• Is there any way to set or code breakpoints conditionally?

  I've been wondering this for a while - is there a way to code/program breakpoints...? Conditionally? For example, can I specify something like - "when this variable becomes this value, break and open the debugger"? (Would be quite useful, especially in long loops when you want to debug loop execution of a late loop value.) I suppose this may be IDE-specific since debugging is implemented differently in different IDEs... I'd be interested to know how to do this in any IDE, but specifically in Eclipse and Visual Studio.

• What CPAN module can send all warnings and errors to a log file?

  I'm maintaining some website code that currently dumps all errors and warnings into the apache log. This is a problem for me as i cannot access that due to lack of root. As such I am looking to redirect all warnings and errors to a specified log file under my control. I'd like to do so without preventing those messages from going through their usual patch of execution. Now, before i spend a lot of time fiddling with the Perl internals and possibly breaking things unawares I thought I'd look for a CPAN module that does this. However, I either do not know how to properly search for this, or I am overlooking something and thus cannot find any module that seems suitable. Thus my asking here: What CPAN module would i use for this task?

• Crashing the OS X Pasteboard

  I have an application that reads in text by emulating CMD-C copy commands and reading the pasteboard - unfortunately this the only way to achieve what I need. Occasionally, something goes wrong in execution (not sure yet if it's related to the copy command or not) and the app crashes. Once in a while, this has a knock on effect on the system-wide pasteboard - any other application that is running will crash if I attempt a copy, cut, or paste. Is there a robust way to handle this - something I should be doing with the NSPasteboard before exiting? Any information on what might be happening is appreciated. • Code Profiling in the Windows Sidebar Environment

  Does anyone know of a way I can code-profile my Windows Sidebar Gadget? I've played around with the code-profiling tool in IE8's "Developer Tools" and the code-profiling included in Visual Studio 2010, but I can't find a way to include the System.* API, which my gadget relies on (as it is standard in the Sidebar environment). The gadget also relies on cross-domain AJAX requests; which is normally permitted in the Sidebar environment. By code-profiling I primarily mean: Function call count Function execution time Any ideas would be much appreciated. Regards, Matt

  Hi, I have 2 simple, but maybe tricky questions. Let´s say I have assembler instruction: MOV EAX,[ebx+6*7] - what I am curious is, does this instruction really actually translates into opcode as it stands,so computation of code in brackets is encoded into opcode, or is this just pseudo intruction for compiler, not CPU, so that compiler before computes the value in brackets using add mul and so, store outcome in some reg and than uses MOV EAX,reg with computed value? Just to be clear, I know the output will be the same. I am interested in execution. Second is about LEA instruction. I know what it does, but I am more interested wheather its real instruction, so compiles does not further change it, just make it into opcode as it stands, or just pseudo code for compiler to, again, first compute adress and than store it.

• Create iPhone app programmatically, in its entirety

  I recently became interested in iPhone app development, so I've been looking at online tutorials, and also reading a book, trying out the examples as I go along. I'm getting better, but one of the things I still find quite annoying about the usual development model is that I really have no idea what the SDK is really doing behind the scenes to make the app "work" because Apple protects me from this. For example, when I make connections on interface builder, this presumably corresponds to code being generated somewhere... Where that code is and what it does and how it works are not obvious (to me). So I'm wondering, is it possible to create an iPhone app entirely programmatically? That is, have execution start in some main method, which will then programmatically create any views, register event listeners, etc. And if yes, what are some good resources for something like this?

• Win32 call order

  Hi all, I have two windows that I send scripted input to. The procedure goes as this BringWindowToTop( window1 ); i = Build input structures( window1 ); SendInput(i); BringWindowToTop( window2 ); i = Build input structures( window2 ); SendInput(i); I was having trouble with inputs not being sent and the correct time. I put delays after each call and saw that input from the first SendInput() was processed after window2 is brought to top. Same thing at the end of the loop as well. Are SendInput calls buffered? If so, how can I make sure of a serial execution of this code? Thanks

