• which web services stacks are supported on JBoss AS 5?

  Hi, I've been trying to find this info in JBoss docs/forums/WIKIs - but could not get a concise answer to this question: Which web services stacks are supported (or you can make work on) in JBoss 5? I have a huge legacy app using Axis 1 web services which is running fine on WLS9.2. Now I have to migrate it to JBoss 5 and I have to decide whether I can leave Axis1 web services as is (at least for the time being, to get the app working on JBoss at all), or if I have to upgrade web services to Axis 2 or CXF. So, given the three options, Axis 1, Axis 2 and CXF - what does support for them look like on JBoss 5? Any gotchas, pain points, words of wisdom from experience? :)

• XCode toolchain error: dyld: Symbol not found: _objc_collect_if_needed

  I have been seeing the following error message a lot whenever I build something using the simulator: dyld: Symbol not found: _objc_collect_if_needed Referenced from: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation Expected in: /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation I am running XCode 3.2.2 on OS X 10.6.3, and have reinstalled the SDK twice with no avail. This error makes running any code on the simulator something of a Russian Roulette, but with 5 out of 6 chambers loaded. I have checked the files mentioned in the error message, and they all checkout as being present. This sometimes go away if I restart XCode. Other times I have to logout, or even restart. And sometimes nothing works. I have googled this, even tried apple's developer forums. Other than a reference to this in the MonoTouch list, this bug appears to be completely unknown otherwise. Anything help would be greatly appreciated - this is a real PITA. Cheers, Steve

• Array Vs. Linked List

  I apologize--this question may be a bit open-ended but I think there are probably definite, quantifiable answers to it so I'll post it anyway. A person I know is trying to learn C++ and software development (+1 to him) and he asked me why someone would want to use a linked list in preference to an array. Coding a linked list is, no doubt, a bit more work than using an array and he wondered what would justify the additional effort. I gave him the answer I know: insertion of new elements is trivial in linked list but it's a major chore in an array. But then I got to thinking about it a bit more. Besides the ease of insertion of a new element into a linked list are there other advantages to using a linked list to store a set of data vs. storing it in an array? As I said, I'm not meaning to start a long and drawn-out discussion. I'm just looking for other reasons that a developer might prefer a linked list to an array.

• Java RS232 Comm on Vista-64 bit

  We have a Java application which needs to communicate with a peripheral device over Virtual Serial COM port. We use the RS232 Java COMM API (javax.comm.properties, comm.jar, win32com.dll) to achieve the same. Currently the code works fine on Windows XP 32-bit, Vista 32-bit and Windows 7. However we are having a problem trying to communicate on Vista 64-bit. I read from the Java forums that there is no 64-bit support for the Java COMM API I was wondering if anyone was facing a similar situation and were able to resolve the same in some way?

• Crossdomain TinyMCE

  Hi, folling this discussion and this link, I learnt that by adding document.domain = 'mydomain.com'; to the tinyMCE initializer file and tiny_mce_popup.js i can overcome the cross domain problem. I haven't tested it on a proper production server, but in my dev environment the base domain is localhost:8000 and my static files (also tinyMCE ones) are on localhost:88. Adding document.domain = 'localhost:8000'; or document.domain = 'localhost:88'; doesn't solve the problem as I get the following error: Uncaught Error: SECURITY_ERR: DOM Exception 18 Any help? • When should assertions stay in production code?

  Hi all, There's a discussion going on over at comp.lang.c++.moderated about whether or not assertions, which in C++ only exist in debug builds by default, should be kept in production code or not. Obviously, each project is unique, so my question here is not so much whether assertions should be kept, but in which cases this is recommendable/not a good idea. By assertion, I mean: A run-time check that tests a condition which, when false, reveals a bug in the software. A mechanism by which the program is halted (maybe after really minimal clean-up work). I'm not necessarily talking about C or C++. My own opinion is that if you're the programmer, but don't own the data (which is the case with most commercial desktop applications), you should keep them on, because a failing asssertion shows a bug, and you should not go on with a bug, with the risk of corrupting the user's data. This forces you to test strongly before you ship, and makes bugs more visible, thus easier to spot and fix. What's your opinion/experience? Cheers, Carl See related question here

  I'm having an annoying :) I use regexes from this: http://forums.codecharge.com/posts.php?post_id=77123 if you enter [url]www.bob.com[/url] it leads too http://localhost/test/www.bobsbar.com So I added before http://$1 in the replacement. That fix it but then [url]http://www.bob.com[/url] will lead to http://http://www.bobsbar.com How would you fix this? I want my users to be able to post links with AND without http:// and i want it to redirect to the site -_- Hope you understand this. • Google Chrome - NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED - pages only partially load

