• SQL 2005 Express Edition - Install new instance

  Looking for a way to programatically, or otherwise, add a new instance of SQL 2005 Express Edition to a system that already has an instance installed. Traditionally, you run Micrsoft's installer like I am in the command line below and it does the trick. Executing the command in my installer is not the issue, it's more a matter of dragging around the 40 MBs of MS-SQL installer that I don't need if they have SQL Express already installed. This is what my installer currently executes: SQLEXPR32.EXE /qb ADDLOCAL=ALL INSTANCENAME=<instancename> SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=<password> SQLAUTOSTART=1 DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 I don't need assistance with launching this command, rather the appropriate way to add a new instance of SQL 2005 Express without actually running the full installer again. I'd go into great detail about why I want to do this but I'd simply bore everyone. Suffice to say, having this ability to create a new instance without the time it takes to reinstall SQL Express etc. would greatly assist me for the deployment of my application and it's installer. If makes any difference to anyone, I'm using a combination of NSIS and Advanced Installer for this installation project.

• ps: Clean way to only get parent processes?

  I use ps ef and ps rf a lot. Here is a sample output for ps rf: PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 3476 pts/0 S 0:00 su ... 3477 pts/0 S 0:02 \_ bash 8062 pts/0 T 1:16 \_ emacs -nw ... 15733 pts/0 R+ 0:00 \_ ps xf 15237 ? S 0:00 uwsgi ... 15293 ? S 0:00 \_ uwsgi ... 15294 ? S 0:00 \_ uwsgi ... And today I needed to retrieve only the master process of uwsgi in a script (so I want only 15237 but not 15293 nor 15294). As of today, I tried some ps rf | grep -v ' \\_ '... but I would like a cleaner way. I also came accross another solution from unix.com's forums: ps xf | sed '1d' | while read pid tty stat time command ; do [ -n "$(echo $command | egrep '^uwsgi')" ] && echo $pid ; done But still a lot of pipes and ugly tricks. Is there really no ps option or cleaner tricks (maybe using awk) to accomplish that?

• Plesk Postfix SMTP 550 5.7.1 "Command rejected" for one external sender

  My server is rejecting emails from one external sender. I suspect this might be misconfiguration on the sending server, but I'm not sure from these error messages. The non-delivery report message the sender gets contains this text: #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Command rejected> #SMTP# I also see this message in /var/messages at about the same time as the rejection message was sent, though I'm not sure if it's actually related: Nov 29 12:29:28 localhost postfix/smtpd[31829]: sql_sqlite3 plugin: no result found I'm using Plesk 10.4.4 Update #47, Centos 6.2, Postfix 2.8.4-11100615 on my mail server. This is only happening for one sender so far, but I found a Google result on experts-exchange.com which seemed to identify the same problem and with the same sending domain. This was posted back in June, and currently has no answers, so even if I was a paying customer it wouldn't be answered. (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Q_27760746.html) The generating server is bigfish.com. What I need to determine is if this is a problem on my server or a problem with bigfish.com. Is there more information I can find in config files, logs, etc. to figure this out?

• BAT file will not run from Task Scheduler but will from Command Line

  I'm trying to run a BAT script from Task Scheduler in Windows 2008 R2 and it runs for 3 seconds and then stops. It says it successfully completes but I know it doesn't. I can run this script from the command line directly, and it runs just fine. The bat file I'm running actually deletes files older than 7 days using "forfiles" then I'm mapping a network drive, moving the files across the network using robocopy, and then closing the network connection. I have taken the network and copy options out of the file and it still does the same thing. • Dell Perc 6i with FreeBSD 8.1 errors with mfi0: COMMAND xxxxxxxx TIMEOUT AFTER xxx SECONDS

  We've recently bought two Dell PowerEdge R710 servers with Perc 6i controllers and 6x 135GB SAS Drives. We'd done some pretty extensive testing on a Dell PowerEdge R510 server with a Perc 6i and 4x 135GB SAS Drives running FreeBSD 8.1 for it's wonderful ZFS support and mfiutil. We hadn't had any problems with the R510 and had got to a point where we where happy with the performance of ZFS. Since running FreeBSD 8.1 on the R710 we've been getting errors from the RAID controller. mfi0: COMMAND 0xffffff80005d1770 TIMEOUT AFTER 6178 SECONDS This usually brings the system to a stand still. But it doesn't always happen, and performs very well up until it does happen. We've been running the disk as 3 mirrored drives striped in ZFS. So far we've noticed that running the drives with RAID10 on the RAID seems to work without errors (still testing). At first I thought hardware error as we'd been running FreeBSD on the R510 with the same controller without any issues. But both R710 have the same issue. All controllers are running the same firmware.

