Monitor Processes' Memory Usage

We have an IBM P series box running AIX 5.3. This is our application server, whereby our J2EE application is running in Oracle's Applications Server (version 10g r2). At around 11pm till the next day 7am, we have shell scripts running, which executes Java class programs. Recently, this server has been experiencing some high memory usage, which caused some of the Java class programs throwing "Out of memory" exception . We normally use NMON to monitor the server's resources, such as CPU, I/O, memory, etc. But because of this OOM issue, we would like to know throughout the day, what are the processes which are running and how much memory each process consumed. NMON is not able to show this. Even with the "-T" parameter, it only shows the top processes and not all. Is there any thing we can use to monitor all the processes' memory?

What is it? And what causes it? Is it only for uncorrectable DIMM Errors(Troubleshooting DIMM errors)? When an UCE occurs, the memory controller causes an immediate reboot of the system. During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case. Linux compilers for C/C++ on AMD "Bulldozer" CPUs like the Interlagos [closed]

I am looking for a Linux compiler for C/C++ code that supports AMDs new "Bulldozer" architecture and produces efficient binaries for the Interlagos series Opterons. This seems to be a bit difficult because of the peculiarities of the Bulldozer microarchitecture. While AMD has a whitepaper with some details, I would like to see some independent analyses. The relevant paper from HeCToR focuses mostly on job placement and scheduling, which is an area we already investigate. So, who can recommend a good compiler comparison for Bulldozers running Linux? Does anyone have well-described benchmarks?

Linux: How to break a large file into smaller files?

I have a giant file (20 gigs) sitting on my source machine and I need to transfer it to my target machine. For the purposes of this question, let's assume that I do not have network connectivity between the two machines. I need to break this file into a series of smaller files, write the smaller files to DVD(s), then re-assemble everything on the target machine. Both source and destination machines are Linux boxes. Is there a way to accomplish this using tar? I have a feeling that I need to use the --multi-volume parameter. What are my options? I need to be able to specify the size of the volume files, in order to make sure that each one will fit onto a single DVD. Thanks!

Building new GIS Workstation - is it worth upgrading to a workstation GPU?

We are currently building a machine from scratch to act as a GIS workstation. The primary software used is ESRI's ArcGIS and we are mainly working with vector data using raster data only for contextual background imagery. In the past I have built a GIS machine and used a consumer grade gaming GPU (Nvidia 9800GT) and found it to perform fine. However, I have always wondered if I would have been better off equipping it with a workstation GPU such as a Quadro series. Would a workstation GPU make a noticeable difference doing 2D GIS operations or should I save money on the build and equip it with another 9800GT?

Hi, We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration fo the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 straems. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise no difference, even worst. So, what is the pupuse of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage? Radeon 4670 Card Has 2 DVI Outs But Only Works When One is used in Win7 x64

I have an ATI XFX Radeon 4670 1GB video card in a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 setup. If I only use one monitor, all is well. If I plug in a second DVI cable to the card, both monitors go dark. I can get one or the other to display, but only when it is the only one plugged into the card. I'm really hoping for a dual-monitor setup here as that was the point of the card. I'm using ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series video drivers dated 11/24/09 (8.681.0.0) which are the latest from their site and are supposed to work with Vista or Win7 x64. When the computer boots with both displays connected, both monitors display the inital bios and boot screens. The Win7 splash screen also displays, but by the time it goes to the login screen, one monitor is offline.

Dell Studio XPS 16 Runs Hot

Specs: 1920x1080 i7 1.6 GHz quad core 6GB RAM 1GB ATI Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive Love this laptop for many reasons, but it constantly runs hot (CPU is low 70s with basic tasks and often 80+ is not uncommon) and I'm finding it too much to deal with. The laptop feels very hot (almost too hot for a lap) and often gets so hot that the OS slows down or freezes altogether. I've tried cleaning it out and even replacing the thermal paste. I often use an external cooler, but it only helps 3-5 degrees and it's a pain to have to use. I've come to the conclusion that it just runs hot. I have two questions: What is to blame? The i7 processor, the gfx card, or is it just that this laptop has poor cooling? Does the Dell XPS 15 run cooler? I'm looking at replacing my current laptop, but I don't want to run into the same problem.

