• What is constructor injection?

  I have been looking at the terms constructor injection and dependency injection while going through articles on (Service locator) design patterns. When I googled about constructor injection, I got unclear results, which prompted me to check in here. What is constructor injection? Is this a specific type of dependency injection? A canonical example would be a great help! Edit Revisiting this questions after a gap of a week, I can see how lost I was... Just in case anyone else pops in here, I will update the question body with a little learning of mine. Please do feel free to comment/correct. Constructor injection and property injection are two types of Dependency Injection.

• no such partition, grub rescue

  I am currently dual booting Win7 and Ubuntu. I created a new partition, on my c drive, to install windows 8 on (i did not want to do the upgrade). I inserted the windows 8 cd and restarted my computer. no such partition/ grub rescue is all that comes up now. I loaded ubuntu from disk and did boot-repair. It did not solve my problem but I got the following output Please let me know if anyone can fix this. I am lost.

  I am new to ubuntu server and i have installed ubuntu server on a vm and installed LAMP etc but my problem is that my website is not visible outside. i have port triggering and added port 21,22 and 80. i really don't know what am doing, i am totally lost! I have a dynamic ip but i can access the server through 192.168.25.1 no matter how many times i restart the modem and from my public ip. I get redirected to my router settings what should i do??

• Typical Applications of Linear System Solver in Game Developemnt

  I am going to write a custom solver for linear system. I would like to survey the typical problems involved the linear system solving in games. So that I can custom optimization on these problems based on the shape of the matrix. currently I am focus on these problems: B-Spline editing (I use a linear solve to resolve the C0, C1, C2 continuity) Constraint in Simulation (especially Position-Constraint, cloth) Both of them are Banded Matrix. • Macbook Pro 8,2 Graphics switching - Ubuntu 12.04

  I've been reading docs and various pages for a few hours now and can't seem to put all of the pieces together on this. Basically I am trying to get 12.04 installed on my MBP 8,2 with graphics card switching working in some way or another. My basic understanding is that I need to do an EFI boot install of ubuntu so that graphics card switching will work (due to the hardware design). From there I may be able to use one of the kernel modules for graphics switching: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics That article isn't clear on whether I need to do an EFI install. I have also seen comments in posts here that say and EFI install works by default as long as you have refit installed. Overall, I'm quite lost as to the simplest way to proceed to get an install up and running with graphics switching. I don't mind using open source GFX drivers as long as the basics work. Any help towards a solution is greatly appreciated.

• Terminal stops working after closing a program window started from the Terminal

  System: I have XUbuntu 12.04 64bit and run Terminal 0.4.8 (Xfce Terminal Emulator). Problem: My Terminal always stops to accept any input after I close a program window started from the Terminal. Details: For example, I start leafpad, (or geany, tkdiff etc) from the terminal. I close the window after finishing my job by either clicking on the close button or using ctrl-w. Then when I go back to the terminal, it does not accept any input any more. Workaround: When this happens, I have to click on any other window (giving it the focus) and go back to Terminal again. Usually this causes the Terminal to starts to accept input again. So I always have to do a alt-tab, shift-alt-tab after I close a program started from Terminal. This is very annoying. Googled and did not find answer.

• Weird unexpected image compression on a web server running Apache on Ubuntu?

  I have a weird problem on my production web server running Apache on Ubuntu: it compresses my images thereby dramatically lowering their quality! Actually I have two virtual hosts running, each located in a different folder. Wether I display .gif images by navigating on the two sites, or acceding them directly by their url, their size and quality are invariably degraded. I tried with three different browsers: same problem. Using them on other sites on the Web: no problem. Of course I disabled mod_deflate on the server (which should not compress images anyway), but the phenomenon remains. On my local développement server, running the same configuration, everything is Ok. Now I'm completely lost! For the record, my configuration: Ubuntu 10.04, Apache 2, Php 5.

• Getting that buzz back?

  I have been working in development for a good company for a while now since graduating from university, I really enjoy it and have some great fun in the office and enjoy everything I am doing. But recently I have lost that old buzz, I cant bring myself to code outside of work, a while back I could be outside of work and come up with a nice idea and go away and develop that idea, but I feel that buzz has gone, I still love developing and technology but I just cant find the energy to do it when I am not at work. Has anyone else gone through a phase like this? What did you do to combat it and get that energy and buzz back? Maybe I need a new tehcnology, or a holiday!

