  • Running gdb on Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 Install

    Hi all, I am trying to run gdb to debug my Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 install and having a couple of problems: It seems like the package installed by Ubuntu for Apache2 does not include debugging symbols; is there a different version of the package I should be using for developing/debugging? When I try to run gdb, I get an error that looks to be caused by some missing environment variable. Are there additional options I should pass to "run" to get this to work?   • tomcat 5.5 startup script on Ubuntu server

    Can any one share their Tomcat startup script I am looking for a tomcat start up script on a Ubuntu machine. My Ubuntu is 10.04 server. The tomcat is 5.5.30. It is in /opt/apache-tomcat-5.5.31 I tried a script #!/bin/bash # # tomcat # # chkconfig: # description: Start up the Tomcat servlet engine. # Source function library. . /lib/lsb/init-functions RETVAL=$? But the same script works if I do /etc/init.d/tomcat start or /etc/init.d/tomcat stop I have done update-rc.d tomcat defaults as it is a Ubuntu server but on reboot all of this fails to work.

  • Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

    I am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). If it matters, the Microsoft Filtering Platform is checked under extensions. Added this switch to my Ubuntu guest. I also tried a different wireless card (Aethros 9285) same issue. Connecting through my wired card works just fine (assume that I select that card, and I am wired in of course). Making it a legacy network adapter does not fix the issue. Ubuntu can see this connection, but is unable to connect to it. What follows is what I attempted to do to get Ubuntu to connect: Start and restart the network manager Restart the machine Verify that it could in fact see the adapter (resulted in device not ready a few times) How can I get this to work properly?

    I have a Compaq Presario CQ61, instaled Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 on it. It works great except the PPPoE connection in Ubuntu, when i dial in Windows my download speed reach up to 91 Mb, rebooted in Ubuntu, downloaded same file from the same server with a speed of maximum 3 Mb, cheked in Windows again 80 - 90 Mb constant. I can't figure what slow's the internet connection in Ubuntu. Anyone has an ideea on this problem ? (NO iptables configured, NO HTB, CBQ ...etc configured) . Thank you

  • How can I manually install pecl_http on Ubuntu 9.10?

    This is essentially a repost of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4159369/ubuntu-9-04-pecl-extension-downloads-but-does-not-install. Hoping maybe someone can help me here. I've done this: sudo apt-get install php-pear sudo apt-get install php5-dev sudo apt-get install libcurl3-openssl-dev which installs fine. However, the next step: sudo pecl install pecl_http Doesn't install the extension, but merely downloads it. There are no error messages. So I have unpacked it and built it myself per http://php.net/manual/en/install.pecl.phpize.php Essentially: cd pecl_http phpize ./configure make make install I also make test'd to check all ok - and it failed one test: HttpRequest, which is kind of fundamental to this package. And indeed this doesn't work: $r = new HttpRequest('http://www.google.com'); $r->send; echo $r->getResponseCode(); No request is sent, the response code is zero, but no errors either. How can I get this damn thing installed? Is this a bug? Am I doing something wrong? Any alternatives, workarounds? Help appreciated. Thanks

  • MySQL open files limit

    This question is similar to set open_files_limit, but there was no good answer. I need to increase my table_open_cache, but first I need to increase the open_files_limit. I set the option in /etc/mysql/my.cnf: open-files-limit = 8192 This worked fine in my previous install (Ubuntu 8.04), but now in Ubuntu 10.04, when I start the server up, open_files_limit is reported to be 1710. That seems like a pretty random number for the limit to be clipped to. Anyway, I tried getting around it by adding a line like this in /etc/security/limits.conf: mysql hard nofile 8192 I also tried adding this to the pre-start script in mysql's upstart config (/etc/init/mysql.conf): ulimit -n 8192 Obviously neither of those things worked. So where is the hoop that has been added between Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04 through which I must jump in order to actually increase the open files limit?

  • 'pip install carbon' looks like it works, but pip disagrees afterward

    I'm trying to use pip to install the package carbon, a package related to statistics collection. When I run pip install carbon, it looks like everything works. However, pip is unconvinced that the package is actually installed. (This ultimately causes trouble because I'm using Puppet, and have a rule to install carbon using pip, and when puppet asks pip "is this package installed?" it says "no" and it reinstalls it again.) How do I figure out what's preventing pip from recognizing the success of this installation?   • Gmail notification in Ubuntu's native mail icon.

