• OutputPath ignored on projects being build by TFS 2010

  I have installed TFS2010 Beta 2 with default settings and configured a CI build with a solution containing the indivial projects. My *.cspoj files could have: <OutputPath>bin\debug\</OutputPath> Or alternatively: <OutDir>bin\debug\</OutDir> When the build server is done building and running tests etc. all the assemblies are placed in the root of the build drop off folder. How do I configure the build to keep the outputpath or outdir in my projects and store the assemblies and content in the matching folder structure( builddropfolder\bin\debug\ )? I have found a number of post on this most of them relates to TFS 2008 but I have not found solutions for TFS 2010. Perhaps it is possible to solve this in the new workflow file for the buildserver?

  So I'm debugging an app in preperation for its app so release, and I enabled a universal breakpoint for "All Exceptions". Since then, everytime I run the app, the console prints: Catchpoint 2 (throw)Pending breakpoint 1 - "objc_exception_throw" resolved objc[11765]: Object 0x8f18ff0 of class __NSCFLocale autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug objc[11765]: Object 0x8f190a0 of class __NSCFNumber autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug objc[11765]: Object 0x8f1fef0 of class __NSCFLocale autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug Literally printed 3 times. I have no idea what this means but it looks bad. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Visual Studio 2005 Build Order

  I have a Web Application. Sometimes I want to debug a console app that is within the solution. Why is it that when I right click on it and select debug, it builds every single webpage and libraries, which takes a while. When I look at build dependencies for the console app, it lists everything in the solution as the order and tells me to go to build order to change it. In build order, everything checks out... I only have checked the libraries that this console app needs. I also tried setting this console app as a start up project. Same thing... How do I get it so when I want to debug this console app, it only builds that and runs instead of building the entire solution before running?

• How can I set breakpoints in an external JS script in Firebug

  I can easily set breakpoints in embedded JS functions, but I don't see any way of accessing extarnal JS scripts via Firebug unless I happen to enter them during a debug session. Is there a way to do this w/o having to 'explore' my way into the script? @Jason: This is a good point, but in my case I do not have easy access to the script. I am specifically talking about the client scripts which are invoked by the ASP.Net Validators that I would like to debug. I can access them during a debug session through entering the function calls, but I could not find a way to access them directly.

  Hi I am just wondering in VS2010 the web.config is broken up into web.config web.debug.config web.release.config So from what I gathered is the web.config is just like the master template. So I am guessing in my debug I could put things like my local database where in my release one I would put my server database. Now how does it know when to use the release version or debug version? I also here that you can have more than 2. How does that work?

• How do I get MSBuild Task to generate XML Documents when building a solution?

  I have a solution with lots of projects. Each project is configured to generate the XML documentation file when building in Debug-Mode (which is default). That works when I build in Visual Studio 2008. In my build script on my integration server I advise MSBuild to build the whole solution, but it won't generate the documentation files. What can I do? I already tried to explicitly give the Debug-Condition to the build process, but it makes no difference. <Target Name="BuilSolution"> <MSBuild Projects="C:\Path\To\MySolution.sln" targets="Build" Properties="SolutionConfigurationPlatforms='Debug|Any CPU'"/> </Target> There seem to be some ideas to solve this problem when building single projects, but I can't afford to do this, so I need a hint for doing it this way. • Visual C++ application/libarary size anomoly

  This is just a bit of a general question regading app/lib file sizes. When I build a particular library in my C++ solution I notice that the .lib file size is larger in the release build than in the debug (1.2mb Vs 800k). However when I build an app in the same solution, using the aforementioned library, the release .exe is always smaller (as I'd expect) than thew debug .exe (50k vs 200k). I would always have expected the release verisons of anything to be smaller than the debug versions. What gives?