  Hi Google Chrome version (8.0.552.224 (Official Build 68599)) I have developed a web site using asp.net mvc and jquery. it uses a lot of ajax. I noticed that occasionally a web page does not complete loading all files from the server. Browsing through forums It seems that this also happens to other people. Looking in to the Chromium Net-Internals ( type: chrome://net-internals/ as a url in the chrome browser ) I noticed that the pages do not complete loading if a NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event occurred. Any files that were not fetched from the server before the time of the NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event failed to arrive with error (-3) Do you know why the NETWORK_IP_ADDRESSES_CHANGED event occurs?   Some forums that I regularly visit sell premium programs, and to prevent them from being leaked they use hardware-id authentication. That is, first they send you a program to run to grab your HWID, you tell them your HWID, they store it in a database, then they send you the actual program. If your HWID isn't in the database, the program won't run. So what is Hardware-ID, and how is it generated? Why is it that my HWID is different depending on the programmer that sends me a HWID-grabber?

• Persistence with Vaadin

  Hi I'm trying to learn vaadin. I'm really confused how to do any kind of application development with persistence because if I have a reference to my service layer objects, they get stored in session and I really don't want that. Persistence stuff just isn't serializable. My case is that I have an already made application that uses Spring and I'm creating a new UI for it with Vaadin. I can inject the spring stuff to my Vaadin application but that gets stored in the session. Any tips? By the way how do you post in the Vaadin forums? I can't find a post button or way to register :)

• Where can I get resources for developing for Mac OS Classic?

  I recently got bored and fired up my old Mac OS Classic emulator, and then got nostalgic for writing old-school applications for the system. So, my question: Where can I get dev tools that can still target Classic? (Ideally free, since this is just for fun, but if grabbing a used version of CodeWarrior on eBay is the best way to go, so be it.) Where can I get at least reference materials so I don't have to guess-and-check my way around Carbon/the System Toolbox? Are there any forums still running that would be open to answering old-school Mac questions for when I get stuck? This is purely for fun, so don't worry about how impractical this is. I know.

  I have been experimenting with some concepts from XP, like the following: Pair Programming Test First Programming Incremental Deliveries Ruthless Refactoring So far so good until I had a major stump: How do I design my test cases when there aren't any code yet? From what basis do I have to design them? From simple assumptions? From the initial requirements? Or is this where UML diagrams and the "analysis phase" fits in? Just had to ask because in some XP books I've read, there was little to no discussion of any diagramming tool (there was one which suggested I come up with pseudocodes and some sort of a flowchart...but it did not help me in writing my tests)

• asp.net InsertCommand to return latest insert ID

  Dear all, I'm unable to retrieve the latest inserted id from my SQL Server 2000 db using a typed dataset in asp.NET I have created a tableadapter and I ticked the "Refresh datatable" and "Generate Insert, Update and Delete statements". This auto-generates the Fill and GetData methods, and the Insert, Update, Select and Delete statements. I have tried every possible solution in this thread http://forums.asp.net/t/990365.aspx but I'm still unsuccesfull, it always returns 1(=number of affected rows). I do not want to create a seperate insert method as the auto-generated insertCommand perfectly suits my needs. As suggested in the thread above, I have tried to update the InsertCommand SQL syntax to add SELECT SCOPY_IDENTITY() or something similar, I have tried to add a parameter of type ReturnValue, but all I get is the number of affected rows. Does anyone has a different take on this? Thanks in advance! Stijn

Like other portals, subscriber users should be able to create a topic, discuss topic, share information about them, and have the ability for notifications/alerts. The added feature, I would like to have is to moderate users. Based on the topic of discussion, users will be asked automated questions and their responses will be processed to provide recommendations. I have no knowledge of social networking portal requirements. I will be coding alone and want to have something up and running in about six months. • Frequent Netbeans freezes

  I'm using Netbeans 6.8 for PHP projects located on network drives in a Windows network. Frequently, the IDE gets really slow (like a temporary freeze) to a point where it's totally unusable. At first it seems like a total crash, but after some time (might be sevaral minutes) the IDE works again as before. This happens with Netbeans 6.7 as well as 6.8 on my Windows XP 32-bit installation. I'm using Java 1.6.0_13. This is a fresh Netbeans installation, so it can't have to do with too many temp files. I assume it has to do with the frequent code checks that Netbeans does. It's probably not very fast when doing this over the network connection. But it can't be that this feature renders the IDE useless... • Take screenshot of DirectX full-screen application

  This boggles me. DirectX bypasses everything and talks directly to the device driver, thus GDI and other usual methods won't work - unless Aero is disabled (or unavailable), all that appears is a black rectangle at the top left of the screen. I have tried what other have suggested on several forums, using DirectX to get the back buffer and save it, but I get the same result: device-GetFrontBufferData(0, surface); D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile("fileName", D3DXIFF_BMP, surface, NULL, NULL); Is there any way to get a screenshot of another full-screen DirectX application when Aero is enabled?

