  • Programming texts and reference material for my Kindle DX, creating the ultimate reference device?

    (Revisiting this topic with the release of the Kindle DX) Having owned both generation Kindle readers and now getting a Kindle DX; I'm very excited for true PDF handling on an e-ink device! An image of _Why's book on my Kindle (from my iPhone). This gives me a device capable of storing hundreds of thousands of pages that are full text search capable in the form factor of a magazine. What references (preferably PDF to preserve things such as code samples) would you recommend? Ultimately I would like reference material for every modern and applicable programming language (C, C++, Objective-C, Python, Ruby, Java, .NET (C#, Visual Basic, ASP.NET), Erlang, SQL references) as well as general programming texts and frameworks (algorithms, design patterns, theory, Rails, Django, Cocoa, ORMs, etc) and anything else that could be thought of. With so many developers here using such a wide array of languages, as a professional in your particular field, what books or references would you recommend to me for my Kindle? Creative Commons material a plus (translate that to free) as well as the material being in the PDF file format. File size is not an issue. If this turns out to be a success, I will update with a follow-up with a compiled list generated from all of the answers. Thanks for the assistance and contributing!   • Creating Thumbnails in Build Phase of iPhone App Xcode project?

    Hey All, I have a group of png files in my bundle; but I also want smaller versions of them to be used at my app as well. Right now I am just resizing them all manually and putting them in the bundle as well: so i might have Graphic_1.png and Graphic_1-thumbnail.png. Instead, is there anyway to do something like: at build time, take all my png assets and create 1/4 scale versions of them, and save them into the bundle as well, with the -thumbnail in the filename as above?   • Form is creating already loaded attributes in addition to new attributes, how do I ignore the first?

    In my application you: Have an admin user that signs on and that user has a role (separate model), then I use the declarative_authorization plugin to give access to certain areas. That admin user can also register new users in the system, when they do this (using Authlogic) they fill out a nested form that includes that new users' role. So what is happening is the role of the admin user is being loaded by the declarative_authorization and then the nested form using the has_many_nested_attributes is loading that existing role as well as the new role for the new user (users can have many roles). Is there some way I can tell the new User being created to ignore the role assigned to the current_user and only create the role in the form for the new user? I have looked through a lot of different things, but it seems to get more complicated that these are nested attributes. Thanks in advance.

  • How can I prevent ADO from creating multiple SPIDs?

    I'm working on an application that creates a single ADO connection and keeps it open for the lifetime of the application. I have connection pooling turned off. (Please ignore the fact that this might not be best practice for the purposes of this question). If I spawn a new thread and use the exact same ADO connection, it uses a new SPID behind the scenes. Is there anyway to ensure an ADO connection always uses the same SPID, across all threads? (For reference the application is VC++ using ADO via COM to SQL Server).

  • Creating a contact form using divs with 4 extra divs for "Corners"?

    Hi there, i have tried to create a contact form (a standard form, square in nature but with rounded corners)... I can't use the CSS3 specs so i have an image for each corner.. I have set the images on the background-image and no repeat but it seems if the div is empty then it doesn't display, is there a hack - although prefer an alternative clean method :-) So on the top level i presume i have 1 div for the Upper-Left (corner) and then the upper-middle (just has a color assigned) and then a div for the upper-right (corner) .. so i presume i need to float all these to the left??? Or am i missing something? Thanks in advance

    I'm trying to create a templated silverlight control that has a simple animation (swap a few color properties). An example would be a control that is similar to the 'questions' menu item in stackoverflow. So the consumer of the control can specify the background color and the background color for the mouseover event. I've run into the issue that I can't use template binding for a storyboard animation (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1336689/is-it-possible-to-use-templatebinding-in-a-storyboard-in-silverlight).   • Creating a Dib by only specifying the size with GDI+ and DotNet...

    I have just recently discovered the difference between different constructors in GDI+. Going: var bmp = new Bitmap(width, height, pixelFormat); creates a DDB (Device Dependent Bitmap) whereas: var bmp = new Bitmap(someFile); creates a DIB (Device Independent Bitmap). This is really not usually important, except when handling very large images (where a DDB will run out of memory, and run out of memory at different sizes depending on the machine and its video memory). I need to create a DIB rather than DDB, but specify the height, width and pixelformat. Does anyone know how to do this in DotNet. Also is there a guide to what type of Bitmap (DIB or DDB) is being created by which Bitmap constructor?