  Hello, gcc 4.4.4 c89 I am writing a client/server application. I have finished and now I want to implement some logging feature that will display log messages on the screen as well as log to a file. However, I don't want to display all log messages (warning, error, critical, unrecoverable, debug, etc). Maybe I can set so that it will display, just errors and debug messages and nothing else. For example, the user might not be interested in the debug messages. Is there any design-pattern that I can follow? What do you normally for for logging? Any tutorials out there that address logging? many thanks for any suggestions,

• Location inheritInChildApplications kill debugger?

  Hi I am wondering is this normal when you add this into your web.config <location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false"> </location> The debugger should stop working. Like when I add this to my site and try to run in debug mode it won't activate any of my debug points nor will it lock up Visual studios 2008. I can have it running and still make edits to my C# code. I take the line away and I get the debug mode back and it locks up VS2008.

• ColdFusion debugging output in my Ajax

  If I turn off "Enable Request Debugging Output", the 3rd option under the Debug Output Settings, then I no longer get debug info in my $.ajax call to a cfc with access="remote". That's good, but I'd like to keep it turned on for all my other programs and turn it off programatically for this one exception. I put <cfsetting showdebugoutput="false"> at the top of my Index.cfm, but that didn't turn off the debug output coming from the cfc. Oh wait. Never mind. I had to put the in the function rather than in Index.cfm.

Is it good idea to have something like this in my code? : $is_local = (strpos($_SERVER['http_host'], 'localhost') !== false); define ('DEBUG',$is_local); And then use it through my code, when setting stuff? $mysql_settings = (DEBUG) ? array(/*localhost settings*/) : array(/*live settings*/); This way, I can use the same files live and on localhost, so I can sync without any fear of having wrong e.g. connection settings on live server. Is it good or wrong idea?

• get function address from name [.debug_info ??]

  Hi, I was trying to write a small debug utility and for this I need to get the function/global variable address given its name. This is built-in debug utility, which means that the debug utility will run from within the code to be debugged or in plain words I cannot parse the executable file. Now is there a well-known way to do that ? The plan I have is to make the .debug_* sections to to be loaded into to memory [which I plan to do by a cheap trick like this in ld script] .data { *(.data) __sym_start = .; (debug_); __sym_end = .; } Now I have to parse the section to get the information I need, but I am not sure this is doable or is there issues with this - this is all just theory. But it also seems like too much of work :-) is there a simple way. Or if someone can tell upfront why my scheme will not work, it ill also be helpful. Thanks in Advance, Alex.

I have added the appropriate public key afterwards to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys I can also ssh to the node, but as I have not been asked to give it a user name or password or set up any sort of account, I cannot manually ssh into the node. The setup of the node is all handled by maas server. It seems like a simple error of looking at the wrong key or looking in the wrong places, only other suggestions I can find are to destroy the environment and rebuild (but that didn't work umpteen times now) or leave it to build the instance once the node has powered up, but I have left for a few hours, and left overnight to build with no luck.

