  • Installing Python in Windows XP

    My work PC has restrictions that stop me from adding programs to the start menu so when I try to install Python using the Python 2.6.5 Windows installer it can't complete as it tries to add a shortcut to my start menu. Is there a way around this? I.e another way of installing without the need for a shortcut? I've tried Python portable but as it doesn't add anything to the registry it can't be detected.

  • "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly" when trying to install MySQL on Win7 x64.

    Hi, I've run into a brick wall trying to install MySQL v5.5 on my machine. My PC is Windows 7 x64, Enterprise edition. MySQL installs fine, but when I run the "MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard", it pauses forever on the step "Start Service" (I can let it run for 30 minutes with no response). If I go into services, I see that the "MySQL" service hasn't started, and if I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start MySQL Service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." I've tried the following: Turning off firewall. Uninstalling all antivirus software. Installing / reinstalling 32-bit version of MySQL. Installing / reinstalling 64-bit version of MySQL. Uninstalling, deleting the contents of "C:\program files\MySQL" and "C:\program files (x86)\MySQL", reinstalling. Checking to see that there is no rogue services named MySQL???? (from a previous install). Checking that port 3306 is not used by an alternate program. Changing the default port that MySQL uses. Checking for "my.ini" and "my.ini.cnf" in "C:\windows" (nothing there but that can cause a problem). Running both MySQL installer, and configuration wizard, in "Adminstrator mode". Turning off UAC. Installing with defaults, not changing anything. Rebooting my machine (about 6 reboots so far). Opening up port 3306 in the firewall (both TCP and UDP, inbound and outbound). Swearing at the klutz of a programmer who designed MySQL so you can't even install it (as if that would help!) My machine is working 100% in every other way. InfiniDB (a MySQL compatible database) installs 100%, as does Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft SQL Server, etc, etc. Your advice on how to work around this? p.s. Here is the screen it got stuck on for 15 minutes until I killed the process: Update 2010-12-20 Tried MySQL v5.1, it didn't work either. Its amazing - if you type "mysqld /?", or "mysqld -help", it doesn't give you any help. And, if you try to restart the service manually, it doesn't display any error messages. Could it be any more unhelpful? Update 2010-12-21 Installed MySQL 6.0 alpha, and it worked. However, I'd rather not use an alpha release, given that the "stable" release is anything but :( Update 2010-12-21 Found http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-troubleshooting.html, dealing with troubleshooting under Windows.   • Windows 7 Folder contents in Jump List

    Hi! I'd like to know if there's a possibility in Win7, to simply drag folder to the taskbar (which, afaik cannot be done in normal way) and display it's contents using jump list. Example: You drag desktop folder to the taskbar, and jumplist, is it's contents. I know about applications like JumpLaunch, but I do not want to manually modify anything in order to display folder contents.

  • WinPE, Startnet.CMD and passing variables to second batch file not working

    I don't know scripting or PowerShell (yes I need to learn something). I'm not an expert batch file maker either. I have a WinPE flash drive which I used to deploy OS images. I have the WIM, drivers and anything needed else outside the WinPE environment to ensure that Updates, changes are easier for me to make. I use the "STARTNET.CMD" batch file which is part of the WinPE. The reason to go through the letter drives is that the WinPE always gets the X letter drive assigned. The flash drive itself can receive a random letter which always changes. My deployment menu is located on the flash drive it self and not inside the WinPE. This is so that if I need to make a change I don't have to re-do the WinPE. I am able to locate the "menu.bat" batch file and launch it. I use a variable to capture the letter drive. I call the second batch file named "menu.bat" and pass the variable to it. When the second batch file loads, I believe that I am calling the variable correctly. If I break out of the batch file I can echo the variable and see the expected reply. The issue is that I can't use the variable to work with anything on the second batch file. In my test, I can get this to work over and over. When it runs from the real USB flash drive it does not work. I removed comments from the second batch file to make it smaller. My issue is that files below all get a message stating that the system cannot find the path specified.   • How do I remove the ServerSignature added by mod_fcgid?

    I'm running Mod_Security and I'm using the SecServerSignature to customize the Server header that Apache returns. This part works fine, however I'm also running mod_fcgid which appends "mod_fcgid/2.3.5" to the header. Is there any way I can turn this off? Setting ServerSignature off doesn't do anything. I was able to get it to go away by changing the ServerTokens but that removed the customization I had added.

  • Apache server randomly stopped working yesterday. How can I fix it?

