• Circular reference error when outputting LINQ to SQL entities with relationships as JSON in an ASP.N

  Here's a design-view screenshot of my dbml-file. The relationships are auto-generated by foreign keys on the tables. When I try to serialize a query-result into JSON I get a circular reference error..: public ActionResult Index() { return Json(new DataContext().Ingredients.Select(i => i)); } But if I create my own collection of "bare" Ingredient objects, everything works fine..: public ActionResult Index() { return Json(new Entities.Ingredient[] { new Entities.Ingredient(), new Entities.Ingredient(), new Entities.Ingredient() }); } ... Also; serialization works fine if I remove the relationships on my tables. How can I serialize objects with relationships, without having to turn to a 3rd-party library? I am perfectly fine with just serializing the "top-level" objects of a given collection.. That is; without the relationships being serialized as well.

  Hi everybody, Pretty new to Entity Framework I must admit, but I simply cannot believe that there is no built-in solution for this problem. Let's say I create an EntityCommand: EntityCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand(); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmd.CommandText = commandText; And let's say the the commandText is something like this: SELECT sp.UserName, sp.Rights FROM EntityContext.Users as sp WHERE sp.UserName=@UserName Now it would be really neat if the Parameters collection of cmd could be automatically filled. The framework should obviously know the types etc. but I guess that's simply not how it works beneath. The problem is that the commandText is configurable on run-time, and I must show some GUI that asks for values of the parameters. Any idea on how this could be accomplished?   Hi all I am converting an ASP.Net 2.0 Project to compile for .Net Framework 3.5 and facing the following compiler error for assembly reference... InternalXmlHelper.vb(9,0): error BC30560: 'ExtensionAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices'. It appears that there are duplicate assembly references one from 2.0 and the other from 3.5 but i have double checked it and its not the issue.. I have also googled around...with no success.. I have sure that i am doing some tiny mistake in additiona or removal of references,,,Is there any special thing that needs to be checked or done when compiling asp.net 2.0 project under .Net Framework 3.5 ? Is it possible to create a generic class, which can instantiate as a class which holds string, or a IList or an IList?

• How do I create interface methods using .tlb types in VS C++?

  Background: The .TLB file contains interfaces written in language 'X'. I don't have .h, .idl, .tlh, or any other header files - just the .TLB file. Language 'X' does not export compatible .h, .idl, etc. I use the VS wizard to add an ATL simple object to my ATL project. I want to add a method to the interface of my simple ATL object that uses one of the .TLB defined types for a parameter. // Something like the following in the .idl file: interface ISomeInterface : IUnknown { HRESULT SomeMethod([in] ITypeFromTLB* aVal); // ITypeFromTLB declared in .TLB file. }; How can I do this? I'm hoping for a wizard, or a line in the .idl interface declaration that would bring in the .tlb information. midl's include (no .tlb), import (no tlb), and importlib (library only) don't seem to provide a solution (I need proxy/stub to be working, so I cannot put this inside the library declaration with the importlib command).   Hi guys - I'm working on a basic google applications based system. Like I earlier defined I'm building a simple ordering system and to each order placed I attach a file or document. I would like to be able to set it such that whatever file I upload is uploaded into google docs and I somehow am able to maintain a reference to that file from my own application i.e these files are concerned with such and such order. My application is google application based hopefully and I'm building it to be such for later on deployment into the cloud. How do I start on this and what do I need to do? Are there already working widgets I can use and apply or would I need to create my own customised solution for this? I'm working in Php MySQL.

• Can the behaviour of new HTML5 form types be overridden?

  I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible to override the default behaviour of browsers that support the new HTML input types such as type="email" and type="date"? I appreciate that I could test if a browser supports an input type and provide a fallback for those browsers that don't, but what I want to know is is there any way to prevent that default behaviour from happening in browsers that do support it? For instance, if in Opera I want to use the date input type, but I don't want Opera to display the native datepicker (i.e. I want to replace it with my own custom one) is that possible? Are there any DOM events triggered like onDatePickerShow that one can hook into? I don't believe that this is possible, but if anyone knows for sure one way or the other I would love to hear from you.