• XQuery - problem with recursive function

  Hi all, Im new on this project and am going to write, what i thought was a simple thing. A recursive function that writes nested xml elements in x levels (denoted by a variable). So far I have come up with this, but keeps getting a compile error. Please note that i have to generate new xml , not query existing xml: xquery version "1.0"; declare function local:PrintTest($amount) { <test> { let $counter := 0 if ($counter <= $amount ) then local:PrintTest($counter) else return $counter := $counter +1 } </test> }; local:PrintPerson(3) My error is: File Untitled1.xquery: XQuery transformation failed XQuery Execution Error!   What is the rationale behind the advocated use of the for i in xrange(...)-style looping constructs in Python? For simple integer looping, the difference in overheads is substantial. I conducted a simple test using two pieces of code: File idiomatic.py: #!/usr/bin/env python M = 10000 N = 10000 if __name__ == "__main__": x, y = 0, 0 for x in xrange(N): for y in xrange(M): pass File cstyle.py: #!/usr/bin/env python M = 10000 N = 10000 if __name__ == "__main__": x, y = 0, 0 while x < N: while y < M: y += 1 x += 1 Profiling results were as follows: bash-3.1$ time python cstyle.py real 0m0.109s user 0m0.015s sys 0m0.000s bash-3.1$ time python idiomatic.py real 0m4.492s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.031s I can understand why the Pythonic version is slower -- I imagine it has a lot to do with calling xrange N times, perhaps this could be eliminated if there was a way to rewind a generator. However, with this deal of difference in execution time, why would one prefer to use the Pythonic version?

  Hello there, This code executes "handbrakecli" (a command line application) and places the output into a string: Dim p As Process = New Process p.StartInfo.FileName = "handbrakecli" p.StartInfo.Arguments = "-i [source] -o [destination]" p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = False p.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = True p.Start Dim output As String = p.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd p.WaitForExit The problem is that this can take up to 20 minutes to complete during which nothing will be reported back to the user. Once it's completed, they'll see all the output from the application which includes progress details. Not very useful. Therefore I'm trying to find a sample that shows the best way to: Start an external application (hidden) Monitor its output periodically as it displays information about it's progress (so I can extract this and present a nice percentage bar to the user) Determine when the external application has finished (so I can't continue with my own applications execution) Kill the external application if necessary and detect when this has happened (so that if the user hits "cancel", I get take the appropriate steps) Does anyone have any recommended code snippets?

  I'm working on comparison for several different methods of implementing (real or fake) multithreading in JavaScript. As far as I know only webworkers and Google Gears WorkerPool can give you real threads (ie. spread across multiple processors with real parallel execution). I've found the following methods: switch between tasks using yield() use setInterval() (or other non-blocking function) with threads waiting one for another use Google Gears WorkerPool threads (with plugin) use html5 web workers I read related questions and found several variations of the above methods, but most of those questions are old, so there might be a few new ideas. I'm wondering - how else can you achieve multithreading in JavaScript? Any other important methods? UPDATE: As pointed out in comments what I really meant was concurrency. UPDATE 2: I found information that Silverlight + JScript supports multithreading, but I'm unable to verify this. • What happens to an ActiveX control (COleControl) after the call to OnDestroy() ?

  I have an ActiveX control written in C++ that runs in Internet Explorer 8. Most of the time (approx 90%) when the tab or browser containing the control is closed, there is an access violation like this: The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x1bf0) has exited with code 0 (0x0). Unhandled exception at 0x77b3b9fd in iexplore.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x65007408. The access violation occurs after the call to OnDestroy() but before the call to the control's destructor. The debug output says: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed. None of my code is present in the stacktrace, although perhaps the heap was corrupted at some earlier point during execution. What lifecycle events does an ActiveX control receive between the call to OnDestroy() and the control's destructor?

• Delete or comment out non-working JUnit tests?

  I'm currently building a CI build script for a legacy application. There are sporadic JUnit tests available and I will be integrating a JUnit execution of all tests into the CI build. However, I'm wondering what to do with the 100'ish failures I'm encountering in the non-maintained JUnit tests. Do I: 1) Comment them out as they appear to have reasonable, if unmaintained, business logic in them in the hopes that someone eventually uncomments them and fixes them 2) Delete them as its unlikely that anyone will fix them and the commented out code will only be ignored or be clutter for evermore 3) Track down those who have left this mess in my hands and whack them over the heads with the printouts of the code (which due to long-method smell will be sufficently suited to the task) while preaching the benefits of a well maintained and unit tested code base

• Macros no longer working in VS2005

  I'm using VS2005 on Vista. I'm using some macros, but now they have suddenly stopped working. No error messages of any kind. I am not aware of having done anything that could trigger this. I have made sure that "Allow macros to run" is checked in Tools-Options-Addin/Macro Security. I have tried running the macros from a keyboard shortcut, from the Macro Explorer, and from the Macros IDE, all in vain: The little spinning icon displays shortly (<1 sec) and then disappears without the macro being executed. I have tried putting a breakpoint on the first line of the macro and then executing it from the main IDE, with no effect (the breakpoint isn't hit). I have tried the same from the Macro IDE: The state changes to "running", but the breakpoint isn't hit. I have to break the execution manually. Any ideas?