• SQL SERVER – SSMS: Memory Usage By Memory Optimized Objects Report

  At conferences and at speaking engagements at the local UG, there is one question that keeps on coming which I wish were never asked. The question around, “Why is SQL Server using up all the memory and not releasing even when idle?” Well, the answer can be long and with the release of SQL Server 2014, this got even more complicated. This release of SQL Server 2014 has the option of introducing In-Memory OLTP which is completely new concept and our dependency on memory has increased multifold. In reality, nothing much changes but we have memory optimized objects (Tables and Stored Procedures) additional which are residing completely in memory and improving performance. As a DBA, it is humanly impossible to get a hang of all the innovations and the new features introduced in the next version. So today’s blog is around the report added to SSMS which gives a high level view of this new feature addition. This reports is available only from SQL Server 2014 onwards because the feature was introduced in SQL Server 2014. Earlier versions of SQL Server Management Studio would not show the report in the list. If we try to launch the report on the database which is not having In-Memory File group defined, then we would see the message in report. To demonstrate, I have created new fresh database called MemoryOptimizedDB with no special file group. Here is the query used to identify whether a database has memory-optimized file group or not. SELECT TOP(1) 1 FROM sys.filegroups FG WHERE FG.[type] = 'FX' Once we add filegroup using below command, we would see different version of report. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] CONTAINS MEMORY_OPTIMIZED_DATA GO The report is still empty because we have not defined any Memory Optimized table in the database.  Total allocated size is shown as 0 MB. Now, let’s add the folder location into the filegroup and also created few in-memory tables. We have used the nomenclature of IMO to denote “InMemory Optimized” objects. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILE ( NAME = N'MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO', FILENAME = N'E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQL\DATA\MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO') TO FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] GO You may have to change the path based on your SQL Server configuration. Below is the script to create the table. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO --Drop table if it already exists. IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.SQLAuthority','U') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority GO CREATE TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority ( ID INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Name CHAR(500)  COLLATE Latin1_General_100_BIN2 NOT NULL DEFAULT 'Pinal', CONSTRAINT PK_SQLAuthority_ID PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (ID), INDEX hash_index_sample_memoryoptimizedtable_c2 HASH (Name) WITH (BUCKET_COUNT = 131072) ) WITH (MEMORY_OPTIMIZED = ON, DURABILITY = SCHEMA_AND_DATA) GO As soon as above script is executed, table and index both are created. If we run the report again, we would see something like below. Notice that table memory is zero but index is using memory. This is due to the fact that hash index needs memory to manage the buckets created. So even if table is empty, index would consume memory. More about the internals of how In-Memory indexes and tables work will be reserved for future posts. Now, use below script to populate the table with 10000 rows INSERT INTO SQLAuthority VALUES (DEFAULT) GO 10000 Here is the same report after inserting 1000 rows into our InMemory table.    There are total three sections in the whole report. Total Memory consumed by In-Memory Objects Pie chart showing memory distribution based on type of consumer – table, index and system. Details of memory usage by each table. The information about all three is taken from one single DMV, sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats This DMV contains memory usage statistics for both user and system In-Memory tables. If we query the DMV and look at data, we can easily notice that the system tables have negative object IDs.  So, to look at user table memory usage, below is the over-simplified version of query. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO SELECT OBJECT_NAME(OBJECT_ID), * FROM sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats WHERE OBJECT_ID > 0 GO This report would help DBA to identify which in-memory object taking lot of memory which can be used as a pointer for designing solution. We use the freeradius server to authenticate WLAN users. • Debugging .NET 2.0 Assembly from unmanaged Code in VS2010?

  Ive run into a serious snag trying to debug a .NET 2.0 assembly that is called from unmanaged code in Visual Studio 2010. I maintain a host of components that using COM interop and custom .NET runtime hosting and ever since installing Visual Studio 2010 Ive been utterly blocked by VS 2010s inability to apparently debug .NET 2.0 assemblies when launching through unmanaged code. • Tuning Red Gate: #4 of Some

