  • Java Refuses to Start - Could not reserve enough space for object heap

    - by Randyaa
Background We have a pool of aproximately 20 linux blades. Some are running Suse, some are running Redhat. ALL share NAS space which contains the following 3 folders: /NAS/app/java - a symlink that points to an installation of a Java JDK. Currently version 1.5.0_10 /NAS/app/lib - a symlink that points to a version of our application. /NAS/data - directory where our output is written All our machines have 2 processors (hyperthreaded) with 4gb of physical memory and 4gb of swap space. We limit the number of 'jobs' each machine can process at a given time to 6 (this number likely needs to change, but that does not enter into the current problem so please ignore it for the time being). Some of our jobs set a Max Heap size of 512mb, some others reserve a Max Heap size of 2048mb. Again, we realize we could go over our available memory if 6 jobs started on the same machine with the heap size set to 2048, but to our knowledge this has not yet occurred. The Problem Once and a while a Job will fail immediately with the following message: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. We used to chalk this up to too many jobs running at the same time on the same machine. The problem happened infrequently enough (MAYBE once a month) that we'd just restart it and everything would be fine. The problem has recently gotten much worse. All of our jobs which request a max heap size of 2048m fail immediately almost every time and need to get restarted several times before completing. We've gone out to individual machines and tried executing them manually with the same result. Debugging It turns out that the problem only exists for our SuSE boxes. The reason it has been happening more frequently is becuase we've been adding more machines, and the new ones are SuSE. 'cat /proc/version' on the SuSE boxes give us: Linux version 2.6.5-7.244-bigsmp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)) #1 SMP Mon Dec 12 18:32:25 UTC 2005 'cat /proc/version' on the RedHat boxes give us: Linux version 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-52)) #1 SMP Tue May 17 17:52:23 EDT 2005 'uname -a' gives us the following on BOTH types of machines: UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux No jobs are running on the machine, and no other processes are utilizing much memory. All of the processes currently running might be using 100mb total. 'top' currently shows the following: Mem: 4146528k total, 3536360k used, 610168k free, 132136k buffers Swap: 4194288k total, 0k used, 4194288k free, 3283908k cached 'vmstat' currently shows the following: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 0 0 0 610292 132136 3283908 0 0 0 2 26 15 0 0 100 0 If we kick off a job with the following command line (Max Heap of 1850mb) it starts fine: java/bin/java -Xmx1850M -cp helloworld.jar HelloWorld Hello World If we bump up the max heap size to 1875mb it fails: java/bin/java -Xmx1875M -cp helloworld.jar HelloWorld Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. It's quite clear that the memory currently being used is for Buffering/Caching and that's why so little is being displayed as 'free'. What isn't clear is why there is a magical 1850mb line where anything higher means Java can't start. Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