    I use Apache version 2.2.11 through WampServer to host a website. Every time during the last week I tried to connect to localhost it went through and everything was fine. Now all of a sudden I get errors. I didn't change the configuration or anything as far as I know, it just stopped working for no apparent reason. As I said before, it's been working fine. Any way I can get it back up and working again?

    hi, i will get an ibm x3500 in the next days and wondered which linux i should use. i tend to use ubuntu 10.04 server, haven't heard anything bad about it and i'm a big debian fan. there will be a raid 5 powered by the ibm hardware raid controller (don't know which one). is it possible to monitor and manage it wit hthe ubuntu 10.04 server distro? or should i go another way and choose something like redhat (haven't used it though...)? thanks in advance regards

  • Computer experiencing slowdowns and lockups despite low cpu useage

    my setup i5-2300 nvidia gtx 550 ti 6 gigs ram 600 w ocz modular psu recently reformatted and already experiencing drastic slowdown as soon as windows comes up, including repeated lockups with multiple various programs reporting that they are not responsive, then recovering after 10-30 seconds. ive checked memory and hard drive both of which come out fine. despite my plethura of worthless antiviral software im forced to assume that my illicit downloading practices have lead me into some comp trouble that i cant seem to determine. i have used ccleaner, search and destroy and malware bytes, all of which have found nothing to indicate what is causing this massive slowdown. in addition according to my resource manager my computer is operating at a load of only 30-50 percent CPU useage and 60 ram useage but taking 5-10 seconds to load files and open folders, and repeated lockups of multiple programs, especially firefox which seems to go unresponsive every 2-3 minutes. any help would be appreciated, i used a program called OTL by old timer, but cant make any sense of the results i was given. any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thank you for taking the time to read this i have avast but it didnt even find anything when i had it do a full system scan, so im thinking its clueless(also nortons, avg, and ad-aware). i also have mse but it has yet to complete a full scan it takes so long (i left it on last night but when i woke up my computer had a problem and had to restart). my hard drive has 300 gigs out of 1tb open and i already used hd tune pro, which said my harddrive was fine and its not a ssd. also im a noob at comps and only have the hd that is currently inside the computer in addition im not sure if studdering is the issue im suffering. my problem is that during my typing of these responses firefox has gone "not responsive" at least 5 times, each for times of about 5-10 seconds. when i try to control alt delete to bring up windows task manager it took 20 seconds. essentially its that my computer goes super slow at bringing up anything, or taking any action whatsoever that opens a program or file and has repeated incidents where i cant even click on whatever im trying to do because it locks up. the confusing thing about these incidents is that its right after restarting where there are minimal programs running and the computer and memory load is light.

  • putty output screen too small?

Everything works just fine, but I'm getting this tiny screen with output, I can resize it of course, but the content is still in small box [ content doesn't resize ] I've tried to change the number of columns and rows in properties, but it didn't change anything. The same thing is with cygwin client.

    I've just taken over managing the network for a small charity, and am finding internet access very flaky - we keep getting "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." errors (HTTP Error 12031 according to the Windows network diagnostic tool). It doesn't seem to be anything to do with our ISP since it also affects internal traffic (even requests to an Apache instance on my localhost!) Adjusting the MTU setting in the Windows XP registry sometimes seems to help for a few minutes after rebooting, but the problem always returns.

When I run this script on a Mac, the server wakes up. When I run it from Windows 7 (32-bit Ultimate) it doesn't do anything (note that the script DOES run, I added a debug raw_input() to confirm).

    I'd like to debug an issue I'm having with a linux (debian stable) server, but I'm running out of ideas of how to confirm any diagnosis. Some background: The servers are running DL160 class with hardware raid between two disks. They're running a lot of services, mostly utilising network interface and CPU. There are 8 cpus and 7 "main" most cpu-hungry processes are bound to one core each via cpu affinity. Other random background scripts are not forced anywhere. The filesystem is writing ~1.5k blocks/s the whole time (goes up above 2k/s in peak times). Normal CPU usage for those servers is ~60% on 7 cores and some minimal usage on the last (whatever's running on shells usually). What actually happens is that the "main" services start using 100% CPU at some point, mainly stuck in kernel time. After a couple of seconds, LA goes over 400 and we lose any way to connect to the box (KVM is on it's way, but not there yet). It's also running mysql (almost read-only, 99% cache hit), which seems to spawn a lot more threads during the system problems. During the day it does ~200kq/s (selects) and ~10q/s (writes). The host is never running out of memory or swapping, no oom reports are spotted. We've got many boxes with similar/same hardware and they all seem to behave that way, but I'm not sure which part fails, so it's probably not a good idea to just grab something more powerful and hope the problem goes away. Applications themselves don't really report anything wrong when they're running. I can run anything safely on the same hardware in an isolated environment. What can I do to narrow down the problem? Where else should I look for explanation?
