• Asus P8P67 Rev. 3.1 Motherboard issues powering on and saving settings

  Edit: New Information Have some updated information from the old question below: So basically my issue right now is somewhat similar, but I've been able to rule out a couple of things. I don't think this has anything to do with light on the motherboard. No matter what lights are on/off on the motherboard when the computer is off, they don't affect this issue. The main power LED on the Mobo is always lit when the power supply is turned on, and that's what matters anyway. Even when the main power LED is on, the PC will NOT boot up the first time I hit the power switch. I have to go reset the power supply (make all lights turn off on the Mobo and back on), and THEN hit the power switch. Then everything boots up. Also, the BIOS settings are reset every time this happens. Asus Tech Support told me to try jumping the power with something metal to try and rule out that it's a problem with the connectors getting power, or if it's a problem with the case power switch pins - haven't done that yet though. Any ideas? This is a lot simpler than it was before when I thought it had to do with certain LED indicators for RAM, EPU, etc. Original Question So I built my new desktop just about 3 weeks ago. I've been having a few issues which I think are all related to my motherboard, an Asus P8P67 Revision 3.1, but I'm not 100% sure as this is really the first from-scratch build I've ever done. I've posted these questions on the Asus forums, Asus Tech Support, and the Corsair forums as well as I thought it might have something to do with my power supply at one point. None of these avenues have solved my issue until now completely, so I thought I'd come here to see what you guys think. Here's what's happening: My computer is off, and I go to power it on. I press the power switch on the case (Antec Nine Hundred), and nothing seems to happen. Upon further inspection, I see that what this actually does is simply turn on the EPU LED on my motherboard, but doesn't actually boot anything up. I then have to go and flip the main power switch on the power supply off and back on. What this does is turn off all lights on the Motherboard after a few seconds, and turn them all back on (including the EPU LED that was off before I hit the power switch the first time). Now, hitting the power switch works. The machine boots up fine, and starts going through the boot up process. As a side note: My Motherboard is set to "Force BIOS", and every single time I change this to do the opposite, the next time my computer boots up that change reverts itself. I think this may be due to the fact that I am doing the hard reset on the power supply each time, but I'm not sure. I had thought that the Motherboard would keep its BIOS settings unless you did something to the Mobo itself - so this may be a related issue, or something else completely. That's basically it. Once it's on, it's on. It works fine, recognizes all of my hardware, and runs great. All fans/lights in the case work great, and I'm getting standard readings. The next time I go to shut the computer down however, I can expect the same exact process getting it up and running, including being forced to go into BIOS and exit again before I can load Windows. Another side note: If I power on my computer using the power switch DIRECTLY after shutting it down, it powers right back on (I think this is because the EPU LED light doesn't have time to turn off). It looks as if as long as the EPU LED is lit up on the motherboard before I hit the power switch on the case, the thing will boot up fine (although this doesn't explain the "Force BIOS" issue, at least it's something). • Restoring windows path on Windows 7

  Issue:You changed the windows path and made a mistake and now want to reset it.Solution:In short, you can't. If you restore to the system default, you will loose any paths that were appended when you or the manufacturer installed software and drivers. • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

  I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

• I can't click on some things and other problems

  I have some issues with my Ubuntu 12.04 . When I open Ubuntu Software Center, the program opens and than just disappears just when it is opened. My Ubuntu 12.04 won't install any updates because of this error in the picture. Worst of all: I can't click on anything except for programs that from Ubuntu: for example I can't browse the internet via Firefox or Chromium... I can't click on folders. I can't click on things in my Thunderbird mail program. But I can click on Update manager for example... It is just clicking that doesn't work, when I try 'clicking' something with using the tab-button and enter I can click on something - in every case. But that's just too annoying to do. Oh sorry guys I had some screenshots that illustrate the problems, but I can't get them off the 'problem pc ubuntu 12.04' about which I am talking... it's so sad

• Do search engines rank internal redirects negatively?

  A client is in the late stages (code complete) of a website redesign and unfortunately hasn't implemented 301 redirects to point high traffic pages to the new URL's. As I understand it our only option at this point is to create redirects within the CMS. Our CMS allows us to do this: www.mysite.com/category/current-page.html will redirect to www.mysite.com/new-category-name/new-page.html The site now uses custom logic on our 404 page to check this list of redirects and if one exists forwards the user to the new-page.html I understand that using 301 redirects would be the correct way to maintain our page rank but I think that would require a code change which isn't possible. Question How will search engines respond to this? Will they wait until the redirect happens and allow us to keep our page rank (authority, trust, etc) or will they see the 404 page and down-rank us? Worst case...will they make our new-page.html start from a rank of "0"? Thanks for your help.

