  • Good style for handling constructor failure of critical object

    - by mtlphil
    I'm trying to decide between two ways of instantiating an object & handling any constructor exceptions for an object that is critical to my program, i.e. if construction fails the program can't continue. I have a class SimpleMIDIOut that wraps basic Win32 MIDI functions. It will open a MIDI device in the constructor and close it in the destructor. It will throw an exception inherited from std::exception in the constructor if the MIDI device cannot be opened. Which of the following ways of catching constructor exceptions for this object would be more in line with C++ best practices Method 1 - Stack allocated object, only in scope inside try block #include <iostream> #include "simplemidiout.h" int main() { try { SimpleMIDIOut myOut; //constructor will throw if MIDI device cannot be opened myOut.PlayNote(60,100); //..... //myOut goes out of scope outside this block //so basically the whole program has to be inside //this block. //On the plus side, it's on the stack so //destructor that handles object cleanup //is called automatically, more inline with RAII idiom? } catch(const std::exception& e) { std::cout << e.what() << std::endl; std::cin.ignore(); return 1; } std::cin.ignore(); return 0; } Method 2 - Pointer to object, heap allocated, nicer structured code? #include <iostream> #include "simplemidiout.h" int main() { SimpleMIDIOut *myOut; try { myOut = new SimpleMIDIOut(); } catch(const std::exception& e) { std::cout << e.what() << std::endl; delete myOut; return 1; } myOut->PlayNote(60,100); std::cin.ignore(); delete myOut; return 0; } I like the look of the code in Method 2 better, don't have to jam my whole program into a try block, but Method 1 creates the object on the stack so C++ manages the object's life time, which is more in tune with RAII philosophy isn't it? I'm still a novice at this so any feedback on the above is much appreciated. If there's an even better way to check for/handle constructor failure in a siatuation like this please let me know.

  • how to filter data from xml file for displaying only selected as nodes in treeview

    - by michale
    I have an xml file named "books.xml" provided in the link "http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms762271(v=vs.85).aspx". What my requirement was to disaplay only the <title> from xml information as nodes in tree view. But when i did the following coding its displaying all the values as nodes like "catalog" as rootnode, book as parent node for all then author,title,genre etc as nodes but i want only root node catalogue and title as nodes not even book. Can any body guide me what modification i need to do in the exisitng logic for displaying title as nodes OpenFileDialog dlg = new OpenFileDialog(); dlg.Title = "Open XML document"; dlg.Filter = "XML Files (*.xml)|*.xml"; dlg.FileName = Application.StartupPath + "\\..\\..\\Sample.xml"; if (dlg.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK) { try { //Just a good practice -- change the cursor to a //wait cursor while the nodes populate this.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor; //First, we'll load the Xml document XmlDocument xDoc = new XmlDocument(); xDoc.Load(dlg.FileName); //Now, clear out the treeview, //and add the first (root) node treeView1.Nodes.Clear(); treeView1.Nodes.Add(new TreeNode(xDoc.DocumentElement.Name)); TreeNode tNode = new TreeNode(); tNode = (TreeNode)treeView1.Nodes[0]; //We make a call to addTreeNode, //where we'll add all of our nodes addTreeNode(xDoc.DocumentElement, tNode); //Expand the treeview to show all nodes treeView1.ExpandAll(); } catch (XmlException xExc) //Exception is thrown is there is an error in the Xml { MessageBox.Show(xExc.Message); } catch (Exception ex) //General exception { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } finally { this.Cursor = Cursors.Default; //Change the cursor back } }} //This function is called recursively until all nodes are loaded private void addTreeNode(XmlNode xmlNode, TreeNode treeNode) { XmlNode xNode; TreeNode tNode; XmlNodeList xNodeList; if (xmlNode.HasChildNodes) //The current node has children { xNodeList = xmlNode.ChildNodes; for (int x = 0; x <= xNodeList.Count - 1; x++) //Loop through the child nodes { xNode = xmlNode.ChildNodes[x]; treeNode.Nodes.Add(new TreeNode(xNode.Name)); tNode = treeNode.Nodes[x]; addTreeNode(xNode, tNode); } } else //No children, so add the outer xml (trimming off whitespace) treeNode.Text = xmlNode.OuterXml.Trim(); }

  • c++ dynamic_cast error handling

    - by Nazgob
    Is there any good practice related to dynamic_cast error handling (except not using it when you don't have to)? I'm wondering how should I go about NULL and bad_cast it can throw. Should I check for both? And if I catch bad_cast or detect NULL I probably can't recover anyway... For now, I'm using assert to check if dynamic_cast returned not NULL value. Would you accept this solution on a code review?

