• Bare-metal virtualisation for the desktop

  Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge about bare-metal virtualisation products? I'm interested in building a new desktop machine for home, I've been looking at the Intel Quad Core processors and I'd like to put 8GB of RAM in there, but, it got me thinking about making the most out of the available resources. I thought if I could get a good 64bit machine, put some bare-metal virtualisation on, then have a primary system, I'd also be able to bring up some extra virtualised systems as and when I needed. I know most of the bare metal systems are designed for the server market, but, is there anything out there that works well for a desktop. What are the caveats? I presume I won't be able to make the most out of any video cards I could buy, what about just getting a decent screen resolution, will this be a problem? I run a single 24" screen. What about DVD/CD writing, is this possible? I'd like to re-rip my CD collection, I was hoping the quad 64Bit goodness would help me out with the encoding. I currently use a Mac and couldn't go back to windows so that leaves Linux, I was thinking a primary OS of ubuntu. Does this make a difference? Thanks Andrew

• Can one really fry a monitor by setting the wrong HorizSync and VertRefresh?

  I've encountered this problem on several different systems with several different monitors: a monitor functions perfectly under Windows. I install a Linux and the max resolution is at some impossibly low value, mostly 640x480, changing it in Xorg.conf doesn't work. The X.org log file then shows that the driver cannot determine the correct refresh rate for the monitor, so it ignores everything in Xorg.conf and just loads in some default minimalistic mode. Googling the problem leads to an easy solution: set the HorizSync and VertRefresh in Xorg.conf, and everything works. The problem seems to be a common one, and I've seen dozens of results recommending the solution. Each of them contains the warning that you should use the value ranges provided with the monitor. Because if you don't, and your video card sends a signal with the wrong refresh rate, this can damage your monitor. Of course, you don't have a user manual for your monitor any more. If you are lucky to find one on the attic or on the net, it doesn't contain any information about the supported refresh rate. So you just type in the value suggested in the solution description, which varies wildly depending on your source, and cross your fingers. You restart, and... ... you've set the wrong values. So the monitor shows a short message like "input signal out of range", and you do a hard restart, repair your Xorg.conf in recovery mode, and everything is fine, including your monitor. So does this warning reflect a real possibility, or is it just a geeky urban legend? Or is it something which used to happen in the past, before manufacturers started protecting the monitors against it? Is it technically possible with every monitor technology, or is it maybe something which can only happen to a CRT? If you think that it's true, why? Have you ever witnessed a monitor die from the wrong refresh config, or have you read of it in a reputable source?

• CouchDB Errors: "undefined symbol: js_fgets" on Ubuntu 10.04

  Hello, ServerFault Community. I have been wrestling with this problem for weeks without resolution and was hoping that someone here might be able to help. As indicated above, this is in Ubuntu 10.04 (x86) using CouchDB 0.11.0. I have build and installed CouchDB 0.11.0 from source. Everything with the dependencies and with the CouchDB install itself 'goes off without a hitch' - no errors or complaints in the configure, make or install... CouchDB seems to be running 'fine'. I can access Futon without issue and utilize all CouchDB functionality found in Futon... Unfortunately, when I attempt to use any shows/views for an installed Couch App, I get the above js_fgets error before terminal (and the Couch log) fills up with TONS of JSON. Nothing ever renders in the browser, though Firebugs reports. I have used the official instructions (paying special attention to the 10.04 instructions) and have followed pretty much every Google thread that I can find on similar issues. I have chase SpiderMonkey (and Rhino) as well as Erlang as the culprit, but despite reinstalls and tests with these components, I still cannot get past this CouchDB issue on my system... Ideas? Pointers? Suggestions? Has anyone successfully installed and used CouchDB 0.11.0 on an Ubuntu 10.04 system to RUN APPLICATIONS? I have come across multiple individuals who immediately respond 'yes, I have it installed - it works great' only to have them realize in the end (as I did) that just because Futon thinks things are working, doesn't mean CouchDB is properly handling ALL requests. • Thin client - cloud machine - to run via iPad, iPhone, most Androids etc

  I'm tired of having a laptop macbook that breaks down or having files that I need to sync via dropbox etc all the time via the machines to different OS installations. It sucks. I want a thin client where I can login on any machine - my iPhone, PC desktop, iPad etc to one running machine. I would like to replace a modernly powerful desktop iMac with a thin client running via my iPad. I will connect the iPad with a keyboard/mouse too so you get the idea. But I want to be able to use some of the Android phones as well (I guess most Android phones today has a good enough performance/resolution etc to run a thin client). Of course it has to be able to have input/output in sound. Printing can be solved by PDF/emailing etc - so no direct communication to the printer ports to USB etc is necessary. Is there such a service today? It should cost somewhere under something like $40/ month. I will run stuff like CPU heavy duty ableton for music production, xCode for making iOS apps, some games etc. And on the thin client also run virtual machines. VM of Ubuntu and Windows.