    I have a simple class that essentially just holds some values. I have overridden the ToString() method to return a nice string representation. Now, I want to create a ToXml() method, that will return something like this: <Song> <Artist>Bla</Artist> <Title>Foo</Title> </Song> Of course, I could just use a StringBuilder here, but I would like to return an XmlNode or XmlElement, to be used with XmlDocument.AppendChild. I do not seem to be able to create an XmlElement other than calling XmlDocument.CreateElement, so I wonder if I have just overlooked anything, or if I really either have to pass in either a XmlDocument or ref XmlElement to work with, or have the function return a String that contains the XML I want?

    I have a table like the one below. How can I get Excel to put borders around groups with the same number in the 4th column so that there is a border around the groups. I was thinking conditional formatting could do it but I can't think how. So I think the only option is a macro.   • Creating Thumbnails with CFImage Aborting Because of Server Load?

    I am uploading in image via a form and I want to, in addition to saving the image, save a variety of thumbnails in both png and jpg format. To do this I am using the code below. The initial image uploads fine but then, after spinning for a moment I get an error of: "Request aborted due to heavy system load." (from my host crystaltech), and none of the thumbnails have made it through. I've tried it with even just one resize (and no converts) and it still fails. What am I doing wrong?   • Android/Eclipse: Creating multiple builds with different com identifiers.

    Hi, I have an app that requires two builds - one is a demo app, the other uses the same codebase but uses a flag to introduce different functionality. The identifier must be different each time (e.g. com.siteA.appA and com.siteB.appB). However it doesn't appear to be trivial to use the refactor functionality in Eclipse to change the com identifier - all references change apart from the "import com.siteA.appA.R" reference. Is there a way to create different builds with different com identifiers/app name within Eclipse? Thanks

    I am trying to build a form where users can add a text field by clicking on a "add option" button. They can also remove added fields by a "remove option" link created on the fly by Jquery, along with the text field. My code looks like this : $(document).ready(function(){ $("#add_option").click(function(){ var form = $("form"); var input_field = '<input type="text" />'; var delete_link = '<a href="#">remove</a>'; form.append(input_field + delete_link); return false; }); $("a").click(function(){ alert('clicked'); return false; }); }); This code is not working : when I click on the "add_option" button, a new text field and the "delete_link" appear. But when clicking on the "delete_link" created by JQuery, the browser follows the link instead of launching a pop-up displaying "clicked". Any idea ? Thanks !

  • Best approach to creating a database driven Java website?

    I'm fairly new to programming and new to java, but I'd like to jump in the deep end with a little database driven website project. I've read quite a lot about requirements in the 'real world' requesting experience with Spring and Hibernate, so I have those installed on netbeans and a project created (if I hit run I get the default spring page). Now I just need a little guidance as to where to start designing my app (please tell me if I'm getting in a bit too over my head for a beginner!). Should I start off with my classes? - create all my classes as they map to my database tables and decide which attributes and methods each will require? Can anyone suggest any good books for maybe.. making a java based website from scratch (i.e. from design right through to deployment) that might be useful for a beginner? Any help appreciated thanks.

  • Why is Log4Net not creating log file in production?

    I am using VS2005, a website project, a web deployment project and Log4Net. I can use logging when I am developing locally. I can see the log files and everything is fine. When I build my website, (using the web deployment project), I use the deploy as a single DLL option. When I then check the locations of where my log files should be I cannot see any files. Is there a way to troubleshoot this. I don't think adding the debug value to the App Settings will help because I don't have a console because it is a website. EDIT I don't want the 150 rep to go to waste so one last time. I compared the internal trace from my dev environment to the trace from the production. My dev environment trace shows the call the Xml Configurator where the production one does not. I have code in the global.asax on application_start() method. I put debug code in there and it is getting called in dev but not in production. I think this is where the web deployment project is causing some issues. Does the global.asax get compiled into the single DLL? When I do a build in the deployment directory I see a global.compiled file. Must this go into the bin folder in production? Or is the global.asax code in the single DLL? Having both in the bin folder or the just the DLL didn't change anything.