How long do managed gigabit ethernet switches take to boot up?

One critical drawback that I have found in researching managed-switches, and one that I have some past experience with is that anything with "lots" of firmware is going to have lots of issues associated with that firmware. We are in the middle of researching rackmount gigabit switches (48 port). It looks like for 48 ports, our only choice is managed switches (Dell, Cisco/Linksys,HP, etc). What I want to know, that I can not find out much about is the boot-time for various managed switches. If you own one, can you please answer with the model number, and the cold boot time in seconds. I have read online that Linksys (now Cisco) SRW series sometimes take almost 5 minutes before they are fully booted up, and that is an unacceptable cost for us. I particularly want to know about Dell PowerConnect managed switch bootup time (model 3548 and 5448), and would like to confirm the 5-minute boot time on the SRW2048 or similar model, and any HP ProCurve boot up times. The composite of all those figures ought to form an interesting overall performance picture.

Output to TV only works if monitor is plugged in

I am trying to use my TV as the sole output for a computer. The computer has a graphics card with 2 outputs - one RGB and one DVI. I have the RGB output going to the TV, and when the DVI output is connected to a monitor, display works fine on both the monitor and the TV. If I turn off the monitor, or even turn off power to the monitor, the TV continues to display the desktop. If I unplug the DVI cable from the monitor (remember that the monitor doesn't have any power at this point), the TV stops presenting the desktop and displays a "Not Accepted" message. When starting up the computer, the TV displays fine, but stops working at the "press ctrl-alt-delete" screen unless the monitor is connected. How can I make the TV show the display without the monitor? The TV is an LG RT-42PZ45V. The graphics card is an ATI Radeon series HD4350 512MB GDDR2. The computer is running Windows Server 2008 r2.

Software to convert Powerpoint slideshows to images?

Is there any software out there that is able to convert a Powerpoint slideshow (either in 2003 or 2007 format) to a series of JPG or PNG images? I'm looking for either standalone software that can do this from the command line, or ideally a .NET library that can be utilized to do the conversion (not holding my breath on that last one). I know that Powerpoint itself can do the conversion, but it's something I'm looking to integrate into a web application that can't rely on PowerPoint itself being installed. I've done some searches out there, but all I can really find are either instructions on how to do this in Powerpoint, or software itself that looks like its from a very shady source.

Linux USB/Serial port won't create a tty device in /dev

I am connecting a USB to serial driver port to my system and I get about halfway to where I need to go. When it is plugged in dmesg indicates: <6>usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using sl811-hcd and address 4 <6>usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice and lsusb Bus 2 Device 4: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port Bus 2 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 Bus 1 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 I get a series of usbdev2.4 (usbdev2.4, usbdev2.4_ep00, etc) devices in dev but no ttyUSB0 or anything that I can open with minicom. What kind of SATA interface is on a Thinkpad X120E?

I recently ordered a Thinkpad X120E with an AMD Fusion (Zacate) chipset. I am eyeballing an SSD for it, however newer SSDs are coming out with 6Gbps SATA interfaces. I doubt such a cheap laptop has 6Gbps SATA, but I'm debating waiting the a bit longer until the Intel 510 series come out, if anything to future proof myself by putting it in this laptop and then later on when I do upgrade to a laptop with 6Gbps SATA I'll be good to go. The hardware manual mentions that the motherboard is for a "AMD Fusion E-350" but the specifications of each hardware part isn't part of the manual. Does anyone have any information on the kind of SATA controllers in Fusion laptops so I can make a better purchasing decision?

