• whats the point of @localhost entries for a mail server

  Hi, After recently setting up a mail server I am now adding the users that I need. As part of the tutorial I followed I created root@localhost as an account and also a bunch of aliases (postmaster@localhost, webmaster@localhost etc). What is the point of having al these localhost addresses? it seems that no one can ever mail them directly... Also I am curious as to what targets I should include on my domain (like postmaster, root, webmaster etc) and what ramifications there might be for doing so?

  Has anyone ever transcoded music from a high-quality aac to an mp3 (or vice-versa). The internet is full of people who say this should never be done, but apart from the theoretical standpoint that you can only lose information, does it matter in practise? is the difference perceivable, except on studio-equipment? does the re-encoding actually lose much information? If, p.e., high frequences are chopped away by the initial compression, those frequencies aren't there anymore, so this part of the compression-algorithm won't touch the data during the second compression. Am i wrong?

• Why would image thumbnails not be showing in all search engines in all browsers?

  For over a week now, when I search for a word at Google, it correctly gives me some preview image thumbnails: But when I click on "images", it doesn't show me any thumbnails: The same thing happens at Bing.com, when I search Bing itself it gives me some thumbnails on the general search result page: But when I click on "images", it doesn't show me any thumbnails: The same thing happens at Yahoo: If I click on one of the broken thumbnails, it shows me the picture fine: Thumbnails at youtube also work fine: It seems each search engine is hanging on different URLs as shown above: t1.gstatic.com ts3.mm.bing.net thm-a02.yimg.com so it doesn't seem to be the problem of one specific URL not sending thumbnails, it is just a problem with search engine image thumbnails in general. Also, this happens in every browser I try: Explorer, Firefox, Chrome. What could be the problem? Is it my computer, some setting somewhere, my router, my Internet provider (T-Online, Germany)? Has anyone ever had this problem and solved it?

  I’m struggling with one of the most frustrating bugs I’ve ever come across. Bug description:   The for command of the command-interpreter cannot see hidden files. Reproduction steps: Create a temporary directory Create a few files Assign a variety of attributes to the files (including hidden) Use a command like for %i in (*) do echo "%i" Expected results:    All files are processed in the for loop either by default or though a switch. Actual results: Files with any attribute other than hidden are processed; files flagged as hidden are skipped There is no switch to the for command to allow it to process hidden files Implications:    There is no way to process all files from the command-prompt. Question:    How the heck can hidden files be processed from the command-prompt or batch-files (at least in Windows if not DOS)?

• Computer POST's and draws the BIOS screens very slowly - Motherboard issue?

  I have a desktop that refuses to boot into Windows. I used Hitachi DFT and the HD came back OK. I then used Memtest86+ and it took hours for the test to run. After 8+ hours it was up to test number 6. I aborted and ran Memtest86. It ran at basically the same speed. I aborted and went to look at the BIOS settings. The computer is running slow at POST. It takes a long time for the keyboard to be recognized, etc. The BIOS settings takes time to be (slowly) drawn on the screen. What could be causing such behavior? EDIT: I gave back the computer a while back without ever discovering the cause so I'm closing the question.

  I installed xampp back around January 2009, and CF8 to test coldfusion on my macbook (note: I do not think that this issue is related to CF, but only xampp). I only ever used the apache part of xampp, and this was working for over a year. In the last couple of months at the most I've started getting the following error message (even for none CF sites, and non .cfm pages, the error occurs for .html files..): Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server.   I have windows XP professional installed on my desktop. It shows up the following errors - Physical memory dumping blue screen. : This aint a new problem, i have been facing this problem ever since i bought this systme. initially the maintainence guy said it was a faulty hard drive and i have got it replaced 3 times already in the past 1 yr. The system gets utterly slow after a usage of around 2-3 months and then these errors crop up and i have to reinstall my windows to keep away these errors. But this time,its been only a week and the blue screen has come up 3 times. What can be the actual cause of the error?? Mine is an assembled machine, its a core 2duo with gigabyte motherboard and a 1 gb ram, 160 gb seagate hdd. please help me its a seriously annoying problem. Edit : A new error recent popprd up, what should i do now??

• How can i resolve all external addresses to internal address?

  I am currently setting up a Linux server for a WIFI access-point. When ever someone who is connected to the hotspot/access-point? tries to reload a page they get forced onto the one page. Note: this wont have internet access! ie: user tries accessing www.google.com = it returns 192.168.1.200 or example.domain I've read that "dnsmasq" can be used to redirect any external addresses to an internal address. but haven't had any luck. Anyone have an example of a config for "dnsmasq"? I have also read that this can be done through a proxy?

  Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard I have always had problems with Skype. When I start a video chat, Skype tells me that my camera is not installed on the machine (even though it clearly is). After searching the internet I have found some 'solutions' but none of them work. After trying them, it makes my camera feed appear as a blank, green image. How can I get Skype to function with the built in iSight with Snow Leopard properly? is there any body else face this problem?

• Troubleshooting web timeouts with a Belkin router

  I have a Belkin FSD7632-4 ADSL wifi router. Ever since I got it, I've faced this problem of websites timing out. For example, I go to flickr.com, and the images won't load because they come from farm1.static.flickr.com. Either I wait 10 minutes or so until the timed out sockets are closed and retry (with variable results) or I reboot the router. This happens irrespective of whether I use wired or wifi network. I'm in India, using Airtel Broadband, and if I use my ISP supplied Beetel 220BX ADSL router (which has no wifi and only one LAN port), everything works fine. I copied over the broadband settings from my old router: VPI/VCI values=1/32 Encapsulation=LLC MTU=1492 I have not enabled any firewall on the router. Is there anything else I can try? Or is it a defect with the router and should I take it back for a replacement? I bought it just 2 months ago.

