If you still want to grab the last living decendent of the phone in India there is good news “would continue to sell its phones till stocks are exhausted while service centers would continue to function”. Ya !  lock up in your safe, wait 20 years, then sell this antique for a fortune. There is will be staff cut and Moto promised to help employees at these difficult times. India is one of the most sort out market for mobile makers, what is running in Googles mind ? May be world is falling apart like Mayans predicted ?

• Ubuntu 12.10 "Turn screen off when inactive for: Never" still turns off

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10, my screen still goes off after about ten minutes. I've been to the Brightness and Lock control panel. The Turn screen off when inactive for: setting is set for Never. I've been through the dconf Editor searching for power, screen, and idle changing parameters. This doesn't seem to have any effect on the display timeout. Here's one more interesting thing, the screen doesn't go off, per se. It just goes black. Meaning, the back lighting is still on, and all the pixels are black. When it goes black, it does a very pleasant quick dim to black. Similarly, it quickly un-dim's after a key press, mouse movement, or mouse click. So, I'm feeling this is more of a software setting the timeout, not a power saving function.

• Cannot get debconf version after delete /var/lib/dpkg

  As a new ubuntu user, I just make a mistaken. I've deleted a folder /var/lib/dpkg/ instead of /var/lib/dpkg/lock :) Now when I execute apt-get -f install then it will display error message: ... E: Cannot get debconf version. Is debconf installed? debconf: apt-extracttemplates failed: No such file or directory ... I've try this tutorial: http://people.adams.edu/~cdmiller/posts/Ubuntu-dpkg-recovery/ but still no luck. How can I fix this issue?

• Why is my partition claiming to be out of space?

  My file system claims to only have 4.5 GB left. While my OS (a folder with in file system) still has 75.2 GB left. I put something near 130 GB on my Ubuntu partition, it should have enough space. I confirmed that I can put things in OS that exceed the space in available file systems, but that makes no sense, OS is listed as a folder inside of file system, why would it have more space than it's parent folder? What is going on? • Force ntfs volumes to be treated like any other by default

  I have a 20 GB NTFS volume that I was planning on using for a variety of purposes, including being readable by windows with little effort. Unfortunately, for some reason, I cannot execute any files on the drive, even after following the answer here (I was able to mount the volume just fine, but the error persists). How can I fix this? • When clicking below window title bar in KDE, window dragging is initiated. Can I change this behavior?

  this one is regarding KDE in Ubuntu 12.04. The thing is that whenever I click below the window title bar in KDE, the window manager always assumes I want to drag the window, not just activate it. Clicking the title bar activates the window without dragging it just fine, however I sometimes find it hard to click because it's rather narrow :) Is there any way to change this behavior (besides the obvious "make your title bar larger" thing)? I also assume this is happening to Gtk applications only (Firefox, Thunderbird, Synaptic), as I have tried it with several KDE apps (KWrite, KTorrent, Gwenview, Konsole) and noticed no such behavior. Thanks in advance!

• Lost the system tray-bar and side panel dockbar disappears when touched

  I have complete confidence that this problem will be resolved by restarting, however, it seems very odd that it should disappear randomly during my session. To put it simply, I've lost the top tray-bar and the side panel disappears when the mouse moves within touch, however if it click and drag the window by the side it comes back (but disappears instantly when touched again (however I can still click on the buttons where they should be). The only guess I have as to why it's happened is a bug, or I've lost a file these GUI things depend on. This is a real pain as some applications now have lost the "File, Edit" menu items as a result of this.

• How to manage permissions on a shared volume for OSX and ubuntu

  On my mac I'm using an unjournaled HFS partition to share files between OSX 10.8 and Ubuntu 12.04. It was a nice thought at first, because Time Machine will automatically backup the volume in OSX, but I soon noticed that OSX and Ubuntu mess with the permission in a way that makes things messy for me. So, in order to fully view and change files, I keep using chmod to apply permissions that which will allow me to fully use a document. But I don't understand why I have to keep applying changes over and over. Is possible to set some kind of permission permanently so that both operating systems will respect permanently? I guess 777 will work, but I thought that this is not a smart thing to do. But as long as 'others' does not get full access (third seven), I see a lock icon on the file in ubuntu.

• Is the "App" side of Windows 8 practical for programmers?

