• My LAN USB NIC is not working in ubuntu 11.10?

• Ubuntu 10.10 not recognizing external hard drive

  Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a hard drive by itself (no windows). All updates are up to date. Everything`works fine except when I plug in a 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive....it is not recognized. When I plug in an 8 gig flash drive it is recognized no problem. What do I mean by "not recognized"? I mean: how do you know it was not recognized. You can check the command "cat /proc/partitions" in a terminal with and without the hdd attached. If you see some difference, it's ok. If the difference is something like "sda1" (sd+letter+number) then you have partition on it, maybe it can't be handled in Ubuntu (no filesystem on it or so). If there is only "sda" in the difference for example (sd+letter, but no number after it) then the drive itself is detected, just no partition is created on it. Also you can check out the messages of the kernel, with the "dmesg" command in the terminal. If there is no disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions, there can be an USB level problem, you can issue command "lsusb" as it was suggested before my answer. It's really matter of what do you mean about "not recognized". @Marco Ceppi @Oli @Pitto By "not recognized" I meant that when I plug in a 8 gig flash drive an icon immediately appears on the desktop imdicating that there is a flash drive plugged in and I can click on it and view the files on the flash drive. It also shows up on the "Nautilus" default file manager. When I plug in the 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive, I get no indication on the desktop or the file manager (thus "not recogized"). When I run the command "cat/proc/partitions/" I get an error message Could not open location 'file:///home/bob/cat/proc/partitions' with or without the external hard drive installed. With the "dmeg" command I get about 10 pages of info with no mention of disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions. I’ve been with Campus Recruitment for just over a year. I’ve been with Oracle for three years. I was keen to get into the campus role after having watched other colleagues working in campus and when the opportunity arrived I jumped at it. The journey has been fantastic thus far. I’m responsible for the GBU hiring at Oracle. Why did you record the flash-mob video - what were your goals? Flash-mobs were one thing that took off really big in India after the first one in Mumbai. It’s the hot thing in the student community at the moment. A better way to reach out and connect with students. I think that it is also a good way to demonstrate our openness and culture at Oracle – demonstrate that we are very flexible and that we have a cool culture. I knew the video could be shared on our social media pages and reach out to a wider student community What was the preparation and rehearsal for the video like? When I decided to do the video, I had to decide who I would like to do the flash-mob. The new campus hires to Oracle would be ideal for this. We were 2 teams at 2 different locations and Each team took 2-3 songs and choreographed it themselves. Every day at 5pm, each team would meet up and every other weekend the whole group met. Practicing went on for about a month like this. How was the video received by participants and by students on the University campus? The event was well received. We did it during the lunch break at the University so that there was a large presence of students around while the flash mob took place. We set up about an hour beforehand to get everything ready. The break-bell sounded and the students came out, that’s when the flash-mob started. The students were pleasantly surprised that a company was doing this. They also recognised some of the participants involved as former graduates. Since the flash-mob and the video of it that you recorded, have you had much response due to it? We have, especially in the past two weeks. We went back to the college to make some hires. The flash-mob was still fresh in their minds and they knew well who Oracle was as a result. Would you like to repeat this kind of creative initiative again with the recruitment team? Yes, absolutely! I’m over the moon with the flash-mob. My mind is working overtime now with ideas about the next things to do!

• Changing read-write permissions on my external Seagate hard drive

  I have an external hard drive (Seagate Free Agent) that I normally download files to. I have a dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 along with Windows 7-64 bit. I can read all of my files in my external HD perfectly, but when I attempt to do a download of a file to this drive, I get an "unable to write because of read only" disk error. When I attempt to change the permissions of the disk through the "Properties" bar, I still get an error that I don't have the proper permissions to change permissions. I have heard of "mounting" the disk, but I am afraid of mistakenly reformatting and destroying all the data that I have currently on that drive. How best should I safely change the permissions on that drive so that I can write and download files to the drive?? The drive is listed under /dev/sdc1.

• Why apcupsd won't see the UPS connected to the USB posrt on FreeBSD 8.0 amd64

  Hello, Recently I installed an apcusbd on a FreeBSD 8.0 amd64 box via ports system. It installed perfectly but it won't run. Here what is says in the log: FATAL ERROR in generic-usb.c at line 636 Cannot find UPS device It appeared that HID driver picked the /dev/ugen4.2 which could cause the apcusb being unable to find the device. After I had discovered this, I rebuilt the kernel and removed the hid driver. Now it just shows "ugen4.2: <Tripp Lite> at usbus4" and no uhid0 device appears. Nevertheless the problem persisted. I tried to leave the DEVICE config setting blank --- won't help. Then I specified the particular device in the config, but it did not help either. • Choosing a (browser) game environment [closed]

  I apologise in advance if this post is something you've heard a million times already or seems like a trolling attempt. I just want some advice and I'm coming up short with my own Google searches. Basically, I would like to start learning some game development in my own free time (nothing serious, just purely as a hobbyist for fun). I'd like to know what the communities opinions are on the old HTML5/Javascript v Flash argument but purely from a game development perspective. I know people say Flash is dying because of issues like SEO, memory/bandwidth usage and Apple dropping it on tablet and mobile devices, so is it worth me dedicating my free time to learning to use Flash/AS3 for game development or should I focus on HTML5/Javascript? At the moment, I'm not sure HTML5/Javascript is mature enough or has the support tools that Flash does (framework, IDE, etc) and there seems to be a lot more resources online for beginner Flash/AS3 programming. When I'm reading tutorials online for Flash/AS3 I always have it in the back of my head that I'm wasting my time because it won't be around in a few years and I should be investing that time learning HTML5/Javascript. Thoughts? Disclaimer: I'm not trying to spark a flame war or troll anyone - I believe in the right tools for the job and I don't want to waste my time learning something that won't be around in a few years.

