• Re-cased my computer now the power plug keeps shorting

  I've just re-cased my computer. I got the new case free and thought I'd be able to swap everything over myself but apparently I've done something wrong. I'm OK with components generally but wasn't totally confident about doing this. So, my question is, when setting up a new PC or moving old components into a new case, what could I have done which causes the power cable plug to short/fuse when I plug it in?. Is this likely to be an issue with the cables from my PSU, or could it be the internal case connectors? What steps would you take to diagnose the problem? I'd rather not start again if I don't have to...! Thanks in advance,

• Cannot Delete an Empty Folder in Windows 7

  I've used this question's answer by user "Moab" to give myself permission to delete an empty folder, so that I no longer get "accessed denied". However, now when I try removing this folder, I get a message that says "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." This is merely my "eclipse" (IDE) folder that I totally emptied out and am trying to delete, but for some reason cannot. I've tried quite a few things: Via Windows Explorer: Right Click - Delete Via Command Prompt RD /S /Q eclipse del /F eclipse rmdir /S eclipse I'm out of ideas, and I'd really like to delete this folder without having to install any software. I've done a bit of research and this is all I found that I could try. Does anyone have any other ideas?

My requirements are: should be accessible via a browser should be open source must be installable (dropbox is a no-go) must have an option to put a access time limit on a file must perform garbage collection automatically after a file expires must be able to mark files as public or private an option to protect a file via a pin-code for users without accounts in the system would be nice to have The problem is I don't even know what to search for - all my googling results in either complete groupware solutions or p2p file sharing software. • Email server - Disk quota sizes - suggestions?

  Working out a new server for an agency of 200 Employees - with approx 240 email accounts. Internally I'm arguing with myself over the amount of drive space to allocate to each user for the disk quota, I'm just looking for suggestions. Once i have a quota size decided, it will define the solution for storage. I've had everything from 4 GB per account ( which i feel is being generous ) down to 500 Mb ( with is rather restrictive in today's day and age. ) Thing is 4 GB per acocunt is just under 1 TB of allocated storage for email alone. Does anyone follow a "rule of thumb" or have thoughts on this? thanks in advance

• Excel: How do I copy hyperlink address from one column of text to another column with different text?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names in a certain format. There are 200-odd names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to reformat the name order so it is "Surname, Name" rather than "Name Surname" and retain the hyperlink in the newly formatted column. I have achieved "Surname, Name" easily by splitting the names into two columns (using LEFT and RIGHT formulae) - forename and surname - then I have a new column with a formula to return "Surname, Name." However, the hyperlinks are not in that new column and I need them. I don't want to do this manually, for obvious reasons. I cannot find a way of copying just hyperlinks from column A without copying the text from column A. So, effectively, what I need is some sort of macro to take, for example, the hyperlink from A2 and copy it to H2, with H2 still retaining the updated ordering of name. I don't have the knowledge to write this myself, so would appreciate solutions.

• Two domains accessing same folder

  I've just taken a new role in a school and am still familiarizing myself with their network, how ever I have recently been given a task and I'm having a little trouble finding out the fundementals of it. I have an admin network/domain 10.49.x.x and a classroom network/domian 192.168.1.x both connect to a Proxy server 10.49.202.231/192.168.1.51. Each domain has it's own shared folders as you'd expect, files and software installs etc, how ever there is a folder "staff" on the classroom network that all the teachers on the classroom network can access. The users on the admin network would like to access this same folder. How do I go about making this happen?

• Repeat the csv header twice without "Append" (PowerShell 1.0)

  I have prepared a PowerShell script to export a list of system users in CSV format. The script can output the users list with Export-csv with single header row (the header row at top). However my requirement is to repeat the header row twice in my file. It is easy to achieve in PowerShell 3.0 with "Append" (e.g. $header | out-file $filepath -Append) Our server envirnoment is running PowerShell 1.0. Hence I cannot do it. Is there any workaround? I cannot manually add it myself. Thank you.

