  • How much do politics/office intrigue interfere with your day to day tasks at work?

    I'm currently blessed to be employed at a location where politics are pretty much non-existant and management overhead is nearly nil. As I've only worked at this one location for my entire, lengthy career, I have very little frame of reference outside of an occasional Dilbert comic or offhand comment from others about just how bad office politics and management interference get in the way of getting your code done elsewhere. While I'm not actively looking for a new job, this one point has made me quite reluctant to even look seriously elsewhere. My question is, just how much are politics a way of life in larger companies - in or out of the game industry and how much does it affect your day to day satisfaction?

  • How to prevent Spell checking code in MS Office?

    We use MS Office. Outlook for emails, Word for some documentation and I use OneNote a lot for my own note taking. What bugs me is when I drop some code or use key words or even camel case into these apps the spell checking picks them up and I have red squiggles everywhere. Ignore is pretty much useless, so either I have to turn off Spell Check altogether start adding these to the custom dictionary. What would be good is if I can use the Set Language function to mark a whole block of text to just not be spell checked. Has anyone found a nice solution to this or do you know of a blank dictionary is best to use? I found using "Mohawk" kind of does that... might just use that for now. Maybe create a macro to switch between them.

  • Word Interop compile time error

    I am getting the following error when referencing the assembly Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word in my asp.net application. The type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.ApplicationClass' exists in both 'C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word\11.0.0.0_71e9bce111e9429c\Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.dll' and 'C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word\12.0.0.0_71e9bce111e9429c\Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.dll' Previously, I was getting the error but the 12.0.0.0 was in the PIA directory under Visual Studio, but the error message was the same, except pointing to a different path. Since then, I copied the dll to the GAC, but with the same error. I thought that .Net was supposed to take care of this. Can anyone give me some help? Thanks BTW, I am doing this using Visual Studio .Net 2008

  • How can I fix Office Sharepoint Search service?

    For some reason, in operations server services, Office Sharepoint Search Service is MISSING! Which means I cant get Shared services working, which in turn I cannot get, and I do not think I have ever got Usage and reporting to see who is visiting my website, counter and with what OS/ browser ETC. I dont think I have ever seen this work in the 2 years trying with sharepoint. So in essense I have two problems, most important SEARCH, second usage reports. When trying to search, all i get is unknown error. Nothing is in my event viewer at all. I have tried http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=96 , in the comments on that site, on other person reports search is missing entirely and is going to uninstall. Im tired of uninstall sharepoint and resinstalling to fix an odd off issue. I have things setup with Team foundation server that took forever to get work and reinstallation is not my solution. As for usage reporting, this is what microsoft responds to the " Both Windows SharePoint Services Usage logging and Office SharePoint Usage Processing must be enabled to view usage reports. Please contact your administrator to ensure that these services are enabled. " error I cannot do all the steps since SSP needs to be setup which i cant above.

  • Why does a document in Word 2007 stop recognizing the mouse after the document loses focus?

    When I open a document in Word 2007, everything works fine, I can edit, highlight text, etc. However, the instant Word loses focus, when I focus back the document doesn't recognize anything the mouse does. The tabbed menu at the top seems to recognize the mouse but the document itself does not. I can scroll through via the scroll-wheel and I can type. However, typing just shows up where the mouse cursor last was before focus was taken away. I've tried clearing some word data registry keys. I've also found that some Word Add-ins can cause problems. LaserFiche is one I see mentioned a lot. As far as I can tell I have no add-ons though. Any ideas? It's crazy-annoying. UPDATE- - Word is the only program that has this problem - Typically I have Toad (Oracle DB management app), an XP virtual machine with various apps running on it, Skype, Google Talk, and maybe a handful of other programs at any given time open... Windows Media player, Outlook. - Yes, this happens even if nothing else is running. From a fresh restart as well. - I'm running Vista 64 with SP1 - According to Windows Update, I have the latest of everything. This has been happening for a couple of months now. Just never took the time to look into because I usually never have to use word.

