• Environment Award for AgroSense Java Farm Management System

  Beating IBM's energy information system and Evoswitch's modular data central hall, Ordina's AgroSense, a farm management system for precision agriculture, received the prestigious IT Environment Award in the Netherlands yesterday. AgroSense is an agricultural services platform created in Java on the NetBeans Platform. It looks like this: Among other things, the team has been investigating whether and how to integrate JavaFX games into the AgroSense platform, as well as other JavaFX-oriented effects. So instead of tapping in my imagination and creating dummy users (or reusing past information I already used in other demos), I thought I would appeal to the amazing community: Send me an email with the following information. • REST authentication S3 like hmac sha1 signature vs symetric data encryption.

  Hello stackers, I was arguing about an S3 like aproach using authorization hash with a secret key as the seed and some data on the request as the message signed with hmac sha1 (Amazon S3 way) vs an other developer supporting symetric encryption of the data with a secret key known by the emiter and the server. What are the advantage of using signed data with hmac sha1 vs symetric key other than the fact that with the former, we do not need to encrypt the username or password. What would be the hardest to break ? symetric encryption or sha1 hashing at la S3 ? If all big players are using oauth and similar without symetric key it is sure that there are obvious advantages, what are those ?

• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? • Switch back to previously selected tab after the activity is recreated

  In my TabActivity the user may be asked to switch to browser activity for OAuth phase, and if the phase takes too much time, my activity will be killed. After the user switches back to my activity, its onCreate() method is invoked again and tabs are recreated. So I would like to know if there is any simple way to switch back to previous tab, and keep the tab as what it was. For example, one of the tab views contains a ViewSwitcher child, and I want to switch back to the switched view after recreating the activity.

• Tracking logged in vs. non-logged in users in Google Analytics

  I am building a social media site that is similar is structure to twitter and facebook.com where unauthenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see a login + sign-up page, and authenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see their timeline. My question is, what is the best practice (using Google Analytics) for tracking these two different types of users who are viewing completely different content but are visiting the same URL. I tried searching the Google Analytics docs but couldn't find what they suggested for this scenario. Perhaps I just don't know what keywords to search for. Thanks in advance for any help.

  This past week the CodePlex team worked on several fixes to improve the stability of our TFS infrastructure, including applying TFS 2012 Update 1. We apologize for the recent downtime. • Membership systems for MVC4 that support RavenDB

  I create a lot of quick "proof of concept" MVC apps and I actually found the SimpleMembership provider that shipped with the MVC4 templates to be very handy since it gets me up and running with user registration & OAuth in a matter of minutes. But...I've started to use RavenDb (on RavenHQ for a lot for my projects). So, I starting trying to implement my own "custom membership provider" based on the ExtendedMembershipProvider and while doing that I realized that didn't make much sense. I later stumbled upon 2 interesting projects that try to solve this exact problem: WorldDomination.Web.Auth: https://github.com/PureKrome/WorldDomination.Web.Authentication MemFlex: https://github.com/OdeToCode/Memflex Both are pretty interesting recent efforts and was wondering if these are the only ones being built right now. I'm essentially looking for nuget pkg that I can drop into a MVC4 app, connect to my RavenDb and be done. I'm willing to build this thing but don't want to duplicate any efforts that are already in motion. Thx!

• Confusion with cookie session token and oauth2.0 don't know where to go anymore

  Hi guys, I'm completely confused, frustrated and nothing seems to make sense and work any more. I' dev some iframe fb app and i've been using the javascript sdk (FB.Init()) to get the access_token, but doesn't always work, sometimes i'm already logged into FB and doesn't works... Did some reading, and read also that there is problems using cookies in iframes in Opera and IE, so I was thinking in use the OAuth 2.0 but i'm not sure how via facebook sdk c# and now I'm now completely lost, don't know if i still need to use the javascript FB.Init(). Documentation out there is poor and unclear, a lot of stuff refers to old code, and after hours of reading, jumping on examples, i'm completely messed up and confused. Can some, please, point/explain/enlightening me about this? Thanks a lot guys, appreciated! Merry christmas!

• Logging out of Facebook invalidates offline_access token

  I'm getting an offline access token like this: https://graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?scope=offline_access&client_id=MYCLIENTID&redirect_uri=MYREDIRECTURI&client_secret=MYSECRET&code=MYCODE obviously the MYCLIENTID and stuff have been changed for the sake of this post. Anyway, as soon as the user logs out of facebook, the key seems to no longer be valid. Am I not requesting offline_access properly (there's still an "expires" value on it, should there be if it is actually getting offline access), or is that just how it works? If it's the latter, how can I get a key that will persist, regardless of if the user logs out of facebook? I'm sure this is possible, because Tweetdeck can still write to Facebook, even though I'm currently logged out.

So aside from C# I want to learn a new language. Time is precious and I want to give my focus to a language which have a future. My language list is: Scala (Powerful usage in Twitter) Go (Getting popular and channels are pretty awesome) Erlang (Stable server side programs. Used at Whatsapp) You can give advice for the above or you can give me a better option. My only exception is Objective-C. I don't want to get in that one. Thanks

• Hello Again, San Francisco

  From the moment I got to the airport in Amsterdam, I've been bumping into JavaOne pilgrims today. Finally got to my hotel, after a pretty good flight (and KLM provides great meals, which helps a lot), and a rather long wait at customs (serves me right for getting seat 66C in a plane with 68 rows). And, best of all, on Twitter I've been seeing a few remarks around the Duke's Choice Awards for this year. The references all point to the September - October issue of the Java Magazine, where page 24 shows the following: So, from page 24 onwards, you can read all about the above applications. What's especially cool is that three of the above are applications created on top of the NetBeans Platform! That's AgroSense (farm management software), MICE (NATO system for defense and battle-space operations), and Level One Registration Tool (UN Refugee Agency sofware for managing refugees). Congratulations to all the winners, looking forward to learning more about them all during the coming days here at the conference.

• What are the parameters that let businesses choose .NET or Java over other languages/frameworks? [on hold]

  Some of the biggest enterprise applications such as HR software, Sales and ERP, are written in .NET or Java. Also, Governments online solutions such as paying parking fines, and universities courses registration systems are all in .NET or Java. On the other hand, Facebook, Google and Wikipedia, are not using .NET or Java so much (Google uses at least both Java and Python). Twitter also was using Ruby for a long time, as well as Python. These websites work on much more data and at larger scales in terms of users and performance than any enterprise applications, yet still these companies have chosen a different path. What are the parameters driving such decisions? Note This question is not about why do you prefer x over y! or why those people are using this. The question is primarily asking about the parameters that makes Java Or .NET becomes better suite in enterprise applications based on Performance, Reliability, Scalability etc.