• Widespread misinterpretation of DNS rules in resolving wildcards

See my own answer below] Here is a snippet of my zone file *.example.com. 300 IN CNAME proxy.herokuapp.com. foo.example.com. 300 IN A 111.111.111.111 If I dig @8.8.8.8 foo.example.com I get the answer I expect: ;; ANSWER SECTION: foo.example.com. 30 IN A 111.111.111.111 The same is true of all other public DNS servers I've tried. However, when I try to set up a check with Pingdom to a URL on foo.example.com it instead sends the traffic to my Heroku app referenced by the *.example.com RR. The same is true of checks set up on New Relic, Errplane and traffic generated by the Heroku app itself. So on the one side, all public DNS servers interpret the zone file one way. Yet four service providers all interpret it a different way, one that differs to the standard suggested by RFC 4592. My question is: are these reputable, mature service providers all wrong? Or is it little me?

  I'm looking for a new laptop. I saw few: i) HP ProBook 4321s ii) HP ProBook 6440b iii)Dell Latitude E6410 i found these laptops are still very new..is it? not much comments about them. can anyone help? i doubt how their graphic cards perform compare to each other? ProBook 4321s- Radeon HD4350 ProBook 6440b- Radeon HD4550 Latitude E6410- NVS 3100M most of the time i'll running 3D CAD software, C++ programing...i saw my friend's laptop with radeon HD4350. it's perfectly fulfilling my demand. but i wonder how the other two are? Another thing i doubt is the screen resolution..my current laptop is 1280x800, and i found it comfortable to use. But these two HP only offer 1366x768..will it make any large different? Lastly, is there anyway to estimate how their power consumption is from the spec sheet? well, i would prefer one with longer battery usage time. my current laptop is suck...only last 1 hour even when it's still new..i'm not going to get another like this anymore. • Looking for recommendations on OCR problem - tabular numeric data

  I have 20 pages of experiment measurement data which I need to digitalize. The results are in tabular form, scanned in 600 dpi resolution, and as far as scans go, they came up pretty clean and readable. For an example of how it looks see here (but beware: it is a rather big scan; about 5Mb; no problem for any broadband connection, but dialups should approach with caution!) ... and I need it finished by sunday afternoon (:-o) <-- smiley in a state of panic (then why did't you start sooner?)... yea, yeah ... I know ... but, it came up late, and I wasn't thinking I was gonna need this data also. So, I'm looking for recommendations. I haven't much experience with OCR programs, save scanning a page or two of pure text, but just to mention, I haven't the wish also to test out every OCR program out there. So this isn't a "name your OCR favourite". What I'm looking is advice from someone who's done something like that, and his/hers experience on what would be the best way to undertake. I need the data in txt form but since it will have to be checked (by drawing it, and just simply watching whether some points "jump out") I'll probably be entering it in Excel at first.

• Best photo management software?

  Hi, What I would like is a single piece of software (or a smart combination of tools) that allow me to manage my photos in a better way than what I've found so far. 1. Tags Primarily I need a way of tagging the images. So I can manually tag photos the same way we tag questions here at SO/SF/SU. I want this software to place a lot of the tags automagically (obvious things like date and resolution). 2. Face recognition What I would really like is that this software has a feature that it can recognize faces in images and places tags with the name of the person. So far I've only heard of one online photo system that can do that (Picasa) and not yet of any offline tool. 3. Version database I must have some way of having a central GIT/SVN/... that contains all images. I have had a harddrive corruption a few years ago and it took me a long time to figure out which images had been damaged. I always want to be able to go back to what the camera produced. 4. Website I want to be able to generate a website (few 'tag' specific websites) based on the actual content. 5. Easy bulk uploading Many photo tools have a one on one uploading option. I prefer simply 'throwing' my images on a file server under Linux (Samba) and let the system automagically integrate, tag, recognize, etc. all images. Ok, I know these are a bit much. Perhaps you guy's have some suggestions about existing tools that can make this possible. Or even a complete system that does this. EDIT: To clarify on the OS. • Is there a way to avoid Wacom Control Panel to stop showing in certain cases ?

