• Using "enterprise" switches in home network?

  Hi everyone, After more than 12 years working with computers, I am still way behind when it comes to networking, so please bear with me :) As of this Christmas, the number of computers in my home has increased and it's well about time to upgrade the current network hardware in order to offer LAN connection to all computers. Trying to find a cheap solution, A close friend offered me a great deal on a "enterprise-class" Switch from HP (more LAN ports than I would ever need), at the same price as what a brand new Netgear or D-link Switch with 6/8 ports would cost me in retail. Would it be common sense to get this one and start using it immediately and never again have to worry about running out of LAN connections, or am I taking on a bigger bite than what I could chew?

• Could my 64-bit server be somehow identifying itself as a 32-bit server?

  Has anyone ever heard of a 64-bit OS identifying itself as a 32-bit OS? We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 development server. We've been trying to activate it with a product key from MSDN, but it keeps telling us the the key is invalid. I've opened a ticket with MSDN for this. Then something odd happened -- I tried to install a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005. After it extracted, we got this message: This version of hotfix.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program... Now, we're pretty sure this is a 64-bit OS. Computer Properties says: System Type: 64-bit Operating System Also, we have both a "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x64)" directory. I don't know how the product key activator or the SQL install program attempts to divine the type of OS, but could it be...wrong?

• Forcing Remote machine to serve RDP (or similar) session

  Due to a Dell/Nvidia design flaw in the Dell Inspiron 1420 series, my laptop no longer shows a display. I am looking for a solution to view it remotely. I have used it via RDP in the past (not for a year though) however for what ever reason I can no longer RDP, it could have been disabled some how. However, I'm on the same LAN, I can ping it, and know its login creditials. Is there a way I can hack into it remotely to force it to serve a RDP session or an alternative? Please bear in mind my only view I could have to its interface is via a remote session. Its running Windows 7 Pro

• Best Amazon S3 File Manager Utility?

  Ever since I started using Amazon's S3 service I've been struggling to find a good solution for simple file management, without having to write my own app to browse my buckets, upload and delete files, etc. The best I've found so far to do this is S3Fox. But it's far from perfect, it has problems deleting files and folders. Comments on the Firefox plugin page indicate I'm not the only person with this problem and the developer does not respond to emails. I've looked around briefly, but couldn't find anything that looked any better than S3Fox. Please tell me there's a better way! Edit (07/26/2009): The Firefox S3Fox extension seems to be getting love from its developer again, the problems I was having before have gone away, and I'm using it on a regular basis now with no problems!

• How to setup heartbeat for IP fail over on SSH failure

  I wonder if anyone can help me, I am trying to setup heartbeat on a redhat 5 to failover an IP address when ssh stops responding on a server. So basically you ssh to a VIP and then get put through which ever server has the floating ip. 192.168.0.100 | | /------------------------\ | /------------------------\ | Server 01 | | | Server 02 | | eth0 - 192.168.0.1 |-----/ | eth0 - 192.168.0.2 | | eth0:0 - 192.168.0.100 | | eth0:0 - down | \------------------------/ \------------------------/ if ssh stops responding i want eth0:0 to be brought up on the second machine to allow ssh connections to carry on being served. • How to manage iowait over cifs?

  For backup purposes we have Cifs file Server running that contains encrypted containers for backing up the more sensitive data. The container is mounted with cryptsetup and loop as a local filesystem and the rsync is used for backups. Because the Cifs server is not the fastest machine ever built, running the rsync process results in an iowait on the servers running the backup which in turn drives Nagios into an email frenzy. The question is, how do reduce the iowait on the server? Configuring Nagios to not report seems more like a workaround then a solution. Stretching the backups over different time intervals is already done with little effect and spending money is also not an option because apparently, we are talking about a "non-critical system".