• Software Life-cycle of Hacking

  At my local university, there is a small student computing club of about 20 students. The club has several small teams with specific areas of focus, such as mobile development, robotics, game development, and hacking / security. I am introducing some basic agile development concepts to a couple of the teams, such as user stories, estimating complexity of tasks, and continuous integration for version control and automated builds/testing. I am familiar with some basic development life-cycles, such as waterfall, spiral, RUP, agile, etc., but I am wondering if there is such a thing as a software development life-cycle for hacking / breaching security. Surely, hackers are writing computer code, but what is the life-cycle of that code? I don't think that they would be too concerned with maintenance, as once the breach has been found and patched, the code that exploited that breach is useless. I imagine the life-cycle would be something like: Find gap in security Exploit gap in security Procure payload Utilize payload I propose the following questions: What kind of formal definitions (if any) are there for the development life-cycle of software when the purpose of the product is to breach security?

• Is the abundance of Frameworks dumbing down programmers?

  With all of the frameworks available these days ORM's DI/IoC etc. I find that many programmers are losing or don't have the problem solving skills needed to solve difficult issues. I've seen many times unexpected behaviour creep into applications and the developers unable to really dig in and find the issues. It seems to me that deep understanding of whats going on under the hood is being lost. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting these frameworks aren't good and haven't moved the industry forward, only asking if as a unintended consequence developers aren't gaining the knowledge and skill needed for deep understanding of systems.

Who pays best? Any regulations? Any problems with getting the app approved by Microsoft Market? If you chose Admob: Which plugin do you suggest? This or that or another one? Any experiences in Europe or Germany? (MS pubCenter is US only so far) Edit: I think we discussed enough about acceptance of mobile advertisement. Let's focus now on the questions I asked. • KDE Sometimes Glitches On Wakeup

  Well, a picture is work 1k words: Looks bad, huh? I am using the 331-updates latest 331.67 drivers from NVidia's website on a Dell Latitude e6400. Everything else is up-to-date. This only happens when I resume from sleep, or I switch to a VT and back. It also doesn't ALWAYS happen, which I find odd. Graphics Card: Nvidia Quadro NVS160M UPDATE AFTER TESTING: This problem only exists with KDE (specifically QT). I can go into Unity or Mint or any non QT-based GUI and it works perfectly with no resume errors. UPDATE: This only happens when I use KWin (and KDE). I have upgraded to 14.04 and the problem is not occurring as frequently. Also, sometimes this effect doesn't happen, but instead the top menu bar simply goes out of focus with the rest of the screen goes blank.

• Recover files from NTFS drive with bad sectors

  A few nights ago I have created a backup of my data on an external 500 GB NTFS USB hard drive. I have then formatted my computer, reinstalled Ubuntu and started transferring back the data from the external HDD. Unfortunately some files have became corrupted and Ubuntu is unable to copy them over. The same issue happens if I login using Windows 7. Disk Utility detects with SMART that there are "a few bad sectors". Some of files are perfectly intact, but other files cannot be accessed (nor read, copied...) although they are displayed within nautilus and show the correct file size. Is there anything I can do to recover this data? I have thought of using TestDisk but this utility seems more useful for repairing lost partitions or deleted files. I have also thought of using ddrescue so I could at least have a low level copy of the disk but I am not sure what use to make of it in order to recover the data!!!

• Cannot connect to a Wifi network chipset AR9287

  After updating my newly installed ubuntu 10.10. I can't connect to the wifi network anymore although it is showing it. Tried to install manufacturer driver INF file via ndiswrapper only makes things worst - lost my wifi. Downloaded and installed the compat-wireless driver for the Atheros AR9287. After installing, i got my wifi connection again but after rebooting I can't reconnect again. The Wifi access point is showing 2/5 to 3/5 signal strength. Laptop: Acer Aspire 4741G Wifi Adapter: Atheros AR9287 OS: Ubuntu 10.10 64bit