  • Custom Java Swing Meter Control

    I'm trying to make a custom swing control that is a meter. The arrow will move up and down. Here is my current code, but I feel I've done it wrong. import java.awt.BasicStroke; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.LinearGradientPaint; import java.awt.Polygon; import java.awt.Stroke; import java.awt.geom.Point2D; import java.awt.geom.Rectangle2D; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JPanel; public class meter extends JFrame { Stroke drawingStroke = new BasicStroke(2); Rectangle2D rect = new Rectangle2D.Double(105, 50, 40, 200); Double meterPercent = new Double(0.57); public meter() { setTitle("Meter"); setLayout(null); setSize(300, 300); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); setLocationRelativeTo(null); setVisible(true); } public void paint(Graphics g) { // Paint Meter Graphics2D g1 = (Graphics2D) g; g1.setStroke(drawingStroke); g1.draw(rect); // Set Meter Colors Point2D start = new Point2D.Float(0, 0); Point2D end = new Point2D.Float(0, this.getHeight()); float[] dist = { 0.1f, 0.5f, 0.9f }; Color[] colors = { Color.green, Color.yellow, Color.red }; LinearGradientPaint p = new LinearGradientPaint(start, end, dist, colors); g1.setPaint(p); g1.fill(rect); // Make a triangle - Arrow on Meter int[] x = new int[3]; int[] y = new int[3]; int n; // count of points // Set Points for Arrow Integer meterArrowHypotenuse = (int) rect.getX(); Integer meterArrowTip = (int) rect.getY() + (int) (rect.getHeight() * (1 - meterPercent)); x[0] = meterArrowHypotenuse - 25; x[1] = meterArrowHypotenuse - 25; x[2] = meterArrowHypotenuse - 5; y[0] = meterArrowTip - 20; // Top Left y[1] = meterArrowTip + 20; // Bottom Left y[2] = meterArrowTip; // Tip of Arrow n = 3; // Number of points, 3 because its a triangle // Draw Arrow Border Polygon myTriShadow = new Polygon(x, y, n); // a triangle g1.setPaint(Color.black); g1.fill(myTriShadow); // Set Points for Arrow Board x[0] = x[0] + 1; x[1] = x[1] + 1; x[2] = x[2] - 2; y[0] = y[0] + 3; y[1] = y[1] - 3; y[2] = y[2]; Robot robot = new Robot(); Color colorMeter = robot.getPixelColor(x[2]+10, y[2]); // Draw Arrow Polygon myTri = new Polygon(x, y, n); // a triangle Color colr = new Color(colorMeter.getRed(), colorMeter.getGreen(), colorMeter.getBlue()); g1.setPaint(colr); g1.fill(myTri); } public static void main(String[] args) { new meter(); } } Thanks for looking.

  • error initializing multiple configuration files

    - by lurscher
Hi, during initialization startup on tomcat, the configurations are: 1) a webapp/WEB-INF/web.xml that imports yummy-servlet.xml in contextConfigLocation (although i'm aware that is not required since the servlet-name is yummy it will try to load yummy-servlet.xml by default) 2) a webapp/WEB-INF/yummy-servlet.xml that imports a spring/applicationContext-hibernate.xml file 3) a webapp/WEB-INF/spring/applicationContext-hibernate.xml that imports a applicationContext-dataSource.xml file 4) a webapp/WEB-INF/spring/applicationContext-dataSource.xml i'm getting errors about Failed to import bean definitions from relative location, but the stack trace is not very explicit about exactly what is the problem, i've been looking at these since yesterday and i really don't see any problem on the files my web.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee" xmlns:web="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd" id="WebApp_ID" version="2.5"> <display-name>hello-spring3-RC1</display-name> <context-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value>/WEB-INF/yummy-servlet.xml</param-value> </context-param> <!-- <context-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value>/WEB-INF/spring/applicationContext-hibernate.xml</param-value> </context-param> --> <!-- Location of the Log4J config file, for initialization and refresh checks. • How fast 3D rendering a still image per client request, in server can be made?

    - by user1767797
I am trying to make a service that needs to quickly render simple 3D scenes on the server, and then return them as a JPEG. It should be able to accommodate mass users (client) so that it serve rendered image per client request. User-HTML-Server-(perhaps renderfarm)-Result display. Is current technology able to give a return really quickly like in 5 seconds, after it renders 3D scene like clothes ?? Thanks.

  • JDK 7u10 Released !

    - by user9148683
Java Development Kit 7 Update 10 (JDK 7u10) release is now live! You can download it from Java SE Downloads page. The Java™ SE Development Kit 7, Update 10 Release Notes contains information about this release. The highlights of this release include: New Certified System Configurations - Mac OS X 10.8 and Windows 8 Security Feature Enhancements: The ability to disable any Java application from running in the browser. This mode can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. New dialogs to warn you when the JRE is insecure (either expired or below the security baseline) and needs to be updated. The documentation at Setting the Level of Security for the Java Client and Java Control Panel explains these features in detail.

  • From actionscript to google's datastore through java.

    - by Jonathan
I'm working on a flash game written in pure actionscript 3.0 in Flex. I've just finished implementing replays for the game, but want to store the top 10 hiscores' replay data on my google-app-engine'd website. I'm using Java for the app-engine stuff in Eclipse in java but I have no idea how to deal with communicating to my java code from my actionscript code. I'll need to both read and write from actionscript - java - datastore. Does anyone have any experience with this? For note, I'm horribly noob with anything to do with web development. I hear you can pass arguments to a URL when calling it, comparable to command-line arguments on a desktop executable and if so then sending all the data as a large string would be doable... The question then would be how to call a url from AS3 code with additional data and then how to catch that on the java side. Thanks to anyone who can help. Jono

  • What should Java programmer learn?