  • Best way to detect duplicates when using Spring Hibernate Template

    - by Dean Povey
    We have an application which needs to detect duplicates in certain fields on create. We are using Hibernate as our persistence layer and using Spring's HibernateTemplate. My question is whether it is better to do so an upfront lookup for the item before creating, or to attempt to catch the DataIntegrityViolation exception and then check if this is caused by a duplicate entry.

  • Android Bluetooth Fails to Pair

    - by CaseyB
    I am having a problem getting my devices to pair in Android. If I go into the settings and pair them manually I can get them to connect using the following code: Server // Make sure the device it discoverable mServerSocket = mAdapter.listenUsingRfcommWithServiceRecord("Moo Productions Bluetooth Server", mUUID); mState = State.ACCEPTING; BluetoothSocket socket = mServerSocket.accept(); mServerSocket.close(); connected(socket); Client Set<BluetoothDevice> pairedDevices = mAdapter.getBondedDevices(); BluetoothSocket socket = null; // Search the list of paired devices for the right one for(BluetoothDevice device : pairedDevices) { try { mState = State.SEARCHING; socket = device.createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(mUUID); mState = State.CONNECTING; socket.connect(); connected(socket); break; } catch (IOException e) { socket = null; continue; } } But if the devices hadn't already been paired it gets out of the foreach without connecting to a valid socket. In that case I start discovering. // If that didn't work, discover if(socket == null) { mState = State.SEARCHING; mReceiver = new SocketReceiver(); mContext.registerReceiver(mReceiver, new IntentFilter(BluetoothDevice.ACTION_FOUND)); mAdapter.startDiscovery(); } // ... Later ... private class SocketReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver { @Override public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) { if(BluetoothDevice.ACTION_FOUND.equals(intent.getAction())) { try { // Get the device and try to open a socket BluetoothDevice device = intent.getParcelableExtra(BluetoothDevice.EXTRA_DEVICE); BluetoothSocket socket = device.createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(mUUID); mState = State.CONNECTING; socket.connect(); // This is our boy, so stop looking mAdapter.cancelDiscovery(); mContext.unregisterReceiver(mReceiver); connected(socket); } catch (IOException ioe) { ioe.printStackTrace(); } } } } But it will never find the other device. I never get a pairing dialog and when I step through I see that it discovers the correct device, but it fails to connect with this exception java.io.IOException: Service discovery failed. Any ideas as to what I'm missing?

  • Problem with tcp server when converting to service

    - by djerry
    Hello lads, I'm working on monitoring some object (cdr-packets). I'm setting up a tcp-server and am listening on port 50043 for the packages. The program as a console application is working just fine, my server is working like it should and i'm receiving the packets. When i try to use it as a service, i cannot seem to get a client connected to my server. Is there something i need to change to deploy this as a service? Code below is from my application: this is my service class where i start protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { server = new TcpServer(); server.StartServer(); } this is the constructor of TcpServer public TcpServer() { try { _server = new TcpListener(IPAddress.Any, 50043); } catch (Exception) { _server = null; } } this is the method i call after initialising the class public void StartServer() { if (_server != null) { // Create a ArrayList for storing SocketListeners before starting the server. _socketListenersList = new ArrayList(); // Start the Server and start the thread to listen client requests. _server.Start(); _serverThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(ServerThreadStart)); _serverThread.Start(); // Create a low priority thread that checks and deletes client // SocktConnection objcts that are marked for deletion. _purgingThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(PurgingThreadStart)); _purgingThread.Priority = ThreadPriority.Lowest; _purgingThread.Start(); } } this is the thread that keep checking if any client tries to connect private void ServerThreadStart() { // Client Socket variable; Socket clientSocket = null; TcpSocketListener socketListener = null; while (!_stopServer) { try { // Wait for any client requests and if there is any request from any //client accept it (Wait indefinitely). clientSocket = _server.AcceptSocket(); // Create a SocketListener object for the client. socketListener = new TcpSocketListener(clientSocket); // Add the socket listener to an array list in a thread safe fashon. lock (_socketListenersList) { _socketListenersList.Add(socketListener); } // Start a communicating with the client in a different thread. socketListener.StartSocketListener(); } catch (SocketException se) { _stopServer = true; } } } when for the first time a packet waits to be read, and i get to "clientSocket = _server.AcceptSocket();", it throws an exception (service, not very good debugable) Does anyone recognize this problem or can help me? Thanks in advance

  • How to validate hostname in perl?

