• Is there a way to backup all my files and replace with 0-byte files with same name?

  My main drive on laptop keeps filling up so I take a backup on a USB and delete the original files. But then I find myself getting (downloading or getting from someone else) files that I already have backed-up but couldn't recall at the moment. So is there a way I can keep a 0-byte file with the same name as teh backed-up copy so that when I'm asked whether to overwrite the existing file, I can easily choose no knowing I probably have this file already in the backup. EDIT: better yet, replace with a shortcut(.lnk) on the external drive so I can access the files hassle free and not get any errors because of 0-byte files being accidentally opened.

  I have confused myself following a VLSM tutorial and need to get my understanding confirmed, would this be the correct format, or am i away off again 172.31.0.0 VLSM this network address for as many subnetworks as possible, with no more than 14 hosts in each subnetwork. Show the subnet mask used. As the ip address is class b and contains 16 bits in the network portion, this means that we can have 2^16 = 65536 possible networks, to give each of these networks a maximum of 14 hosts we would use the subnet prefix \28 for each subnet. • CentOS-Like configuration of Vim on Ubuntu

  Whenever I use a CentOS System, there's always a pleasant configuration of vim which mainly does the following: Remembering position of closed files Colour mode (!!!) Bash has colours There's lots more, just not something i can recall on the spot. Then, i go to ubuntu and its all black and white, no nice vim config etc. I have to use Ubuntu, and I hate ubuntu because of this. I know I can all configure it by myself, so my question is: How can I configure the Ubuntu system to behave (aesthetically) like CentOS? PS to future self: I will be stoned to death for asking such a question.

• Motherboard Issue - 3 Beep Bios (memory error) despite new RAM

  I have an Intel dG43RK motherboard, bought new and sealed, and have tried two different brands and speeds of RAM with a 3-beep BIOS indicating a memory error, which also occurs without RAM installed (as it should). The memory tried is; 1x4GB 1333 Kingston HyperX DDR3 RAM (New and Sealed) 2x4GB Team Elite 1066 DDR3 RAM (New and Sealed) I have tried multiple configurations and seating layouts and still no luck. I also have a GT520 graphics card on board as I dislike in-built graphics in most cases and had it at hand (also new and sealed). The only used parts are the CPU, which worked in my previous tower and was directly taken from the PC into the new set-up and the CPU Fan which will be replaced with a new fan in the foreseeable future once this is resolved. I've run out of ideas myself and any help is appreciated.

  First of all there is pdsh which is essentially a parallel distributed shell which may execute commands on a list of given hosts. However, I find myself in an IPv6 only problem setting. It seems that pdsh is not able to use IPv6, as I am getting error messages: pdsh -w ^hostnames my_command pdsh@myhost: gethostbyname("foobar") failed I also tried to use IPv6 addresses only, which also didn't work. So how do you run a single shell script for administrative purpose (no SGE stuff, or similar) on a bunch of hosts that is IPv6 reachable only?

• How to link data in different worksheets

  I tried consolidation but I can not get the following to work as it keeps saying no data consolidated. Can somebody try this dummy application and if they figure out how to do the following below can give me a step by step guide so I can attempt myself to learn. I'm not sure if I need to use any coding for this: In the dummy application I have 2 worksheets. One known as "1st", the other "Cases". In the "1st" worksheet you can insert and delete records for the "Case" table at the bottom, what I want to do is insert a row into the Case Table in worksheet "1st" and enter in the data for that row. What should happen is that data should be automatically be updated in the table in the "Cases" worksheet. But I can't seem to get this to work. • Does a single LACP channel over multiple switches increase redundancy?

  I am curious for opinions, findings, or evidence that having multiple interfaces bonded using LACP to ports in multiple switches can increase redundancy. Previously bonded interfaces have always been to a single switch, with a redundant channel to another port. Without getting into vendor specifics, my thought is that as this is a single LACP, the likelihood that an event or change could lead to a wide service outage. Without having the spare equipment or time to test this single channel over diverse switches, could anyone with a greater networking knowledge than myself, tell me if there a network side event that would bring down the network connectivity to a server that had created a bonded interface to two ports on separate switches? Does the use of bonded ethernet channels across multiple switches (that we are advised that we can use) from the server, provide both improved throughput (unquestionably), and improved redundancy (uncertain). Could/would network events such as switch failure, port migration, patching, recovery, etc, cause the channel for both server network interfaces to be unavailable? Thanks in advance.