ATI Catalyst setting to stretch Windows XP start bar across both displays

I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me? Is it possible to modify a color scheme and windows decorations in Xfce4?

just testing PCLinuxOS Phoenix XFCE Edition 2011-07 which I would like to install on my grandpa's PC instead older PCLOS 2009 with KDE3 (which is almost impossible to upgrade). The PC is relatively older one (Sempron 2200+ CPU, MSI K7N2GM2 board with integrated GeForce 440MX series graphics, 1GB RAM and 80GB IDE HDD) and I thought that it is too weak for KDE4. I already used Xfce in the past (Sam Linux 2006 and 2007), but in new Xfce4 I am not able to somehow change the windows color scheme and the windows decorations - the settings manager offers me switching between preinstalled themes but it is possible to modify them with some GUI?

Supermicro MBD-X9DRL-IF-B and 8 X Hynix 4Gb DDR3 ECC dont boot

I have a custom build server with 2 Xeon E5-2609 and Supermicro MBD-X9DRL-IF-B. Right now the server has 4X Hynix 4Gb 2Rx8 PC3L-10600R-9-10-B0 HMT351R7BFR8A. and its working great. We baught another 4 from the same series of memory, when we installed all the ram (4 sticks already installed and we added 4 new sticks) the server didn't boot. When we replaced the current memory with the new memory - the server did boot. Right now we are in a problem because we need to extend this server ram but the motherboard don't run with 8X4Gb. Any ideas why? I have attached a picture with one of the current memory stick and one of the new memory stick. Thanks in advence.

We having RHEL5 linux server with few windows xp clients. We providing web development in php. Now my developers as for common local php server for keep their projects in same place. Currently proxy server and samba sharing are running in RHEL5 server. I installed httpd,php,MySQL in server. And i would like to configure virtual hosting too for LAN. What i want do for it ? In server we have 2 Ethernet ports, 1 for local connection and another one for Internet. Internet provided by ADSL provider. (192.168.0.0 series for ADSL modem connection and 10.1.1.0 for LAN connection. If i want to use virtual hosting , am i want to setup local DNS server ? My requirements are, setup php with mySQL server for Local clients with multiple hosting , without disturbing proxy and samba. Help me to solve it.

Best FFDShow settings for upscaling SD content to 1080p HD?

Hi there, I'm running Windows Media Center 7 with ffdshow-tryouts for the decoding of many of the popular video formats. It works great. I've now upgraded my television from SD to 1080p HD and, naturally, I've still got a large number of existing MP4/XviD/DivX items of content which is in SD. I'd like, therefore, to modify the settings of ffdshow so that they are upscaled to 1080p as best as possible. I appreciate that they won't be as good as their HD equivalent - but on the flip side, I'm pretty certain I can do more than just resizing the picture to get the best possible output. Can anyone recommend the best settings in ffdshow to do this? For example, should I apply a sharpen mask? Or Noise Reduction? Or Deinterlace? Alternatively, would it be better to keep them at their current resolution and let the TV (Samsung Series 5 LE32C580) do the upscaling? Thanks.

Firefox: tabs containing a single image sometimes show generic icon instead of thumbnail

My version of Firefox is 3.5.9, but I've had this issue since single-image tabs started showing a thumbnail of the contained image. Typically, a tab containing a single image will use a thumbnail of the image as the icon before the tab title. Sometimes, though, this icon will be the generic “shaded sphere on blank page” (or perhaps whatever your theme defaults to). I'm guessing this happens whenever height or width is larger than 1024, but I seem to recall (perhaps erroneously) exceptions to this rule. Anyway, hopefully someone will know the definite answer to: Why does this happen? Accessing English language reviews of iPhone apps

Hi! I'm on the creator side of iPhone apps so I'd like to read some of the reviews for our apps. However, because I'm German and don't have a US bank account, iTunes only shows me the German reviews. How can I see the US ones too? Trying to switch the account in my iTunes, Apple warns me that I need a US bank account, and that I have ongoing TV series subscriptions that can't be cancelled yet... and only offers a Cancel button.