    - by embedded
    Hi, I need to come up with a regular expression to validate hostname against RFC-1123 and RFC-952. Right now I'm using this: ^(?=.{1,255}$)[0-9A-Za-z](?:(?:[0-9A-Za-z]|\b-){0,61}[0-9A-Za-z])?(?:\.[0-9A-Za-z](?:(?:[0-9A-Za-z]|\b-){0,61}[0-9A-Za-z])?)*\.?$/ but this does not do the trick since it does not catch a. as invalid hostname. How do I enhance the reg expression to comply with those RFCs? Thanks

  • PHP Strange error "0:". Possible Object syntax problem?

    - by Michael Stone
    I'm trying to transfer a site from one hosting company to another. I was using 000webhost until the client had hosting and a domain. Now that the client has their domain and hosting, using FatCow.com, I can not for the life of me, debug my PHP code. I'm not getting any errors. I have a successful DB connection. If you procedurally display data, it works, but when I try to use my original objects, something is breaking and just returns "0:". I have all errors on. On old server where the site worked: PHP Version 5.2.11 MySQL Version: 5.0.81 On new server where I get the "0:": PHP Version 5.2.12 MySQL Version 5.0.32 I've setup a test page to test just the output of the variables with the DB connection. Below is my code: <?php error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors', '1'); try { $link = mysql_connect('connectionstring', 'username', 'password'); if (!$link) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } else{ $db = mysql_select_db('a8210422_lit'); } if($db){ include_once('admin/classes/clsPOW.php'); include_once('admin/classes/clsProviders.php'); $pow = new POW(); $prov = new Providers(); $new = $pow->getNew(); $newAr = $new->val(); $get = $prov->getAll($newAr['providerId']); $getAr = $get->val(); $img = $getAr['image']; $name = $getAr['provider']; $desc = $getAr['description']; $zip = $getAr['zip']; $web = $getAr['link']; if($zip==0){ $zip = "Unavailable"; } print $img; print $name; print $desc; print $zip; print $web; } else{ print 'fail!'; } } //catch exception catch(Exception $e) { echo 'Message: ' .$e->getMessage(); } ?>

  • unable to capture picture using camera in j2me polish?

    - by SIVAKUMAR.J
    I'm, developing a mobile app in j2me.Now im converting it into j2me polish. In my app I capture a picture using camera in mobile phone. It works fine in j2me. But it does not work fine in j2me polish. I cannot resolve it. The code snippet given below public class VideoCanvas extends Canvas { // private VideoMIDlet midlet; // Form frm Form frm=null; public VideoCanvas(VideoControl videoControl) { int width = getWidth(); int height = getHeight(); // this.midlet = midlet; //videoControl.initDisplayMode(VideoControl.USE_DIRECT_VIDEO, this); //Canvas canvas = StyleSheet.currentScreen; //canvas = MasterCanvas.instance; videoControl.initDisplayMode( VideoControl.USE_DIRECT_VIDEO,this); try { videoControl.setDisplayLocation(2, 2); videoControl.setDisplaySize(width - 4, height - 4); } catch (MediaException me) {} videoControl.setVisible(true); } public VideoCanvas(VideoControl videoControl,Form ff) { frm=ff; int width = getWidth(); int height = getHeight(); // this.midlet = midlet; Ticker ticker=new Ticker("B4 video controll init"); frm.setTicker(ticker); //Canvas canvas = StyleSheet.currentScreen; videoControl.initDisplayMode(VideoControl.USE_DIRECT_VIDEO,this); ticker=new Ticker("after video controll init"); frm.setTicker(ticker); try { videoControl.setDisplayLocation(2, 2); videoControl.setDisplaySize(width - 4, height - 4); } catch (MediaException me) {} videoControl.setVisible(true); ticker=new Ticker("Device not supported"); frm.setTicker(ticker); } public void paint(Graphics g) { int width = getWidth(); int height = getHeight(); g.setColor(0x00ff00); g.drawRect(0, 0, width - 1, height - 1); g.drawRect(1, 1, width - 3, height - 3); } } In normal j2me the above code works correctly. But in j2me polish videoControl.initDisplayMode(VideoControl.USE_DIRECT_VIDEO,this) here this refers to VideoCanvas (which extends from javax.microedition.lcdui.Canvas). But it throws an "IllegalArgumentException - container should be canvas" like that. How to solve the issue?

