crontab is working at all, i wrote the line * * * * * echo "Hello" /home/myuser/logile and it work fine. But when trying to execute any script it doesn't do anything, not even an error. (In the script i tried to run is just the same echo command) Below is the output of crontab -l: SHELL=/bin/sh PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin HOME=/home/myuser MAILTO=myuser * * * * * /home/myuser/shellscript.sh /home/myuser/logfile why is the script not getting executed, although crontab is obviously running? permission for all files are set to rwxr-xr-x

• How to store Ruby method references in a database?

  I am writing my first rails app. It needs to aggregate some data from multiple sites and for each site I have a unique way of getting the data (some provide RSS, some JSON, for some I scrape the HTML etc.). These will run on schedule, probably as a rake task from cron. It seems logical to store the sites and relevant information in a model, but I am not sure where to put unique data retrieval methods. Do I store method names in the model? Do I just name the methods the same as site name and call them that way? Basically, I need a way to read a list of sites and call appropriate method for each site. What is the Ruby on Rails way to do it?

Do you create a script that run a rake job in cron and have it mail you results? a pre-commit hook in git? just manual invokation?   I looking for a simple way to wire the homepage of my website so that it fires off a Push notification message to my iPhone every time someone lands on the page (just visiting in their browser). I'm aware this could become annoying! I currently send regular notifications to my iPhone using cron and curl to check sites / RSS feeds for change and then fire to to the Prowl API who in turn send it to my iPhone - like so: curl https://prowl.weks.net/publicapi/add -F apikey=$apikey -F priority=$priority -F application="$app" -F event="$eventname" -F description="$description" Could I do something similar from with the HTML of the homepage - call a script on my server which in turn fires a similar curl request above? Maybe with Javascript or PHP? Ideally I'd like the loading and rendering of me webpage to be uninterrupted by the call. • Run a PHP-script from a PHP-script without blocking

  I'm building a spider which will traverse various sites and data mining them. Since I need to get each page separately this could take a VERY long time (maybe 100 pages). I've already set the set_time_limit to be 2 minutes per page but it seems like apache will kill the script after 5 minutes no matter. This isn't usually a problem since this will run from cron or something similar which does not have this time limit. However I would also like the admins to be able to start a fetch manually via a HTTP-interface. It is not important that apache is kept alive for the full duration, I'm, going to use AJAX to trigger a fetch and check back once in a while with AJAX. My problem is how to start the fetch from within a PHP-script without the fetch being terminated when the script calling it dies. Maybe I could use system('script.php &') but I'm not sure it will do the trick. Any other ideas?

• Timed email reminder in python

  I have written up a python script that allows a user to input a message, his email and the time and they would like the email sent. This is all stored in a mysql database. However, how do I get the script to execute on the said time and date? will it require a cron job? I mean say at 2:15 on april 20th, the script will search the database for all times of 2:15, and send out those emails. But what about for emails at 2:16? I am using a shared hosting provided, so cant have a continously running script. Thanks

  Eventually I would like to get to setting it up as a Rake task and do a cron job, but for right now...all I want to do is take my ruby script that used to work as a standalone script and have it work within my Rails app. I renamed the file to be .rake instead of .rb and tried doing rake my_script at the command-line, but that gave me this error message: rake aborted! Don't know how to build task 'my_script' (See full trace by running task with --trace) How do I run this script within my Rails environment? This is the first time I am doing something like this, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  I'm looking to implement a state machine to manage a user moving through a series of steps over an extended period of time (weeks) with emails and then they interact with the app. I've looked at a couple of AASM plugins and forks (it seems like this plugin space has become a bit chaotic) and am curious what people would recommend. I saw the automatic AASM by hashrocket, that transitions states using cron, and from the title it looks like it might fit the bill but there doesn't appear to be any documentation anywhere and it looks more like a skeleton app than a plugin.

• Controlling maximum Java standalone running in Linux

  Hi, We've developed a Java standalone program. We've configured in our Linux (RedHat ES 4) cron schedule to execute this Java standalone every 10 minutes. Each standalone may sometime take more than 1 hour to complete, or sometime it may complete even within 5 minutes. My problem/solution I'm looking for is, the number of Java standalones executing at any time should not exceed, for example, 5 threads. So, for example, before even a Java standalone/thread starts, if there are already 5 threads running, then this thread should not be started; otherwise this would indirectly start creating OutOfMemoryError problems. How do I control this? I would also like to make this 5 thread as configurable. Other Information: I've also configured -Xms and -Xmx heap size settings. Is there any tool/mechanism by which we can control this? I also heard about Java Service Wrapper. What is this all about?

• Weblogic server 10.0 - Managed Server shutting down

  We have a weblogic server 10.0 instance which has a cluster with one managed server. Every Monday at 5am (or few seconds after), it shuts down on its own. The logs do not show any errors except the following message: JVM called WLS shutdown hook. The server will force shutdown now. JVM has a -Xnohup option and using JRockit. There is no cron job on the server. I am not sure how to debug this one. Admin Server keeps running with no issues and I am able to start the managed server back up with no problems. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Alternative to zc.buildout that runs on Python3

  My project uses buildout to do primarily two things: automatically fetch dependencies and create scripts; and setup cron jobs (on deployment machines) using the usercrontab buildout recipe. But buildout is not yet available for Python 3. So I would like to consider alternatives for buildout. I know that both virtualenv and pip work on Python 3 - but what is the preferred tool to automate the build toolchain (of creating virtualenv, and automatically installing/upgrading deps)? There is fabric, paver, and so on. What is your preferred tool of choice in this case? It must work seamlessly on both Windows and *nix.