• Localhost working fine with executing php code except mail function.

  i tried executing the mail() and got the following error "Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() " but SMTP and smtp_port are both set in php.ini more ever other codes are working fine with localhost. disabled or/and added exception to firewell no result.... tried telnet localhost 25 error:could not connect to localhost port 25:connection failed..... Thunderbird my mail client says:could not connect to server localhost the connection was refused.... php.ini [mail function] ; For Win32 only. ; http://php.net/smtp SMTP = localhost smtp_port = 25 running mercury mail server in xampp... previously working fine but now not working..

• Prevent Win7 boot loader from taking over the WinXP boot loader

  My setup: 1 physical hard drive (500gb divided equally into 2 partitions) Windows XP Partition (Current OS) Empty Partition where I will be installing Windows 7 My question is how do I prevent the Windows7 boot loader from taking over my WindowsXP boot loader when installing the new OS ? The reason I am asking is because I already have a ghosted backup of my WinXP partition and if I ever need to restore my xp partition using that backup, would it not overwrite the Windows7 boot loader that was placed in the XP partition with the one from the backup, thus making windows 7 unable to boot. Also what would happen if I decided to delete the Windows XP partition altogether somewhere down the road and along with it the Win7 boot loader that was placed there, wouldn't that cause the system not to boot at all.. To avoid these issues, I simply want to make sure that BOTH the Win7 and WinXP boot loaders are available on their respective partitions and they do not interfere with each other in any way. • What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?

  I periodically am called upon to do maintenance work on a system that was built by a real rocket surgeon. There's so much wrong with it that it's hard to know where to start. No, wait, I'll start at the beginning: in the early days of the project, the designer was told that the system would need to scale, and he'd read that a source of scalability problems was traffic between the application and database servers, so he made sure to minimize this traffic. How? By putting all of the application logic in SQL Server stored procedures. Seriously. The great bulk of the application functions by the HTML front end formulating XML messages. When the middle tier receives an XML message, it uses the document element's tag name as the name of the stored procedure it should call, and calls the SP, passing it the entire XML message as a parameter. It takes the XML message that the SP returns and returns it directly back to the front end. There is no other logic in the application tier. (There was some code in the middle tier to validate the incoming XML messages against a library of schemas. But I removed it, after ascertaining that 1) only a small handful of messages had corresponding schemas, 2) the messages didn't actually conform to these schemas, and 3) after validating the messages, if any errors were encountered, the method discarded them. "This fuse box is a real time-saver - it comes from the factory with pennies pre-installed!") I've seen software that does the wrong thing before. Lots of it. I've written quite a bit. But I've never seen anything like the steely-eyed determination to do the wrong thing, at every possible turn, that's embodied in the design and programming of this system. Well, at least he went with what he knew, right? Um. Apparently, what he knew was Access. And he didn't really understand Access. Or databases. Here's a common pattern in this code: SELECT @TestCodeID FROM TestCode WHERE TestCode = @TestCode SELECT @CountryID FROM Country WHERE CountryAbbr = @CountryAbbr SELECT Invoice.*, TestCode.*, Country.* FROM Invoice JOIN TestCode ON Invoice.TestCodeID = TestCode.ID JOIN Country ON Invoice.CountryID = Country.ID WHERE Invoice.TestCodeID = @TestCodeID AND Invoice.CountryID = @CountryID Okay, fine. You don't trust the query optimizer either. But how about this? (Originally, I was going to post this in What's the best comment in source code you have ever encountered? but I realized that there was so much more to write about than just this one comment, and things just got out of hand.) At the end of many of the utility stored procedures, you'll see code that looks like the following: -- Fix NULLs SET @TargetValue = ISNULL(@TargetValue, -9999) Yes, that code is doing exactly what you can't allow yourself to believe it's doing lest you be driven mad. If the variable contains a NULL, he's alerting the caller by changing its value to -9999. Here's how this number is commonly used: -- Get target value EXEC ap_GetTargetValue @Param1, @Param2, OUTPUT @TargetValue -- Check target value for NULL value IF @TargetValue = -9999 ... Really. I'm often reminded, when I work on this system, of Wolfgang Pauli's famous response to a student: "That isn't right. It isn't even wrong." This can't really be the very worst program ever. • Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus

  Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

• How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Bad temperature sensors on Foxconn motherboard?

