Hi! I have huge database (kinda wordnet).
And want to know if it's easier to use Cassandra instead of MySQL|PostrgreSQL
All my life I was using MySQL and PostrgreSQL and I could easily think in terms of relational algebra, but several weeks ago I learned about cassandra and that it's used in facebook and twitter.
Is it more convenient?
What DBMS are usually used nowadays to store social net's data, relationships between objects, wordnet?
I have a javascript that displays a generated text into a div:
document.getElementById('phrase').innerHTML = phrase;
PHRASE_TEXT_GETS_SHOWN_HERE
Basically I'm trying to set up a link that will take the text and post it to twitter with a link:
Clicky for tweety
How can I include the generated text in the link?
Hello,
I am using a PHP/MySQL login script that sends a new user an activation email. When a new user registers, the info is put into MySQL pretty much instantly, but then it takes about 4 minutes for the activation email to arrive in the new user's inbox.
It seems like sites like Facebook and Twitter can get out an activation email instantly when a new user registers. Is there anything that I could do to make the activation email that I'm using arrive instantly or really fast?
Thanks in advance,
John
Hi,
I have been searching for a way to get the json data from a URl (for example: http://search.twitter.com/trends.json) and display it in a listview. Couldnt get a perfect example to get it done. Can anyone plz help me out by getting the solution and providing a good example of how to do it...
I wanted to add a tab to the user edit page ie user/%/edit/foo, and was using the twitter module as a model. After much spelunking and stepping through with a debugger, I realised that I needed to add a hook_user function in my module so that the %user_category part of the menu router path would work.
It's now functioning as expected, but I don't really have a solid idea of what I just did, and haven't found a good explanation anywhere.
Can anyone explain to me what it's about?
I am trying to set up Omniauth as described in this Railscast. While it works with Twitter, I am unable to get it working with Facebook. I also set up 'http://localhost:3000' as siteurl and 'localhost' as domain but still see the following error message in the browser:
Invalid redirect_uri: Given URL is not allowed by the Application configuration.
Does anyone of you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.
I get ' top tweets ' from twitter as an RSS feed in xml format .
There is a guid field in that xml format.
There is a long 11 digit number at the end of guid field , is it unique for every tweet ?
Hey guys
This file isn't executing in any browser other than firefox on mac. Added everything i can think to get it sorted.
http://samhorner.co.uk/dev/samhorner/
Clicking on the twitter bar should close it, then open it again when you click on it again, only one click works on the other browsers. The blue box is a flash area in the background.
Thanks or the help.
Cheers
Sam

It provides The Social Source Code and Plain Text Sharing Service.
You can post any source code here ,
All pastes and comments will post to twitter .
I'm not sure the usefulness of this project , so I need your feedback to improve it ,
if you think it is useless , please tell me directly, I'll close it soon.

I have a multiline textbox which can contain only 500 characters. Now i want to show the user the number of characters left as they are typing into the textbox as is the case when we use twitter.

I'm loading the Bootstrap CSS on my page from the CDN bootstrapcdn.com
<link href="//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/twitter-bootstrap/2.3.2/css/bootstrap-combined.min.css" rel="stylesheet">
How can I test if the stylesheet was loaded, and if not provide a local fallback?
I do not want to wait for jQuery or other libraries to load before doing the test; I want all CSS to be loaded on the page first.
Hello,
I know it's not really a programming question but I don't know where to ask it.
Should i use a captcha in my sign up form ?
Facebook, twitter, foursquare, gowalla etc... don't use one (or not a visible one). Is there an invisible catpcha on theses sites ?
Thank you
Background Job gets mentioned a lot but all the tutorials I've seen seem to indicate that its for queuing jobs which are created by some external event such as a user clicking "Send mail".
But what about when you have code that needs to scheduled to run every 30 seconds to listen for new messages from twitter?
Normally rake is recommended for set in stone schedules but it inst so efficient for frequent jobs as it has to to load the entire rails app each time.
Can anyone recommend anything for this situation?
I have a form posting data to a php page. Then I have the PHP page echoing the data aswell as posting it to twitter. Whenever In a word with an apostrophe it adds a back-slash right before it. So I type in "I'm going to the park" it echos "I\'m going to the park" what's going on and how do I fix it? Thanx :)

