• How do i set CTRL not to show where the pointer is?

  After recently re-installing, i went through every System Setting and choose exactly how i wanted everthing to be. Except one thing. I'd never seen the Show Cursor on CTRL value before, and wanted to know what it was like. After a while it was simply annoying, whenever i paste of cut in chrome it takes the focus off of the text before i can press V. I have been through eveything in System Settings and can't find it again to disable it. How do i set CTRL not to pulse around the cursor? I will be happy with directions in System Settings, Ubuntu Tweak, or GConf.

• Which tips helped you learn touch-typing? [closed]

  I've been learning touch-typing for about two weeks now, and I'm really commited to mastering this skill. Eventhough I'm doing ok with prose already, I'm struggling with programming syntax and even more with keybindings. Those stray you away from the home row more than regular words, and aren't as easy to practice. So I often hunt and peck in order to just get it out, but when reverting to old habits like this, I find it hard to get back into the touch-typing mindframe quickly. One little trick that has helped me so far when getting lost is to reposition every finger on its home row key, and mentally visualize the layout bias of the keyboard, ie the backslash kind of alignment of key columns. It's hard to describe though and probably a bit weird... Hope you guys have better tips !

• What are some good resources for learning about file systems? [closed]

  I'd like to learn about file system design at a very detailed level. I'm currently in a graduate level operating systems course, and we're currently going over file systems. We mostly discuss papers and such, but our semester long project is to implement a log-structured file system using fuse and a virtual disk. Are there any good books that focus heavily on file system design and implementation? I have some conceptual clouding on things that seem very basic such as "when we say that an inode has pointers to blocks, do we mean anything besides the inode keeping track of block numbers? Is there any other format for 'disk pointers'?" I'm actually looking at file system design to start my career, so I'm probably going to try to implement a more traditional file system with fuse and our virtual disk format after this course is over.

• Adding Play Framework directory to my system path on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I am very new to the Ubuntu OS and I would need help with it. I am trying to install this open source platform called Play Framework, to install it I need to add the installation directory to my system path, the documentation for Play says that I should open a terminal and type export PATH=$PATH:/to/path/play. I have tried this it did not work. I also tried sudo apt-get install play and that did not work either. I am completely lost now, I need help urgently because it is for work. Best Martha

• Can not get to login screen, background starts with terminal prompt only

  my uncle has Ubuntu on his work PC. Basically I came in to work today, and he had lost his UNITY side bar. I told him start with just rebooting it. He rebooted it... now it does not even get to the login screen. It gets to the background with the word UBUNTU, and the 6 or 7 dots, does it's little loading dot thing... then stops, and a black terminal opens on the top left with the background still in place. Personally, I think he screwed it up himself. He always swears he didn't touch anything, but I know better... Either way, I can't get him back into the desktop to even see if the sidebar is back. He's always screwing around pressing the wrong buttons on the login screen, hitting admin things and such... Any ideas?

Completing app will mean you get a possibly very hard to maintain app later on? The app is a personal project. I don't really know how to answer "What drives the functionality and design", but I guess it's to solve inefficiencies in current software out there. I like minimal easy to use software too.   Sincere apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this. I am a computer engineering student and I'm currently on my first co-op of the required 5 I have to take, and I've noticed that all I'm really given is software engineering jobs. I love developing software, but I don't want to lose out on the hardware aspect of computers, as having a hybrid knowledge of the two is why I chose this major in the first place. So I guess my question is: Are there any software engineering jobs that still allow you to handle and interface with hardware on a very low level? Or am I to be forced to choose which focus I love more?

• Is there a modern (eg NoSQL) web analytics solution based on log files?

  I have been using Awstats for many years to process my log files. But I am missing many possibilities (like cross-domain reports) and I hate being stuck with extra fields I created years ago. Anyway, I am not going to continue to use this script. Is there a modern apache logs analytics solution based on modern storage technologies like NoSQL or at least somehow ready to cope with large datasets efficiently? I am primarily looking for something that generates nice sortable and searchable outputs with the focus on web analytics, before having to write my own frontends. (so graylog2 is not an option) This question is purely about log file based solutions.

• What's the difference between MCSD and MCPD?