  I have a system with a Foxconn V400 series motherboard and AMD Athlon 3000+ processor. Ever since I got it a few years ago the fans (particularly the CPU fan) have been really loud. So recently I installed SpeedFan to see why they were running so fast. SpeedFan reported the CPU temperature to be 32C, and one motherboard sensor at about 26C. But the other two motherboard sensors were reporting 78C and 64C respectively. Naturally the fans were both maxed out because of this, with the CPU fan at 5800rpm and the case fan at 2400rpm. I opened the case and everything inside was literally cool to the touch, with the exception of the CPU heatsink which was slightly warm, but nowhere near 78C. It seems like the temperature sensors are either defective or being read incorrectly. Is there some way I can decrease my fan noise without risking damage to my processor? Some way to ignore those two temp sensors? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How would I put together a site requiring several TB? [closed]

  Lets say I have a site with unmetered 100MBPS bandwidth (i assume its bits?) and the ram i require. Most plans i see offer HDD that hold 250gb and 1TB. But what happens if i compile/generate enough data that i require 10tb or 25tb? (I'd likely have two servers but...) I wouldn't be serving all of that data (well not to the public) so CDN wouldn't make sense. What do i do in this scenario? Do I need to get a custom plan from a hosting provider? (if so how do i find them?) Are there services that allow me to mount remote drives (that sounds wrong unless its a CDN so maybe not). Are there host that deals specifically with unmetered bandwidth and provides lots of disk space? Math says ~1TB is the most i'll ever need but if i happen to need more i'd like to know my options.

• How to safely backup MySQL using VSS-based backup solutions

  One of my clients is running MySQL on a Windows Server 2008 system. Their regular backups are performed using StorageCraft's ShadowCopy, which uses the VSS service to perform backups of open files. Some investigation indicates that MySQL is not entirely VSS-aware, and that the tables need to be locked prior to the shadow operation, then unlocked afterwards. There is a post at http://forum.storagecraft.com/Community/forums/p/548/2702.aspx which indicates the steps that need to be performed, however the user had some difficulty in performing them and no follow up solution was ever posted. Specifically, they succeeded in writing a batch file to lock the database, however once the batch file returns from MySQL it drops the connection and thus relinquishes the lock. I'm looking for a method that I can send the MySQL command FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK, then perform the backup, then send UNLOCK TABLES when the backup is complete. Alternatively, I can exclude the MySQL data storage folder from backup, and schedule a mysqldump backup into a folder that will then be backed up by VSS. Can I have some recommendations please?

• how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

• Run a program in compatibility mode without Administrator privileges

  I have a PC which is mostly used for playing games. The PC is a few years old, running XP, and most likely won't ever be upgraded to Windows 7. However, there are a few games that need to be run in compatibility mode for some reason, and this currently requires them to be run as the administrator. Unfortunately, I haven't found any way around this - although I have the administrator password, I don't want to reveal it to the others who use the PC, and this means that I have to be present every time to start the program for them (using Run as ... - Administrator). Is there any way I can allow these programs to be run in compatibility mode without requiring elevated user privileges? I have already made the standard user a Power User, but this hasn't helped at all. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Should I be running my scheduled backups as SYSTEM or as the our domain admin?