Hi, I code only for 3 years now, I came thru C/C++, Delphi, SQL, VBA but I mostly code in Java. I do 90% GUIs, atm with Java swing. But time changes, so I have few questions : Should I switch to web development from GUIs? If GUIs, is C# and WPF suitable ? Should I learn .NET (C#,asp.net) or continue with Java (learn Spring, hibernate, JSP, JSF, JPA) ? What is faster to learn? Finish Java or start .NET Should I really consider using something other than Java/.NET ? Think of job opportunities. Thanx

  • Java: Read POST data from a socket on an HTTP server

    - by danpalmer
I have a website (python/django) that needs to use a load of Java resources that may or may not be on the same server. Therefore I am writing a mini webserver in Java that will receive a request and then when processing is finished, POST some data back to a url on the site. I have got the java code receiving connections on sockets and responding with some simple HTML. My problem is that I will POST data to the Java server and that code needs to act on the data. How do I go about reading the data that is posted in the HTML request, if it is even possible. If not, is there any other way you would do this. If you think I am going about this in completely the wrong way then please tell me and I will consider another method, but after conversing with some Java developers, this seemed like the best way for what I was doing. Thanks

  • Catching java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

    - by dotsid
Documentation for java.lang.Error says: An Error is a subclass of Throwable that indicates serious problems that a reasonable application should not try to catch But as java.lang.Error is subclass of java.lang.Throwable I can catch this type of throwable. I understand why this is not good idea to catch this sort of exceptions. As far as I understand, if we decide to caught it, the catch handler should not allocate any memory by itself. Otherwise OutOfMemoryError will be thrown again. So, my question is: is there any real word scenarios when catching java.lang.OutOfMemoryError may be a good idea? if we catching java.lang.OutOfMemoryError how can we sure that catch handler doesn't allocate any memory by itself (any tools or best practicies)? Thanks a lot.

  • Should Java IOException have been an unchecked RuntimeException?

    - by Derek Mahar
Do you agree that the designers of Java class java.io.IOException should have made it an unchecked run-time exception derived from java.lang.RuntimeException instead of a checked exception derived only from java.lang.Exception? I think that class IOException should have been an unchecked exception because there is little that an application can do to resolve problems like file system errors. However, in When You Can't Throw An Exception, Elliotte Rusty Harold claims that most I/O errors are transient and so you can retry an I/O operation several times before giving up: For instance, an IOComparator might not take an I/O error lying down, but — because many I/O problems are transient — you can retry a few times, as shown in Listing 7: Is this generally the case? Can a Java application correct I/O errors or wait for the system to recover? If so, then it is reasonable for IOException to be checked, but if it is not the case, then IOException should be unchecked so that business logic can delegate handling this exception to a separate system error handler.

  • Shipping Java code with data baked into the .jar

    - by Andrew
I need to ship some Java code that has an associated set of data. It's a simulator for a device, and I want to be able to include all of the data used for the simulated records in the one .JAR file. In this case, each simulated record contains four fields (calling party, called party, start of call, call duration). What's the best way to do that? I've gone down the path of generating the data as Java statements, but IntelliJ doesn't seem particularly happy dealing with a 100,000 line Java source file! Is there a smarter way to do this? In the C#/.NET world I'd create the data as a separate file, embed it in the assembly as a resource, and then use reflection to pull that out at runtime and access it. I'm unsure of what the appropriate analogy is in the Java world. FWIW, Java 1.6, shipping for Solaris.

  • google maps export driving directions to kml file - java geogoogle

    - by maiky
Hi Sorry at first for my poor grammar. I am writing a program in Java using geogoogle (Google Geocoder Java API) http://geo-google.sourceforge.net/ I need from two specific points to get the walking directions between these points and also these info to be exported in a KML file. Do you know how can I do it from Java? Is there an API that I can use? Perhaps making a call from the java program to google and handle the result - but how can it be done? Thanks in advance. PS. Google gives this functionality as i saw here http://www.gringod.com/2008/02/26/save-google-maps-driving-directions/ but I need all these to be called from Java.