  Hey SuperUsers, I hope this is the right section to post this kind of question. If it's not, I am sorry. But to my question: I created a working WordPress blog, running locally with MAMP Pro. I wanted to share my site, and thought I would go public with it, but self hosted. I signed up at DynDNS for my domain and got it working. People can connect, myself included of course. But here goes my problem: Everytime I try to access my website (**.dyndns.info:8888), I am able to access it, but the theme and pictures are gone, so it's only pure text with some links. I can provide a picture of the website if you want it? But what is it I am doing wrong? I tried to enable Web Sharing, but that didn't make a difference. • Using command line to connect to a wireless network with an http login

  I'm trying to connect to a wifi network where it hijacks all requests and redirects you to a page where you have to agree to a terms of use before it lets you connect to the actual outside world. This is a pretty common practice, and usually doesn't pose much of a problem. However, I've got a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 server with no windowing system. How can I use the command line to agree to the terms of use? I don't have internet access on the computer to download packages via apt-get or anything like that. Sure, I can think of any number of workarounds, but I suspect there's an easy way to use wget or curl or something. Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

• Cannot resolve a single A Record from client machine

  I set up a simple Bind server on my VPS and it is working properly. The problem occurs with my local windows machines, which are connected to internet through the home router. I created an A-record named 'dev' and it is invisible from my local network for some reason, though people from other locations can resolve dev.mydomain.com. Ironically, dev.mydomain.com cannot be resolved for myself only. If I add another A-record, say, 'gamma' then it becomes visible from my local windows machines instantly. So this is just for that particular 'dev' name. The only difference is that I had dev.mydomain.com server on another IP but that was a month ago; all nameservers have been changed since then. I tried to reboot my router and flushed dns cache on windows machines: no result. Thank you in advance.

• Access RAID configuration in x3550M2

  I'm trying to configure RAID in a IBM x3550 M2 server. I can't find any messages on boot about any hotkey to access the configuration utility. I wasn't able either in BIOS. The card is a on board LSI 1068e. I can't find the original CD's shipped with the server, but I downloaded Server Guide 9.21 from IBM web. Booted with that, and only getting stuck at "Windows loading"p. Tried with a 8.? version from a x3550 (M1), but it was less useful. Although I do not consider myself an expert, I'm starting to feel like a newbie luser. Any help?

• Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? I have win7 and 8gb of RAM I installed myself Answer to comment:Asus N71JQ Unknown time, but it seems differents if I look at the last entry in the logs I have no information to tell you, that's why I ask for tool and not the solution. • Can't delete folder and I am admin. "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from..."

  I can't delete a certain folder in windows 7. It's not a system folder. It was created by an app. I get an error message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Tony....". I am an admin and logged in as myself Tony. I have full ownership of the folder with full control permission. I rebooted the machine. I killed the app which created the folder. I am out of ideas. Why is Windows 7 not letting me delete the folder?

• Visual Studio 2010: Is it possible to force editor to use ANSI rather than UTF-8?

  I am having issues with some files in automated processes, specifically with batch files and sql files. Visual Studio seems to create these as UTF-8 rather than ansi and adds some kind of special characters to the beginning of the file (I think this is a called a pre-amble) This breaks running batch files and running swl files through osql.exe. I have had issues myself in the past in creating text files using C#, but can get around that through encoding. However its seems a bit strange I cant use Visual studio to create batch files and sql files in a database project for automation.

• HP Photosmart C5280 black ink not printing properly

  I just got a used HP Photosmart C5280 from my father in law. There is a problem with the black ink, though. Sometimes, it doesn't print and when it does, it's not really black. An example can be seen at the following link, where I created three black boxes on a Word page and printed. The outcome is somewhat blueish: Other tests with black text only come out as blank pages. I have tried using the print head cleaning utility from the menu of the printer as well as doing the cleaning myself with alcohol. Nothing has worked. Any ideas before I throw out the black cartridge?

• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! • Would there be any problems with DEP turned off?