  I must be missing something very simple, but can't find the answer to this. I have a method named foo inside bar_controller. I simply want to call that method from inside a functional test. Here's my controller: class BarsController < ApplicationController def foo # does stuff end end Here's my functional test: class BarsControllerTest << ActionController::TestCase def "test foo" do # run foo foo # assert stuff end end When I run the test I get: NameError: undefined local variable or method `foo' for #<BarsControllerTest:0x102f2eab0> All the documentation on functional tests describe how to simulate a http get request to the bar_controller which then runs the method. But I'd just like to run the method without hitting it with an http get or post request. Is that possible? There must be a reference to the controller object inside the functional test, but I'm still learning ruby and rails so need some help.

• SSIS - How do I see/set the field types in a Recordset?

  I'm looking at an inherited SSIS package, and a stored procedure is sending records to a recordset called USER:NEW_RECORDS. It's of type Object, and the value is System.Object. It is then used for inputting that data to a SQL table. We're getting an error, because it seems that the numeric results of the stored procedure are being put in a DT_WSTR field, and then failing when it is then put into a decimal field in the database. Most of the records are working, but one, which happens to have a longer number of decimal digits, is failing. I want to see exactly what my SSIS recordset field types are, and probably change them, so I can force the data to be truncated properly and copied. Or, perhaps, I'm not even looking at this correctly. The data is put into the recordset using a SQL Task that executes the stored procedure.

  I have a Vector that holds a number of objects. My code uses a loop to add objects to the Vector depending on certain conditions. My question is, when I add the object to the Vector, is the original object reference added to the vector or does the Vector make a new instance of the object and adds that? For example, in the following code: private Vector numbersToCalculate; StringBuffer temp = new StringBuffer(); while(currentBuffer.length() > i) { //Some other code numbersToCalculate.add(temp); temp.setLength(0); //resets the temp StringBuffer } What I'm doing is adding the "temp" StringBuffer to the numbersToCalculate Vector.   Before start let me tell my experience: I am experienced with C#.NET, web services, XML part and few more. Reflection is something new to me, though I have read extensively on it and tried out some experimental code, but haven't made anything great using reflection I checked out many examples of how we can create Type at runtime and then which can be saved in an assembly (.dll) files. Of all the examples I have seen is about saving the created types in the .dll files instead of code file. Isn't there any way to create the code file out of reflection? I need to create code file since I want to distribute code instead of compiled assemblies. What I want to do is something like xsd.exe does, either spit out a .dll or the code file(in any language). Isn't there any way to create a code file, since most of the place I can find is AssemblyBuilder ab = System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.DefineDynamicAssembly(an, AssemblyBuilderAccess.Save); and then lastly ab.Save("QuoteOfTheDay.dll");

  When I add a reference to an assembly (living in the GAC) to web.config in an ASP.NET project, what does Visual Studio do? [This is related to an earlier question pertaining to BusinessObjects: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2379615/ ] When I add "CrystalDecisions.Enterprise" and "CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework" to the assemblies element in web.config, VS thinks long and hard about it, locking me out for a couple of minutes while it scrutinizes the newcomers. What is it doing during this time? I Googled this but came up empty. I can make some educated guesses (IntelliSense integration, perhaps?) but would ideally like to find some documentation describing exactly what's going on. Ultimately I'm hoping to learn why these BO references are making VS take several minutes to open my projects (I struck out on the SAP forums).

• How do I pass a reference type to Control.Invoke / display a form centered on the main form

  I'm on a thread other than the UI thread and need to display a modal form that's centered on the application's main form. What I usually do is use the width and height of the main form and the modal form to calculate the location, then use the PointToScreen method of the main form to get the location of the modal form. Since I'm on another thread I need to use Control.Invoke to call this method. I just can't figure out how to pass a parameter of type Point to Control.Invoke (params object[]). Value types and String works fine. Or, if someone can find a better way to display a form centered on the main form regardless of thread, that would be great. MessageBox seems to be able to do this (although not modally).

  Hi, Imagine the obvious model of employees and departments, where each employee must refer to a single department, and each department may have none to many employees. For Employee I have a pointer to Department, and I set its value to the address of the object of the relevant Department. When I try to save the Employee I get an error: 2010-04-07 10:05:22.491 CoreData2[1112:207] * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '* -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value (key: Department)' I tried, just for testing, to make the reference from Employee to Department optional, but I get the same result. I'm having my first steps in CoreData so please be as clear and simple as you can. Thanks, Tzur.