  I'm trying to setup email notifications for my continuous integration server. • Embed album art in OGG through command line in linux

  I want to convert my music from flac to ogg, and currently oggenc does that perfectly except for album art. Metaflac can output album art, however there seems to be no command line tool to embed album art into ogg. MP3Tag and EasyTag are able to do it, and there is a specification for it here which calls for the image to be base64 encoded. However so far I have been unsuccessful in being able to take an image file, converting it to base64 and embedding it into an ogg file. If I take a base64 encoded image from an ogg file that already has the image embedded, I can easily embed it into another image using vorbiscomment: vorbiscomment -l withimage.ogg > textfile vorbiscomment -c textfile noimage.ogg My problem is taking something like a jpeg and converting it to base64. Currently I have: base64 --wrap=0 ./image.jpg Which gives me the image file converted to base64, using vorbiscomment and following the tagging rules, I can embed that into an ogg file like so: echo "METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE=$(base64 --wrap=0 ./image.jpg)" > ./folder.txt vorbiscomment -c textfile noimage.ogg However this gives me an ogg whose image does not work properly. I noticed when comparing the base64 strings that all properly embedding pictures have a header line but all the base64 strings I generate are lacking this header. Further analysis of the header: od -c header.txt 0000000 \0 \0 \0 003 \0 \0 \0 \n i m a g e / j p 0000020 e g \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 0000040 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 \0 035 332 0000052 Which follows the spec given above. Notice 003 corresponds to front cover and image/jpeg is the mime type. So finally, my question is, how can I base64 encode a file and generate this header along with it for embedding into an ogg file?

  i need the commands to list these things for a class but for the life of me i cannot figure it out if anyone could offer any insight on how to get so specific with the egrep command or just answer the questions it would be highly appreciated some i have already figured out but if they look wrong any corrections may help too List all words that have the letter a followed immediately by the letter z. egrep {a,}{z,} words List all words that have the letter a followed sometime later by the letter z (there must be at least one letter in between). List all words that start with two capital letters followed immediately by at least one lower case letter. List all words with two consecutive a’s or i’s or u’s. Use {2} to denote “two consecutive” and the pipe character, |, to denote “or”. egrep [a|i|o] {2} words List all words that contain a q where the q is not immediately followed by a u. For instance, queen should not be in your list but Iraqi should be. List all entries in the file that contain at least one non-letter.

• Best way to execute a command after Linux system halt

  Problem: The SSDs in our servers require a power cycle (i.e. off/on, not reset/warm reboot) after a firmware update. Thoughts: Using 'ipmitool chassis power cycle' I can cycle the server's power. However this would cut the power while the system is still running, filesystems are mounted, etc. What I basically want is a delayed power cycle so the system has a change to halt. But I guess that would have to be implemented on the server's IPMI board, so it's not really an option. My initial idea was to dynamically create a ramdisk containing the tool and libs and somehow integrate that into the halt process. I saw there's a /etc/init.d/halt, so that would be my starting point. Although I believe the kernel at some point in the shutdown process starts to kill off remaining processes. So I'm not even sure if that's a viable way. Question: What would be the best way to execute ipmitool (or any other command), after the system has halted and all regular filesystems are unmounted?

• Split MPEG video from command line?

