    - by The Official Microsoft IIS Site
    Dear SQL Server Developer Community, As you know, two weeks ago, we released our 3.0 drivers along with SQL Server 2012 . It was around the same time that PHP 5.4 was also released to the web, and we have received many requests from our community members to support the new PHP runtime. It is my pleasure to announce that we have listened to you, and have updated our drivers to 3.0.1. The major feature added for this release is support for PHP 5.4, as well as some minor bug fixes. • need example sql transaction procedures for sales tracking or financial database [closed]

    - by fa1c0n3r
    hi, i am making a database for an accounting/sales type system similar to a car sales database and would like to make some transactions for the following real world actions salesman creates new product shipped onto floor (itempk, car make, year, price).   salesman changes price.   salesman creates sale entry for product sold (salespk, itemforeignkey, price sold, salesman).   salesman cancels item for removed product.   salesman cancels sale for cancelled sale    the examples i have found online are too generic...like this is a transaction... i would like something resembling what i am trying to do to understand it.  anybody have some good similar or related sql examples i can look at to design these? do people use transactions for sales databases?  or if you have done this kind of sql transaction before could you make an outline for how these could be made?  thanks  my thread so far on stack overflow... http://stackoverflow.com/q/4975484/613799

  • PASS Summit for SQL Starters

    - by Davide Mauri
    I’ve received a buch of emails from PASS Summit “First Timers” that are also somehow new to SQL Server (for “somehow” I mean people with less than 6 month experience but with some basic knowledge of SQL Server engine) or are catching up from SQL Server 2000. The common question regards the session one should not miss to have a broad view of the entire SQL Server platform have some insight into some specific areas of SQL Server Given that I’m on (semi-)vacantion and that I have more free time (not true, I have to prepare slides & demos for several conferences, PASS Summit  - Building the Agile Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2012 - and PASS 24H - Agile Data Warehousing with SQL Server 2012 - among them…but let’s pretend it to be true), I’ve decided to make a post to answer to this common questions. Of course this is my personal point of view and given the fact that the number and quality of session that will be delivered at PASS Summit is so high that is very difficoult to make a choice, fell free to jump into the discussion and leave your feedback or – even better – answer with another post. I’m sure it will be very helpful to all the SQL Server beginners out there. I’ve imposed to myself to choose 6 session at maximum for each Track. Why 6? Because it’s the maximum number of session you can follow in one day, and given that all the session will be on the Summit DVD, they are the answer to the following question: “If I have one day to spend in training, which session I should watch?”. Of course a Summit is not like a Course so a lot of very basics concept of well-established technologies won’t be found here. Analysis Services, Integration Services, MDX are not part of the Summit this time (at least for the basic part of them). Enough with that, let’s start with the session list ideal to have a good Overview of all the SQL Server Platform: Geospatial Data Types in SQL Server 2012 Inside Unstructured Data: SQL Server 2012 FileTable and Semantic Search XQuery and XML in SQL Server: Common Problems and Best Practice Solutions Microsoft's Big Play for Big Data Dashboards: When to Choose Which MSBI Tool Microsoft BI End-User Tools 360° for what concern Database Development, I recommend the following sessions Understanding Transaction Isolation Levels What to Look for in Execution Plans Improve Query Performance by Fixing Bad Parameter Sniffing A Window into Your Data: Using SQL Window Functions Practical Uses and Optimization of New T-SQL Features in SQL Server 2012 Taking MERGE Beyond the Basics For Business Intelligence Information Delivery Analyzing SSAS Data with Excel Building Compelling Power View Reports Managed Self-Service BI PowerPivot 101  SharePoint for Business Intelligence The Best Microsoft BI Tools You've Never Heard Of and for Business Intelligence Architecture & Development BI Power Hour Building a Tabular Model Database Enterprise Information Management: Bringing Together SSIS, DQS, and MDS SSIS Design Patterns Storing Columnstore Indexes Hadoop and Its Ecosystem Components in Action Beside the listed sessions, First Timers should also take a look the the page PASS set up for them: http://www.sqlpass.org/summit/2012/Connect/FirstTimers.aspx See you at PASS Summit!

