• Lendle Connects Kindle Owners for Cross-Country Book Lending

  You can lend books from your Kindle library to other Kindle users but it’s not always easy to find people with books you want. Lendle is a social network for Kindle readers to share books with each other. If you have a Kindle (the physical Kindle or the software on your smartphone or computer) you can easily lend books to other Kindle users. The problem is that there is no good way for you to easily find out what books your friends have. Furthermore your friends simply may not be into books that you’re into. Enter Lendle, a free service that connects Kindle users across the US (currently the Kindle lending program is limited to US customers) so that they can share books with each other. Your real life friends may not be into vampire romance, for example, but plenty of people on Lendle are and would be happy to loan you books. The only requirements for participation in the Lendle system are: Kindle ownership (either the physical or software-based Kindle) as books you’re willing to lend out.   As part of a promotion for Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft comissioned Atari to update several classic retro games from the arcade and the Atari consoles. Fortunately for those of us looking for a retro gaming fix, you can play the games in any HTML5-enabled browser. While game play is really smooth on most games there are a few little quirks that using Internet Explorer 10 does take care of. First, if you’re not on IE10, you’ll see a little advertisement before you begin playing each game. Second, some games call on some of the new touch/motion variable functionality built into IE10 for the Windows 8 tablet experience and they’ll stall out when they reach the point in the game they need to call that variable. • UPK Basics Hands On Lab at Oracle Open World Latin America

  Orrcle Open World Latin America 2012 will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil December fourth through the sixth. There's so much to see and learn from at Oracle OpenWorld : keynotes, technical sessions, Oracle and partner demonstrations, hands-on labs, networking events, and more.  I will be presenting a hands-on lab at the show this year, Introduction to Oracle User Productivity Kit - Learn the Basics in the afternoon on Tuesday December 4th.  This nonstop one hour lab covers topics from Getting Started with UPK to the basics of creating an outline, some typical content and concluding with publishing some of the many outputs UPK is capable of.   If you are planning on attending the show, come by the lab and see what UPK is all about.  I’ll be in Sao Paulo all week to fulfill my need to extend California’s summer by another week (trip bonus) and to meet and discuss all things UPK with our customers and partners.  If you’re not registered for the show there is still time. • Flame Experiments Aboard the ISS Yield Surprising Results

  Recent flame-based experiments aboard the International Space Station yielded results scientists simply thought couldn’t happen–combustion in microgravity is a curious thing. Smithsonian magazine reports on the findings: Here on Earth, when a flame burns, it heats the surrounding atmosphere, causing the air to expand and become less dense. The pull of gravity draws colder, denser air down to the base of the flame, displacing the hot air, which rises. This convection process feeds fresh oxygen to the fire, which burns until it runs out of fuel. The upward flow of air is what gives a flame its teardrop shape and causes it to flicker. But odd things happen in space, where gravity loses its grip on solids, liquids and gases. Without gravity, hot air expands but doesn’t move upward. The flame persists because of the diffusion of oxygen, with random oxygen molecules drifting into the fire. Absent the upward flow of hot air, fires in microgravity are dome-shaped or spherical—and sluggish, thanks to meager oxygen flow. “If you ignite a piece of paper in microgravity, the fire will just slowly creep along from one end to the other,” says Dietrich. “Astronauts are all very excited to do our experiments because space fires really do look quite alien.” Hit up the link below for the full article including how NASA is applying the findings.   In a bit of market battling that benefits everyone, Barnes & Noble has slashed the price of the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight–their closest match to the Kindle Paperwhite–to $119. The new listing, in addition to showing off the lowered price, includes a not-so-subtle jab against the Kindle: “No Ads. Power adapter included.” While the Glowlight is a great little ebook reader, Barnes & Noble is on the defensive after a week of hands-on-hardware reviews of the Kindle Paperwhite left many reviewers proclaiming it king of the e-readers and heaping on mountains of praise. • Oracle Tutor: *** CAUTION to Word .docx Users ***

  Microsoft released a security update KB969604 for Office 2007 (around June 2009) This update causes document variables within Word docx files to be scrambled. This update might still be pushed out via Office 2007 updates DO NOT save files as docx using MS OFFICE 2007 until you apply the MS hotfix # 970942 available here If you are using Windows XP with Office 2003 or Office 2000 and have installed an older Office 2007 compatibility pack, documents saved as docx may also cause the scrambled document variables. Installing the 2007 compatibility pack published on 1/6/2010 (version 4) will prevent the document variables from becoming corrupt. Those on Windows 2000 may not be able to install the latest compatibility pack, or the compatibility pack may not function properly. This situation will hopefully be rectified in the coming months. What is a document variable? Document variables store data inside the document, invisible to the user. The Tutor software uses them when converting the document to HTML and when creating the flowchart, just to name a couple of uses. How will you know if a document's variables are scrambled? The difficulty in diagnosing the issue is that the symptoms can take myriad forms. There isn't a single error message or a single feature that one can point to and say, "test for the problem by doing this." The best clue about the error is seeing any kind of string in an error message that has garbage characters, question marks, xml code snippets, or just nonsense. Such as "Language ?????????????xlr;lwlerkjl could not be found." It is also possible to see the corrupted data in the footers of the Word docs. And, just because the footers look correct does not mean that the document variables are not corrupted. The corruption problem does not occur in every document variable in the document, just some of them. Often it is less than a quarter of them. What is the difference between docx files and doc files? Office 2007 uses Office Open XML formats with .docx and .docm filename extensions. - Docx is an Office Open XML word document. - Docm is a macro enabled Office Open XML document. This means the file structure behind the scenes is quite different from the binary file formats used prior to Office 2007 such as .doc, .dot, .xls, and .ppt. • Switch Gmail Icons Back to Text Labels

  If Gmail’s icon-based buttons annoy you, it’s now possible to switch them back to the old text labels with a simple settings toggle. At MakeUseOf they highlight the new option in Gmail and how you can switch back to the old button layout: So how do you make that happen? All you have to do is click on the cog button, choose “Settings”, and go to the the General tab. Scroll down to find the “Button labels” setting, and change it from icons to text. • Netflix Updates Android Tablet App; iPad Update On The Way

• Repurpose a Kobo Reader as a Weather Station
