• Ubuntu 12.04 very slow on samsung netbook

  I have a samsung netbook n150 1Gb Ram (Intel graphic card), 1,66GHz Intel Atom processor. It was working great with the ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition, really fast boot very eficient but I have updated to 12.04 (the netbook edition doesn't exist anymore) and now the system is so slow: slow boot, sometimes it doesn't even boot properly, strange screen light on and off behaviour, when you click on an icon takes for ever to open the app even the terminal it takes like more than 10s! It seems that this new distro was made for a far more powerful systems than this netbook. I am considering to revert back to 10.04 or choose another linux distro but is there anythhing i can do to fix these problems? Any body else had similar problems. Thanks in advance

• What are the benefits of a disk install vs. Wubi? And can I migrate my settings easily?

  I chose to do the Wubi install because it was short, simple, and easy to reverse (no messing with partitions required). To be honest, I can handle the lack of a hibernate function. I haven't really heard many other benefits of installing on a separate partition than hibernation and negligibly faster hard disk read/write. Yet almost everyone I encounter seems to have opted for the disk installation. Are there more benefits I should be aware of, especially as a college student who wants a fast, efficient machine for documents, web browsing, etc. (nothing big like gaming, I can run that on Windows)? Also, I have a fair amount of settings and packages installed that I spent a bit of time on and would rather not have to do again. Is there any way I can migrate all of these settings from the virtual disk on my C:/ drive (Wubi installation) to the disc installation in another partition? (I have a 16GB USB drive if that'll do the trick)

• How to get mixer applet for "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo"

  In pavucontrol, I can choose between RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series] and Built-in Audio. When the former is enabled, videos on (among others) Youtube play way too fast, but this answer solved my problem (though I don't know why). However, when I use Built-in Audio instead of RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series], the mixer in my applet appears to be disabled; the icon is replaced by a blank and changing the volume has no effect, as the applet apparently only relays to RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series]. How do I get an applet to control the volume for Built-in Audio instead?

• Minecraft: Slow performance OUT of the game

  I downloaded Minecraft yesterday to see what the fuss is about, brilliant game! When playing in Windowed mode, if I try and do anything else, i.e. use the computer, when the game is paused, the computer is incredibly slow, it takes a minute just to type a short message into empathy. Also, once I quit the game, the computer remains slow for about 5 minutes, until it magically frees up and becomes fast again. Could this be related to the 512mb RAM limitation of Java, and the machine is swapping? Even trying to submit this post is incredibly slow and frustrating, it's taking me a minute just to click in the 'Tag's box. Any ideas? Ubuntu 10.10 x64 Intel Q9550 4GB RAM nVidia 8800GTS 320mb (w/prop drivers installed)

• Balancing Player vs. Monsters: Level-Up Curves

  I've written a fair number of games that have RPG-like "levelling up," where the player gains experience for killing monsters/enemies, and eventually, reaches a new level, where their stats increase. How do you find a balance between player growth, monster strength, and difficulty? The extreme ends of this spectrum are: Player levels up really fast and blows away monsters without much effort Monsters are incredibly strong and even at low levels, are very difficult to beat I've also tried a strange situation of making enemies relative to players, i.e. an enemy will always be at 50% or 100% or 150% of player stats (thus requiring the player to use other techniques instead of brute strength to succeeed). But where's the balance, and how do you find it? Edit: For example, I am expecting to hear things like: Balance high instead of balance low (200 HP and 20 str is easier to balance than 20 HP and 2 str) Look at easiest vs. hardest monsters, and see what you have in terms of a range

  Which languages have compilers able to emit plain standard C/C++ code? For a start: Haxe // uses Boehm GC Haskell (JHC) Haskell (old GHC) // -fvia-c, removed recently (emitted code is super ugly) Clay ATS Cython RPython (Shed Skin) // experimental RPython (PyPy) Python (Nuitka) // although author claims there are no speedups Common Lisp (ECL) COBOL (OpenCobol) Scheme (Chicken) APL // So far I've not found working implementation available for free download Ur/Web // GCC-specific output, and intended to be used only for web developments (included for completeness only) I'd like to build comprehensive up-to-date list but found only these ones so far. I've tested only Haxe and it works pretty well and quite fast. What about other ones? What is your expirience? How much ugly is generated code? Update. Any language chains (e.g. X - Scheme - C) will be perfectly OK as answer if its use is practical enough and suited for production use.

• Battery Power when running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in dual boot

  This is only a general question in order for me to get a better idea of my dual boot (windows 8 & Ubuntu) systems. I noticed that every time I run Ubuntu (which is becoming more often) the battery power gets consumed really fast. I am not performing any special tasks at the moment, just getting to know the system, for example, sound settings, watching videos, surfing the net and so on. When I do the same thing in Windows 8 the battery lives a considerable amount of time longer. Is this something to do with Ubuntu or is it because of the dual boot that I have going on? In other words, if I start running Ubuntu all by itself on my laptop, will it be more power consuming than Windows 8?

• System bar not showing when using the macbuntu theme

  i think i really need your assistance in this.I've installed ubuntu 10.10 and this mac theme and so far it works fine. This morning i upgraded to 11.04 and it also went well. i just realise some of the effects were gone. so i open compizconfig settings manager, i've tried to enable the destop cube and the expo and it prompted me of desabling somethings here and there. honestly i went fast couldn't undo what i've done and i realize the new application launcher and the system bar weren't showing properly, so i decided to restart my machine.After that 'bummer', nothing were like before.no system bar, no application launcher, not menu bar for any of my applications not even for the console. How i'm going to solve this one this time. thanks for reading this and specially for helping out.