My second idea was to let flowplayer play a file, pass the key as query string and if the filename and key don't match then reject the connection but i can't seem to find out which file it's currently playing. The only remaining idea i have is: create a list of all files the user is allowed to open and set allowReadAccess or however it was called to allow those files, but that would be clumsy due to the current infrastructure.   Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that.   Hi, I currently have a 640GB external HD that has 1 partition formatted as HSF+ Now I want to split some of the free space into a new FAT32 partition, without having to reformat the whole HD and losing all my data. I read that I'm supposed to be able to add new partitions in the Hard Disc Utility by clicking the "+" sign, without any loss of data. But in my case the "+" is not clickable and it says that this partition cannot be altered. Can anyone tell me how to proceed. Or is it impossible without reformatting the whole disc?   I have an Eee PC 1008HA. A few days before I got a virus that was preventing the Windows to boot but I could turn the computer on. I opened (disassembled) the Eee PC, then disconnected the hard disk. I connected the hard disk to another computer and copied my files. When I connected again the hard disk to my Eee PC and closed (assembled) it , I cannot turn the Eee PC on. Even when I connect the wire for charging, neither the charging light nor any other lights light up.

  Over the past few months, my Windows XP machine has slowed down to a crawl. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go from power-up to reaching a responsive state.   I use an external hard disk for backup of my mac with time machine (OS 10.5.8). I have made something wrong and I have found important folders in the recycler bin. These folders come from external hd. They are backup folders (backups.backupdb) and others. I have tried to restore them draggin and dropping. Some of them came back in the external hd in a while. For the others it takes hours to "preparing to copy" and then it has said "there's no space to copy" on ext hd. It's strange. Files are now in the recycle bin (180gb), and the ext had should have lot of free space. But it isn't really so. Ext hd is not free of space even if these files are in the bin. I ask for advices. I'm not also able to use time machine now (and i have "lost" old backups) for the same reason. Ext hd says that it has not free space.. Thanks

  Im thinking of switching to one of the macbook pro retinas with a 256gb ssd, im making the move from a 512gb hd, which at the moment is split into a 60bg windows partition (which i dont think im going to have on my new machine) and a 440gb main partition of the main partition ive got 140gb free. So all in if i disregard the 60gb windows part ive got about 200gb free so im using 300gb, which is still a bit to much, ive had this machine 4/5 yrs so its likely to be clogged with files that i no longer need, is there a tool that i can use to view my current hd and see whats taking up the most room, so i can begin to see where i can cut down ? just for a bit of background my current machine runs osx.

I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

  Need to clone and restore existing 64GB HDD onto a 256GB HDD, can't manage to gain access to the internals of this laptop. I checked with Samsung, they do not make manuals available nor will they help over the phone as to how to remove the bottom cover of this Samsung NP900X1A Laptop. They did offer to sell me a manual BUT they are out of stock for another 10-15 days. I saw the screws under the 4 rubber feet and 4 rubber grommets, all removed but the cover is still on. • Unable to create a Windows 7 system image of a failing hard drive

  The hard disk of my one year old T400 Thinkpad has started failing periodic hardware tests. I get a "Targeted Read Test Failed" error. The "SMART short self test" times out. I am now trying to create a Windows 7 System image of the hard disk but it fails without giving any specific error messages. I tried using Comodo Backup but got an error (code 101117) there as well. I have copied the important files in Dropbox but would like to take a full System backup as I have plenty of software installed on the machine. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can take a backup of the system image ?

• Repartition hard drive using Mac OS X, keep existing data

  I got a 1 TB disk a year or so ago and loaded it with some hundred of GB of data. I somehow neglected to check the file system, which turns out to be FAT-32 and thus too small for files bigger than 4 GB. So now I want to change it, without deleting the data. I thought I'd just make a new partition in the so far unused space. Then with the new partition, copy/move the data into the new partition, and then delete the old FAT-32 partition, and make the new partition bigger again... or just make a few more partitions. The critical step here is, can I make that new partition without ruining the data? The data should be fairly sequentially added to the start of the disk, but what do I know... so that's why I'm asking. Can I safely use Disk Utility for this? Any recommended file system?

  This is my step by step process on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a brand new 320 HD: Turn on Laptop Insert Xubuntu 9.1 disc Boot to CD-rom After boot has finished, I install and instance of Xubuntu on the machine After install (without any errors), I reboot the the machine On reboot, the BIOS claims to be unable to read from device What could this be? • Pc not booting, no video output, hard drive noises

  My computer suddenly stopped booting up. I just came back from a week long trip, and it was working fine before I left. When I power up the computer now, it seems to power up just fine (leds on, fans working), but then there's no output on the screen at all, and there's a noise that seems to be coming from the HD, like it is trying to read something. After the noise starts, it does 6 cycles and then stops. I'm not sure but I don't think it did this noise when the pc was still working. I tried using the onboard video card instead but it made no difference. What could be wrong with my computer?

  Possible Duplicate: How do I install Ubuntu to a USB key? How to copy an Ubuntu install from one laptop to another I have found urls to install ubuntu to a HD. But my current system has been upgraded and updated so often that it does not resemble anything on the web or on my drive disks. So giving my a url to how to install ubuntu will fail. Give me instead 'how to install my current Linux/Ubuntu based system (11.04) and all the upgrades to my external HD. Or alternately how to back up the OS into a bootable external HD.