  First time connecting to these servers directly (keys to the kingdom, bwa-ha-ha-ha. oh, excuse me), so I'm going to take a look at the server properties, just to see if there are any issues there. Max memory is set, cool, first possible silly mistake clear. In fact, these look to be nicely set up. Oh, I'd like to see the ANSI Standards set by default, but it's not a big deal. The default location for database data is the F:\ drive, where I saw all the activity last time. Cool, the people maintaining the servers in our company listen, parallelism threshold is set to 35 and optimize for ad hoc is enabled. No shocks, no surprises. The basic setup is appropriate. On to the problem database. Nothing wrong in the properties. The database is in SIMPLE recovery, but I think it's a reporting system, so no worries there. Again, I'd prefer to see the ANSI settings for connections, but that's the worst thing I can see. Time to look at the queries, tables, indexes and statistics because all the information I've collected over the last several days suggests that we're not looking at a systemic problem (except possibly not enough memory), but at the traditional tuning issues. I just want to note that, I started looking at the system, not the queries. So should you when tuning your environment. I know, from the data collected through SQL Monitor, what my top poor performing queries are, and the most frequently called, etc. I'm starting with the most frequently called. I'm going to get the execution plan for this thing out of the cache (although, with the cache dumping constantly, I might not get it). And it's not there. Called 1.3 million times over the last 3 days, but it's not in cache. Wow. OK. I'll see what's in cache for this database: SELECT  deqs.creation_time,         deqs.execution_count,         deqs.max_logical_reads,         deqs.max_elapsed_time,         deqs.total_logical_reads,         deqs.total_elapsed_time,         deqp.query_plan,         SUBSTRING(dest.text, (deqs.statement_start_offset / 2) + 1,                   (deqs.statement_end_offset - deqs.statement_start_offset) / 2                   + 1) AS QueryStatement FROM    sys.dm_exec_query_stats AS deqs         CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(deqs.sql_handle) AS dest         CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_query_plan(deqs.plan_handle) AS deqp WHERE   dest.dbid = DB_ID('Warehouse') AND deqs.statement_end_offset > 0 AND deqs.statement_start_offset > 0 ORDER BY deqs.max_logical_reads DESC ; And looking at the most expensive operation, we have our first bad boy: Multiple table scans against very large sets of data and a sort operation. a sort operation? It's an insert. Oh, I see, the table is a heap, so it's doing an insert, then sorting the data and then inserting into the primary key. First question, why isn't this a clustered index? Let's look at some more of the queries. The next one is deceiving. Here's the query plan: You're thinking to yourself, what's the big deal? Well, what if I told you that this thing had 8036318 reads? I know, you're looking at skinny little pipes. Know why? Table variable. Estimated number of rows = 1. Actual number of rows. well, I'm betting several more than one considering it's read 8 MILLION pages off the disk in a single execution. We have a serious and real tuning candidate. Oh, and I missed this, it's loading the table variable from a user defined function. Let me check, let me check. YES! A multi-statement table valued user defined function. And another tuning opportunity. This one's a beauty, seriously. Did I also mention that they're doing a hash against all the columns in the physical table. I'm sure that won't lead to scans of a 500,000 row table, no, not at all. OK. I lied. Of course it is. At least it's on the top part of the Loop which means the scan is only executed once. I just did a cursory check on the next several poor performers. all calling the UDF. I think I found a big tuning opportunity. At this point, I'm typing up internal emails for the company. Someone just had their baby called ugly. In addition to a series of suggested changes that we need to implement, I'm also apologizing for being such an unkind monster as to question whether that third eye & those flippers belong on such an otherwise lovely child.

  I've apache2 and tomcat6 running on port 80 on ubuntu server 9.10. I've a registered domain name and I'll access the jsp index page navigating to http://abc.mydomain.com. The page is under tomcat_home/webapps/myapp and the below are tomcat virtual hosting in server.xml file: <Host name="abc.mydomain.com" debug="0" appBase="webapps" unpackWARs="true"> <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger" directory="logs" prefix="virtual_log1." suffix=".log" timestamp="true"/> <Context path="" docBase="/usr/share/tomcat/webapps/myapps" debug="0" reloadable="true"/> </Host> Recently a new domain has been bought(xyz.mydomain.com) and I'm asked to do the virtual hosting so that the new domain name directly points the page "admin.jsp" which is located under 'tomcat_home/webapps/myapps/WE-INF/js/'. How could I do this? If I type http://abc.mydomain.com/admin I'll get the page what I wanted. I should access the page just by typing http://xyz.mydomain.com.

Version 1: Above script was improved to get more details about the database Version 2: This version of the script will include pretty much have all the backup related information in a single script. Do not miss to save it for future use. Are you a Database Administrator or a Database Developer? Three years ago I created a very small survey and the results which I have received are very interesting.