  I am looking on the website but the difference between the two isn't explained. To complicate matters a Google search tells me that developers should focus on the MCPD qualifications but an examination of the MCPD section of the site is telling me that the Web Application exams will expire in July 2013! It seems out of date. Meanwhile the MCSD exam seems to be a lot more up to date with references to HTML5/ASP.net 4.5 MVC applications! What's the difference. Are the MCPD going to be updated after July? Thanks

• Finding Telecommuting Opportunities as a Recent College Graduate

  Reading the answers to hiring practices of remote vs. local employees and freelance programming sites, I would like to add this question to the mix. I am a recent college graduate from an electrical engineering background with 2 years worth of work terms in programming (C, C++, VBA, Matlab, etc.) while I was still in school. While I am interested in learning other software tools (such as Python, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, etc.), I want to use the tools I have now in a telecommuting role while I grow my toolset. Despite having 2 years of work experience (and I've lost track of when I have started programming), my status as a recent college graduate may be an obstacle of my credibility to compete for telecommuting (or in fact any) programming opportunities. I don't know how I can go about finding telecommute programming opportunities for someone with my situation. Overall, many of previous places I've worked at liked my work. What are your suggestions? • How do I make the jump from Android to Windows Phone 7?

  I'm planning on making the jump over from developing apps for Android to developing apps for Windows Phone 7 as well. For starters, I figured I would port over my simplest app. The code itself isn't much of a problem. The transition from Java to C# isn't that bad. It's actually easier than I expected. What is troublesome is switching SDKs. I've already compiled some basic Windows Phone 7 apps and ran through some tutorials but I'm still feeling a bit lost. For example, I'm not sure what the equivalent of a ScrollView on Android would be on Windows Phone 7. So does anyone have any advice or any resources they can offer me to help me make this transition? Additionally, any comments on the Windows Phone 7 app market (especially in comparison to the Android market) would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you very much in advance for your time.

• Configuring A Subdomain (cPanel) - www works, subdomain on it's own doesn't

  I've created a sub domain on my website using cPanel at test.mydomain.com, and this created a folder in my main 'www' directory called test. In this folder is a folder called cgi-bin, and it seems to redirect the page to say "It works!", but when I upload my own index.html file to the test directory it keeps showing http://test.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi instead of the index file. If I go to www.test.mydomain.com then it works OK. How do I host my content at the sub domain? It's my first time setting one up so I'm a bit lost.

• GNOME 3.4 released, with smooth & fast magnification

  The GNOME community released GNOME 3.4 today. This release contains several new accessibility features, along with a new set of custom high-contrast icons which improve the user experience for users needing improved contrast. This release also makes available the AEGIS-funded GNOME Shell Magnifier. This magnifier leverages the powerful graphics functionality built into all modern video cards for smooth and fast magnification in GNOME. You can watch a video of that magnifier (with the previous version of the preference dialog), which shows all of the features now available in GNOME 3.4. This includes full/partial screen magnification, a magnifier lens, full or partial mouse cross hairs with translucency, and several mouse tracking modes. Future improvements planned for GNOME 3.6 include focus & caret tracking, and a variety of color/contrast controls.

• Basic AI FSM - Handling state transition

  I'm starting to study on how to implement game AI, and it seems to me that a very simple FSM for my Pong demo would be a nice way to start. My vision on implementing this would be to have a basic state interface and a class for each state, then the NPC would have an instance of the current state. The class should have an update method and directions on wich state to go next, depending on the event received. The question is: How do I handle this event? Should I have a regular addEventListener and a costum event system? Or should I check on update for the things that could change the current state? I'm feeling a bit lost, I feel I have a good grasp on the FSM concept but a good implementation seems tricky, thanks in advance.

  Hello, I've started doing some research on the technologies that I will need for my website. I'm trying to implement a really simple website with OpenID user registration. The website will store a block of text for each user. I imagine this means that I will need a database with: User ID Open ID url Data Having said that, I'm still having trouble deciding what I really need to do this. I know that I will need the following for the actual site: Javascript JQuery CSS But on the back end, I'm kind of lost at the moment. I've been looking at the OpenID-Selector, which is coded in Javascript. It seems like it's exactly what is used on this site. Will I actually need PHP? MySQL for the data and user registration? • Thinkpad T530 with Optimus and Docking Station

  I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T530 with Optimus video, which is not supported on 12.04.1. I don't normally need the discrete (nVidia) graphics, so I turn it off in the BIOS settings to achieve longer battery life (and so that the screen dimmer will work), but when placed in the docking station, the integrated (Intel) graphics don't power the HDMI ports. (The VGA port does work, but I want to focus on the HDMI.) This means I have to change the BIOS settings constantly. Is there any way to have the system detect the docking station and power up/enable the discrete graphics accordingly? I don't need to do it on the fly. Just at startup. This post suggests that bumblebee can turn the discrete graphics on and off for specific applications, but I just want to turn it on or off. [2 suggests that vga_switcheroo will not work with nVidia Optimus.