  • Should the PHP community start using more descriptive Exceptions?

    - by fireeyedboy
    I work with Zend Framework a lot and I just took a peek at Kohana, and it strikes me as odd that this is a typical scenario in these frameworks: throw Some_Componenents_Exception( 'invalid argument' ); Where I believe this wouldn't be mouch more useful: throw Some_Components_InvalidArgumentException( 'whatever discription' ); Because it is easier to catch. I suspect, but immediately admit it's prejudiced, that the former practice is common in the PHP community. Should we, the PHP community, start using these descriptive types of expections more?

  • How do I create a Spring 3 + Tiles 2 webapp using REST-ful URLs?

    - by Ichiro Furusato
    I'm having a heck of a time resolving URLs with Spring 3.0 MVC. I'm just building a HelloWorld to try out how to build a RESTful webapp in Spring, nothing theoretically complicated. All of the examples I've been able to find are based on configurations that pay attention to file extensions ("*.htm" or "*.do"), include an artificial directory name prefix ("/foo") or even prefix paths with a dot (ugly), all approaches that use some artificial regex pattern as a signal to the resolver. For a REST approach I want to avoid all that muck and use only the natural URL patterns of my application. I would assume (perhaps incorrectly) that in web.xml I'd set a url-pattern of "/*" and pass everything to the DispatcherServlet for resolution, then just rely on URL patterns in my controller. I can't reliably get my resolver(s) to catch the URL patterns, and in all my trials this results in a resource not found error, a stack overflow (loop), or some kind of opaque Spring 3 ServletException stack trace — one of my ongoing frustrations with Spring generally is that the error messages are not often very helpful. I want to work with a Tiles 2 resolver. I've located my *.jsp files in WEB-INF/views/ and have a single line index.jsp file at the application root redirecting to the index file set by my layout.xml (the Tiles 2 Configurer). I do all the normal Spring 3 high-level configuration: <mvc:annotation-driven /> <mvc:view-controller path="/" view-name="index"/> <context:component-scan base-package="com.acme.web.controller" /> ...followed by all sorts of combinations and configurations of UrlBasedViewResolver, InternalResourceViewResolver, UrlFilenameViewController, etc. with all manner of variantions in my Tiles 2 configuration file. Then in my controller I've trying to pick up my URL patterns. Problem is, I can't reliably even get the resolver(s) to catch the patterns to send to my controller. This has now stretched to multiple days with no real progress on something I thought would be very simple to implement. I'm perhaps trying to do too much at once, though I would think this should be a simple (almost a default) configuration. I'm just trying to create a simple HelloWorld-type application, I wouldn't expect this is rocket science. Rather than me post my own configurations (which have ranged all over the map), does anyone know of an online example that: shows a simple Spring 3 MVC + Tiles 2 web application that uses REST-ful URLs (i.e., avoiding forced URL patterns such as file extensions, added directory names or dots) and relies solely on Spring 3 code/annotations (i.e., nothing outside of Spring MVC itself) to accomplish this? Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks very much for any help.

  • Outlook Crashes with Event ID 1000

After installing the addin one of the user's outlook crashes when a contact is opened, i.e, when ItemProperties of the contact are read.Some theses properties are read using MAPI.There is no exception being logged even though we have try/catch and logging in all methods. The event log has following message The description for Event ID 1000 from source Microsoft Office 11 cannot be found Source : Microsoft Office 11 The following information was included with the event: outlook.exe 11.0.8312.0 4a403990 msvcr80.dll 8.0.50727.3053 4889d619 0 0001500a

  • Multiple login locations for an online app.

    - by Goro
    Hello, I am working on a browser based application that will have many users. The catch is that every user should have their own customized login page, but the actual application is the same for everyone, and needs to be in a central location. What is the most secure way of doing this? Would it make more sense to have a copy of the application for each user, and keep the database centralized? The projected number of users is not very high, probably around 20-80. Thank you,

Currently value of this field is sending as String and i'd like to no parse this string in controller. Also, could you give me idea - if task with submitted id is not found - what is best way to catch this situation - validation in controller or what?

  • C#, introduce a DragOver delay

    In my application I catch a DragOver event and then perform an action. I'd like to wait for half a second before performing the action, the action should not be performed after that delay if the drag operation has ended. The only way I could think of to implement this feature is something like this: Function DragOver Event If TimerTimeReached Then PerformDragAction Else If Not TimerStarted StartTimer End End Function Function DragLeave Event If TimerStarted StopTimer End End Function Is there a better way to perform this operation?
