WebLogic Server benchmarks show major performance improvements when native performance packs are used on machines that host Oracle WebLogic Server instances. Important Note:  Always enable native I/O, if available, and check for errors at startup to make sure it is being initialed properly. Tip: The use of NATIVE performance packs are enabled by default in the configuration shipped with your distribution. • Cloning a WebCenter Portal Managed Server

  I had to run some tests on a WebCenter Portal application deployed in a cluster. I've got a development VM with WebCenter PS4 (this also works on PS5) and I was trying to figure out how could I easily add a new managed server to my single-node domain, and make it a cluster. Creating the machine and cluster are a piece of cake, you can do it pretty quick through WLS Console. Now, you'd guess that using the clone option on WLS Console would do the magic of cloning an existing instance, right? Well, it does, but all you get is an "empty" managed server: with no target libraries.  It was a good surprise to find that WebCenter provides a way of cloning an existing WebCenter Portal managed server through a simple WLST command: cloneWebCenterManagedServer  This is a screenshot of my starting point. I want to clone WC_CustomPortal managed server: These are the steps to clone my WC_CustomPortal managed server: 1. In the command line, invoke WLST. It should be on <ORACLE_HOME_for_component>/common/bin/wlst.sh. In my case, it is ./product/Middleware/WebCenterPortal/common/bin/wlst.sh 2. Connect to the Admin Server:  connect ('<wls_admin_username>','<password>','t3://<server>:<port>') 3. Execute the following command: wls:/webcenter/serverConfig> cloneWebCenterManagedServer(baseManagedServer='WC_CustomPortal', newManagedServer='WC_CustomPortal2', newManagedServerPort=8893, verbose=1) I've turned on verbose output on purpose so I could see what the script was doing while executing. • How to upgrade Apache 2 from 2.2 to 2.4

  I was in the process of doing a test upgrade from Apache 2.2 to 2.4.3. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I would have upgraded to 12.04 for this to see if the upgrade would go a lot smoother. Unfortunately, I was told it wasn't an option...so I'm stuck using 10.04. The process I did this was: Before attempting this, I have managed to upgrade APR from 1.3 to 1.4 as well since apache told me it was a requirement beforehand: http://apr.apache.org/download.cgi First remove all traces of the current apache: sudo apt-get --purge remove apache2 sudo apt-get remove apache2-common apache2-utils apache2.2-bin apache2-common sudo apt-get autoremove whereis apache2 sudo rm -Rf /etc/apache2 /usr/lib/apache2 /usr/include/apache2 Afterwards, I did the following: sudo apt-get install build-essential sudo apt-get build-dep apache2 Then install apache 2.4 with the following: wget http://apache.mirrors.tds.net//httpd/httpd-2.4.3.tar.gz tar -xzvf httpd-2.4.3.tar.gz && cd httpd-2.4.3 sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --with-apr=/usr/local/apr --enable-mods-shared=all --enable-deflate --enable-proxy --enable-proxy-balancer --enable-proxy-http --with-mpm=prefork sudo make sudo make install After the make install, I ended up getting a series of errors that prevented it from installing correctly: exports.c:2513: error: redefinition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_current' exports.c:1838: note: previous definition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_current' was here exports.c:2514: error: redefinition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_name_get' exports.c:1839: note: previous definition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_name_get' was here exports.c:2515: error: redefinition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_get' exports.c:1840: note: previous definition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_get' was here exports.c:2516: error: redefinition of 'ap_hack_apr_uid_homepath_get' Looking for exports.c only leads me back to the httpd-2.4.3 folder. So I'm not sure what these errors mean... Thanks in advance for any help you have to offer!

