• Custom firmware for Asus WL-520g

  What custom firmware works with Asus WL-520g? (Note this is not 520gU, 520gC, etc.) I failed to flash it with Tomato (Tomato_1_28_ND.zip) - the admin UI does not accept the file, and when trying to tftp the file as adviced for 520gU all I get is this: Transfering file tomato-ND.trx to server in octet mode... Error occurred during the file transfer (Error code = 0): Error in SendPacket() call. I just saved the router form rather unsuccessful flash to DD-WRT (after few hours the router fell into coma), and I'd like to keep it as a backup should the new one die or whatever. (Unfortunately the stock firmware does not support WOL.)

• Why can't I copy files from a mac to a samba share?

  I have a share set up on my ubuntu 10.04 box, and the mac can see it, connect to it, and sort of write to it. When I try to copy a whole tree to the share, I get an error saying "The operation cannot be completed because you don't have access to some of the items". If I zip the directory, and copy that over, it succeeds. Any explanation? I am able to successfully start tomcat on port 8080 as a standalong thing. Meaning I go to command prompt and type startup.bat and it starts up successfully. Question How can I resolve this and what are the things I should be troubleshooting for?

• DVD playback with Windows Media Player 11 works fine, but when copied to HDD and then played back, t

  I have several DVDs with short documentaries on it. Since the notebook I'm using (a Dell Latitude E6400) has only one DVD drive, and I might play back those short movies very often, I thought of copying them to the HDD and playing them back from there. However, I've run into a problem, namely stuttering audio. Problem description: When I play back these movies directly from DVD (with Windows Media Player 11 under Windows Vista), everything works fine. Smooth video, no significant audio problems (only the occasional click). But as soon as I copy any of these DVDs to the HDD and try to play them back from there (e.g. using the wmpdvd://drive/title/chapter?contentdir=path protocol, I get stuttering audio — audio playback sounds like a machine gun for a third of a second or so, approx. every 8 seconds. I have tried converting the VOB files from the DVD to another format (ie. ripping), but that resulted in a noticeable downgrade of picture quality. Therefore I thought it best to keep the files in their original format, if possible. Still, I suspect that the stuttering audio is due to some (de-)muxing problem, and that changing the file format might help. (After all, video playback is fine; therefore I don't think that the hardware is too slow for playback.) Only thing is, I don't know how to convert the VOB files to another Windows Media Player-compatible format without quality loss. I hope someone can help me, or give me further pointers on things I could try out to get HDD playback to work without the problem described. Some things I've tried so far, without any success: VOB2MPG, in order to convert the .vob file to a .mpg file. But that changes only the A/V container, not the content. No re-encoding takes place at all. Re-encoding with MPlayer/MEncoder. Lots of quality loss there, and I frankly haven't got the time to test all possible settings combinations available. Disabling all plug-ins, equalizers, etc. in Windows Media Player. Disabling all hardware acceleration on the audio playback device. Further info on the VOB files I'm trying to playback: The video format is MPEG ES, PAL 720x576 pixels @ 24/25 frames per second. The sound stream is uncompressed PCM, 16-bit stereo @ 48kHz. (Might it help if I somehow re-encoded the sound stream at a lower resolution, or as an MP3? If so, how would I do this without changing the video stream?) P.S.: I am limited to using Windows Media Player (11). (I previously tried MPlayer btw., but the video playback quality was surprisingly bad.)

  I back up my code with svn. I have project files in there however i ignore selected things. I also ignore jpg, ogg, etc. Right now i would like to backup everything. However the zip result is 1gb (i have a lot of code). I know i can cut down the filesize by 60%+ Is there an app i can use which will backup everything except the bin and obj folders? perhaps keep ogg, json, jpg files but ignore .svn or .pdb files?

• How to remove uninstalled programs from Notification Area

  For some reason I had 2 instances of Apache running, and I have no idea how. I also had two instances of ApacheMonitor.exe showing in the "Notification Area Icons" place when you right click on your taskbar and go to properties. To fix the multiple instance issue, I deleted Apache completely and uninstalled the service (I did not use the .msi, I install from a .zip). Anyways, Everything from Apache is gone except the two things in the Notification Area Icon page. Does anyone know how to remove these two icons? I have completely uninstalled Apache, cleaned my registry with CCleaner, and rebooted. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Despite what the picture says, I do NOT have Apache installed, and it is not running.

