  As a last resort to my question, I am yet to try the mem parameter of kernel to force it to use the specified amount of RAM. Short Summary - I can only see 3.2GB RAM on a 64bit OS and am not sure ifs a hardware limitation, so wants to try as I found a post on Ubuntuforums. My question is if its ok to play with my resident Ubuntu install or should I be using a live bootable usb? What values do I try (I have 6GB with only 3.2GB being usable) and how to keep it safe? I don't want to burn any of my hardware component at this point of time or make the system unbootable. Running Ubuntu 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

• Will Apple abandon OpenCL?

  I am developing OpenCL applications, amongst others for MacOS. The new Macbook pro 13 inch comes with an Intel HD Graphics 3000 card so it seams reasonable to assume all their mainstream computers like Macbook and Mac mini will also come out with this Intel graphics card soon. OpenCL is not available for Intel graphics cards. Intel having a terrible reputation in developing graphics drivers and Apple knowing this makes me wonder Apple is abandoning OpenCL already again. Especially considering OpenCL should run anywhere, not only on high end systems. Developing applications only for the high end Macs with dedicated graphics hardware or for previous generation hardware with the Geforce 320M would not be a feasible option for me. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

  Am Having issues with My Wireless 1 My laptop had dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.04 I upgraded to windows 8 and after the first 2-3 reboots all was working well in windows and ubuntu then my wireless in ubuntu stoped working saying "wifi is disabled by hardware switch" the hardware switch has no effect I removed network manager installed new firmwares and still nothing the wifi was not working in a moment of testing I installed wifi radar and this can detect the wireless signals and at one point it connected but still Network manger still says disabled. My Laptop is a HP Pavilion dm4 2070us with Wireless Centrino N 1000 I have updated to 13.10 thinking it would fix it but still nothing

• On-board HDMI Audio

  I have tried searching for answers to this issue but have had no luck. My HDMI display is working but I have no audio from the HDMI .There is no option for HDMI under sound preferences hardware or output. Purging and re-installing pulse audio doesn't change anything. I am using the on-board HDMI port on my motherboard, I do not have a PCI graphics card installed. CPU: i7-3770 Mobo: Asus Sabertooth z77 Kernel: 2.6.39-3-bb03 running aplay -l returns ** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Seems as if the system doesn't even recognize the possibilty of HDMI audio output. • One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great

  It has been a week since we moved our Geekswithblogs.net System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great.  I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware.  On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers.  I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in.  This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends that we will be announcing shortly.  We will be launching a nice little contest for our bloggers as well. • What's the difference or purpose of a file format like ELF when flat binaries take up less space and can do the same thing?

  I will give a better description now. In Linux driver development you need to follow a specification using an ELF file format as a finalized executable, i.e., that right there is not flat, it has headers, entry fields, and is basically carrying more weight than just a flat binary with opcodes. What is the purpose or in-depth difference of a Linux ELF file for a driver to interact with the video hardware, and, say, a bare, flat x86 16-bit binary I write that makes use of emulated graphics mode on a graphics card and writes to memory(besides the fact that the Linux driver probably is specific to making full use of the hardware and not just the emulated, backwards compatible memory accessing scheme). To sum it up, what is a difference or purpose of a binary like ELF with different headers and settings and just a flat binary with the necessary opcodes/instructions/data to do the same thing, just without any specific format? Example: Windows uses PE, Mac uses Mach-O/PEF, Linux uses ELF/FATELF, Unix uses COFF. What do any of them really mean or designate if you can just go flat, especially with a device driver which is system software.

  I got this late 2010 11" MacBook Air. I'm having issues with NVIDIA graphics, especially with GNOME Shell. I'm thinking about selling this to switch to the new MacBook Pro, particularly the entry level 13" (see specs here), because of the Intel HD Graphics 3000. I assume that it will be more FOSS-friendly. I just want to point out that there are non-negotiable reasons why I'm keeping an Apple hardware at the moment, so let's keep this on topic. Will the MacBook Pro Early 2011 work better with Ubuntu than the Air Late 2010? Any other factors than the graphics hardware? Should we expect better NVIDIA graphics anytime soon?

• Will Ubuntu be releasing an update for Cedar Trail Processors?