  • Install MS Office on Windows Server 2008 - in support of Quickbooks RemoteApp

    How can I install MS Office on Windows Server 2008? The purpose would be to enable Quickbooks to be able to export to Excel. Quickbooks is set up to run as a RemoteApp in a Terminal Server environment. The Quickbooks applicaiton senses whether or not Excel is installed and will not allow the user to create an Excel report unless Excel is actually installed on the client running Quickbooks. Since the client and the server are the same machine in a Terminal Server environment, Excel must be installed on Windows Server for the Quickbooks Excel exporting feature to work in this setup. There is no need to actually use Excel in a Terminal Services environment. We only need to generate the Excel files using the server, then we can use an installed version Excel on a regular Windows 7 machine to work with the Excel file. MS Office does not normally install on Windows Server. Is there any way to buy a special license? Could we somehow fool Quickbooks into thinking Excel is installed, if that would work?

    I am trying to find out the practicalities of doing a mail merge when each “record” to be merged on includes some images. I need to: print letters And envelopes Both the letters and the envelopes have: Fixed text Fixed images Text that come from the mail merge record Images that come from the mail merge record I don’t know if all images will be the same size for every record, so a bit of simple “on the fly” automatic formatting may be needed . I need to be able to repeat a single item if I get a problem (e.g when folding the letter). What problems am I likely to have? Is Word 2007 up to this sort of mail merging, or should I be looking at a report writing tool? How do I restart a print run after a printer jam etc? What format should I store the “records” and there images in? E.g Can standard software cope with images that are stored in separate files named after the “CustomerId” that is in the “record” (I can write custom software if needed, but would rather use standard “of-the-shelf” software for the printing, I am planning on custom software for the data creation, so can output in whatever format is needed)

    I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware. Are there any official guidelines from oracle or windows on this? Would this lenovo x220, for example, be sufficiently strong? The specs below were taken from this review. Email is one of the most important communications mediums today, but even with all of the advances in Outlook over the years it can still be difficult to keep track of conversations, files, and contacts.  Xobni makes it easy by indexing your emails and organizing them by sender.  You can use its powerful search to quickly find any email, find related messages, and then view more information about that contact with information from social networks.  And, to top it off, it even lets you view your Yahoo! emails directly in Outlook without upgrading to a Yahoo! Plus account.  Xobni runs in Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010, including the 64 bit version of Outlook 2010, and users of older versions will especially enjoy the new features Xobni brings for free. Getting started Download the Xobni Free installer (link below), and run to start the installation.  Make sure to exit Outlook before installing.  Xobni may need to download additional files which may take a few moments. Email to Outlook for Free One of Xobni’s neatest features is that it let’s you add your Yahoo! email account to Outlook for free.  Click the gear icon in the bottom of the Xobni sidebar and select Options to set it up. Select the Integration tab, and click Enable to add Yahoo! mail to Xobni. Sign in with your Yahoo! account, and make sure to check the Keep me signed in box. Note that you may have to re-signin every two weeks to keep your Yahoo! account connected.  Select I agree to finish setting it up. Xobni will now download and index your recent Yahoo! mail. Your Yahoo! messages will only show up in the Xobni sidebar.  Whenever you select a contact, you will see related messages from your Yahoo! account as well.  Or, you can search from the sidebar to find individual messages from your Yahoo! account.  Note the Y! logo beside Yahoo! messages.   Select a message to read it in the Sidebar.  You can open the email in Yahoo! in your browser, or can reply to it using your default Outlook email account. If you have many older messages in your Yahoo! account, make sure to go back to the Integration tab and select Index Yahoo! Mail to index all of your emails.   • Using SharePoint label to display document version in Word 2007 doesn't work when moved to another l

    I am surfacing the Document Library version of a Word 2007 document by creating a Label ({version}) within the content type of the Document Library and adding it as a Quick-part Label in the Word 2007 document. This works great. The latest version always shows up when I open the Word document. I also added this Version quick-part field to the footer of the Word document and then added this document as a document template to my content type, "ContentTypeMain". Now, I can go to my Document Library and I can create a New instance of "ContentTypeMain" with the Version field automatically there. This works great as well. However, if I create another Document Library and add the same Content Type, "ContentTypeMain" to it, the value of the Version quick-part doesn't update or refresh. The only way is to add another copy of the Label quick-part. It seems like the Quick-Part Label that maps to the Document Library Version is unique to the Document Library. My application dynamically creates subsites using site definitions and list templates. Thus the document library in each of the subsites are all being created from the same List Template. I inspected the XML files under the hood of the Word Document and it does look like there is a GUID attached to the Quick-Part Version field.