using simplexml to parse a feed, but I want to grab the date of the oldest item in the feed. Does anyone know how to do it? Thanks
$rss = simplexml_load_file("http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?lang=en&q=foobar&rpp=100&page=1");
I want to run multiple Google Chrome application windows logged into the same web site (Twitter.com, say), each with different credentials. Is this possible? If so, how?
My initial testing shows that multiple Chrome app windows are not sufficiently isolated to do this. Logging into the second account logs me into the second account in both windows, suggesting that they are sharing information just as two Chrome tabs might.
Hi,
It's possible to know if a MySQL server is overloaded (with PHP), and if it's overloaded show a static page (something like Twitter's fail whale)? How can I do it?
Thanks!
I am using Authlogic-Connect for third party logins. After running appropriate migrations, Twitter/Google/yahoo logins seem to work fine but the facebook login throws exception:
SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed
The dev log shows
OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError (SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed):
app/controllers/users_controller.rb:37:in `update'
Please suggest..
I'm looking to do some sentence analysis (mostly for twitter apps) and infer some general characteristics. Are there any good natural language processing libraries for this sort of thing in Ruby?
Similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/870460/java-is-there-a-good-natural-language-processing-library but for Ruby. I'd prefer something very general, but any leads are appreciated!
I am creating a chat application which requires that users be able to send and receive sms messages through a web interface. It would be somewhat similar to the text messaging service available in yahoo mail or in aol instant messenger. The situation is this: Given the high quantity of messages that would be sent and received, paying on a per message basis is not economically feasible. How is it that sites such as yahoo, aim, and twitter can send and receive unlimited sms messages?
Essentially, I am looking for a way to send and receive unlimited sms from my computer. Below is a list of some approaches I've come up with but have run into problems with as well. If just one of the approaches can be utilized effectively, then I am fine.
As a note on the nature of my application: I will only be sending messages to users that explicitly sign up for the service and permit the receiving of messages. They can unsubscribe at any time. This is to prevent spam.
I am aware of software such as Kannel which allows one to connect to a providers smsc gateway. However, this adds the risk of not being approved by the provider which would be unacceptable. Is there any way to significantly mitigate this risk? Utilizing a gateway provider eliminates this risk, but adds the issue of per message pricing.
I am also aware of email to sms. However, I have done some testing with that and it appears that this method results in many messages being undelivered or delivered VERY late. If it weren't for that, this approach would have been ideal. Is there any way to negotiate with carriers to remove me from their filters (considering the nature of my service as stated before)?
I could use a gsm modem, but even with an "unilimited" plan on a sim card, there are still limits (around 100,000 messages or so). Furthermore, from my understanding, gsm modems are capable of only sending out around a dozen messages per minute. I need to be able to send out as much as several hundred messages per second. During the first 2 months, around 10 messages per second would suffice.
There are ways to send out ads with messages to cover the per message costs. However, this is a deal-breaker since it has a high chance of tarnishing the quality of service. Furthermore, I know it is possible to do it without such ads since yahoo, aim, and twitter do not send ads with their messages.
I am consuming the Twitter API and want to convert all URLs to hyperlinks.
What is the most effective way you've come up with to do this?
from
string myString = "This is my tweet check it out http://tinyurl.com/blah";
to
This is my tweet check it out <a href="http://tinyurl.com/blah">http://tinyurl.com/>blah</a>
@EZGraphs on Twitter writes:
"Lots of online csvs are zipped. Is there a way to download, unzip the archive, and load the data to a data.frame using R? #Rstats"
I was also trying to do this today, but ended up just downloading the zip file manually.
I tried something like:
fileName <- "http://www.newcl.org/data/zipfiles/a1.zip"
con1 <- unz(fileName, filename="a1.dat", open = "r")
but I feel as if I'm a long way off.
Any thoughts?