  There is a file available on the Intel web site with the file name "cdv-gfx-drivers-1.0.1_bee.tar.bz2" and a date of July 6, 2012. It can be found by searching the Intel Download Center for the filename or the string "Linux* PowerVR Graphics/Media Drivers". The download page links to the file, release notes and a link, Enabling hardware accelerated playback that takes one to a page containing links to two pdf documents titled "Enabling Hardware Accelerated Playback for Intel® AtomTM Processor N2000/D2000 Series", one for Ubuntu and one for Fedora. The instruction and release notes speak to working with kernel 3.1.0 and since I do not feel I have the skills, knowledge or training to do anything else but, follow the instructions to the "T", I am very reluctant to try anything on my freshly updated 3.2.0 kernel. I would much rather use a Ubuntu supported kernel that applies these drivers and doesn't break anything in the process. Is it a case where this is so new that Canonical has not yet included these drivers but, soon will do so?

  I installed Ubuntu, but then installed Kubuntu over it (formated Ubuntu Partition) because Ubuntu is not compatible with almost any hardware on my PC. Problem is I'm stuck with an old GRUB that says Ubuntu in the options because in my attempts to make it compatible with my hardware I got an old Grub with an image with an Earth that says Debian. How can I replace the GRUB with the one Kubuntu is supposed to install. I don't want to modify just the text, or the command to install on /sdaX, I want to actually re-write the MBR with the latest grub (reinstall the bootloader). Thanks.

  In Dijkstra's Notes on Structured Programming he talks a lot about the provability of computer programs as abstract entities. As a corollary, he remarks how testing isn't enough. E.g., he points out the fact that it would be impossible to test a multiplication function f(x,y) = x*y for any large values of x and y across the entire ranges of x and y. My question concerns his misc. remarks on "lousy hardware". I know the essay was written in the 1970s when computer hardware was less reliable, but computers still aren't perfect, so they must make calculation mistakes sometimes. Does anybody know how often this happens or if there are any statistics on this?

• Spherical harmonics lighting interpolation

  I want to use hardware filtering to smooth out colors in texels of a texture when I'm accessing texels at coordinates that are not directly at the center of the texel, the catch being that the texels store 2 bands of spherical harmonics coefficients (=4 coefficients), not RGBA intensity values. Can I just use hardware filtering like that (GL_LINEAR with and without mip mapping) without any considerations? In other terms: If I were to first convert the coefficients back to intensity representations, than manually interpolate between two intensities, would the resulting intensity be the same as if I interpolated between the coefficient vectors directly and then converted the interpolated result to intensities?

• wireless not enabling, wire works fine

  I have a built in wireless (with a switch & light on hardware for it) its a Sony Vaio E-series with ubuntu running along side windows 7, the button in the menu for enable wireless is greyed out, and in edit connections window, when i click the button to make it 'ON' it turns it 'off' immediately while the wireless button is switched on & the wireless light flashes once for 3 seconds(light on hardware), wireless works perfectly and the light stays on (solid) on windows 7, and it works fine with wired connection on Ubuntu, 1st time I am trying a Linux OS, everything else works perfectly.

• Fresh install of 12.04 Kernel panic

  I am attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. After the Ubuntu splash screen, the computer throws up this error: sr 2:0:1:0: [sr0] Unhandled error code Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! PID: 1, comm: run-init Not Tainted 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu The computer hardware is as follows: Core 2 quad 9400, 8gb RAM, GTX 275, 3 Mech HD, 2 SSD, Win 7 install. I would like to dual boot Ubuntu on this computer if possible. I did try placing this disk in my laptop and booted successfully which leads me to believe the fault lies with the desktop. Under windows all hardware seems to work ok. Any ideas?

  I have read in some forums that the kernel team is working on improving battery life and energy efficiency in linux. Unfortunately our community really lags behind windows and mac in that regard. I would like to read about the reasons why this difference exists with other platforms. Is it purely due to closed hardware specs from vendors or does it has to be with kernel design issues? Apple devices with unix cores have amazing battery times, but they also design their own hardware...just want to understand this issues in a less technical way I know that recent kernel updates in Ubuntu have improved the battery life in most computers, but I was wondering if there is still development going on and where can I read more about it. This can happen at different times and places. For example, module A and module B can both request (at different times) some resources from my module. Those 'resources' are actually what the configuration is. 2) After it is clear that no more requests are going to be realized, a startup command, giving a summary of the requested resources, needs to be sent to the hardware. 3) Only after that, can (and must) detailed configuration of said resources be done. 4) Also, only after 2), can (and must) routing of selected resources to the declared callers be done. A common cause for bugs, even for me, who wrote the thing, is mistaking this order. What naming conventions, designs or mechanisms can I employ to make the interface usable by someone who sees the code for the first time?