• Linux- passwordless ssh from system (root) script

  What's the easiest way to have a system script (running as root) execute remote commands over ssh? I've written some scripts that execute commands remotely via ssh, and they work great when I run them as myself, as I've set up ssh-agent and keys for passwordless login. I'd like to call these when my laptop docks and undocks. I've been successful at running arbitrary scripts when docking/undocking, but since the ACPI event scripts run as root, trying to run my ssh script fails during authentication. I tried using sudo with the -u and -i flags to simulate running the script as my user, e.g.: sudo -u redmoskito -i /home/redmoskito/bin/remote_command which successfully finds my private key and tries to use it, but the ssh-agent credentials are still missing, so it still needs my passphrase.

  I have a front SOAP web-server under Linux. It will have to communicate with Windows Servers VM listening each on a HTTP port, for a HTTP POST request. The chosen VM should return a report of the task to the SOAP client. In the SOAP requests, there's a special variable : the priority of the request (kind of SLA), and my question is coming right now : I think of using a ha software (nginx, HAProxy, HeartBeat...) that can manage priority in this point of view. Is it relevant or do you think I need to implement a queue by myself with some specific developments? Ex: I have a SOAP requests with low priority in the pipe : the weight priority for these VM should be decreased if I have high priority SOAP requests at the same time. Any clue will be really appreciated.

• Windows 7 RDP Fullscreen mode

  I have a problem with remote desktop connection in Windows 7. When I connect to remote computer I would like to switch to fullscreen like I did in previous versions - just by clicking maximize. When I was in fullscreen mode and I moved the mouse to the upper border of the screen a nice bar appeared and I could minimize rdp or close it. In Windows seven when I click on the maximize button the window maximizes like a normal window - menu start/taskbar(whatever you call it) is still visible and because the resolution of the rdp client desktop is set like on the computer that I'm using it's not fully visible and scrollbars appear. That's really annoying. Can anyone tell me what to do? Is it a bug or maybe there is a "magic shortcut" that is poorly documented and does the trick? (I was trying to find it myself first ofcoz, but no result)

• How to run statically linked programs on a shell account?

  I have a shell account where I am not allowed to compile anything. There are however tools I need to run, some very simple ones like Midnight Commander, mcedit, most, jed I am trying to find a staically linked version that "just works" in my shell. Could anyone give me any advice on where I could find statically builds? I have not been able to find it with google. I could compile it myself, but I would have to find out which headers I need to compile for. I have never tried to do it before, so any help would be greatly apprechiated! • Should I be using Windows Live Mail or Outlook?

  I have been using Windows Live Mail now for a few years, and like the interface, ect ect. Just having a clear out of my domains emails, and think I should set up the other accounts properly. I have Outlook (using 2010 beta), so I thought maybe I should use it? Can anyone give me reasons for and against both bits of software? I did look for some comparisons between the two, but can't find much. Plus I always value up to date information. Bit more background: Using 1 Hotmail and 5 IMAP accounts (possibly more). Use a Windows Mobile. Any way I can sync the calendar and tasks OTA to my hotmail and back down to outlook? I know this is probably more a discussion question (sorry), but I would argue that it can be answered, as it is a question relating to what I myself, in my circumstances would be best. • Enable click-and-drag scrolling in Windows 8 / Metro?

  In Windows 8 (Metro interface) I find myself trying to click and drag the background to scroll again and again, which does not work (I'm using a mouse, not touch). Also, scrolling with the scroll wheel, the bottom scrollbar, or the cursor keys is not nearly as smooth as I've seen in videos, or on tablets. Is there any way to enable smooth kinetic scrolling with the mouse? So that I can click and drag lists or multi-screen displays around? I remember seeing this in a video. I'm not sure if there was some third-party tool involved or not.

• Compare Error logs across service fleet, find unique errors

  I'm looking for a tool where I can list the servers to check, the location of the file and it would return a list of the most common errors across those servers (say like 2 or 3 servers for report brevity) and get a report something like this Server.A Server.B Server.C -------- -------- -------- 42 error.X 39 error.X 61 error.X 21 error.Y 7 error.Y 5 error.A 17 error.B 6 error.A 4 error.Y 4 error.A 2 error.R 3 error.S 3 error.R 1 error.S 1 error.R Of course, excluding timestamps and other error details and just grepping out the common sub-strings and listing them like so. I'd be able to look at the table and see that error.B is unique to Server.A and conclude that there is something up with Server.A. Does something like this already exist? Is this something I'll have to code myself? I'm not necessarily looking for this specific report, just the functionality to find unique errors across a set of error logs.