  • Socksifying a Java ServerSocket - how to approach

    - by Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
I would like to have a Java program running on network A have a ServerSocket living on another network B through a proxy. I have played with a SOCKS5 proxy (which works) but it appears that all the proxy facilities in Java only work with client connections, not with ServerSockets (no constructor taking a Proxy argument). Asking Google gives much hay and few needles. What is the approach I should take to get this running? If a specific client is better than a generic SOCKS or web proxy then fine, but it needs to be Java (that leaves sshd out). Target JVM is preferrably Java 5, and then Java 6.

  • Controlling maximum Java standalone running in Linux

    - by Gnanam
Hi, We've developed a Java standalone program. We've configured in our Linux (RedHat ES 4) cron schedule to execute this Java standalone every 10 minutes. Each standalone may sometime take more than 1 hour to complete, or sometime it may complete even within 5 minutes. My problem/solution I'm looking for is, the number of Java standalones executing at any time should not exceed, for example, 5 threads. So, for example, before even a Java standalone/thread starts, if there are already 5 threads running, then this thread should not be started; otherwise this would indirectly start creating OutOfMemoryError problems. How do I control this? I would also like to make this 5 thread as configurable. Other Information: I've also configured -Xms and -Xmx heap size settings. Is there any tool/mechanism by which we can control this? I also heard about Java Service Wrapper. What is this all about?

  • Java: design problem with final-value and empty constructor

  • Where do Java Applets live?

    - by Wendi Peters
I'm trying to figure out where java Applets that I run from the browser live. I'm using Firefox 3.0 on Windows XP with Java 1.6 if that makes any difference. From the Java Control Panel on the toolbar, I can access "Temporary Internet Files - Settings" to find the Java cache. From there I can show the resources and see a file called "dws2010066.dat". Does this resource correspond to a file on disk? I did a search in the Java cache/my whole computer and came up empty handed.

  • How to get java to recognize symbolic links under cygwin

    - by Keith Randall
Here's a very simple java program to print the first line of a file: import java.io.* public class test { public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { System.out.print(new BufferedReader(new FileReader(args[0])).readLine()); } } When I run this program under cygwin and pass it the name of a symbolic link, it prints the contents of the symbolic link, not the target of that link: $ echo foo > testfile $ ln -s testfile symlink_to_testfile $ java test testfile foo $ java test symlink_to_testfile !<symlink> ?t e s t f i l e How do I convince java to follow the symlink? I was hoping there was something simpler than implementing the redirect myself.

  • How to stop java application using a shell script

    - by Fernando Moyano
I have a shell script, which is run under a opensuse linux, that starts a java application (under a jar), the script is: #!/bin/sh #export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java #PATH=/usr/local/java/bin:${PATH} #---------------------------------# # dynamically build the classpath # #---------------------------------# THE_CLASSPATH= for i in `ls ./lib/*.jar` do THE_CLASSPATH=${THE_CLASSPATH}:${i} done #---------------------------# # run the application # #---------------------------# java -server -Xms512M -Xmx1G -cp ".:${THE_CLASSPATH}" com.package.MyApp > myApp.out 2>&0 & This script is working fine. Now, what I want, is to write a script to kill gracefully this app, something that allows me to kill it with the -15 argument from Linux kill command. The problem, is that there will be many java applications running on this server, so I need to specifically kill this one. Any help? Thanks in advance, Fernando

  • What is the most efficient Java Collections library?

    - by dehmann
What is the most efficient Java Collections library? A few years ago, I did a lot of Java and had the impression back then that trove is the best (most efficient) Java Collections implementation. But when I read the answers to the question "Most useful free Java libraries?" I noticed that trove is hardly mentioned. So which Java Collections library is best now? UPDATE: To clarify, I mostly want to know what library to use when I have to store millions of entries in a hash table etc. (need a small runtime and memory footprint).