  I ran a very basic query against one of our table and I noticed that the execution plan query processor is recommending that we create an index on a column The query is SELECT SUM(DATALENGTH(Data)) FROM Item WHERE Namespace = 'http://some_url/some_namespace/' After running, I get the following message // The Query Processor estimates that implementing the following index could improve the query cost by 96.7211%.   Hi all I'm using JBPM 4.3 and trying hard to find a way to terminate one processInstance. First I simply used something like: executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); However I got exception thrown out. "exception while executing command org.jbpm.pvm.internal.cmd.EndProcessInstance java.lang.NullPointerException" Then I googled to find this post http://community.jboss.org/thread/146478, which didn't seem to give a resolution. I tried nevertheless to end all executions of the processInstance by calling ((ExecutionImpl) execution).end(); But the same exception was thrown again when I finally try to call executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); Did anyone have the same experience and solution?

  Groovy Groovy comes with a compiler called groovyc. For each script, groovyc generates a class that extends groovy.lang.Script, which contains a main method so that Java can execute it. The name of the compiled class matches the name of the script being compiled. For example, with this HelloWorld.groovy script: println "Hello World" That becomes something like this code: class HelloWorld extends Script { public static void main(String[] args) { println "Hello World" } } Scala Scala comes with a compiler called scalac. I don't know how it works. For example, with the same HelloWorld.scala script: println("Hello World") The code is not valid for scalac, because the compiler expected class or object definition, but works in Scala REPL interpreter. How is possible? Is it wrapped in a class before execution?

• Is it possible to have a global exception hook?

  Hi, my code is fairly well covered with exception handling (try..except). Some exceptions are not expected to happen and some exceptions happen fairly often, which is expected and ok. Now I want to add some automated tests for this code. It would be good to know how many exceptions happened during execution, so I can later see if the expected number was raised or anything unexpected happened. I don't want to clutter every exception handling block with debug code, so my question is: Is there a way to install some kind of global exception handler which sits right before all other exception handling blocks? I am searching for a central place to log these exceptions. Thanks for any suggestions! (And if this matters: it is Delphi 2009)

• Do Blob properties on entities affect query performance?

  Hello I'm trying to make my mind on whether to store a binary representation of an entity as its Blob property, or whether I better keep the blobs in some separate 'wrapping' class. Possible impact on memory heap and/or a query execution time are my concerns in the first case, complexity votes against the other one. I know Blobs are not indexed, i.e. index size is not what I'm worrying about. Also I assume for blobs Datastore puts defaultFetchGroup to false, but does it mean that blobs don't make a difference in queries? Regards J. Záruba

• Unable to catch exception from Activator.CreateInstance.

  OK, I admit it this code will just look weird to you, and that's because it is weird. This is just code to reproduce the behavior, not code I want to use. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { try { Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(Func<int>), new object[] { new object(), IntPtr.Zero }); } catch { Console.WriteLine("This won't print!"); } Console.Write("Actually this will not print either!"); Console.ReadLine(); } } No matter what exception type I try to catch (the actual exception thrown is an ArgumentException as far as I can tell) the code inside the catch block will not execute. Actually execution will just stop at the Activator.CreateInstance-line.

• Can't set background colour for UIView from ViewController

  I have the following code in the view controller: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; ThemeManager *themer = [ThemeManager sharedInstance]; UIView *theView = self.view; UIColor *forBackground = [themer backgroundColour]; [theView setBackgroundColor:forBackground]; } but when execution gets to the setBackgroundColor line, I get the following error: *** -[NSCFNumber CGColor]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1237c40 *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFNumber CGColor]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1237c40' There's got to be something simple that I'm doing wrong, how do I set the background colour? Do I have to subclass the view and do it in there? I'd prefer not to have the extra class, even though that is better separation of the whole model/view/controller thing. Update: value returned by [themer backgroundColour] is constructed using colorWithPatternImage:, could this make a difference?

• Cruise control.NET invoking an IDE

  Hi, I have an IDE named VxWorks 653 2.2.3 Development shell which needed to be invoked all the time when i notice any change in my source files.So i had invoked this shell through a VB scripts which invokes two more .bat(Batch files) to get this shell popped up for execution.Now i feel that since my IDE can be invoked by command line,it can also be invoked through nant scripts using the statement like D:\WindRiver\wrenv.exe -p vxworks653-2.2.3 But what i see is that its not at all invoking.I had tried all different ways but all turned out to be in vain. Can anyone pls suggest me any way either in nant scripts or in cruise control by which my IDE can be invoked.Now at present i am using VB scripts which is a very long proceess.