I'm backing up to a local NAS and I'm getting this error: Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options Check your backup Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could be because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400 MB of free space and try again.   Hi, i have ESXi 4.0 installed so i want to install all patch bundles available using vihostupdate.pl script from vm perl sdk. I can install it by typing: vihostupdate.pl -server 192.168.1.177 -b "C:\Documents and Settings\dawids\Pulpit\patche\ESXi-4.0.0-update01.zip" -i then patch 2,3 etc. But I would like to install them all at once, is there such possibility? Maybe there is possible to use vihostupdate patch1 then vihostupdate patch2... and after all patching reboot instead rebooting after 1 patch bundle. How is it working?

• Deploy Windows 7 Backup set to Windows 8

  Situation: We have a laptop here that's completely fubar. I.e: The hard drive is filled to the brim with bad sectors. Luckily, backups have been made using the built-in Windows 7 backup feature. This produces folders named Backup Set 2012-11-09 003009, containing folders like Backup Files 2012-11-09 003009, containing zip-files like Backup files 1, 2, 3,... Our brand new laptop comes with Windows 8. Now: Can we, using the standard back-up and restore feature in Windows 8, restore all the documents, music, etc. using the Windows 7 backup files? Thanks. (FYI: We also took a normal backup of all the documents just to be sure of course. I'm just curious what would happen. I would test it out, but the new laptop hasn't arrived yet and I wanted to make sure my efforts would not be in vain.)

  Hi all, when I try to copy any file with scp on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from another machine I get this error: scp [email protected]:/home/me/file.zip . Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work. • Installing a bundled set of multiple apps automatically and silently

  Hi all, When I install Windows, I like to deploy a set of the same apps (for example, Firefox, Chrome, Trillian, 7-Zip, etc.). I'd prefer to have a way of doing it all in one sitting, and I seem to remember there being a way of bundling all the installers. I was able to find two, though neither of them (Almeza MultiSet, WPIW) look like what I was thinking of. Can anyone recommend other ways of running a whole set of installers at once? Thanks! • Gotomeeting MSI needs elevated privs?

  Typically I can deploy MSIs with no issue, but the Gotomeeting one refuses to install. SCE lists it as pending and AD just attempts to install it, gives up, and never tries again. When I tried running it by double-clicking its icon, it told me "needs to run with elevated privs." I don't see how I can get AD or SCE to run it with these higher privs. I can run it by using an elevated command prompt and running msiexec from there. The MSI is the one labeled "GoToMeeting MSI Installer (ZIP)" from here: http://support.citrixonline.com/GoToMeeting/search?search=msi Any ideas? I run an environment where the users are non-admins and would love to be able to upgrade this centrally.

  I've been using Download Master on Windows for years and what I liked most about it is that this program can automatically put downloaded files into directories by download date: /Downloads | |--/2012_06_28 | | | |--a.zip | |--b.pdf | ... | |--/2012_06_29 | | | |--c.txt | ... ... I'm looking for something similar for Linux. Is there any free download manager that can do this? I have tried KGet and uGet but they both seem to lack this feature.   I have the following use case: There's some data from my PC I want to periodically back-up online I own some hosting, so I want to use that for the backups, don't want to pay to another backup service I want to encrypt my data locally prior to moving it to the server I have no problem writing scripts to automate the process (say, periodically generate the backup and upload by FTP to my server), but my main question is about step 3 - the encryption: which way is recommended to encrypt my files (say, collected into a .ZIP) prior to uploading to the server? P.S. TrueCrypt seems popular but it's not quite what I'm looking for, since I don't want the files to be constantly encrypted here on my PC.

• Why can't I copy a 7 GB file to an external USB HD with 120 GB free?

  Yes, why can't I? I was stashing away some old photography backup zips last night. I could copy 4 of my 1 GB backup zips to my external USB connected hard-drive when I got the error message "Cannot copy file. Not enough free space." (sort of) for a zip of roughly 7 GB. But there are 120 GB free. Why is this? EDIT: Clarification - the files that I could copy was smaller than 4 GB. The failing one was 7 GB. The cause seems to be the FAT32 4 GB limit.