  I have a homemade DVD that I'm effectively trying to insert chapters into and rearrange - the original author burned it as one long chapter, and I'd like to rip it into smaller pieces and re-encode it into a new DVD. I ripped the DVD with the following command: mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/sr2 -dumpstream -dumpfile raw.vob I'm running Gentoo Linux with mplayer version 1.0-rc2_p20090731 (the latest available in Portage). I have a list of times that the chapters are supposed to span (for example 30:11-33:25), so my first thought was to rip the entire DVD and use mpgtx to cut out certain pieces of the file. My issue is that running mpgtx -i on the file reports quite a few timestamp jumps: Time stamps jumped from 59.753789 to 0.001622 at position 1d29800 Time stamps jumped from 204963823030450.343750 to 31.165900 at position 2d4f800 Time stamps jumped from 60.077878 to 0.001622 at position 43cc000 Time stamps jumped from 60.024233 to 0.001622 at position 65c5000 Time stamps jumped from 204963823068631.718750 to 52.549244 at position 7fd1000 I've tried to fix the indexes using: mencoder raw.vob -oac copy -ovc copy -forceidx -o fixed.vob -of mpeg But mpgtx will still report timestamp issues. My immediate question: is there a way to take the ripped movie I have and correct its timestamps so I can cut it with mpgtx? If I can get that one issue out of the way, building the rest of the DVD will be smooth sailing. If it's not possible to fix the timestamps on this file: is there a better way to rip small chunks of the DVD into separate files for recompilation later? I'd very much like this to be done on Linux, and it'd be even better if I could script it somehow (feed in a list of start and end positions, or start times and durations, and get out a series of ripped files). If need be, I also have a Mac OS X machine available, but no Windows. Edit: I wound up finding another solution involving HandBrake and ffmpeg (with help from this question), but the question stands. Edit again: Turns out my other solution didn't quite work - the audio desynchronized by about five seconds, in about half of my cut mpgs - so I'm back to square one. Anyone?

• Concatenating ogg video files from the command line

  Okay. I've got a few ogg files I've created using a desktop recording tool. I've transcoded them using ffmpeg once (mainly to clip out the beginnings and the ends). Now, I have 3 such files which I want to concatenate into a single .ogv file. I tried using oggCat, it crashed with some kind of error (I tried concatenating a file to itself using oggCat and that failed too leading me to believe that my distro is shipping a broken version of the package). Simply cating the files works but I can't seek which is not cool. mencoder run like this mencoder -ovc lavc -oac lavc file1.ogv file2.ogv file3.ogv -o complete.ogv. It transcodes the files into an avi and clips off a little of the 3 videos. So, how do I do this? Update 1: My current workaround is to transcode the 3 files into .mpg using ffmpeg, then cating them together and then transcoding them back into ogv. Update 2: PiTiVi works for this kind of thing but I need something from the command line that I can automate and script.

• How do I create an MBR on a USB stick using DD command line tool

  Okay I'm trying to create a BOOTABLE Windows7 image on a USB key from a Mac running Lion. My image is .iso format. I tried: sudo dd if=/Users/myusername/Win7.iso of=/dev/disk1 bs=1m And this succeeded in writing the files, except in DISK UTILITY on the mac, it shows the partition type as GUID Partition Table and not 'Master Boor Record'. Booting the key on my Vista computer yields the error "No boot sector on USB Device' From what I can tell, bs=1m in the DD command should have left 1 Megabyte for the boot sector, but for some reason this area of the USB Key is not set up correctly so that it will boot How can I fix this, or correctly use dd to write a bootable cd image such that it is now a bootable usb drive? Note: in the instructions I read about, they recommended renaming my Win7.iso to Win7.dmg before using DD, which made absolutely no sense to me, so I didn't do it. I could try with that step now, but it takes 1.99 hours to write the image to the USB drive so there is a huge penalty to trial and error here. Thank you.

• How to handle sh: fetch: command not found

  Okay, I'm a noobie. I know how to build and compose a website, but I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to servers and server commands, etc. I've recently had a problem with all of my sites on our servers going down all at once and then I have to go in and reboot the server for them to come up again. At first this was annoying, but now it is becoming agonizing as it now takes 3-4 reboots for the websites to come back up. I contacted support for my hosting, but they are not being very helpful. They just keep telling me what the issue might be and basically telling me that I'm going to have to look into it and figure it out, which really isn't possible since I know nothing. Anyway, here are the things they said were possible reasons: They said I have "strange logs" in my Apache webserver log, error: sh: fetch: command not found. My php.ini memory limit is: 256M which is very high. It should be 32M or 64M. Server is reaching Max Clients, meaning we have more than 150 visitors at a time. (They supposedly "fixed" this, but the sites/server are still going down) I have some Wordpress sites with plugins getting errors like: PHP Warning: pack(): Type H: illegal hex digit G in... PHP Fatal error: Cannot use object of type stdClass as array in... PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in... PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function file_exists() in... PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' I know that's a lot, but I really am at wits end and have no idea what to do now. If anyone could maybe give me some advice or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!   First of all let me tell you my knowledge in managing server and configuring script is very basic. Now I am trying to setup a server for my personal use. My server is up and running in Centos 6.5 with PHP, MySql and ISPConfig. I felt that even PHP is installed it needs some configuration for a standard web server. I searched on and found some 'configure' command but none working. The reason they did not have a specific step by step guidance on how to do this. Can somebody help me to configure PHP in a standard way? Thanks in advance. Some more detail, as required - 1. I did not install PHP from source. 2. Yes, I want some standard modules to be enabled in PHP 3. I also want to know do I need to change some settings on default? I do have a managed VPS, so do you suggest me to copy php.ini from that VPS to new dedicated server so all required settings which is working fine for me to be copied here also? Thanks

