• SQL SERVER – Get Latest SQL Query for Sessions – DMV

  In recent SQL Training I was asked, how can one figure out what was the last SQL Statement executed in sessions. The query for this is very simple. It uses two DMVs and created following quick script for the same. SELECT session_id, TEXT FROM sys.dm_exec_connections CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(most_recent_sql_handle) AS ST While working with DMVs if you ever find any DMV has column with name sql_handle you can right away join that DMV with another DMV sys.dm_exec_sql_text and can get the text of the SQL statement.   At this weeks MySQL Connect conference, Oracle previewed an exciting new wave of developments for MySQL Cluster, further extending its simplicity and flexibility by expanding the range of use-cases, adding new NoSQL options, and automating configuration. What’s new: Development Release 1: MySQL Cluster 7.3 with Foreign Keys Early Access “Labs” Preview: MySQL Cluster NoSQL API for Node.js Early Access “Labs” Preview: MySQL Cluster GUI-Based Auto-Installer In this blog, I'll introduce you to the features being previewed. Review the blogs listed below for more detail on each of the specific features discussed. Save the date!: A live webinar is scheduled for Thursday 25th October at 0900 Pacific Time / 1600UTC where we will discuss each of these enhancements in more detail. Registration will be open soon and published to the MySQL webinars page MySQL Cluster 7.3: Development Release 1 The first MySQL Cluster 7.3 Development Milestone Release (DMR) previews Foreign Keys, bringing powerful new functionality to MySQL Cluster while eliminating development complexity. Foreign Key support has been one of the most requested enhancements to MySQL Cluster – enabling users to simplify their data models and application logic – while extending the range of use-cases for both custom projects requiring referential integrity and packaged applications, such as eCommerce, CRM, CMS, etc. Implementation The Foreign Key functionality is implemented directly within the MySQL Cluster data nodes, allowing any client API accessing the cluster to benefit from them – whether they are SQL or one of the NoSQL interfaces (Memcached, C++, Java, JPA, HTTP/REST or the new Node.js API - discussed later.) Download SQL Server 2008 – Service Pack 2 from here. Please note, this is not SQL Server 2008 R2 but it is SQL Server 2008 – Service Pack 2. • mysql not starting

  I have a server running on rackspace.com, it been running for about a year (collecting data for a project) and no problems. Now it seems mysql froze (could not connect either through ssh command line, remote app (sequel pro) or web (pages using the db just froze). I got a bit eager to fix this quick and rebooted the virtual server, running ubuntu 10.10. It is a small virtual LAMP server (10gig storage - I'm only using 1, 256mb ram -has not been a problem). Now after the reboot, I cannot get mysql to start again. service mysql status mysql stop/waiting I believe this just means mysql is not running. How do I get this running again? service mysql start start: Job failed to start No. Just typing 'mysql' gives: mysql ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) There is a .sock file in this folder, 'ls -l' gives: srwxrwxrwx 1 mysql mysql 0 2012-12-01 17:20 mysqld.sock From googleing this for a while now, I see that many talk about the logfile and my.cnf. Logs Not sure witch ones I should look at. This log-file is empty: 'var/log/mysql/error.log', so is the 'var/log/mysql.err' and 'var/log/mysql.log'. my.cnf is located in '/etc/mysql' and looks like this. • SQL SERVER – DATE and TIME in SQL Server 2008

  I was thinking about DATE and TIME datatypes in SQL Server 2008. I earlier wrote about the about best practices of the same. Recently I had written one of the script written for SQL Server 2008 had to run on SQL Server 2005 (don’t ask me why!), I had to convert the DATE and TIME datatypes to DATETIME. Let me run quick demo for the same. DECLARE @varDate AS DATE DECLARE @varTime AS TIME SET @varDate = '10/10/2010' SET @varTime = '12:12:12' SELECT CAST(@varDate AS DATETIME) C_Date SELECT CAST(@varTime AS DATETIME) C_Time As seen in example when DATE is converted to DATETIME it adds the of midnight. When TIME is converted to DATETIME it adds the date of 1900 and it is something one wants to consider if you are going to run script from SQL Server 2008 to earlier version with CONVERT.   Few days ago, I wrote about SQL SERVER – Find Current Location of Data and Log File of All the Database. There was very interesting conversation in comments by blog readers. Blog reader and SQL Expert Sreedhar has very interesting DMV presented which lists the most active database in SQL Server. For quick reference he has included the size of the disk in KB, MB and GB as well. Being his big brother and a programmer myself I really want to guide him and give him the right material to learn and become good at programming. My motives are selfish I admit, I want him to become really good so he can teach me things in the future. :) After poking around the web, I found Head First Programming. This book seems to teach the fundamentals of programming, using Python as the language. Would you recommend this book as his first book ever? Would learning Python as his first language stunt him somehow? What are your thoughts and suggestions? Thanks!

• Umbraco Certified Developer - Level 2 - Chris Houston

  I just thought I'd create a quick blog post to say that I have now been on the Umbraco Level 2 course (which I would recommend!) and although it turned out that I pretty much new 95% of what was taught, the extra 5% and a chance to have a trip to Copenhagen made it worth it :)I am now officially Umbraco level 2 certified :)Hopefully over the next month I will have some time to start adding a few more useful blog posts to my blog. I know I've been a little slack on the posting in the last month, it's just been a busy time for me!

• Ubuntu Installation Help for an IBM R31 Thinkpad

  I recently acquired an old IBM R31 Thinkpad, and I'd figure I'd install Lubuntu on it. I've followed the quick steps for USB installation on the help wiki page, but I can't seem to get it to boot from my formatted flash drive. I've checked the boot priority on the BIOS page, but the option to boot from USB doesn't even seem to be there. The only bootable options are legacy and USB floppy drives. The CD drive is shot, so I can't install from there either. Do I have any other options for installation without having to pay for a floppy drive or a replacement CD drive? The wiki pages mentions something about installation from within Windows. Would it be possible to remove Windows using this option, or would it just create a partition? Thanks

• Count Email Address Domains

  A quick tidbit I came up with today to count email addresses in a mysql database table grouping them by domain. So say for example you have a large list of subscribers and you want to see the breakdown of people who use Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc. SELECT COUNT( SUBSTRING_INDEX( `email` , '@', -1 ) ) AS `count` , SUBSTRING_INDEX( `email` , '@', -1 ) AS `domain` FROM `subscribers` WHERE `email` != '' GROUP BY `domain` ORDER BY `count` DESC This sql statement assumes that the table is called 'subscribers' and the column containing the email addresses is 'email'. Change these two values to match your table name and email address column name. mysql count email mysql count domain mysql split email mysql split domain

• Enabling SSL on apache2 causes address already in use error

  My server works just fine on a normal apache2 install. Now, I'm trying to install subversion on this server using this guide: http://alephzarro.com/blog/2007/01/07/installation-of-subversion-on-ubuntu-with-apache-ssl-and-basicauth/ I get the following error: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 When I do grep -rH 443 /etc/apache2/, I get results in two files: ports.conf and sites-enabled/default-ssl I tried it both with and without that last Listen 443 commented out, here's ports.conf: NameVirtualHost *:80 Listen 80 <IfModule mod_ssl.c> NameVirtualHost *:443 Listen 443 </IfModule> <IfModule mod_gnutls.c> Listen 443 </IfModule> #Listen 443 And the first few lines of default-ssl <IfModule mod_ssl.c> <VirtualHost *:443> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /this/isnt/relevant/probably.pem SSLProtocol all SSLCipherSuite HIGH:MEDIUM And netstat -an --inet | grep 443 returns nothing.