  This is the problem: Suddenly, you double click on desktop wacom tablet settings icon, and it wont show the dialog. It appears to be loaded as it's shown down in the windows taskbar. I suspect is caused by change of resolution or some setting, maybe suddenly it sets the origin of the panel dialog at some 3000 thosand pixels to the right or something. I have digged that wacom_tablet.dat file to see if I fix it changing some value there, but looks like a log, a history, more than a ini for settings... And anyway does not solve it. My solution is having always a very complete settings file done and backed up to restore (with wacom utility for this, which in previous driver versions did not exist) when this happens, but is counter productive: You change the settings even per each project(and software) needs. I have seen it happenning with Cintiq 12", intuos4 A6, Graphires, Intuos 1. Is just me, doing something weird every time? I doubt it, is normal use, I am amazed that seems no one else had this prob(or nobody asked), happens often with typical use. Maybe is because am setting a shortcut in the desktop? Weird as it works perfect till some random moment... (Have digged Wacom's forums and FAQs, then here, but nothing related to it... Neither in "related questions".) The thing happens in Win XP, 7, etc. Done so during years in my experience, and several times at work, which is worse.

• Building a PC for Work and play? [closed]

  Ok, Its been a long time since I build my own PC so I'm looking to get back into it again and build a new one. First off budget is about €800 excluding the monitor and windows 7 licence and mouse. (just bought a new g500) I plan on using my computer for work, lots of applications open at once but none particularly excessive (photoshop being the most demanding, mostly coding tools) I also use it for some gaming, e.g. COD, Starcraft etc. One thing I do want to do eventually is get a really good monitor with hight resolution and maybe 27" so the graphics card needs to be able to make best use of that. So a few questions 1) Is the bottle neck in performance mostly still the harddrives? 2) Aren't most processors e.g. i5 etc even i3 so far a head of other bottlenecks it makes litte difference the higher you go. Isn't the Graphics card dealing with heavy graphics so what really slows because of a slow CPU? So from this my thinking is to get a SSD drive as my primary drive for OS etc and have loads of memory e.g. 6-8GB and a decent mid level graphics card? It doesn't seem at my level worth spending much on CPU and any other parts really. I basic parts off the top of my head Case, Motherboard CPU SSD Drive SATA Drive Power Supply Memory Cooling (fan?) Graphics Card Network Card Keyboard DVD drive Mouse Windows Monitor Am I missing anything? Any helpful tips or general education much appreciated. Thanks, Derek

• NVIDIA GeForce GT750M drivers for Ubuntu 13.10 on iMac

  I have just got a new iMac 14.3 with 21.5' display. It has Intel i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT750M graphics card with GPU (Device ID: 0x00fe9). I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 on it (dual boot with refit). Everything works fine apart from graphics. It is clear that graphics' not accelerated, and there are no drivers suggested in the "Additional drivers" section. I have tried to Install nvidia drivers from the repository. Download nvidia drivers and install them manually. Follow instructions here. Follow instructions here. Follow instructions here. Install bumblebee. Play around with xorg.conf file. Blacklist nouveau. As you may guess, nothing worked. The weirdest thing is, that when I boot from a LiveCD, it picks up screen resolution and all the rest correctly, though when I install the system to my Hard Drive it clearly does not have proper drivers. Does anyone have any suggestion what to do?

• Triple-monitor set-up (2 unique, 1 cloned): Can a VGA splitter be used on one output of a dual-head

  Background: I'm currently researching hardware components for some kind of information terminal we're building. This application of ours makes use of three output screens: (1) A touch screen where all user input is made; (2) A regular LCD monitor where the requested information is being displayed; and (3) A projector which displays exactly the same signal as screen (2) does. (All screens will run at the same resolution of 1024x768 btw.) Now I figured that using a dual-head video card would be sufficient, let's say a Matrox P690 low-profile PCI card. This would involve having a Y cable connected to the graphics card itself, then two DVI-to-VGA adapters at each end of the Y cable, and then having a VGA splitter on one of the VGA outputs. The following shows the setup in question: 0--1---------2-> VGA (DSUB-15) \ \ ----2-3---------> VGA (DSUB-15) \ \ -----------------> VGA (DSUB-15) 0: graphics card (LFH60 jack) 1: LFH60 to DVI-I dual monitor Y cable 2: DVI-to-VGA adapters 3: VGA splitter cable Question(s): Will this work? I'm particularly concerned about the following points: Can a low-profile PCI video card output a signal which is strong enough for three monitors (even if it's a dual-head card)? Does the combination of so many adapters and splitter cables work? (The LFH-to-DVI cable comes with the video card) Will the VGA splitter cable degrade the signal on the output screen & projector significantly? (If so, would a USB-powered splitter cable remedy this problem?) I can't possibly expect anyone to answer all those questions, but any input is appreciated.