• Is deserializing complex objects instead of creating them a good idea, in test setup?

  I'm writing tests for a component that takes very complex objects as input. These tests are mixes of tests against already existing components, and test-first tests for new features. Instead of re-creating my input objects (this would be a large chunk of code) or reading one from our data store, I had the thought to serialize a live instance of one of these objects, and just deserialize it into test setup. I can't decide if this is a reasonable idea that will save effort in long run, or whether it's the worst idea that I've ever had, causing those that will maintain this code will hunt me down as soon as they read it. Is deserialization of inputs a valid means of test setup in some cases? To give a sense of scale of what I'm dealing with, the size of serialization output for one of these input objects is 93KB. • Ubuntu gets slower by the day

  Ive noticed that Ubuntu has been getting slower and slower to boot, launch programs, etc. I installed 12.04 about 4 months ago,now 12.10, running on a quad-core Q8300 Intel, 4GB Ram, and an 80GB WD IDE drive. For some reason (ever since 11.04), Ive noticed after installation, the speed is good. The longer I have the OS installed, every bootup gets slower and slower, launching programs get slower, frame rates change radically(onboard GF9400 gets anywhere from 60fps down to 12 in worst cases). I would think maybe the HD is the issue, however I installed 11.10 on a 160GB SATA, and the same thing occurred. Looking at system resources, I'm holding steady at 1GB memory usage (I have 4GB, but it's actually showing 3.6GB, dunno why), no swap usage, and using right around 4% on cpu currently. HD capacity is only 28% used. Has anyone else ran into this issue? I love Ubuntu to death, but using other distros other than Ubuntu, I dont have this problem.

• Cannot save all of the property settings for this Web Part.

  I would like to display all the items of custom content type of Animals in a SharePoint content query WebPart. After choosing the appropriate values in the web part editor and click on Save I got this error: Cannot save all of the property settings for this Web Part. There is a problem with one or more of the field values below. But when I examine all the values below , it does not flag any error information. I finally manage to locate the error flag after I expand the presentation section. I then delete the text in the Link textbox , now I can save the settings. However , I think the error message should have been more specific so that users can quickly locate the error. The worst part for this is that I did not even change anything in the presentation section, I merely configure the Source in the Query section. Well, I guess I am still new to SharePoint, I just have to get used to these generic error message ):

• Design Patterns for SSIS Performance (Presentation)

  Here are the slides from my session (Design patterns for SSIS Performance) presented at SQLBits VI in London last Friday. Slides - Design Patterns for SSIS Performance - Darren Green.pptx (86KB) It was an interesting session, with some very kind feedback, especially considering I woke up on Friday without a voice. The remnants of a near fatal case on man flu rather than any overindulgence the night before I assure you. • How accurate is header information received?

  Please see What could keep a javascript from loading properly on a page? In the header it shows that it is coming from IIS 6.0. How accurate is this information? Also this vendor (which is the worst I have worked with) made us go through a huge server switch process. Did they "upgrade" to W2003 IIS6.0? What would be the reason for a "new" server to be running this old of a version of IIS? Am I missing something?

• Is it possible to work with a dedicated server in XNA?

  Hi I want to release my XNA game to the XBOX platform, but I'm worried about the networking limitations. Basically, I want to have a dedicated (authoritative) server, but it sounds like that is not possible. Which is why I'm wondering about: Using port 80 web calls to php-driven database Using an xbox as a master-server (is that possible?) I like the sound of #1, because I could write my own application to run on the xbox, and I would assume other users could connect to it similar to the p2p architecture. Anyone able to expand on theory #2 above? or #1 as worst-case scenario?

