    I'm absolutely new on Ubuntu. I was gonna learn Ubuntu, so I installed VMware 7.0.1 build-227600 on my Win7 x64, afterward I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it as a Virtual Machine. I just enabled root account, and when I log in as root for once, I received the following error : What's wrong with it? Am I miss something?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 upgrade: gdm-simple-greeter no seat-id found

    Upgraded a machine straight from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. After a successful upgrade, GDM shows no users on the login screen, with the error message: "gdm-simple-greeter no seat-id found" Users can log in via text mode. A recovery user can startx without issue. I'm convinced this is an issue with GDM and/or ConsoleKit. What are my options? I've debated a reinstall but would rather not. I've also thought of switching to KDM or XDM instead. I've filed a launchpad bug--no responses yet.

  • How do I stop VMware Workstation 6.5 from giving up input focus for no reason on Ubuntu 10.4?

    After patching some kernel modules, I got VMware Workstation 6.5.4 running on my Ubuntu 10.4 x86_64 machine. However, now my Windows XP SP3 guest instance cannot keep mouse input captured for any length of time. I can sometimes activate a control in the guest if a double click very quickly, but it's not reliable (and extremely annoying). Everything appears to be fine in Unity; the problem just appears when I'm running the instance in the VMware window.

  • How to wake from screensaver directly to the login screen in Ubuntu

    (a.k.a. How to switch users without entering password, part II) (see part I) I've got Ubuntu 9.10 with a user account for my wife, and one for myself. "Wake-from-screensaver" should result in "choose user" without having to enter any password. I know how to do that in Windows, but I'm not good with Linux (yet). Part of this was answered in my earlier question which helped me get past the login screen without passwords (after booting, and after choosing "switch user"), but once the screensaver kicks in and I wake it up again, the system does not present the "choose user" screen. Instead, it either turns off the screensaver and presents the desktop of the most recent user, or (if the screensaver is set to lock the screen) prompt for the user's password (which can be handily surpassed by clicking the "switch user" button and choosing the same user again). So, the login ("choose user") screen has been dealt with. How do I make the (any) screensaver return to the login screen at wake, rather than to the current user's desktop? Windows can do this, I'm sure Linux can too - but how?

  • suddenly cannot mount nfs share from Windows 7

    I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to Ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from Windows 7, mounting from Mac OSX works fine. In Windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does Ubuntu need some special magic to allow Windows 7 to mount an nfs share? This is my exports file /home/Bing/ 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN2 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN3 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check)

  • Ubuntu 10.04 Keyboard and Mouse Freezing Problem

    I had a partition setup with Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 dual booting. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 by installing fresh from CD but leaving the previous /home folder as is. Things seemed to be working fine, but started finding that my mouse and keyboard were freezing. After a quick search on the internet, I found the following suggestions as shown here:- Ubuntu Forums Here the suggestion was to:- Edit /etc/default/grub, go to the line that begins like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off" After that, run this command: sudo update-grub and Reboot This seemed to have resolved the issue but after a couple of days I again find my mouse and keyboard freezing. I also find that my parallel port printer had also stopped working. I have saved the output of dmesg and my syslog. The first can be viewed here but the syslog had too many characters, so if someone can suggest an alternative to freetexthost, I can post it there. Moreover, if there is any other information that should be provided, do let me know. I do hope we can get to the bottom of this issue. Thank you in advance for any help that could be provided.

    Some programs are about to make me epileptic with excessive screen flashing/blinking (terminator etc.). In Ubuntu Hardy Heron I could solve the problem by unchecking System-Preferences-Sound-System Beep-Visual system beep. However on Karmic Koala there is no such option. I googled and found many solutions for turning off visual beep/bell. However nothing seems to work. So my question is that what is the exact alternative to disable Visual system beep on Karmic?

  • Change Gnome-Panel profile at startup according to number of displays

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Laptop. I have a startup script which enables external displays, if they are connected. It runs at GDM startup, configured in /etc/gdm/Init/Default. When i'm running without external displays, Gnome should use 2 Panels. When i'm using 2 external displays, Gnome should add an additional Panel to the second display. But this should of course be removed again if i detach the external displays (and restart). Can i configure this use case by using Gnome Panel-profiles? I read that there is a startup option "--profile" for gnome-panel, but i don't know how and where i could switch the profile, especially because this has to be done after recognizing the number of displays. Or can i add a general Gnome profile and switch between those profiles somehow to achieve this behavior?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 - Add RAID 1 Array?