In changing the date on this computer server running as VM is not working. Our messages log show messages like thise ntpd[3496]: time correction of -1098 seconds exceeds sanity limit (1000); set clock manually to the correct UTC time. Our server is now about 20 minutes out. It seams like our server has not been updating the time correctly for a few days. • How come Win+R prompt can open Python when it's not in my path?

  When I use the run prompt in Windows XP Professional (Win+R), and type python.exe or python, it works and greets me with the python prompt. However, when I start a cmd window, and then type python.exe or python, it doesn't find it. This is what I expect, as the Python directory (for me, I:\Python31\) is not in my PATH. How come, then, that if I type python.exe in the Win+R prompt, it works? Edit: here is a partial output of SET, I removed most irrelevant entries, I'm not sure why is it useful, apart from the PATH variable which I already said doesn't include the Python directory. If you need a particular variable other than these, please ask. • running a command as root with /bin/su and without gives different results

  Some background: I have a machine with SLES 11 installed. I am running a bash script that one of its lines is /bin/su $USER -c SOME_CMD. Unfortunately, the SOME_CMD that comes after the -c keeps failing, no matter if USER=root or any different user. However, if /bin/su $USER -c part is omitted then everything runs smoothly. Moreover, I have run the script on RHEL5 and it worked fine. Anyway, my question is why does it happen? If it is a permissions problems then why when I run this as root with /bin/su and without I get different results? P.S. apologize if somebody else has asked it before, I have done many googling and got nothing that satisfies. Thanks in advance, n00bInCpp EDIT Okay, I figured it out, I hope so. Instead of running /bin/su I used /user/bin/sudo -u $MY_USER_1 MY_ENV_VAR="/home/user1" SOME_CMD. I don't understand why I have to use sudo, though. I am used to run a command as a different user using su and not worrying about permissions problems, but I guess it doesn't work like that on SLES 11/SuSE. • Command or tool to display list of connections to a Windows file share

  Is there a Windows command or tool that can tell me what users or computers are connected to a Windows fileshare? Here's why I'm looking for this: I've run into issues in the past where our deployment team has deployed BizTalk applications to one of our environments using the wrong bindings, leaving us with two receive locations pointing to the same file share (i.e. both dev and test servers point to dev receive location uri). When this occurs, the two environments in question tend to take turns processing the files received (meaning if I am attempting to debug something in one environment and the other environment has picked the file up, it looks as if my test file has disappeared into thin air). We have several different environments, plus individual developer machines, and I'd rather not have to check each individually to find the culprit. I'm looking for a quick way to detect what locations are connected to the share once I notice my test files vanishing. If I can determine the connections that are invalid, I can go directly to the person responsible for that environment and avoid the time it takes to randomly ask around. Or if the connections appear to be correct, I can go directly to troubleshooting where in the process the message gets lost. Any suggestions?

  Client : OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5ubuntu1 (Ubuntu 9.04) Server : OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5 (Proxmox 2.6.24-7-pve) I use SSH to execute commands remotely on the server (module check_by_ssh of Nagios). But SSH hangs from time to time when trying to execute commands. I can log to the server via SSH but not executing a simple 'ls'. And it seems to block from all clients from the same IP address. Authentication is not the problem, may it be made by SSH keys or password. ssh -l root -p 2222 server.domain.tld 'ls' Here the client debug info debug1: Entering interactive session. debug2: callback start debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0 debug1: Sending environment. debug3: Ignored env ORBIT_SOCKETDIR *** skipping approx 40 env var ignored debug1: Sending command: ls debug2: channel 0: request exec confirm 1 It hangs there. Then after a random time, it works again (without doing anything). Killing all sshd process on the server seems to work too. It works from a Putty. I saw that some people had trouble like this due to ISP reverse DNS problem, but it does not seem to be the case here. It can work for hours and then not work for half an hour or so. What could explain this behaviour ?

• connecting to a network using route command

  I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers.