  • SQL SERVER Get Latest SQL Query for Sessions DMV

    In recent SQL Training I was asked, how can one figure out what was the last SQL Statement executed in sessions. The query for this is very simple. It uses two DMVs and created following quick script for the same. • Alternative to TOP in SQL Server and Oracle.

    SELECT TOP 5 * FROM EMP ORDER BY SALARY; Above query works in SQL Server. This returns top 5 employees. The problem with this query is it doesn't work with Oracle. In Oracle you would need to write the query as follows. SELECT * FROM EMP WHERE ROWNUM<=5 ORDER BY SALARY If you are looking for a query which runs in both Oracle and SQL Server. Please use below one. select * from (SELECT row_number() over( ORDER by SALARY) as rank, EMP.* FROM EMP) s1 where s1.rank <= 5; span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • Row Versioning Concurrency in SQL Server

    The optimistic concurrency model assumes that several concurrent transactions can usually complete without interfering with each other, and therefore do not require draconian locking on the resources they access. SQL Server 2005, and later, implements a form of this model called row versioning concurrency. It works by remembering the value of the data at the start of the transaction and checking that no other transaction has modified it before committing. If this optimism is justified for the pattern of activity within a database, it can improve performance by greatly reducing blocking. Kalen Delaney explains how it works in SQL Server.

  • COM+ Connection Pooling Doesn't Appear to be working on SQL Server 2005 Cluster

    - by kmacmahon
    We have a COM+ Data Layer that utilized Connection Pooling. Its deployed to 3 clusters, 2 SQL Server 2000 and 1 SQL Server 2005 environment. We noticed today that our monitoring software is reporting Thousands of Logins per minute on the SQL Server 2005 box. I did some tracing in both environments and profiler is reporting this for the 2000 boxes: sp_reset_connection SQL CALL sp_reset_connection SQL CALL sp_reset_connection SQL CALL and this for the 2005 box: Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Is there some sort configuration for SQL Server 2005 different from SQL Server 2000 that we might be missing that would be creating this issue?

  • SCOM, Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008

    - by Jacques
    Hi there, I'm trying to setup SCOM(System Center Operations Manager 2007 (SCOM) – Platform Monitoring) on my Server 2008 machine using SQL Server 2008 running on the same machine. When I check my prerequisites I get problem on SQL and Active Directory components. (I'm running SQL server 2008 and Server 2008 with active directory not installed) Errors: 1.Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 required. Details: SQL Server 2005 SP1 is the next version of SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, is a complete data and analysis platform for large mission-critical business applications. The link provided in the resolution column is a trial version of the product and is not supported by the Microsoft SQL Server team In order to install active directory needs to be present. Details:Setup failed to verify the presence of Active Directory for this server. I've got a couple of questions I need answering, hope someone can help. Do I need to install Active Directory for SCOM to work? Can I run SCOM with an SQL 2008 Database? How do I get pass these problems?

  • Is the master database backup crucial for restoring MS SQL server in the event where you have to res

    - by Imagineer
    I have been advise by Commvault partner support to turn off the backup of the master database as the backup failed due to the log file being lock. The following is the advise given: "The message is caused by Commvault’s inability to backup the master database’s transaction log. If this is happening intermittently its possible that something is locking the transaction log, preventing SQL iData agent from accessing the log. Typically the master database is just a template and is not used by any applications (applications that do require the use of an SQL database create their own) so there should be no harm in preventing it from being backed up You can do this by nominating NOT to back it up in the primary copy for the SQL data agent" The following is the error that I get. sqlxx SQL Server/ SQLxx N/A/ System DBs 19856* (CWE) Transaction Log N/A 01/08/2010 19:00:16 (01/08/2010 19:00:18 ) 01/08/2010 19:03:15 (01/08/2010 19:03:14 ) 1.44 MB 0:01:11 0.071 2 0 1 ITD014L2 Failure Reason: • ERROR CODE [30:325]: Error encountered during backup. • SQL Server 2008 R2 - Cannot create database snapshot