  I like the tablet-friendliness of Windows 8 Apps, and some of the programming apps seem pretty neat, but there are many aspects that make me think I would have difficulty using this format for an efficient programming environment: Unlike the desktop + multiple windows setup, I can't simply drag my files around from source, to FTP or SFTP file managers, between folders, web applications, and into other apps, etc. I can't switch between apps as fast. This could have different implications with different monitor setups, but it seems like a shaky setup for an agile workflow. The split screen functionality is cool, but it doesn't seem to allow for as much maneuverability as the classic desktop setup. This could just require me getting used to the top-left corner shortcut, but it does bother me that I have to move my mouse all the way up there to see my different windows. These aspects could become relevant in the event that Windows were to move further towards their "app" structure and less towards the Windows 7 style. I'm wondering if anyone has been able to utilize the "App" side of Windows 8 for an efficient programming workflow.

• Curiosity on any Smartphones that Run on Android 2.3.3 with Different Screen Reoslution

  I have a question regarding about any smartphones that run only in Android 2.3.3. Is the size of screen or the screen resolution is always HVGA or does it have capable of running this OS (Android 2.3.3) on big screen size (4" to 5") at about 720x1280? I'm thinking of the game's compatibility depending on the version of the Android OS and the screen resolution, which affects the change of coordinates especially for assigning touch buttons and drag-n-drop at exact location, before I'm gonna decide to make one. My program works on the Android 4 ICS and Jellybean, however, will that work on Android 2.3.3 in spite of precise touch coordinate or just dependent on the screen resolution (regardless how large it is) as the X and Y coordinate? And take note, I'm using Eclipse IDE for Java developers.

  I'm working in an Android project with multithreading. Basically I have to wait to the server to respond before sending more data. The data sending task is delimited by the flag boolean hasServerResponded so the Thread will loop infinitely without doing anything until the flag becomes true. Since this boolean isn't declared as volatile (yet), and also looping without doing anything wastes resources, I thought maybe I should use AtomicBoolean and also implement wait() / notify() mechanism. Should I use the AtomicBoolean object notify() and wait() methods or should I create a lock Object?

• Can't adjust brightness on a Sony Vaio T13 ultrabook

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 in a Vaio T13 ultrabook. I cannot use the the Fn+F4 or Fn+F5 to change the brightness. The bubble appears indicating that brightness is being changed but with no visual impact on the screen. I've tried many solutions involving the manipulation of the /etc/default/grub file but none of them worked. Whenever I tried this manipulation the screen still didn't change, however the bubble stopped functioning properly. This is not a problem of the Fn shortcut. Even when I try to change it in the Brightness and Lock on System Settings, the bar does scroll but the screen remains unchanged. Does any one has a way around this mystery?

  An alternative way to request read reciepts Sometime or other we use messaging namespaces like System.Net.Mail or System.Web.Mail to send emails from our applications. When we would need to include headers to request delivery or return reciepts (often called as Message Disposition Notifications) we lock ourselves to the limitation that not all email servers/email clients can satisfy this. We can enhance this border a little now, thanks to a new innovation I discovered from Gawab. It embeds a small invisible image of 1x1 dimension and the image source reads as recieptimg.php?id=2323425324. When this image is requested by the web browser or email client, the serverside handler does a smart mapping based on the ID to indicate that the message was read. We call them as 'Web Bugs'. But wait it is not a fool proof solution since spammers misuse this technique to confirm activeness of an email address and most of the email clients suppress inline images for security reasons. I just thought anyway would share this observation for the benefit of others.