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). 3 years ago, I had published “How big can my SharePoint 2007 installation be?” Well, SharePoint 2010 has significant under the covers improvements. So, how big can your SharePoint 2010 installation be? There are three kinds of limits you should know about Hard limits that cannot be exceeded by design. Configurable that are, well configurable – but the default values are set for a pretty good reason, so if you need to tweak, plan and understand before you tweak. Soft limits, you can exceed them, but it is not recommended that you do. Before you read any of the limits, read these two important disclaimers - 1. The limit depends on what you’re doing. So, don’t take the below as gospel, the reality depends on your situation. 2. There are many additional considerations in planning your SharePoint solution scalability and performance, besides just the below. So with those in mind, here goes.   Hard Limits - Zones per web app 5 RBS NAS performance Time to first byte of any response from NAS must be less than 20 milliseconds List row size 8000 bytes driven by how SP stores list items internally Max file size 2GB (default is 50MB, configurable). RBS does not increase this limit. Search metadata properties 10,000 per item crawled (pretty damn high, you’ll never need to worry about it). Max # of concurrent in-memory enterprise content types 5000 per web server, per tenant Max # of external system connections 500 per web server PerformancePoint services using Excel services as a datasource No single query can fetch more than 1 million excel cells Office Web Apps Renders One doc per second, per CPU core, per Application server, limited to a maximum of 8 cores.   Configurable Limits - Row Size Limit 6, configurable via SPWebApplication.MaxListItemRowStorage property List view lookup 8 join operations per query Max number of list items that a single operation can process at one time in normal hours 5000 Configurable via SPWebApplication.MaxItemsPerThrottledOperation   Also you get a warning at 3000, which is configurable via SPWebApplication.MaxItemsPerThrottledOperationWarningLevel   In addition, throttle overrides can be requested, throttle overrides can be disabled, and time windows can be set when throttle is disabled. Max number of list items for administrators that a single operation can process at one time in normal hours 20000 Configurable via SPWebApplication.MaxItemsPerThrottledOperationOverride Enumerating subsites 2000 Word and Powerpoint co-authoring simultaneous editors 10 (Hard limit is 99). # of webparts on a page 25 Search Crawl DBs per search service app 10 Items per crawl db 25 million Search Keywords 200 per site collection. There is a max limit of 5000, which can then be modified by editing the web.config/client.config. Concurrent # of workflows on a content db 15. Number of events picked by the workflow timer job and delivered to workflows 100. You can increase this limit by running additional instances of the workflow timer service. Visio services file size 50MB Visio web drawing recalculation timeout 120 seconds Configurable via – Powershell commandlet Set-SPVisioPerformance Visio services minimum and maximum cache age for data connected diagrams 0 to 24 hours. Default is 60 minutes. And San Joaquin County, California won in the small company category for 1-100 employees. The Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Award was established to recognize excellence in the area of information management. "Best practice" denotes a standard of excellence that has been achieved with an organization and refers to a process that can be quantified, adapted and repeated. Like many counties, San Joaquin County, California, was faced with huge challenges due to decreasing funds and staff, including decreased cost of building capability. • SQL SERVER – Planned and Unplanned Availablity Group Failovers – Notes from the Field #031

  [Note from Pinal]: This is a new episode of Notes from the Fields series. AlwaysOn is a very complex subject and not everyone knows many things about this. The matter of the fact is there is very little information available on this subject online and not everyone knows everything about this. This is why when a very common question related to AlwaysOn comes, people get confused. In this episode of the Notes from the Field series database expert John Sterrett (Group Principal at Linchpin People) explains a very common issue DBAs and Developer faces in their career and is related to Planned and Unplanned Availablity Group Failovers. Linchpin People are database coaches and wellness experts for a data driven world. Read the experience of John in his own words. Whenever a disaster occurs it will be a stressful scenario regardless of how small or big the disaster is. This gets multiplied when it is your first time working with newer technology or the first time you are going through a disaster without a proper run book. Today, were going to help you establish a run book for creating a planned failover with availability groups. To make today’s session simple were going to have two instances of SQL Server 2012 included in an availability group and walk through the steps of doing an unplanned failover.  We will focus on using the user interface and T-SQL to complete the failovers. We are going to use a two replica Availability Group where each replica is in another location. Therefore, we will be covering Asynchronous (non automatic failover) the following is a breakdown of our availability group utilized today. Seeing the following screen might be scary the first time you come across an unplanned failover.  It looks like our test database used in this Availability Group is not functional and it currently isn’t. The database status is not synchronizing which makes sense because the primary replica went down so it couldn’t synchronize. With that said, we can still failover and make it functional while we troubleshoot why we lost our primary replica. To start we are going to right click on the availability group that needs to be restarted and select failover. This will bring up the following wizard, which will walk you through several steps needed to complete the failover using the graphical user interface provided with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). You are going to see warning messages simply because we are in Asynchronous commit mode and can not guarantee ‘no data loss’ when we do failover. Just incase you missed it; you get another screen warning you about potential data loss because we are in Asynchronous mode. Next we get to connect to the specific replica we want to become the primary replica after the failover occurs. In our case, we only have two replicas so this is trivial. In order to failover, it’s required to connect to the replica that will become primary.  The following screen shows that the connection has been made successfully. Next, you will see the final summary screen. Once again, this reminds you that the failover action will cause data loss as were using Asynchronous commit mode due to the distance between instances used for disaster recovery. Finally, once the failover is completed you will see the following screen. If you followed along this long you might be wondering what T-SQL scripts are generated for clicking through all the sections of the wizard. If you have used Database Mirroring in the past you might be surprised.  It’s not too different, which makes sense because the data is being replicated via SQL Server endpoints just like the good old database mirroring. Now were going to take a look at how to do a failover with just T-SQL. First, were going to need to open a new query window and run our query in SQLCMD mode. Just incase you haven’t used SQLCMD mode before we will show you how to enable it below. Now you can run the following statement. Notice, we connect to the replica we want to become primary after failover and specify to force failover to allow data loss. • Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• nginx starts up before apache