• How can I lower my C# learning curve? [closed]

  I have been learning programming, mostly C# and .net stuff. And I have target to become a fulltime .NET developer. But I am feeling that learning Graph is very slow, I have been learning C# programming, doing some coding everyday, but how I can learn very fast and increase my skills rapidly? I know there should be a balance of coding and reading, as without reading I can't code and without coding I can't increase my skills. SO, I am requesting here suggesting from experts on how I bring more pace to my learning curve? I intend to give 4-6 hours daily for this and on weekends 10+ hours.

• Really weird situation with Swap that refuses to work

  So I decide to move my Swap partition to another HDD to make hibernation more fast, I create a partition with a liveUSB, do swapon, and then hibernate just disappears I go into the terminal, reactivate hibernate (so the button shows) for some reason the swap wasn't "on" so I do swapon again. Still not working. I go back to the terminal and edit the file with the UUID of the new swap partition. The partition shows as swap on gparted, it's on, the file has the right UUID, even the task manager shows a swap area of 10GB, and there is a hibernate button on the shutdown window. But it-wont-hibernate! What's going on?

  i'm a fan of ubuntu, but for now i want my installation to be perfect for my new laptop, its a series 5 of samsung with A6 processor. Somebody suggest what to do? or mention any problems related to this? Im more concern of the drivers to increase its performance because i am to develop an android app. I need "i dont know" to make this unit run as fast as possible without any dangerous tradeoffs. • Master Typing Productivity when Programming/SysAdmin [closed]

  I try to learn how to type fast and have managed to learn a lot. I am quite good at typing english text now. I do a lot of programmation though and if QWERTY seems fitted for english text, it doesn't seem fitted to type Ruby, Python, Javascript, Command Line or C++... I have read plenty of articles and if I respect their guidelines/tips, I am using a lot my right pinky specially to type []{}|\;:'"/?=+ enter delete. As you can see this symbols are the ones which are the most used when you are programming and we are using only one weak finger to reach them. Am I learning wrong? Is there is a way to be more productive? (I don't really want to switch to DVORAK) Have you some experiences/tips to share regarding this issue? • Blackscreen while installing 12.10

  everytime I try to install ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop i get a blackscreen after clicking on "install ubuntu", "try ubuntu without installation" or "ubuntu live" i tried it with nomodeset, nolapic and acpi=off too but nothing works. Sometimes i even get so a loading screen with nothing but "Ubuntu 12.10" and 4 dots in the middle, after that shortly a blackscreen appears with some text on it and then the complete blackscreen appears. As i tried with "no splash" instead of "quiet splash" it shows me something with graphic and determined in it but it was to fast away in a blackscreen to remember. Has someone any idea what I can do to get this working? Sry for my bad english i'm actually from germany. Sincerely Nalelvon

• ubuntu 12.10 slow application load upon restart

  new ubuntu user. after boot (boot is quite fast), opening applications such as firefox, libra, system settings, takes close to 10 seconds to open. after the application is loaded in RAM, the application opens fine. the system feels snappy, quick. when i have two FIREFOX open, unity is snappy in showing me the two windows side by side. but upon bootup, loading the application takes 10 seconds. there is not much hdd activity. fresh install. its the same for system settings and browsing system settings. when system settings is opened for the first time (10 second), and i click for example Color, it will take quite long to open the color settings. hardware: i3 4gb ram radeon 5770 250gb sata gigabyte h55m motherboard i am using ubuntu straight out of the box, no propriety drivers. 64 bit. i have reinstalled OS, and still the same.

  I'm recently having a problem in my Lubuntu deskptop: sound through the speakers doesn't seem to work. The funny thing is: it works when I plug in my earphones.   I have made some research and found that bullet, ode, newton and some others are open source physics engines that should be portable enough (but I have never tried to comile/use anyone of them on phones). I am writing my games for mobile platforms in C++, so the engine should be C or C++. I need a fast engine, since mobile platforms have limited resources. I need a free engine. A good design would be nice to have too. What engine is best suited for my task? What I really would like to hear from you is your direct experience. • Can't access my partitions after installing Ubuntu

  I installed Ubuntu 13.4 replace with win 8 after installation complete I can't access my partitions and receive a message like this : Error mounting /dev/sda5 at /media/manaf/01CD6C0800CEE670: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sda5" "/media/manaf/01CD6C0800CEE670"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda5': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state.   Which vendor provides better GPGPU. my requirements are confined to rendering utilising the GPU for BSDF building for e.g. Intel started providing Ivy Bridge chipset GPU, which are comparably fast to HD5960 cards. I'm not that against nvidia or amd. but I'm a fan of Intel. how it compares to nvidia in price and performance. if possible may I know, how all of them perform with OpenCL?? I'm not sure if it is right to ask it here. but I don't know where to ask.

• Why fgetc too slow?

  I've written a program that reads an whole file via fgetc: while ((c = fgetc(f)) != EOF) { ... } But the program is too slow. When I changed fgetc to fread, static unsigned char buf[4096]; while ((n = fread(buf, 1, sizeof(buf), f)) > 0) { ... } the program works about 10 times faster. Why? As I know, fgetc is a buffered function, so it should work as fast as the second version with explicit buffer, isn't it?