• NDepend Evaluation: Part 3

  NDepend is a Visual Studio add-in designed for intense code analysis with the goal of high code quality. NDepend uses a number of metrics and aggregates the data in pleasing static and active visual reports. My evaluation of NDepend will be broken up into several different parts. In the first part of the evaluation I looked at installing the add-in.  And in the last part I went over my first impressions including an overview of the features.  In this installment I provide a little more detail on a few of the features that I really like. Dependency Matrix The dependency matrix is one of the rich visual components provided with NDepend.  At a glance it lets you know where you have coupling problems including cycles.  It does this with number indicating the weight of the dependency and a color-coding that indicates the nature of the dependency. Green and blue cells are direct dependencies (with the difference being whether the relationship is from row-to-column or column-to-row).  Black cells are the ones that you really want to know about.  These indicate that you have a cycle.  That is, type A refers to type B and type B also refers to Type A. But, that’s not the end of the story.  A handy pop-up appears when you hover over the cell in question.  It explains the color, the dependency, and provides several interesting links that will teach you more than you want to know about the dependency. You can double-click the problem cells to explode the dependency.  That will show the dependencies on a method-by-method basis allowing you to more easily target and fix the problem.  When you’re done you can click the back button on the toolbar. Dependency Graph The dependency graph is another component provided.  It’s complementary to the dependency matrix, but it isn’t as easy to identify dependency issues using the window. On a positive note, it does provide more information than the matrix. My biggest issue with the dependency graph is determining what is shown.  This was not readily obvious.  I ended up using the navigation buttons to get an acceptable view.  I would have liked to choose what I see. Once you see the types you want you can get a decent idea of coupling strength based on the width of the dependency lines.  Double-arrowed lines are problematic and are shown in red.  The size of the boxes will be related to the metric being displayed.  This is controlled using the Box Size drop-down in the toolbar.  Personally, I don’t find the size of the box to be helpful, so I change it to Constant Font. One nice thing about the display is that you can see the entire path of dependencies when you hover over a type.  This is done by color-coding the dependencies and dependants.  It would be nice if selecting the box for the type would lock the highlighting in place. I did find a perhaps unintended work-around to the color-coding.  You can lock the color-coding in by hovering over the type, right-clicking, and then clicking on the canvas area to clear the pop-up menu.  You can then do whatever with it including saving it to an image file with the color-coding. CQL NDepend uses a code query language (CQL) to work with your code just like it was a database.  CQL cannot be confused with the robustness of T-SQL or even LINQ, but it represents an impressive attempt at providing an expressive way to enumerate and interrogate your code. There are two main windows you’ll use when working with CQL.  The CQL Query Explorer allows you to define what queries (rules) are run as part of a report – I immediately unselected rules that I don’t want in my results.  The CQL Query Edit window is where you can view or author your own rules.  The explorer window is pretty self-explanatory, so I won’t mention it further other than to say that any queries you author will appear in the custom group. Authoring your own queries is really hard to screw-up.  The Intellisense-like pop-ups tell you what you can do while making composition easy.  I was able to create a query within two minutes of playing with the editor.  My query warns if any types that are interfaces don’t start with an “I”. WARN IF Count > 0 IN SELECT TYPES WHERE IsInterface AND !NameLike “I” The results from the CQL Query Edit window are immediate. That fact makes it useful for ad hoc querying.  It’s worth mentioning two things that could make the experience smoother.  First, out of habit from using Visual Studio I expect to be able to scroll and press Tab to select an item in the list (like Intellisense).  You have to press Enter when you scroll to the item you want.  Second, the commands are case-sensitive.  I don’t see a really good reason to enforce that. CQL has a lot of potential not just in enforcing code quality, but also enforcing architectural constraints that your enterprise has defined. • Purchase existing domain and transfer to new registrar

  I am purchasing an existing domain from the owner who has it registered with GoDaddy. I want to transfer the domain to another registrar and of course have it under my name. If they update the registrant info to my name then it will lock down for 60 days. That's no good. If they simply transfer it to my registrar, how will they update the registrant info? I know about escrow services, but I don't feel I need one because I trust the seller and the amount is (relatively) small. Advice? Thanks!

• Loss of privileges when enabeling auto log-in to encrypted home folder

  I use Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell and have an encrypted home folder. I enabled auto log-in through the system settings/users-admin menu, as I expected it didn't work (because of my encrypted home folder/user I suspect). But now I don't have privileges to mount my eksternal hard-drive, and I can no longer disable the auto log-in function, since the un-lock button in users-admin menu is grayed out. It seems like my users privileges has been degraded. Does any one have an solution to how I disable auto log-in and regain my privileges?

  What options do I have for pending work that can't acquire a lock via the following sample? System.Threading.Interlocked.CompareExchange<TrustPointStatusEnum> (ref tp.TrustPointStatus, TrustPointStatusEnum.NotInitalized,TrustPointStatusEnum.Loading); Based on my research think I have the following options: I can use Threading.SpinWait (for very quick IO tasks) at the cost of CPU I can use Sleep() which has an unreliable wake up time I'm not sure of any other option, but what I want to make sure of is that all these options work with the .NET 4 async and await keywords, especially if I use Task to run them on a background thread