  Currently I am using : OSX 10.7.5 VMWare:5.0.1 with windows 7 professional Problem: Getting disconnected from LAN game. Description: 4 of us are trying to play frozen throne on the same network. The thing is, they are all running windows computers, and I am running W7 on VMware. I haven't made any adjustments other than changing from "sharing internet with my mac" to Bridged network "autodetect". When we start to play, everything works then all of a sudden I get disconnected. This happens every once in a while, the timing differs from time to time. None of the others ever disconnects. What could be the problem? Thanks for the help!

(BTW, the system clock works just as it ever did and keeps time precisely.) Thanks.

• Where can you see the data that's been recorded by a tracking cookie?

  I've always read that cookies can, and do, store sensitive information such as OTHER websites that you've visited outside the one to which the cookie belongs. I've started to read up about it and can see that it's persistent cookies which typically do this - and well I've started to look through cookie files on my computer - but I can't see any telling info in them! Just a few jumbled lines and not the scary urls of other sites that I'm looking for. How do I view them? Or is the raw data of visited urls only ever stored on the server end of the site that's tracking me? I'm on Win7 and can look at cookies from FF 12, Chrome 18, IE9 and Safari 5.1. Thanks for illuminating this once and for all.

• Is it possible to interrupt or cancel the trash-delete process?

  I am connected to the company server, onsite not remote, which is Windows based. When, in the OS finder, I go to delete a file or directory that resides on the window-based server, the trash progress panel appears as usual. Not infrequently it will just hang there appearing to be active but no progress occurs on the progress bar. So the X is chosen to stop or cancel the process. A new panel appears, and while appearing to be active, again, just hangs there indefinitely. My lack of reputation prevents posting a screen shot - sorry. The question then is this: Is there a way via the Activity Monitor, Terminal, etc. to interrupt this deleting process in the Mac OS? Currently, I have to force shutdown and reboot to eradicate the ever-deleting panel. Finder relaunch does not solve and only eliminates the finder until I force reboot. Any assistance is appreciated. • apt-get install phpmyadmin on debian doesn't install /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf

  I'm trying to install phpmyadmin on my webserver, using this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_debian_lamp_server I did that once, and it worked like a dream, but I hated the looks of phpmyadmin (maybe the oldest layout ever) and decided to delete it, and didn't know that deleting is done with apt-get remove phpmyadmin and did in phpmyadmin directory rm * and thought that it's done. However, as I can't find the debian build of phpmyadmin anywhere, I want to install it again, but when I add Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to /etc/apache2/apache2.conf, and restart apache, it give's me this error: apache2: Syntax error on line 73 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. failed! No matter how I try, I always get this error, and phpmyadmin isn't there.

• Mysterious winamp ratings that come from nowhere

  Winamp gives the option to rate songs. This is not a new feature. Everytime I would reinstall Windows and reinstall Winamp my ratings would all go away as expected, and I would have to re-rate everything. However, this time when I reinstalled Winamp, after using it for a few days, songs would appear in my top rated list as being rated. Some of these I remember rating a long time ago before I reinstalled Windows, and some of these I don't remember ever rating. Where are these ratings coming from?

• Will my laptop be ok with this different laptop charger?

  So the original laptop charger broke and I switched to a charger from a laptop that I no longer use. The specifications from each are: Original Input:AC 100-240V 1.5A 50-60Hz Output: DC 19V 3.42A Other Charger Input: AC 100-240V 1.5A 50-60Hz Output: 20V 3.25A Yes, the polarity is the same. Also, the wattage has a difference of .02 from what I understand. Is wattage ever important, and more specifically, a wattage difference of that size. Feel free to ask me any other questions about the chargers and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

  Some friends gave me their old HandyCam and a bunch of tapes asking me to put them on a DVD. The model is Sony DCR-TVR103 and it records onto Hi8 digital tapes. It has a firewire port also.   If you ping google.com from different countries you will get replies from local google servers. How does that work? Can a DNS record have multiple A addresses? Could someone point me to the technology they use to do that? Update. OK, so Google's DNS server gives out a different IP based on the location. But, as Alexandre Jasmin pointed out, how do they track the location? Surely their DNS won't ever see your IP address. Is the server querying Google's DNS guaranteed to be from the location it represents?

• Configuring HAProxy with memcache with failover

  I'm configuring a new set of servers for an existing Wordpress site, and it's been requested that memcache be available and made more resilient. The idea proposed is to have HAProxy send requests to one of the two servers; if that memcache instance is inaccessible, then it should switch to the second, but should not switch back to the first if it comes back up unless the second is then unavailable. This doesn't appear to be a particularly common use case and I've not found much along these lines except to possibly set up the first node with an enormous rise value, such as: server server1 10.112.58.16:11211 check inter 5s fall 3 rise 99999999 server server2 10.112.58.19:11211 check backup which falls over as expected when server1 is unavailable. It won't ever fall back to server1, though, even if server2 goes offline. Can this be made to work?

• Mac Grey/White Screen of Death

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Mac Book Pro and Photosohp working canvas lost off screen somewhere

  I seem to have a unique issue. I have a mac book pro which I often have connected to one or 2 additional monitors, and I think this is in part my issue. Cause when Im at home working with only the built in monitor and I go to open something new or existing in photoshop my canvas if you will call it that is no where to be found. I checked my display settings, its treating it as a one monitor solution. I've tried to in photoshop to bring all my windows to front, Ive tried to cascade and tile my windows, ive tried to reset my work area, and to no avail I can't for the life of me get the canvas to come to my screen so I can work with what ever I intend to work on. Anyone else have this problem or run into similar? How did you fix it?