• Windows XP over two monitors, but one of them switches off at boot... how to fix? How to switch bac

  When booting into XP (x64, Athlon II X2 245, 4GB RAM), my main monitor (got two 19" TFTs hooked up, two gfx cards, a 4650 (1GB, the primary monitor's on this) and a 4350 (512MB)) switches off. Logging in blind (cursor down key, typing password) gets me one screen, the secondary. Booted correctly until about two days ago. No clue what's the cause, last change was (if I don't overlook something) installing the ATI 9-12 hotfix. And booting into Windows 7, after returning from 7, it was like this. For some weird reason, I cannot start Catalyst Control Center (I right-click desktop, choose the CCC entry, the pointer changes to hourglass for a half-second... and nothing. Likewise with "Properties"... I think, as all windows open on the primary (off) screen, and no entry appears in the task bar for Properties) Completely stumped. Windows 7, same setup, works w/o a hitch. The primary monitor appears to run in some unknown, but pretty low, resolution, as the mouse pointer only moves onto it at about half-height. But, w/o CCC or display properties, I cannot check. And, obviously, not change anything. Hope this was not too long-winded. And I'm sure I still forgot essential stuff. :P

• Performance experiences for running Windows 7 on a Thin-Client?

  Has anyone else tried installing Windows 7 on thin-client hardware? I'd be very interested to hear about other people's experiences and what sort of hardware tweaks they had to do to get it to work. (Yes, I realize this is completely unsupported.. half the fun of playing with machines and beta/RC versions is trying out unsupported scenarios. :) ) I managed to get Windows 7 installed on a modified Wyse 9450 Thin-Client and while the performance isn't great, it is usable, particularly as an RDP workstation. Before installing 7, I added another 256Mb of ram (512 total), a 60G laptop hard-drive and a PCI videocard to the 9450 (this was in order to increase the supported screen resolution). I basically did this in order to see whether or not it was possible to get 7 installed on such minimal hardware, and see what the performance would be. For a 550Mhz processor, I was reasonably impressed. I've been using the machine for RDP for the last couple of days and it actually seems slightly snappier than the default Windows XP embedded install (although this is more likely the result of the extra hardware). I'll be running some more tests later on as I'm curious to see particularl whether the streaming video performance will improve. I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences getting 7 to work on extremely low-powered hardware. Particularly any sort of tweaks that you've discovered in order to increase performance..

• Free/opensource application for charting stock prices?

  I am looking for a free or FOSS software application for SIMPLY charting stock prices. I am not interested in any of the other nonsense typically bundled with such packages (technical analysis, back testing, tracking etc, etc). All I want to do is the following: Import file from CSV and plot on the chart Ability to scroll the chart left/right (zoom feature would be nice to) Ability to draw straight line (between 2 points) on the plot Ability to plot the graph for different resolutions (for e.g weekly, monthly - or some other custom resolution that I want) print the displayed graph (I can always use screen capture if printing is too much to ask) Thats all I want to do. I am not interested in anything else. I would have thought I could have found something by now. I would have written my own tool (I still will do that at a later stage), but I am a bit short of time at the moment, so I just want something that will do all of the above. Can anyone recommend a package. Last but not the least, I am running on Linux (and would prefer to do so - BUT if I have to, I can run on ahem - you know, Windows)

• Cannot access server shares over VPN

  I've set up a single hosted server to use as a development environment for a web-based application. The web app is served up fine on port 80, however I'm struggling to get my VPN to behave how I'd expect so the developers don't have the access they require. The VPN connects fine and I can access the back-end database (SQL Server) which resides on the server with the client tools from the laptops. However they cannot access any shared folders. The server's local IP address is 10.x.x.x, and I've assigned a static IP address pool to RRAS (of 192.168.100.1 - 20). The clients pick up a valid IP Address (i.e. 192.168.100.9) when they connect. There is no name resolution setup, DNS or WINS. When connected via VPN the clients can ping the server (192.168.100.1) by IP Address, but cannot map a drive to a shared folder (net use * \\192.168.100.1\xxxxx) - I get 'System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found.' I don't understand why I can ping by the ip, but not map by it. Some details: Server OS is Windows 2008 (Datacenter) VPN is SSTP using RRAS Clients are all Windows 7 I've tried temporarily disabling the firewalls So, why can we not access the file system when everything else (ping, RDP, SQL Server clients tools) works? • How can I wipe my iPod classic and fix any bad sectors on the hard drive without killing it?