  I have a daily backup which is scheduled through the Task Scheduler. It failed with a strange error code last night, but I was able to search and find a blog post with how to avoid the error in the future. However, one of his recommendations was to run the backups as the Administrator user of the domain. Since all of the files being backed up are local to this system, should I continue to have the backups run as SYSTEM? Or is it actually better to run it as a different user? I have been running these backups for well over a year now and have only had a handful of failures, but ironically when it does fail, the error code means it was a permissions issue (or so I read, this code seems to be undocumented by Microsoft). Thanks in advance for any insight into this. Might as well post the error code here too, in case anyone would like to share their insight on this as well, but I rarely ever get this error, so I don't care too much about it: 4294967294

• How to set up Dell OMSA tools on Debian 6 (Squeeze) (PE2950)

  I assume I have set up them up incorrectly or am missing a library or dependency. When I log into the OMSA web interface I can't see anything Also, omreport tells me nothing; root@box:~# omreport storage controller No controllers found I assume these two will use the same source of information so what ever is wrong will fix them both. I set up OMSA as per these instructions. Also I have compiled MegaCLI (as this is a PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc 6/i controller) and I have used that to update the RAID firmware, so that works, but the Dell tools aren't. • Microsoft Excel Error

  I am working with a user that has Office 2007 installed. When they open excel with a blank workbook and then they try to close excel without having done anything, it gets hung for about a minute or two and then gives the warning message: "Microsoft Office Excel is waiting on another application to complete an OLE action." Has anyone ever seen this happen before? If so can you please help me figure out how to resolve this. It doesn't matter what excel file they open or if it is a blank/new workbook. Please Help.

• Outlook collapses IMAP folders by default

  I recently switched my mail account from POP3 to IMAP and created server-side rules to help me manage my mail better. I use Outlook 2007 as a mail client. For some reason, it seems then ever since I switched to IMAP, all my folders are collapsed by default. Since my folder tree goes down 4 levels, this is pretty annoying. I don't know any better than Outlook remembering my folder preferences, but it seems to forget them as soon as I close the program now. Is there any cause for this, and more importantly, is there a known fix for this problem?

  Ever since Google implemented their new look at the beginning of May, I have been having trouble with their search engine changing all of the spaces in my query to plus signs. This behavior occurs when I use the search box in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. For example, if I search for google search plus signs I am taken to the following URL, where google+search+plus+signs is in the search box. http://www.google.com/search?q=google+search+plus+signs&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a However if I perform the search from google.com, I get taken to a different URL with google search plus signs as I'd expect: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=google+search+plus+signs&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp=d2a3ca21987adb1 Do I need to update my browsers or something?

• Plesk on Windows Server 2008 memory usage

  I have a server running IIS and Plesk. There is a problem every day now in which the memory usage of PleskControlPanel.exe and w3wp.exe slowly increases. And at some point all of the sites hosted on the server go down. Restarting Plesk through its panel will reset its memory usage for a while, and restarting IIS will make it last even longer, but there is still the constant memory climbing problem. I cannot see anything by looking through the event viewer. Has anyone ever seen anything like this with Plesk on Windows? Thanks for any help.

• Computer Randomly Restarts (no crash dump)

  Hey everyone this is my first time here, so, my computer got pulled out of his place the other day by accident and it never got back to working decently ever again. I just stopped using it because everytime i power it on, it restarts. Some times it doesn't even reach the desktop, others it even allows me to run a game or something. It gets really random. Today i was trying my last attempt before sending it to fix and it ran fine for 40 minutes but as i tried to run a game the screen got really messeud up full of colorful lines and stuff and i'm assuming it had to do with the graphics card. Altho, my question is, what can be causing all this restart thingie? Can it be just the Power Supply failing me and hence, not giving enough power to make the graphic card go for instance? • CA ArcServe r11.1 - have to switch Tape Drive Offline then Online to finish backup

  Ill keep it brief, I have an HP Ultrium 1 in a server currently running CA ArcServe r11.1. I have 5 daily backup tapes, each of which are new. 3 of the 5 work fine without intervention but 2 of them stop at varying points through the backup asking for a new tape, even though that tape is not full. The way I have found around this is to switch the tape drive offline for 10 minutes then switch it back online, whilst the backup is still running. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, any ideas how to permanently fix this. If all else fails just some pointers in the right direction. Thanks