  Hi Guys, AMD PC Motherboard - ASUS M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from ASUS website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

  Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista have this deal where zone information is preserved in downloaded files to NTFS partitions, such that it blocks certain files in certain applications until you "unblock" the files. So for example if you download a zip file of source code to try something out, every file will display this in the security settings of the file properties "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" Along with an "Unblock" button. Some programs don't care, but Visual Studio will refuse to load projects in solutions until they've been unblocked. While it's not terribly difficult to go to every project file and unblock it individually, it's a pain. And it does not appear you can unblock multiple selected files simultaneously. Is there any way to unblock all files in a directory without having to go to them all individually? I know you can turn this off globally for all new files but let's say I don't want to do that

The program is old but the one feature we desperately need in a database program is to be able to enter multiple criteria at one time for more of a "one time" extraction of the data meeting all the various criteria entered in what I call a "criteria string". An example may be extracting only those records with zip codes matching (67893, 54235, 54323, 54201, 54302, 54303, 54301, 67894, 67895). Another set of criteria might be to omit records, not equal to, one type of criteria in one field and also extract records matching criteria in another field. So we would want records "not equal to" in one field, but whose information equals requested information in another field.

  I try to consolidate old drives to new ones of larger capacity. Sometimes files have been renamed, but are otherwise identical. Sometimes an old directory has just a few more files in it than a newer directory with the same name. Sometimes a file has the same name but the size differs. So I often find myself asking the question: Are there any files on this old drive or directory that I haven't already copied to the new drive? I just want to know that I have the files, I don't want to try and sync stuff automatically (Syncing tools tend to just sync, creating duplicate folder structures and other problems, so I prefer to do it by hand). Basically, if an old drive has a file called "foo.bar" ten directories deep, and my new big drive has an identical file called "oldstuff.zip" in the root, I just want a "yes you have it" or "no, unique files exist". Is there a free tool, a script or a quick and easy method (Mac/Unix or Windows) to get the answer?

  Hello I have a broken file. It was encrypted(by me) and I did get it unencrypted though I can not remember if it is tar or tar.gz. I believe whichever one it is though is corrupted. I've tried both methods and everything else I could think of for what kind of archive format it could be(7z, zip, etc) and it errors out. What is a possible course of action to take here? The files on it are not extremely important though they are irreplaceable. Are there any tools out there for "fixing" tar or tar.gz formats?

  I have a client whose site (not one i developed) is infected by a trojan/malicious code. I have asked him to send me the dirty files in a zip but either gmail or unzipping is blocking them. I've tried text files and word files, and i'm suspecting many different file types will be blocked the same way, either by my mail client, anti-malware software, browser etc. (which is normal). Do you know a way he could share those lines so i can read them and do some research about the malicious source code? • Is it possible to use WebMatrix with pure IIS?

  I'd like to check out WebMatrix for publishing our site to IIS automatically (right now, I have to zip it up, copy it out, Remote Desktop into the server, unzip it, etc). However, every example I can find on how to setup WebMatrix involves Azure, or using a .publishsettings file that you'd get from your hosting provider. I'm curious if I can publish to a normal, every day IIS server running on Windows Server 2008. So far, all I've done to the IIS server is install Web Deploy, which I believe is the protocol that WebMatrix uses to publish. When I enter the Remote Site Settings screen, I select Enter settings. I select Web Deploy as the protocol, type in my NT domain credentials (I'm an Admin on that server). I put in the site URL for the Site Name and Destination URL. When I click Validate Connection, I get: Am I doing something wrong, or is this just not possible to do?

• Notepad++ shortcuts not getting copied to the second computer where I want to replicate my settings

  In Notepad++, there's a way to assign your custom shortcuts by going to Run - Modify Shortcut/Delete Command... This brings up the Shortcut Mapper I set up my custom shortcuts on Computer 1 I then installed Notepad++ with the same install settings and plugins on Computer 2 I then created a zip archive of my Notepad++ folder in Program Files on Computer 1 I overwrote the Notepad++ folder in Program Files on Computer 2 with this archive My custom shortcuts did not come across. I thought that the shortcuts were saved in C:\Program Files\Notepad++\shortcuts.xml I compared C:\Program Files\Notepad++\shortcuts.xml from Computer 1 with the same file on Computer 2 and the two files are identical. Why then are the shortcuts not coming across to Computer 2? Computer 1 is Windows XP Computer 2 is Windows Server 2008 R2