• How to get "paster request" to use config host value instead of localhost?

  I'm trying to access my pylons application via cron job to send notifications to my users. The way I'm doing this is by running the application using something like: paster request myconfig.ini /maintenance/do In the actual controller I check for the "paste.command_request" to block public access. Everything works but the only problem is that within the notifications that I send to my users there is a link to their profile and the host is "localhost" which should instead be the domain name of the application. When the notifications are sent from within the served application (say, a user modifies their settings on the site) the notifications have the correct url. I am using mako to render my email tamplates and within the template I am using the "pylons.url" method with "qualified" set to "True". Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance.

  My current App is written in Python on GAE which can do Contacts management, Genealogy, Social Networking, Photo sharing, Telecom Integration (SMS, iVRS, URL Billing), CRON and performs business logic operations for our Mobile Apps. Current Architecture indlues python, django, jquery, memcache and few telecom APIs. Now, It feels that an SOA Architecture on GAE using Java would be really ideal and scalable for this kind of App where we want to build new features like widgets that users can turn on or off and third party developers can also develop and deploy features. Please correct me or improve the following design decision: UI (Current plan is GWT) Sessions, Security and ACL (Spring MVC 2.x) Reusable Business Logic components (?) Implementation of Web Services (?) Your advice would really help.

  Hi, Im using ApnsPHP for push notifications on my server, but it's a little bit slow when you have to send a lot of notifications, so i decided to Run it in the server mode. I just want it to run in cron every 1 hour, check if there are some notifications to be sent, and if yes, run it in 5 processes to be faster. I'm sending updates to my users once a day depending on the timezone they set. So i have to run it every hour, and send messages to timezones that actually have 12:00 PM. Is there any way to do this? I know there is a demonstration but i just have no clue about how to do it. A simple sample will really help. Thank you millions!!

• Mirror a git repository by pulling?

  I am wondering if there is an easy way, ie like a simple cron job, to regularly pull from a remote git repository to a local read only mirror for backup purposes? Ideally it would pull all branches and tags, but the master/trunk/head would be sufficient. I just need a way to make sure that if the master git server dies, we have a backup location that we could manually fail over to. (I have been googling and reading documentation for help on how to do this for quite some time now and the furthest I have gotten is a bash script that does pull's on a regular interval.)

  Hello guys, I was checking out the stocktwits.com website. While signing up I provided them with my twitter username. Now whenever I tweet and if my tweet contains $ and a stock ticker symbol - it instantly appears on Stocktwits.com I am interested in implementing something similar in my website. Just wanted an understanding of how this would work. This is how I'm assuming it would work at a high level: 1) On my website - require users to provide their twitter usernames 2) Run a cron job every few minutes to pull the latest tweets for each of the usernames provided using something like http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/username.xml I've tried Stocktwits and they updates are almost instantaneous - so it does not appear like they are checking for updates every few minutes. What are the best ways to implement this solution Thanks

• Image rendering on browser or temporary images?

  I'm trying to make a statistics page where it will show several data and charts. The charts need to be pictures so that the user can save it/drag-and-drop to his/her personal reports. I'm using Gruff Graphs for Ruby to produce the charts but I don't know the best way to display the results safe and protected. Some of my ideas/tries are: save the chart to a file (jpg, png)? problem: data is available to anyone (don't have access to cron, to delete data from time to time) render in the browser (has to work on IE)? Use javascript (Raphaël—JavaScript Library) or Google API and output a PDF report (need plugin or gem, right)? use send_data? i've tried to output other way than inline, because I needs to show other data, is it possible? • Photo uploading via email

  I'd like to be able to upload photos via email, which I've seen (and used) on eat.ly and meetups.jquery.com but I haven't been able to work out how to do this, does anyone have a solution? Essentially I believe the process should be something like this: 1) user adds picture to email on mobile device then send to a specific email address, say '[email protected]' 2) email server, cron job or something else looks at the senders address and tells it to add the attachement to that account 3) photo shows up on users profile page I run Apache servers, with MySQL, PHP, and a JQuery framework. I have email servers running Courier, and I missing anything?

• Whats wrong with this task queue setup?

  I've setup this task queue implementation on a site I host for a customer, it has a cron job which runs each morning at 2am "/admin/tasks/queue", this queues up emails to be sent out, "/admin/tasks/email", and uses cursors so as to do the queuing in small chunks. For some reason last night /admin/tasks/queue kept getting run by this code and so sent out my whole quota of emails :/. • GnuPG Shell Script - Refuses to read password

  The script below used to work on Mac OS X, but, since moving it to Ubuntu, it doesn't seem to read from the password file at all. Even when I run it from the command line, no matter what I do, I get a popup prompt asking me for the password. As this will run via cron, I don't want this to happen... I want it to read the password from the file with no prompt.