• Unable to remove/hide icons from desktop folder

  I wish to hide some windows icons from my desktop folder1, but cannot. When I click delete, it says they will be deleted from my desktop (which they already are), but they remain visible in the desktop folder, which is where I wish them removed. Is there any way I can remove these? (I always use Win+E which really lets me get to all of these easy enough). Offending icons: Libraries, Homegroup, User folder, Computer, Network, Control Panel, and Recycle Bin. For those who might be wondering why, I find myself in this folder a bit to often (including when uploading a file), and find these nothing but clutter, especially as these always default to the top. Thanks for your help! 1 By desktop folder, I mean the folder you would see by going to "My Computer" and clicking "Desktop" on the top left under Favorites. Note: Changing my "Desktop Icon Settings" under "Personalize" does not affect the desktop folder, but rather just the desktop view.

• Monitor windows startup process

  My win7 starts up pretty slow lately. I think it's some kind of malware, but my antivirus software doesn't pick up anything. How could i monitor the startup processes myself? It seems to me like either something's doing a lot of work, or some important windows process hangs for a while, since there's stuff that i can do while it's starting (like start a console), and stuff that i can't do (like execute the systeminfo command in the console) So if you happen to know how i can monitor my system, that would be great. • Updating solr on a ColdFusion 9 install?

  I'm thinking about upgrading the solr install included with ColdFusion 9 to the latest Apache release. This raises a few questions: Is there a compelling reason not to upgrade to 3.6 (is it slower than, more cumbersome than, or backwards-incompatible with 1.4) altogether? The solr install included with CF9 is customized. Is there a way to customize it myself, or to at least fool CF into treating it like its predecessor? Will all of my existing indexes work as-is (are?) with the new version? Has anyone out there on ServerFault done the upgrade? I'm especially interested in hearing about unforeseen or unexpected effects from the upgrade.

  I want to remotely control my home desktop PC (running Windows 7 Professional), mainly to perform the following tasks: Downloading email attachments, and sending emails with attachments Running UI-less programs whose only inputs are files and whose only outputs are files So far, the only solution I have found is to use Remote Desktop to connect to my PC, but this is very slow and inefficient, especially when there is no fast Internet connection available other than my cell phone's. • Is there any way to properly display negative time spans in Excel?

  Is there any way to make Excel show a negative time span? If I subtract two time values (say, when subtracting the actual amount of time spent on something from the amount of time planned for it) and the result is negative, Excel just fills the result cell with hashes to notify me that the result cannot be displayed as a time value. Even OpenOffice.org Calc and Google Spreadsheets can display negative time values. Is there a way to work around that issue by using conditional formatting? I really don't want to create some workaround by calculating the hours and minutes myself or anything like that.

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • Replace Certificate using Plesk 11

  I am not an admin, but a programmer. But how it is, if you're the only guy who knows about computers, everyone shoves those tasks to you. A certificate of a domain recently expired. The domains are managed using Plesk 11, on a Linux system, Apache2.2. I was given a new certificate from the host, and it is one single .pem file. However, Plesk asks me for a .crt file, a private key and some CA file. I have neither, only this single .pem file the host claims to be the certificate. Since I myself never did anything with SSL certificates, I would really appreciate if anyone can tell me what to do with this file and how to properly add a new one so the old one can be removed.

• First Linux - Ubuntu - should I change anything right away?

  I'm going to be getting a new system next week. I'm finally going to take the leap and run Linux as the native OS on it. Seems like a standard install of Ubuntu is the way to go for a newbie. I'm planning on 10.04 LTS. Is there anything that I should change right away that will cause me problems down the road? I'll be using this system for web development, mainly programming PHP. I'll be using my old laptop for testing with IE and Safari, at least until I either use Wine or VirtualBox to run them on the new machine. I think I'm going to force myself to learn Vim while I'm at it.
