• Why should main() be short?

  I've been programming for over 9 years, and according to the advice of my first programming teacher, I always keep my main() function extremely short. At first I had no idea why. I just obeyed without understanding, much to the delight of my professors. After gaining experience, I realized that if I designed my code correctly, having a short main() function just sortof happened. Writing modularized code and following the single responsibility principle allowed my code to be designed in "bunches", and main() served as nothing more than a catalyst to get the program running. It seems as though Python did the "Intro to Programming 101" trick and just moved all of main()'s code to a different function called it something very similar to "main". Here's my question: Is this code terribly written, or are there other reasons reasons to have a short main function? As it stands right now, I see absolutely no difference between doing this and just moving the code in Py_Main() back into main(). Am I wrong in thinking this?

• Why should main() be short?

  I've been programming for over 9 years, and according to the advice of my first programming teacher, I always keep my main() function extremely short. At first I had no idea why. I just obeyed without understanding, much to the delight of my professors. After gaining experience, I realized that if I designed my code correctly, having a short main() function just sortof happened. Writing modularized code and following the single responsibility principle allowed my code to be designed in "bunches", and main() served as nothing more than a catalyst to get the program running. It seems as though Python did the "Intro to Programming 101" trick and just moved all of main()'s code to a different function called it something very similar to "main". Here's my question: Is this code terribly written, or are there other reasons to have a short main function? As it stands right now, I see absolutely no difference between doing this and just moving the code in Py_Main() back into main(). Am I wrong in thinking this?

• Pecl complies .so extensions for OSX built-in PHP and not MAMP

  I've installed the sphinx binaries and libraries and am now trying to install the PECL sphinx module. My system is running OS X 10.6 with MAMP 1.8.2 installed. I try to install sphinx using the following command: sudo pecl install sphinx The PECL command outputs the following: running: phpize Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20090626 Zend Module Api No: 20090626 Zend Extension Api No: 220090626 The versions above don't match the versions listed when doing a phpinfo(). It seems that PECL is trying to complie against the built-in version of PHP. If I ignore the errors and continue the it will successfully compile and place the sphinx.so file in: /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/sphinx.so when in fact it should be: /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/ I've tried copying the sphinx.so file to the MAMP extensions dir but when I restart apache PHP displays the following warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/sphinx.so I think this is because MAMP is 32bit and the built-in PHP is 64bit so PECL complies for 64bit. I might be completely wrong but I did read this when I goggled on the topic. Does anyone know how to get PECL to map to the MAMP version of PHP instead of the built-in version?

• How to run multiple instances of Tor?

  I'm trying to set up a special proxy server (running Windows). It will have several instances of Privoxy and Tor running and my app will choose which Privoxy instance to send HTTP requests to depending on the load. Privoxy will then forward them to Tor. I'm using srvany.exe to create the services. At the moment I'm running 3 Privoxy and 3 Tor services (I copied the binaries to different folders). Each Privoxy service is listening to its own port (8118, 8119, 8120). I can see them listening in a port scanner. This is the application path (for srvany in registry) for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Privoxy 01\privoxy.exe --service I've also configured the Tor services to listen to different ports (9050, 9052, 9054). This is the application path for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\tor.exe -f "C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\torrc" The problem is, when I start the Tor services, only the first service I start is listening to its port. The others aren't listening. They listen if I run them separately. Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I make all 3 services listen on their assigned ports? Not the best solution, but it works.

• Sshfs is not working..

  Hi, When I run sshpass -p 'mypass' sshfs 'root'@'68.19.40.16':/ '/dir' -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no,debug It successfully mounts but it runs on foreground. When I run without 'debug' parameter, it doesn't mount at all. Server is ubuntu 8.04 Any ideas why? UPDATE: When I run the command as ROOT it does mount. • ssh keys rejected each day

  I've had OpenSSH server running on my debian server for a couple weeks and all of a sudden now when I go to login the next day it rejects my ssh key and I have to manually add a new one each time. Not only that but I have the "tunneling with clear-text passwords" option enabled and the non-root (login with root is disabled) account for that is rejected too. I'm at a loss why this is happening and I can't find any ssh options that would explain it. --update-- I just changed debug level to DEBUG. • Error during configuring kerberos5 using macports

• Monit - script not being executed as expected

  I'm working on a Windows 7 machine, having a VM for Ubuntu (image disk: 12.04-desktop-i386.iso). On the VM I installed Monit 5.3.2, and configured some processes and applications. So I created a script to run my application. This application should display some content on the screen (Im basically displaying two images, using Feh). The thing is: if I call my script through the command line, it runs ok, and display the images. But if I run through monit, it seems to be running ok, but it doesn't display the images.In the case I try to debug it (remote debug), then I can see the images. So I was supposing this could be some kind of configuration, but didn't find out what (even using the option -I wou'ldn't work). • Apache2 Segmentation fault with wsgi_module