    So, new Ubuntu 10.04 up and running. Playing with the interface eventually got me curious about something. Up until now, I've only used the chat and broadcasting functionalities of the mail icon in Ubuntu's top panel, mostly because I take care of my mail on firefox so I don't need one more program (empathy) running on my poor little netbook. I'm currenty using gnome-gmail to set gmail as my default mail client in Ubuntu. But, when I click on the "Set up mail" item, inside the Panel's Mail icon, it simply brings up empathy. My question is: Is it possible (in any way whatsoever) to have my gmail notifications up there, configured so that clicking it will just take me to a gmail tab in Firefox? (instead of opening up empathy) This is really just some frivolous interest of mine, nothing important. Right now I'm using check-gmail to notify me of new mail, but the panel is really cramped up on my netbook, so it'd be nice to free up some room by getting rid of check-gmail and only using Ubuntu's mail icon. Ok, hope I was clear enough.

  • Making evince the default application for embedding PDFs in firefox in ubuntu

    While I'm on the subject of complaining about things that upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 broke (see here), another problem that happened on moving from 9.04 to 9.10 (I think) is this: Firefox used to open embedded pdf files with evince and that was fine. Now it opens them with okular, which I don't like for several reasons. (Pg Up, Pg Dn keys don't work. I don't like the KDE save file dialogue box, because I'm used to gnome. ) So my question is: how do I change which program is used to embed PDFs in firefox in ubuntu?

    I'm a n00b - trying to get apache2 set up on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on Rackspace Cloud. I have set up/configured OpenSSL and installed Apache, but Apache won't start. I assume its a misconfiguration in my /etc/apache2/sites-available/ssl or /etc/apache2/sites-available/default files) When I try to restart apache using the command: sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart I get the following error message: [error] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: Could not resolve host name *.80 -- ignoring!     I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

    I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 server installed within a VirtualBox VM instance. From the VirtualBox menu bar, I selected Devices: Install Guest Additions... Then performed the following commands: > sudo apt-get install -y build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) > sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/ > sudo /mnt/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run After some successful looking results, the following error is displayed: Installing the Window System drivers ...fail! (Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System.) After restarting, I was looking forward to some UI integration with my host desktop (resize window, not needing to press right-Ctrl to escape the client window, and having copy and paste functionality. Is it possible to install the Guest Additions without the X Window overhead (I plan to only use for shell commands)? If additional packages are required, which ones?

  • How to get rid of resume information on ubuntu 9.10 ("karmic")

    I am on an old laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed. I once tried to not shutdown but go into one of the resume states. On the next power on, resume did not work, but there was an error message during boot asking me for the resume image (which I do not have or know of) and when I press enter the normal boot happens. But this error pops up on every boot now. How can I get back the behaviour from before? Why does the boot process guess there would be a resume image and can I delete this information? I would like to post here the error messages from the boot proces, but they are not in /var/log/syslog, where else can they be?

  • Exim4 delivery to parent domain.

    I've set up an ubuntu server 9.1 system with exim4 as a relay for e-mail on my network. I've told exim that it is part of a subdomain: sub.domain.com I can test and deliver messages fine to my gmail accounts. I cannot get exim4 to sent messages to [email protected] though. The error received in the logs shows that exim thinks it should be delivering messages for domain.com to localhost instead of the actual MX for domain.com Is there an easy way to modify the debconf update-exim4.conf.conf so that is has the relay_to_domains capability?

    I can see libfreeimage3-dev in synaptic and have installed it from there, but what is it that I can't see it from the command line?   • ubuntu automount: only mounting drives as root?

    I'm sharing the /mount dir with smb so users on my network can access use drives added to my linux box. Users are able to read files but not write, modify or delete files or directories. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 server edition with halevt installed for usb auto mounting. Afaik halevt is automounting the drives to /media/ but the drives are showing up as: drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 20480 2010-12-29 20:40 disk drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 24576 2010-12-21 17:20 Sparta mount gives me: /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) /dev/sdc1 on /media/Sparta type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) When I umount the drives, the folders /media/disk and /media/Sparta are both removed. I tried changing the permissions with chown to nobody:nogroup but it doesn't work (which I assume is because they are ntfs drives).

    Hi all, I have just setup two servers running 10.04 server and have installed the ubuntu-desktop as follows: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop The problem is even though it says it has installed it will not auto-start... I've tried this: sudo mv /etc/init/gdm.conf /etc/init/gdm.disabled sudo mv /etc/init/gdm.disabled /etc/init/gdm.conf To enable/disable it but still not joy. Any ideas? Thanks, Ben
