  As suggested I upgraded. Same as before except now not even the speaker control in the application bar. Please help. Background: I have Ubuntu 9.10. Headphones appear to work fine. External speakers - nothing. There are so many sound preferences I have no idea what or which combination. Went to terminal and ran alsamixer which seems to recognize my sound card, though the driver is not listed in System Administration Hardware Drivers; the only driver listed is my graphics card. Setup: I have a Dell 8250. Speakers are plugged into the SB live card. Woofer and 2 speakers using transformer.

• Create a wireless Network in Ubuntu 10.04?

  Hello., Whenever i need to copy some files and couldnt find a pen drive, [ i dont have bluetooth enabled in my lap], I create a new ad hoc (wireless) network in windows and share the necessary files on the network and share files with the other system. Now, i want to do the same with Ubuntu. But, i couldn't. I could create a new network, but i am not able to chare or send or even dont know how to access the system connected to the network. • Ubuntu based VPN server behind NAT router?

  I have a small intranet- and file-server inside our company, which can only be reached from inside our own network. I'd like to be able to reach the intranet and files on the server from outside the network, however I don't really like the idea of completely opening security by forwarding the ports on our NAT-router, so I'd prefer to enable a VPN possibility for this. So I have a router, which is the DHCP server and has NAT function, and I have an Ubuntu Server with the files and intranet on it. How do I configure these two so that I can make a VPN connection with my network in order to reach the server? thanks in advance for any answer!

• Map ftp servers as network drives in Ubuntu Linux

  Hi everybody! I'm a new Linux user, just switched over from Windows. I've got a couple FTP servers I connect to on a regular basis through sftp. I was wondering if there was a way to, as we say in windows, map them as network drives in Linux, so I can just copy stuff into a drive or folder and it will just map it to the server by ftp. That would be pretty cool. Anybody know how this would be possible, and how to do it? I Can't see to find anything in the literature. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. Thanks!

• SugarCRM CE Won't Install on Ubuntu 10.10

  I have a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.10 server with a working LAMP installation. I downloaded SugarCRM and browsed to its directory to open the installer (via Firefox). The installer appears fine, I accept the license agreement, and it proceeds to check file permissions. It advises that several directories need looser permissions (chmod 766), and I adjust them accordingly. After making the changes, I click "recheck" and the page just reloads as blank (white). There are no errors visible, nothing in the server logs (Apache/PHP) and installation cannot continue. I'm able to get back to the installation tool by readjusting permissions back to my default (0755 for directories, 0644 for files). All files/folders are owned by root and the www-data group. Any idea about what's wrong?

• Protect individual sites on Ubuntu/Apache server

  Hi,?? I need to set up a Apache server configuration for some client sites that run under the same Ubuntu 9.10 machine. All sites are allowed to run PHP, Python and Ruby on Rails. I do not control the source code of these sites and so I need to set up a filter in order to prevent one user to reach files on another users account.?? If I run a script to list files in "/" from one account, I can browse some files and directories in the actual server root. I want to set the root for each account to /var/usersite.com/www/ instead so that listing files in "/" shows the files in the client's root. ??How is this most easily configured??? • My ubuntu server is losing connectivity, require assistance troubleshooting

  I have two server monitoring tools that check the uptime of my Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server. Over the last month both of these tools have reported the following outages: Jan - 15mins: self recovery Jan - 5 mins: self recovery Feb - 15mins: I managed to be online when this happened and logged into my control panel to find that my server was shutdown. I manually restarted it only because I was online. I wonder if it would have restarted? I have contacted my VPS provider (webbynode) who could not see any any problems with their VPS infrastructure for the February outage. I have also checked the following log files to see if there are any anomalies that could be the cause of the outages; I am unable to see anything related to the server shutdown (Feb) in these logs: /var/log/auth.log /var/log/apache2/error.log /var/log/syslog /var/log/kern.log /var/log/boot /var/log/messages Could anyone suggest any other things I should look out for, such as additional system logs? I just added bootlogging through /etc/default/bootlogd

• Ubuntu 11.04: No Audio Output

  I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 earlier this week and I'm having trouble getting my audio online. It was working fine in 10.04 and all the resources I can find on troubleshooting seem to be fairly dated so I'm not sure if they apply. CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio] Analog Stereo Duplex Playing a WMA file shows 0.00db output when I mouse over the sound controller in the status bar. Obviously, no output from my speakers. I tried adjusting the profile, thinking I might have the wrong one. That seems to have made things worse. Where mouse over originally said something along the lines of "Oxygen HD Audio," it now reads "Dummy Output." Selecting "Test Speakers" in sound preferences crashes the dialog. Any pointers would be great.

  I have iso image for Ubuntu 11.0.4 on a CD. My OS is windows XP. I have 3 partions c, E and F. Windows is installed on C, and F has data. E is empty drive. Now, after I start installation , I choose the third option. Then click forward and I am shown three figures -- /dev/sda1 52427(total)/50931(used) /dev/sda5 52427(total)/3221(used) -- surprised, since it should be empty. I had used wubi to install earlier but have uninstalled. /dev/sda5 215206(total)/37545(used) Now, it means I need to choose sda5. Now how should I go about creating 3 partions for /(root), /home and /swap. Click edit partion and give size for each of them?

  I am trying to configure name server on Ubuntu just for learning. I have followed this tutorial. After configuring bind9 I have restarted it and works well. I have no registered domain name and public IP, so I have used a random domain name(khalidiitdu.com) that is not registered. When I dig khalidiitdu.com, it shows status: NXDOMAIN. If I use nslookup command, it shows ** server can't find khalidiitdu.com: NXDOMAIN. Now question is: Is registered domain mandatory to configure bind9 within a LAN? If not please suggest me alternative ways. Thanks.....