• Part 1 - Load Testing In The Cloud

  Azure is fascinating, but even more fascinating is the marriage of Azure and TFS! Introduction Recently a client I worked for had 2 major business critical applications being delivered, with very little time budgeted for Performance testing, we immediately hit a bottleneck when the performance testing phase started, the in house infrastructure team could not support the hardware requirements in the short notice. It was suggested that the performance testing be performed on one of the QA environments which was a fraction of the production environment. This didn’t seem right, the team decided to turn to the cloud. The team took advantage of the elasticity offered by Azure, starting with a single test agent which was provisioned and ready for use with in 30 minutes the team scaled up to 17 test agents to perform a very comprehensive performance testing cycle. Issues were identified and resolved but the highlight was that the cost of running the ‘test rig’ proved to be less than if hosted on premise by the infrastructure team. Thank you for taking the time out to read this blog post, in the series of posts, I’ll try and cover the start to end of everything you need to know to use Azure to build your Test Rig in the cloud. But Why Azure? I have my own Data Centre… If the environment is provisioned in your own datacentre, - No matter what level of service agreement you may have with your infrastructure team there will be down time when the environment is patched - How fast can you scale up or down the environments (keeping the enterprise processes in mind) Administration, Cost, Flexibility and Scalability are the areas you would want to think around when taking the decision between your own Data Centre and Azure! How is Microsoft's Public Cloud Offering different from Amazon’s Public Cloud Offering? Microsoft's offering of the Cloud is a hybrid of Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) which distinguishes Microsoft's offering from other providers such as Amazon (Amazon only offers IaaS). PaaS – Platform as a Service IaaS – Infrastructure as a Service Fills the needs of those who want to build and run custom applications as services. Similar to traditional hosting, where a business will use the hosted environment as a logical extension of the on-premises datacentre. A service provider offers a pre-configured, virtualized application server environment to which applications can be deployed by the development staff. Since the service providers manage the hardware (patching, upgrades and so forth), as well as application server uptime, the involvement of IT pros is minimized. On-demand scalability combined with hardware and application server management relieves developers from infrastructure concerns and allows them to focus on building applications. The servers (physical and virtual) are rented on an as-needed basis, and the IT professionals who manage the infrastructure have full control of the software configuration. This kind of flexibility increases the complexity of the IT environment, as customer IT professionals need to maintain the servers as though they are on-premises. The maintenance activities may include patching and upgrades of the OS and the application server, load balancing, failover clustering of database servers, backup and restoration, and any other activities that mitigate the risks of hardware and software failures.   The biggest advantage with PaaS is that you do not have to worry about maintaining the environment, you can focus all your time in solving the business problems with your solution rather than worrying about maintaining the environment. If you decide to use a VM Role on Azure, you are asking for IaaS, more on this later. A nice blog post here on the difference between Saas, PaaS and IaaS. Now that we are convinced why we should be turning to the cloud and why in specific Azure, let’s discuss about the Test Rig. The Load Test Rig – Topology Now the moment of truth, Of course a big part of getting value from cloud computing is identifying the most adequate workloads to take to the cloud, so I’ve decided to try to make a Load Testing rig where the Agents are running on Windows Azure.   I’ll talk you through the above Topology, - User: User kick starts the load test run from the developer workstation on premise. This passes the request to the Test Controller. - Test Controller: The Test Controller is on premise connected to the same domain as the developer workstation. As soon as the Test Controller receives the request it makes use of the Windows Azure Connect service to orchestrate the test responsibilities to all the Test Agents. The Windows Azure Connect endpoint software must be active on all Azure instances and on the Controller machine as well. This allows IP connectivity between them and, given that the firewall is properly configured, allows the Controller to send work loads to the agents. In parallel, the Controller will collect the performance data from the agents, using the traditional WMI mechanisms. - Test Agents: The Test Agents are on the Windows Azure Public Cloud, as soon as the test controller issues instructions to the test agents, the test agents start executing the load tests. The HTTP requests are issued against the web server on premise, the results are captured by the test agents. And finally the results are passed over to the controller. - Servers: The Web Server and DB Server are hosted on premise in the datacentre, this is usually the case with business critical applications, you probably want to manage them your self. Recap and What’s next? So, in the introduction in the series of blog posts on Load Testing in the cloud I highlighted why creating a test rig in the cloud is a good idea, what advantages does Windows Azure offer and the Test Rig topology that I will be using. I would also like to mention that i stumbled upon this [Video] on Azure in a nutshell, great watch if you are new to Windows Azure. In the next post I intend to start setting up the Load Test Environment and discuss pricing with respect to test agent machine types that will be used in the test rig. • Have you ever used a non mainstream language in a project? Why?

  I was thinking about my academic experience with Smalltalk (well, Squeak) a while ago and whether I would like to use it for something, and it got me thinking: sure, it's as good and capable as any popular language, and it has some nice ideas, but there are certain languages that are already well entrenched in certain niches of programming (C is for systems programming, Java is for portability, and so on...), and Smalltalk and co. don't seem to have any obvious differentiating features to make them the right choice under certain circumstances, or at least not as far as I can tell, and when you add to it the fact that it's harder to find programmers who know it it adds all sorts of other problems for the organization itself. So if you ever worked on a project where a non-mainstream language (like Smalltalk) was used over a more mainstream one, what was the reason for it? To clarify: I'd like to focus this on imperative languages, since other paradigms like functional and logic programming language, while not necessarily mainstream, can still be good choices for certain projects for obvious reasons.

• LibreOffice Writer Error due to a lock file

  Every time I try to open a word document I get this error. LibreOffice 3.5 Either another instance of LibreOffice is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure user "closes LibreOffice on host". Do you want to continue? I've been onto different forums to find out a remedy but nothing yet. I've recently done a fresh install of 12.04 (64bit) and have been having some issues with different programs and have been able to work through most of them but this one, I'm lost.