  I've been fumbling through setting up redmine on a unbuntu (12.04) box and somewhere along the line NginX got set up and now apache no longer loads because nginx has already grabbed the port. I tried removing NginX with the below command but that didn't seem to make any difference. When I restarted the server and pointed my web browser I still got the "Welcome to NginX" message sudo apt-get purge nginx I have confirmed that NginX is gone because when I run the above now I get as an output Package nginx is not installed, so not removed Yet everytime I start the machine it is running again. • Trash Destination Adapter

  The Trash Destination and this article came from early experiences of using SSIS and community feedback at the time. When developing a package it is very useful to have a destination adapter that does nothing but consume rows with no setup requirement. You often want run a package part way through development, or just add a path so you can set a Data Viewer. There are stock tasks that can be used, but with the Trash Destination all columns are treated as selected automatically (usage type of read-only), so the pipeline knows they are required. It is also obvious that this is for development or diagnostic purposes, and is clearly not a part of the functional design of the package. It is also ideal for just playing around and exploring concepts in SSIS, and is often used in conjunction with the Data Generator Source. Using these two components it is easy to setup a test of an expression in the Derived Column Transformation for example. The Data Generator Source provides some dummy data, and the Trash Destination allows you to anchor the output path and set a Data Viewer to examine the results. It can also be used when performance tuning packages. It is a consistent and known quantity that has no external influences, so it is ideal as a destination when breaking the data flow into sections to isolate a bottleneck. The adapter is really simple to use and requires no setup. Simply drop it onto the pipeline designer and use it to terminate your data flow path. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. Finally, for 2005/2008, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Trash Destination transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations. The message will be en-queued in the "Request" queue and the reply will be returned in the "Reply" queue. The reason I have used such a selector is that the back-end system that reads from the request queue and generates the response in the response queue actually generates more than one response and hence I must use a filter to exclude the unwanted responses.4) Select the message schema for request as well as response. 5) Add an <invoke> activity in BPEL corresponding to the JMS Adapter partner link. Please note that I am setting an additional header as my third-party application requires this.6) Add a <receive> activity just after the <invoke> and select the "Reply" operation. End User Documentation Enhancements The following enhancements have been made to the documentation: New RETL Installation GuideNew in Release 13.2.4, the RETL Installation Guide includes complete instructions to install and configure RETL 13.2.4. Installation instructions were previously in the Programmer’s Guide. As part of this enhancement, content was added to and tested in the RETL Installation Guide to ensure that it contain similar chapters and sections included in other Oracle Retail Installation Guides. Template Creator documentation, under the RIB product umbrellaThe Oracle Retail Functional Artifact Guide and the Oracle Retail Functional ArtifactGenerator Guide contain new information about a new tool called the Template Creator. The Functional Artifacts Generator tool has been enhanced to generate custom and localized payloads business objects on demand, based on Oracle Retail Functional Artifact rules. A new tool called the Template Creator has been provided to create the placeholder XSDs and the import hooks in the base objects on an as-needed basis. In other words, this tool constructs the appropriate placeholders in the packaging structure in the correct locations. • Technologies similar to Flash and Silverlight for Desktop apps

  Long story short: we use Flash as a partial GUI in our .NET desktop applications. Normally, this means that the Flash player control sits in some WinForm, playing a movie file. Changes in the real world are presented in the movie (e.g., a light-bulb turned on in the real world? a matching one will light up inside the Flash movie), and interaction with the instances in the movie will affect the real world (clicked the light-bulb? the light bulb in the real world will turn on). My question is: which technologies / products can offer me similar capabilities? Of course, I'm looking for something that can compete with Flash / Silverlight: animations, object-oriented scripting and design, powerful tools allowing the artists to design symbols conveniently, etc... static image objects won't cut it