  I have questions related to the host name in Ubuntu EC2 instances. I have a IPS elastics for hosts that want to be seen from the internet and I have pointed out in the DNS entries with the computer name to those ips. For example, for elastic IP 11.11.11.11 DNS I added my computer name www.example.com. But I also want to rename the machines which they have, because it is a parameter of the service running on them (ejabberd server). EC2 instances are restarted when changing the host name, and seen on the client requesting dhcp hostname to dhcp Amazon. My question is ... What is the safest method to change the hostname: dhcp client modify, insert the command in rc.local, etc. ..? Could I have a problem with the internal resolution of traffic between EC2 instances? thanks

  Hi, I'm on a Host Europe VPS running Ubuntu 8.04 server. PHP version is 5.2.4. Now there is an application (Moodle 2.0) that needs at least PHP 5.2.8. I don't want to upgrade serverwide to PHP 5.2.8 because that might impair other applications (e.g. Plesk). The FAQ at Host Europe suggest to install an additional PHP 5.2.8 in /opt/php and I think I can handle that with $ dpkg -i php_..._.deb --root /opt/php (Is that correct, by the way?) • No Drivers in Ubuntu 9.1!!!

  I have a Lenovo G550 and I installed Ubuntu on it through Windows and I have no drivers. No sound, no wireless. I previously had installed it through Windows Vista with no problems at all. I now run Windows 7 and cannot seem to get it to function properly. I tried installing the recommended drivers to make sure the proper ones were installed and that still did nothing. Any one have ANY idea what could be happening? I just don't feel like dealing with it.

Can someone explain this difference? But what is more important: I'd like to know how much memory a process is really using. I don't want to know the virtual memory size, but rather the resident memory plus swap of a process. I have also tried to output the format param "sz" of 'ps', but the sum of this is to high (5450 MB) (param 'size' gives 8323.45 MB). Are there any other options? I really want to use this, to determine which programs/processes are eating to much memory (and swap), to kill them, because hibernate might not be working if the swap partition is to little.

• Speeding Up Search On Ubuntu File Server Accessed Through Windows

  I run an Ubuntu box as a media server, which I use to either share files (copy and paste off of the network drive), or stream to my computer (which runs Win7), or to my xbox. I have a lot of files on there, especially music. Currently when I'm searching for a file, I just use Windows' search, which can be quite slow. I was wondering if there were better ways to search from my Windows box? I'd prefer not to SSH in to the box and use find or something like that. Is there any way to speed up Windows' search? • Having problems with Grub2 booting Ubuntu from my External Hard Drive

  I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive but it won't boot on my laptop. what do i do? i did some reading and traced the source of the problem to grub2. Apparently, grub2 doesn't use the device's UUID, and uses the linux directory instead (/dev/sdf2). This means that whenever i plug my E-HDD into a system that has a different number of drives connected to it, i won't be able to boot without editting the boot command. I don't understand it too well but that's what i got from what i read. Is there anyway to fix this?

They have it set up so that you can log into any computer in the lab, and it automatically loads your desktop, home directory, etc, which makes it so all computers in the lab look the same to you, regardless or which one you're using.   Hii all i am trying to change the port no of my tomcat server installed in ubuntu. for this i have changed the file server.xml and made a change there as: <Connector port="8081" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" URIEncoding="UTF-8" redirectPort="8443" /> But the problem is that whenever i try to open the localhost:8081 it is working fine but when i tried to open localhost:8080 then it is still accessible. So please explain this why this is happening. Secondly when i made the default port to 80 then localhost:80 or localhost then it was not accessible. So please explain this why this is happening.   I'm trying to connect using PPTP to my VPS. At first, I got the problem that my connection (Wlan, which is what I use to connect to the Internet) goes "limited" (I can't connect to the Internet) when I connect to the VPN. Then, I used to get some long message, something like you might be trying using L2TP. Then now it's back again to the "limited" problem. What's the solution to that problem? One thing I'm not sure of is what I put as my local IP address in "sudo nano /etc/pptpd.conf" Is it 127.0.0.1?   I'm running Apache2 with SSL on Ubuntu 10.04LTS. Chrome gives me this annoying warning when I inspect the certificate: The connection had to be retried using SSL 3.0. This typically means that the server is using very old software and may have other security issues. The relevant part of the apache config looks like: SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /etc/ssl/... SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/ssl/... SSLCACertificateFile /etc/ssl/... SSLProtocol -all +SSLv3 +TLSv1 The last line I added to try to address this problem, but it's not working. Any advice on properly enabling TLS?

• Remote access to a KVM Ubuntu virtual server

  I've just setup an ubuntu virtual server and everything seems to be working fine. I used KVM to get it working with a bridged network. I've given the virtual server a static ip address on my network. I don't seem to be able to connect to the virtual machine though from outside my network. If I'm on my own network it all works fine, I can ping the ip and connect to it. The virtual server can ping other machines and sites on the internet. I changed the port forwarding rules on my router to forward any connections on a specific port to the virtual server ip address thinking that was the problem, but it was still the same. Is there something I'm missing here which is blocking outside connections to the virtual machine? Thanks.

• Ubuntu 10 installer stops after asking for username and password

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10. It's running fine, until I get to the step where it asks me to specify my name, computer name, user name and password. I have filled in all those fields and all of them display a green checkmark. However, the Forward button doesn't enable. The installer continues copying files, and when it's done it says Ready when you are... in the status bar. Still, Forward is disabled. Anyone know what the problem could be?

  Hi there, after i did a partial upgrade my screen went blank. I think i used an onboard graphics card but i cannot be sure. Please advise me. i tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 at startup and did a apt-get upgrade and apt-get update. Didn't work. Am very frustrated after spending 3 days to get ubuntu to work for it to kill my screen the moment i did a first update. Please help.