• How to work with edge Texture

  Im not sure if i use the right terms, but im not able to find something to start with. Im trying to develop a little HTML5 game. I have a ground with a texture and now I want to make a surrounding texture. The texture is an image wich should be bend around the ground. At the moment im using easelJS for display my images/textures. So im looking for some sort of Tutorial/Script/Advice. Im not even sure if I can bend a image in javascript. So the worst case I can think of is split the image in 100 pieces and then put it back together and rotate each piece. for example like this:

• Problems in detecting pen drive

  First of all, I don't have an issue with detecting my pen drive on 32-bit ubuntu 12.04. It can detect my pen drive very fast when plug in. Then, I bought a laptop installed with windows 7 64-bit operating system. I have decided to installed ubuntu alongside with win7. To be precise, I installed uBuntu 12.04.3 64-bit. It appears that every time I plug in my pen drive, it is either very slow automatically mount. It is even worst that the pen drive won't mount when plug in to usb 3.0 port. Anyone? UPDATE: My laptop can detect pen drive now either 3.0 or 2.0 port. The question is why the pen drive very slow shows up?

• Convert Microsoft Word documents (.doc/x) into HTML files

  Does anybody knows of a good application to get it done quickly and efficiently ? I bought Word Cleaner but the results are merely sufficient and I need go over all the generated html files to clean tons of useless injected tags like <strongH</strong<strongell</strong<strongo </strong<emWor</em<emld</em Most of the articles displayed on a website I manage are based on documents written on MS Word by people how has little idea of what are margins for or ordered/unordered lists, foot/end notes etc and I cannot make them use something else. Does anyone has a tip to help me handle those pages more efficiently than going over them to correct and apply my CSS style ? NB: Just for the record, using "Save as HTML DOC" in Word is faaar worst than Word cleaner

• What steps should be taken to ensure that an open source database gets ready for production?

  I am considering using GridSQL in a production environment. However, I do have some indications that it is not ready. One is that it got excluded by the offering of EnterpriseDB a while ago, and the forums seem to report a few wrong results and relatively severe bugs. The alternatives to GridSQL, however cost around 100.000$ to buy, so I was thinking to utilize some of this money to ensure that GridSQL gets ready for production. At the same time, I could risk spending 50.000$ and months of work on the development of GridSQL, just to discover that the design was flawed and that a complete rewrite is needed. Then I would have to buy the commercial alternatives to GridSQL and the existence of my startup would be at risk. Question What steps would you take to ensure that there is as little risk as possible that the worst case scenario described above would happen? It is unrealistic that I could do much testing nor code review/coding myself (I am also not the best developer), so please describe where to find the guys that would need to do the work.

• is OpenID really that bad?

  I have seen this question on Quora where lots of people seem to agree that OpenID is bad, even going as far as stating that: OpenID is the worst possible "solution" I have ever seen in my entire life to a problem that most people don't really have Then I've seen articles and tweets referencing that question saying that OpenID has lost, and Facebook won. It's sad to read as I quite like the OpenID (or at least idea behind it). I literally hate getting yet another login/password for page (I'll forget it anyway) - it's a pretty serious issue for me and I know lots of people with the same problem. Thus I thought that OpenId is a great solution but I'm not sure anymore. So the question is should I still bother to implement OpenID or it's not worth it? What is the most robust and convenient (from the user perspective) way to identify and authenticate an user?

• How do you usually manage callbacks in Java using Swing library?

  I'm quite new to the Java Swing programming, and GUI development as well. As a beginner, I'm currently reading Design Pattern, but finding what I'm looking for is quite hard, most of the times. So far, I've never had huge problems defining a view hierarchy - I just use to subclass component from component. But the hard-to-do here is how managing callbacks, which often become hard to maintain due to the hard code. During my last projects, I tried to separate GUI, Listener and Callbacker objects which cooperated together, but in this way it was really hard adding new features. So, which kind of best patterns or best practices do you tend to use when trying to maintain, add new features or even worst avoid to hard-code classes which manage callbacks method in this kind of frameworks (mainly Java Swing)?

• Why Does Unity lag Often That I have To Manually Shutdown/Restart my Core i3 Laptop?

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu then do did some upgrades. After my next restart when I try to open Ubuntu Software Center it took about 20 seconds for the window to load then 10 more seconds before it became click able. While doing some installation of software, Unity lags like hell that every time I click any application it takes a few seconds before I can see it. Even GEdit take a lot of time to load. The worst part was when I was doing nothing to my computer. Even on that part, my computer lags. My Laptop is a Brand New Core i3 with 2GB of RAM. Unity should run perfectly on that kind of machine right? BTW: I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 for about 5 times now and still nothing changed.