  I recently moved to a fresh Windows 8 x64 system and I learned that my favourite firewall (JPF - Jetico Personal Firewall) doesn't get along with Win8x64 (CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION errors), but I can not do without JPF, so I kind of tried everything I could think of (test mode, debugging, various system changes), but I was still getting blue screens because of the firewall driver/software. I know for sure that it is the firewall that is causing the problems because I get blue screens as soon as I install it and they stop when I uninstall it. I Also tested it thoroughly on virtual computers. Anyway, I have discovered that by completely turning DEP off by using this command: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff the firewall would not cause blue screens anymore. So my question is, what could go wrong with DEP completely turned off? Note: I do not care much about hardware/windows security, I keep myself secured by using sandboxes and virtual computers (and I also have backups), so I'm not concerned with viruses and root kits or whatever people are freaking out about.

• Remote desktop pressing Windows key randomly

  When I'm using remote desktop at work from one specific PC it has a quirk which is really quite irritating. I'll be typing away and suddenly the Windows key will be pressed, things start minimising, explorer launches, workstation gets locked (but it locks the remote workstation, so I have that wallpaper in the background, rather than the wallpaper from the local machine as I would expect). I've swapped keyboards, even though it didn't seem to be related to hardware and it made no difference. Done some internet digging and found someone saying it's related to using windows-l to lock the workstation. I've tried to stop myself using that shortcut to see if it helps and have failed miserably :D It's happening to at least one other user remote desktopping from the same machine to a different PC. Reinstalling isn't really an option (I don't admin the PC or I would have tried it, grr), although I could probably get it done if it would definitely resolve the problem. Any ideas?

• Is email forwarding to the sender's address usually blocked in Mail servers / MTA?

  I've noticed that email forwarding to an address seems not to work if I send an email from the address to which I am forwarding email. This happens for GMail and Fasthosts mail servers. e.g I send an email to [email protected] from [email protected] , [email protected] is set to forward to [email protected] and the email never arrives. I realise this seems logical but it is a potential cause of confusion when testing email functionality in a web application (for me, anyway ;-). I would just like to know if this is standard for all MTA software so I can avoid confusing myself.

• Combine OS partion with data partition on NAS4Free/FreeNAS

  I recently built a NAS4Free (formerly FreeNAS) machine using a 256MB (yes, MB) USB drive for the OS. When I did the original install, I had the bright idea of making the OS partition just big enough for the OS and a then creating a second partition using the remainder of the drive to store stuff pertaining to the OS. I never really found a use for the data partition and I ended up running out of space on the OS partition, so now I'd like to combine the partitions into a single partition. Is this something that is possible to do while everything is up and running? If it comes down to it, I can take down the machine and do a fresh install of the OS using the entire space of the USB drive, but I'd like to use this as an opportunity to better familiarize myself with FreeBSD/UNIX type systems. If this is possible, will it interfere with the NAS4Free things? The data partition shows up in the web interface under the disks section. If I end up manually changing the partitions, I'd be concerned with NAS4Free getting confused by the missing partition.

• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this?   I want to buy a MacBook Air for my wife with a 128GB SSD. She has to use Windows 7 but I would like to keep OS X for myself to use somtimes. Using Bootcamp, is it feasible to install the following? Mac partition: 36GB with Mac OS X and Microsoft Office 2011 Word, Excel & Powerpoint and Skype. (minimal use) Windows partition: 92GB with Windows 7 professional and Microsoft Office 2010 Word, Excel & Powerpoint, and Skype (daily use) Media to be kept on SD card or external USB3 drive. (Note: Using Parrallels may save space, but my wife won't go for the user experience)

  I'd like to retrieve the following stats from rsnapshot files synced added files modded files deleted files Is there a feature to retrieve these in rsnapshot, or is there another product that's able to do it? EDIT: As requested, I'll try to show that I'm not just asking what I want to do without any research. I wasn't able to locate any rsnapshot feature doing this. Maybe I'm searching in a wrong direction. So, I've built a not very pretty script, called each time before rsnapshot is ran. This Perl script stores each file MD5, in order to compare backup files structures between rsnapshot updates. I'm pretty sure it's worthless to show this code here. I think that keeping an eye on what change on a server, for example, is a useful feature. So, I'm asking. @pauska Most of the time, I'm trying to search for an answer myself, which is not the case here. Thanks