  My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video - any ideas as to how I can fix it? My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated? Update I have eliminated problems with the files, PC or iTunes as they sync fine to other iPods. I have also eliminated the cable by trying different cables which work with other iPods. What I'd really like to know is if there is any way to more fundamentally wipe the iPod safely, attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive and then start from scratch. Anyone ever managed this?

• How can I know if a replacement display is compatible with my laptop?

  I have an Acer Aspire 4810TZ from 2010 which I truly love - it's a 3 year old notebook that still carries on for about 5 to 6h straight off the battery. I've also invested in it with an SSD and extra RAM and it's fine for my use right now. I'd really rather not just dump it. Now... its screen is dead and I'm looking for replacement parts, but it turns out to be a kind of expensive display - AUO B140XW02 14" LED. US$ 125 was the cheapest I found here (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The official dealer sells them for US$ 175. I'm aware of How do I know if a LCD is compatible with my Laptop? and Can I replace a laptop screen with one of a different resolution? but the answers don't really help me in this case. Also Replacing an LCD screen in a laptop gives me a hint but I'm completely dumb at hardware so this is why i'm asking: Is it possible to buy an LCD or a lower grade LED screen with the same connectors? What characteristics should I look for to find out if a certain display is compatible?

  We are running a CentOS 5.6 system, and want to install php53 with php-mcrypt. However, this introduces a dependency conflict between php-common & php53-common.   < rant So who decided that VGA cables should be the same gender connector at both ends? I just spent an hour trying to fix a server that would apparently boot but wouldn't display any post messages - I needed to change some bios settings. The monitor gives me a helpful error message - "unable to display this resolution". Wondering how it can't show simple VGA res, I reset the bios, when that doesn't work I remove the BIOS battery. The system is in a rack with a keyboard and monitor mounted 6ft away - with the cable running through the normal waist thick rats nest of wiring of wiring. The monitor worked with another system, so it and the VGA cable are good, I brought in another monitor and tried that - still nothing. Eventually I ripped the rack apart to discover that the other end of the VGA connector I was trying to plug into the server was actually plugged into another server box ! And the second monitor I was testing was plugged into the first monitor. An error message like - "I'm actualy plugged into another monitor stupid" - would be useful. So would having a connector with a male end and a female end. < end rant - thank you

• Guest can't access host windows network share

  HI folks, I've recently run into a strange problem after upgrading to VMware player 3. Certain virtual machines (currently an XP and a VIsta VM) seem to have lost the ability to access the host (XP) network shared folders (SMB). Both VM machines are bridged networking, firewall is up. Host firewall is up. Host and guests use DHCP. All OS are workgroup connected. The Vista VM I am not completely sure, but the XP VM did have access to the host's network shared folders after the player upgrade. Then today it wouldn't work, network path can't be found. Now here's the wierd part. The host's network shared folders can be accessed properly by other PC's on the network (and as far as I know, no settings have been changed). The host is pingable from the guests, and name resolution works. The guests can access network shares on other PC's in the network, and access the internet. My Network Places shows the host PC, but double clicking on it takes a long time before it finally times out with an error. Doing a wireshark packet capture, the guest is sending out the protocol negotiation, and the host is sending a response, but after that the guest behaves like it didn't receive anything and is doing TCP retransmissions. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong? Yes I know I can drag and drop files or setup the special VMware shared folders, but I want to access the host just like any other network accessible shared folder. It just seems really odd when any other computer works, just not between the guest and host.

  My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated?

• How to get nginx to pass HTTP_AUTHORIZATION header to Apache

  Am using Nginx as a reverse proxy to an Apache server that uses HTTP Auth. For some reason, I can't get the HTTP_AUTHORIZATION header through to Apache, it seems to get filtered out by Nginx. Hence, no requests can authenticate. Note that the Basic auth is dynamic so I don't want to hard-code it in my nginx config. Update - turns out the problem was something I had overlooked in my original question: mod_wsgi. The site in question here is a Django site, and it turns out that Apache does get the auth variables passed through, however mod_wsgi filters them out.