  Apache 2.2.3 is running as an existing web server under RHEL 5. Attempting to set up Trac using wsgi_module. RHEL 5 ships with python 2.4, so in order to use the current version of Trac (1.0) I needed to install it with easy_install-2.6. Trac works with the default mod_python, however users strongly encourage not using this module as it is officially dead. Using RHEL's package manager, I downloaded/installed python26-mod_wsgi.so. I backed up the httpd.conf, then made the following additions: LoadModule wsgi_module modules/python26-mod_wsgi.so #...# WSGIScriptAlias /trac /www/virtualhosts/trac/deploy/cgi-bin/trac.wsgi <Directory /www/virtualhosts/trac/deploy/cgi-bin> WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL} Order deny,allow Allow from all </Directory> Next I moved trac.conf to trac.conf.bak (contains mod_python calls). I restored my backup copy of httpd.conf, reloaded the server config, and the virtualhosted sites are being served again. • mod_cache not working

  I have a PHP site that has many dynamically generated pages. I'm trying to turn to mod_cache to help boost performance, because in most cases, content does not change in a given day. I have configured mod_cache as best I could, following examples around the web, including the mod_cache page on apache.org. When I set LogLevel debug, I see a bit of information about the caching that is [not] happening. There are plenty of pairs of lines like this: [Fri Jun 01 17:28:18 2012] [debug] mod_cache.c(141): Adding CACHE_SAVE filter for /foo/bar [Fri Jun 01 17:28:18 2012] [debug] mod_cache.c(148): Adding CACHE_REMOVE_URL filter for /foo/bar Which is fine, because I've set CacheEnable disk /foo, to indicate that I want everything under /foo cached. I'm new to mod_cache, but my understanding about these lines is that it just means that mod_cache has acknowledged that the URL is supposed to be cached, but there are supposed to be more lines indicating that it is saving the data to cache, and then later retrieving them on subsequent hits to the same URL. I can hit the same URL till I'm blue in the face, whether with F5 refreshing, or not, or with different browsers, or different computers. It's always that pair of lines that shows in the logs, and nothing else. When I set CacheEnable disk /, then I see more activity. But I don't want to cache the entire site, and there are many, many different subpaths to the site, so I don't want to have to modify code to set no-cache headers in all the necessary places. I'll mention that mod_rewrite is in use here, rewriting /foo/bar to something like index.php?baz=/foo/bar, but my understanding is that mod_cache uses the pre-rewrite URL, not the post-rewrite URL. As far as I can tell, I have the response headers not getting in the way of caching. • Why won't my service start, and why doesn't upstart output any errors?

  I am trying to 'start gunicorn' as a service via upstart as user ale. I'm using gunicorn/flask on ubuntu 12.04 w/ init (upstart 1.5) Here is my /etc/init/gunicorn.conf setuid btw setgid flask script export HOME=/home/btw export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs . $HOME/.virtualenvs/default/bin/activate cd $HOME/flask workon default gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app end script It doesn't output anything other than gunicorn start/running, process 12992. If i then do 'status gunicorn' I get stop/waiting. any ideas on how to debug this? I tried following http://upstart.ubuntu.com/wiki/Debugging but it didn't help. If I do the following as user ale in the app's directory: 1. workon default 2. gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app then Gunicorn runs fine. Here is ~/flask/gunicorn.py: bind = "0.0.0.0:8080" workers = 3 backlog = 2048 worker_class = "gevent" debug = True daemon = False pidfile ="/tmp/gunicorn.pid" log_level = "debug" accesslog = "/var/log/gunicorn/access.log" errorlog = "/var/log/gunicorn/error.log" user = "btw" group = "flask" Also, /var/log/error.log doesn't show anything new when I try to start the Gunicorn service. • Debugging apache seg fault with gdb

  Apache on a production server of mine is seg faulting intermittently. I have enabled core dump option in apache configuration and have several dumped core files. Unfortunately, since it is a production server, apache or the loaded modules are not compiled with debug symbols. From what I understand, gdb cannot do much without debug symbols. Can I at least find out which module is causing the seg fault, without debug symbols? If so, how? • Wordpress on Apache is redirecting all https to http

  I have a problem with a wordpress site on a server I admin. I don't know anything about wordpress however. My problem is that we want the site to be accessed over https, bot somehow all requests to https:// URLs are answered by the server with a 302, redirecting to http. The wordpress site itself is configured to use https, and we see that in the pages that are generated the links are all https links. In the apache config there are no rewrite rules and no redirects. However, any request to a https:// URL is answered with a redirect to the equivalent http URL. And I really would like to know where these redirects are coming from, what is generating these redirects. I've increased the loglevel on the webserver to DEBUG, but did not get any info there. I tried to enable debug logging in wordpress per the recipy I found here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress But did not get a debug.log file in the directory where one should appear. I'm really at a loss here, and need to fix this urgently. Any hints as where to start looking? Apache is 2.2.14 on Ubuntu. There are several other virtual hosts on this server, using php and https without any problem... Edit: I created a small info.php script and dropped that in the webservers' root. Calling this yields the output of the script, no redirect is generated. This suggest that it's not the webserver, but wordpress that is doing it. A second thing I noticed is that the redirect comes with several cookies, one of which has "httponly" set. Could that be it?