    I have an existing Ubuntu 10.04 desktop system setup and running on a hard drive (Drive A). I'd like to add 2 more hard drives (Drives B & C, same size) to the system and mount them as a RAID 1 array. How do I do that? I know how to create RAID arrays during the installation, but I don't want to reinstall my system, and I shouldn't have to since my system files will stay on their own drive separate from the RAID array. I've physically added both drives to the system, and formatted them as EXT3 with gparted. Ubuntu's disk utility has a "create raid" option, but it won't let me select any of my drives (it thinks they're all full). I don't mind using mdadm, but I've found several guides that are old, and give conflicting advice. Some say I have to edit an /etc/raidtab file, some say this is done automatically. So what's the current (Ubuntu 10.04) preferred way of adding a RAID 1 to an existing system? It should turn into a raid at boot, and mount itself in /home/myname/files/. Thanks!

In VirtualBox there is an option to choose between pulseaudio and alsa for sound, but it seems to have no effect. I am using virtualbox-3.0 packages, not the ose version. My system is up to date.

    New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!!     I have recently upgraded from karmic to lucid (plain ubuntu using gnome). Everything worked fine, but the characters now aren't anti-aliased any more, as you can appreciate from the screenshot: This is what I tried to fix the situation, unluckily without succeeding: Used the regular option pane from System-Preference-Appearance-Font (smoothing, hinting...) Edited the .fonts.conf file Disinstalling (and then re-installing) the mstcorefont package Changing the default Sans font to a font of my liking (e.g. Tahoma) from the abovementioned Appearance options My ubuntu installation is quite standard, with the typical add-ons one might wish for usability. I used the ubuntu start script to make a few tweaks. Thank you in advance for your help! :)

  • phpmyadmin login should not expire on ubuntu 10.04

    On ubuntu 10.04 the phpmyadmin config is a little bit scattered. I want to set the loginexpiration time to zero, should never expire, this is a secured setup behind a firewall. I think it is 3600 by default but cannot find the setting. Where is it? Edit: I actually changed it in /etc/phpmyadmin/conf.inc.php which seems the recommended place for ubuntu. The other files mentioned below might be overwritten on updates.

  • Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

    I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

  • What to do before connecting Ubuntu Server to the internet for the first time?

    I just finished installing Ubuntu Server 12.10 on an Asus Eee PC 1000H (to be used as a home server/sandbox) from USB. I installed this software during installation: OpenSSH server LAMP server Samba file server Virtual Machine host I won't use 2, 3 or 4 for a while though. Can/should I turn these off somehow? I have turned home directory encryption on. Security updates are installed automatically. I have chosen a strong password for the single user. I have never plugged in the internet cable so far. Before doing so I'd like to ask: What can/should I do/install to increase security before connecting to the internet? Firewall? Fail2ban? Users/Passwords? Encryption? Enable/Disable functionality? etc. I'm sorry if you get this question a lot. I've searched around quite a while, but it still feels like I might overlook something important.

  • Configuring vlans on Cisco SG200 series switch with Ubuntu server

    I created a vlan on Ubuntu with vconfig tool with 21 as id and eth1 as the host port. I connected eth1 to one of the ports on the swtich (GE23) as all ports trunk by default. In the webgui I created a vlan named test with the id 21 and I made GE2 are port as an access port. In port to vlan mapping I selected vlan 21 and added it port GE2 by selecting untagged option. I have assigned 192.168.1.1/24 as the ip of eth1.21 on Ubuntu. If I connect another cleint pc to GE2 port with a ip of 192.168.1.2/24 I cannot ping the server ip (192.168.1.1/24). Ping from server to client also does not work. I inspected packets that are sent out eth1 on the server and I could see the vlan 21 tag. And I connect the other end of the cable to a different Linux pc and inspected the packets but no vlan tags can be seen. What could be preventing me from getting vlans working? Edit 1 screenshots:

  • Clients not recognizing secondary LDAP groups?

    I'm having an issue where users who are members of secondary groups in LDAP are not being recognized as members of that group by the client. In this case, user jdoe is not being recognized as a member of the projects group. On the client, getent group shows: projects:*:20001:1001,1002,1003,1004,1005,1006 and getent passwd shows: jdoe:x:1003:10003:John Doe:/home/jdoe:/bin/bash But if I log in to the client as jdoe, and run id, I get: uid=1003(jdoe) gid=10003(jdoe) groups=24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),44(video),46(plugdev),10003(jdoe) It recognizes jdoe's primary group, and the secondary groups that are appended by the client to all LDAP users, but the LDAP secondary groups are not in the list. We can see that jdoe's id is in the projects group, so why is the projects group not showing when jdoe runs the id command? The group objects are basic posixGroup entries, with a memberUid attribute for each of its members. We are using OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.04 server and clients.