• OpenLayers, Layers: Tiled vs. single tile

  Each time we add a new layer to our OpenLayers based website (data provided primarily by a GeoServer server), we discuss whether to use a single-tile or a tiled approach. Some of the parameters we evaluate are the following: Using the tiled approach we get: Slow but continuous buildup of the viewport Lots of small images Client side caching possibilities Blocking of the loading pipeline (6 requests at a time) Jerky feeling when navigating during load Using the single-tile approach we get: Smoother feeling when navigating during load Time delay before layer is loaded One large image for each layer No caching of the single tile We have a lot of data editing in the layers, thus a tile-cache might not be that efficient. Are there any best-practices when it comes to tiling? Progressing towards infinitely fast hardware and unlimited data connections, the discussion becomes irrelevant, but what configuration do you percieve as the most user-pleasing?

• Spring Weblfow 2 - Double Submit

  Hello All, I am investigating a possible issue with double submits and I am looking at the possibilty of a double submit from a webflow execution. I have read many times that webflow will handle double submits, there are plenty references here. However I then came across I a forum response on the spring source forums contradicting what I read saying, SWF synchronizes on the conversation. Only one request will be processed at a time per conversation. Take note that if you're using snapshots, then it's possible repeatedly clicking on the submit button will generate a second request. I would recommend setting history to invalidate or discard in the transition from your view-state. We do have snapshots enabled but the book notes that using snapshots actually allows to solve the double submits. Does anyone have any insight on this? Thanks.

  I tried to implement the - (UIView *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView viewForHeaderInSection:(NSInteger)section to get the text label of the header in section of black color instead of the white color, but it looks so different from the default one created by the SDK, mine is so ugly. How to recreate the UIView with exactly the same as the one from the SDK? From Apple documentation: Discussion The table view uses a fixed font style for section header titles. If you want a different font style, return a custom view (for example, a UILabel object) in the delegate method tableView:viewForHeaderInSection: instead.

• Are jQuery and GWT comparable frameworks?

  At work there's a bit of discussion around what client side framework we should use for our front end web applications. Currently it's a showdown between GWT and jQuery and I'm kind of on the fence but leaning towards jQuery. From what I can tell, GWT and jQuery are trying to solve different problems but are compared to each other because they both end up existing in the web applications space. I suspect that if this is the case, then comparing the two may be fruitless so what I'm trying to get my head around is if comparing jQuery to GWT is even an apples to apples comparison in the same way that jQuery and ExtJS can be compared, or would it be more beneficial for our team to ask certain questions of our application and use the answers to determine which framework is a better fit for us?

A lot of people also have a serious dislike for cvs. In many places I have heard a lot of differing opinions on whether or not using vss or cvs is better or worse then using no source control, please rate the worst and explain why!!!!! you rated them this way. Feel free to throw in your own horrible system in the rankings. If you feel it depends on the circumstances try to explain the some of the different scenarios which lead to different rankings. (note:I see a lot of discussion of what is better but little of what is worse.) second note: while both answers are nice I'm looking less for good replacements and more for a comparison of which is worse and more importantly why!!!!!

It surprised me I had never heard about this, so I was wondering what other open source alternatives exist for mainstream websites? I am not asking about forums, eCommerce, wiki's, CMS's, etc, where the market leaders are already well known open source applications (phpBB, osCommerce, Mediawiki, Drupal). But what about open source alternatives for: Social networking (Facebook)? Classified advertising (Craigslist)? Jobs (CareerBuilder)? Dating (eHarmony)? Or any other field that is defined by a commercial website, as Twitter does for microblogging.

• Java sound doesn't work under Linux

  Help! I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms! I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions. Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) can somebody help me figure out what's wrong?

  C++ has several types of styles: MFC, Boost, Google, etc. I would like to examine these styles and determine which one is best for my projects, but I want to read from the official style guidebook. Does anyone have an official guide that they typically use? Here are two that I found.