If "tblABC" is in the same database as the code then the problem does not occur. Hi, We have recently upgraded to Office 2007. We have a method in which we have an open recordset (DAO). We then call another sub (UpdatingSub below) that executes SQL. This method has its own error handler. If error 3381 is encountered then the recordset in the calling method becomes "unset" and we get error 3420 'Object invalid or no longer set'. Other errors in UpdatingSub do not cause the same problem. This code works fine in Access 2003.   • What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

    Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

  • OneNote can't connect to SkyDrive in Windows 8.1

    Since I installed windows 8.1 I can't open my OneNote notebooks stored on skydrive with the 2013 Office OneNote app. When I click in the office app to open from skydrive it gives back: "We can't get your notebooks right now. Please try again later." I can open them without trouble in the modern UI onenote app, but I can't open password protected pages there. Also if I try to open it from a browser the error message follows: "We couldn't open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it." Neither can I create new notebooks on skydrive with the office app. "...The specified location is not available. -You do not have permissions to modify the specified location..." Can it be fixed somehow? Or can I at least save a notebook to my hard drive without opening it in office? The backup file got deleted with the win 8.1 installation.

  • Is there a setting in Exchange Server 2007 that we can set to make these headers propogate and be received by a POP/IMAP client?

    When using EWS Managed API to send Email via Exchange Server 2007. I noticed that MAPI clients like MS Outlook display all custom headers. But when I use POP3/IMAP clients like MS Outlook Express. I have noticed that these custom headers do not display in the message opened from MS Outlook Express. Is there a setting in Exchange Server 2007 that we can set to make these custom headers propagate and be received by a POP/IMAP client? Also why do custom headers in example below display up in lower case in MAPI clients like MS Outlook? But surprisingly if we use SMTPClient class to send email then these headers display as sent with Case Sensitive letters. eg. Header.     Hi all, It is rumoured that WPF 4.0 would deliver us an out-of-the-box Office Ribbon. A new WPF Ribbon Control will be available for download shortly after the release of WPF 4. [1] Now my internet and MSDN search turned out to be fruitless, and as far as I know, it would be release after the .NET 4.0 framework would launch. My search lead me to the Office plugin ribbon controls and the CTP prereleased before the release of .net 4.0 with a limited featureset. So my question is: does anyone know if and when Microsoft will release this Office Ribbon with the framework? Or if they don't a nice press note saying that they ditched the project. Also if anyone has experience with the Ribbon I'm talking about, will this Ribbon work in a partial trusted environment? My thanks will be ever lasting! ;)

    using Fedora 16 OS. i want to use Libre Office Base to connect to MySQL. when i set up the JDBC connection, it asks me for the driver, however, it cannot be loaded (because it doesn't see it in the classpath). does anybody know how to set the classpath for Libre Office? is there like a config util tool for that? e.g. my driver is [B]com.mysql.jdbc.Driver [/B]situated in[B] /usr/share/java/mysql-connector-java-5.1.17.jar[/B]. it works fine when i connect from other JDBC clients, like straight Java or Eclipse Quantum plugin. the problem is that Libre Office does not ask me for the (class)path of where it can find the driver and i do not know where and how to set it so that it becomes visible. thanks

    I have a large table of about 7500 store names. I need to search through those names and, if they are not unique, append an incrementing value, for example: store_1 store_2 etc. Anyone know how to do this? For another project, I was using this: =J1&IF(COUNTIF($J$1:J1,J1)1,COUNTIF($J$1:J1,J1),"") but in open office this gives an error, and in google spreadsheets, it times out because my database is so big. Any suggestions?