    - by Chris Diver
    Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 Enterprise SQL: SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise X64 I have a default SQL Server instance, the SQL Server service account is running as a domain user. I am trying to create a database snapshot in the directory where the mdf files are stored. The T-SQL syntax is correct. The file system is NTFS. The error message I get is: Msg 1823, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 A database snapshot cannot be created because it failed to start. Msg 5119, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot make the file "e:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDB.ss" a sparse file. Make sure the file system supports sparse files. The local SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER group has Full Control permission on the folder where I am trying to create the snapshot. I can fix the problem in two ways, neither of which are suitable. Add the SQL Server service (domain) account to the local Administrators group and restart the SQL service. Grant the local SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER group Full control on E:\ I have tried to change the owner of the DATA directory to SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER to no avail. I have no issue creating a new database Why can I not create a snapshot by giving permission only on the DATA folder? Update 23/09/2010: I have tried mrdenny's suggestion with no luck (but learned something new in the process), I suspect the problem may be due to the fact that the domain is a windows 2000 domain running in mixed mode. I had to install hotfix KB976494 for Server 2008 R2, as the SQL Server 2008 R2 installer would not verify the service account correctly with the domain. I noticed that Server 2000 isn't a supported operating system for SQL 2008 R2 but cannot find anything that would suggest it shouldn't work in a 2000 domain. I dis-joined the test server from the domain and changed the service accounts to the local service account and I still have the same issue. I will try to re-install the server without joining the domain and without the hotfix and see if the issue persists.

    - by shinya
    I'm having problem connecting to MS SQL Server (2012 Express) after accessing a database through IIS (web site). I can access the data through web site no problem, but I can't access the data from any other programs (i.e SSMS) until I reboot the SQL server. It seems that the connection stays open even if I close a browser. Here is error message I'm getting Unable to open the physical file "C:---------". • Function to Calculate Median in Sql Server

    - by Yaakov Ellis
    According to MSDN, Median is not available as an aggregate function in Transact-Sql. However, I would like to find out whether it is possible to create this functionality (using the Create Aggregate function, user defined function, or some other method). What would be the best way (if possible) to do this - allow for the calculation of a median value (assuming a numeric data type) in an aggregate query?

  • Linq To Sql Concat() dropping fields in created TSQL

    - by user191468
    This is strange. I am moving a stored proc to a service. The TSQL unions multiple selects. To replicate this I created multiple queries resulting in a common new concrete type. Then I issue a return result.ToString(); and the resulting SQL selects have varying numbers of columns specified thus causing an MSSQL Msg 205... using (var db = GetDb()) { var fundInv = from f in db.funds select new Investments { Company = f.company, FullName = f.fullname, Admin = f.admin, Fund = f.fund1, FundCode = f.fundcode, Source = STR_FUNDS, IsPortfolio = false, IsActive = f.active, Strategy = f.strategy, SubStrategy = f.substrategy, AltStrategy = f.altstrategy, AltSubStrategy = f.altsubstrategy, Region = f.region, AltRegion = f.altregion, UseAlternate = f.usealt, ClassesAllowed = f.classallowed }; var stocksInv = from s in db.stocks where !fundInv.Select(f => f.Company).Contains(s.vehcode) select new Investments { Company = s.company, FullName = s.issuer, Admin = STR_PRS, Fund = s.shortname, FundCode = s.vehcode, Source = STR_STOCK, IsPortfolio = false, IsActive = (s.inactive == null), Strategy = s.style, SubStrategy = s.substyle, AltStrategy = s.altstyle, AltSubStrategy = s.altsubsty, Region = s.geography, AltRegion = s.altgeo, UseAlternate = s.usealt, ClassesAllowed = STR_GENERIC }; var bondsInv = from oi in db.bonds where !fundInv.Select(f => f.Company).Contains(oi.vehcode) select new Investments { Company = string.Empty, FullName = oi.issue, Admin = STR_PRS1, Fund = oi.issue, FundCode = oi.vehcode, Source = STR_BONDS, IsPortfolio = false, IsActive = oi.closed, Strategy = STR_OTH, SubStrategy = STR_OTH, AltStrategy = STR_OTH, AltSubStrategy = STR_OTH, Region = STR_OTH, AltRegion = STR_OTH, UseAlternate = false, ClassesAllowed = STR_GENERIC }; return (fundInv.Concat(stocksInv).Concat(bondsInv)).ToList(); } The code above results in a complex select statement where each "table" above has different column count. (see SQL below) I've been trying a few things but no change yet. Ideas are welcome. This is SQL Server 2000.
