• Starting socket server in ruby on rails on cloud environments (heroku)

  Hi, I'm using heroku, and I can push a Ruby on Rails app just fine, I'm trying to convert this to a Socket server, basically I would need to bind to an open port, in this case, I know Heroku only does 80 22 and 443. Is it possible to bind to port 80 on those environments? Also, how would I setup the entry point for this socket server, all I know is that when script/server it boots up the app. Do I have to put the function call there? How can a socket server start instead of the rails app on top of whatever webserver heroku has.

  Hi, I've got a collection of object which contains data as follows: FromTime Duration 2010-12-28 24.0000 2010-12-29 24.0000 2010-12-30 24.0000 2010-12-31 22.0000 2011-01-02 1.9167 2011-01-03 24.0000 2011-01-04 24.0000 2011-01-05 24.0000 2011-01-06 24.0000 2011-01-07 22.0000 2011-01-09 1.9167 2011-01-10 24.0000 In the "FromTime" column, there are data "gaps" i.e. 2011-01-01 and 2011-01-08 are "missing". So what I'd like to do is to loop through a range of dates (in this instance 2010-12-28 to 2011-01-10) and "fill in" the "missing" data with a duration of 0. As I've just started with LINQ, I feel that it should be "fairly" easy but I can't quite get it right. I'm reading the book "LINQ in Action" but feel that I'm still quite a way off before I can resolve this particular issue. So any help would be much appreciated. David

• Getting data from JFrame AFTER the form is filled

  I'm trying to get data for my application from a form set in an external window (getDataWindow extends javax.swing.JFrame). The problem is that functions are executed before form is filled in. getDataWindow dataW=new getDataWindow(); dataW.setVisible(true); size=dataW.returnSize(); I've tried also adding additional boolean variable to getDataWindow getDataWindow dataW=new getDataWindow(); dataW.setVisible(true); while(!dataW.checkIfReady()){wait();} size=dataW.returnSize(); But it makes also the window wait (it appears but it's black inside and nothing happens). I think i should create some threads for that - I've tried to call a window making function getDataWindow in java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable()) but I had to initialize dataW earlier so dataW.checkIfReady() could be called, so it is a catch 22.

  Lets say I have a 7 by 7 neighborhood around a pixel that looks like this 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 and I wanna filter the above by replacing the pixel p by the average of those pixels whose value lie in the range -10<=p_value <=10. I am new to image processing and I think in this case p_value is 25 and around 25 that are many pixel values in that range but don't exactly know to construct a convolution filter out of it.

  I just took my first baby step today into real scientific computing today when I was shown a data set where the smallest file is 48000 fields by 1600 rows (haplotypes for several people, for chromosome 22). And this is considered tiny. I write Python, so I've spent the last few hours reading about HDF5, and Numpy, and PyTable, but I still feel like I'm not really grokking what a terabyte-sized data set actually means for me as a programmer. For example, someone pointed out that with larger data sets, it becomes impossible to read the whole thing into memory, not because the machine has insufficient RAM, but because the architecture has insufficient address space! It blew my mind. What other assumptions have I been relying in the classroom that just don't work with input this big? What kinds of things do I need to start doing or thinking about differently? (This doesn't have to be Python specific.)

  I have two identically-sized numpy.array objects (both one-dimensional), one of which contains a list of starting index positions, and the other of which contains a list of ending index positions (alternatively you could say I have a list of starting positions and window lengths). In case it matters, the slices formed by the starting and ending positions are guaranteed to be non-overlapping. I am trying to figure out how to use these starting and ending positions to form an index for another array object, without having to use a loop.   Hi folks! I'm trying to use temp tables to speed up my MySQL 4.1.22-standard database and what seems like a simple operation is causing me all kinds of issues. My code is below.... CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE nonDerivativeTransaction_temp (accession_number varchar(30), transactionDateValue date)) TYPE=HEAP; INSERT INTO nonDerivativeTransaction_temp VALUES( SELECT accession_number, transactionDateValue FROM nonDerivativeTransaction WHERE transactionDateValue = "2010-06-15"); SELECT * FROM nonDerivativeTransaction_temp; The original table (nonDerivativeTransaction) has two fields, accession_number (varchar(30)) and transactionDateValue (date). Apparently I am getting an issue with the first two statements but I can't seem to nail down what it is. Any help would be appreciated. Amy D.

• Can you call compiled JRuby classes from java?

  So I came up with the general idea to write some code in JRuby, then access all the classes via Java. I have no idea if this is at all possible but I wanted to ask anyway. Lets say I have some JRuby code: class adder def addme return 22 end end If I compiled this with jrubyc is there any way I could then possibly do something like this in java: import adder; class anything { void testMethod() { adder a = new adder(); int x = a.addme(); } } After looking at it now it sort of makes me think that Java will have zero idea what sort of item test addme is going to return so that might not work.   I am trying to implement a paging system that displays nearby page numbers as well as pages at each extreme. For example, if the user is on page 20 of 40, the following links should be displayed: 1, 2 ... 18, 19, [20], 21, 22 ... 39, 40.   From programming pearls, it is known that array[1...n] has heap property if for all 2<=i<=n x[i/2]<=x[i]. When I compile this code it shows me at last line that it is not heap. Maybe because the index starts from 1 and we don't pay attention to index 0, yes?

  What I'm trying to do is iterate through an array in chunks, alternating the direction of iteration from chunk to chunk. Confused? So am I. For example, if I want to loop thru an array with 25 elements, but I want to do it in this order: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, what would be the most efficient way of doing this? I'm looking for something scalable because the array I'm working with now is actually 225 elements and I want to traverse it in 15 element chunks, but that may change at some point. So far, the only method I've figured out that actually works is to hard-wire the iteration order into a second array and then iterate through that in the normal way to get the indices for the original array. But that sucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi experts, I am trying to read an excel 2003 file which consist of 62 columns and 2000 rows and then draw 2d dendrogram from 2000 pattern of 2 categories of a data as my plot in matlab.
