  • Which network protocol to use for lightweight notification of remote apps (Delphi 2005)

    I have this situation.... Client-initiated SOAP 1.1 communication between one server and let's say, tens of thousands of clients. Clients are external, coming in through our firewall, authenticated by certificate, https, etc.. They can be anywhere, and usually have their own firewalls, NAT routers, etc... They're truely external, not just remote corporate offices. They could be in a corporate/campus network, DSL/Cable, even Dialup. Currently, clients push new data to the server and pull new data from the server on 15-minute polling loop. The server currently does not push data - the client hits the "messagecount" method, to see if there is new data to pull. If 0, it sleeps for another 15 min and checks again. We're trying to get that down to 7 seconds. If this were an internal app, with one or just a few dozen clients, we'd write a cilent "listener" soap service, and would push data to it. But since they're external, sit behind their own firewalls, and sometimes private networks behind NAT routers, this is not practical. So we're left with polling on a much quicker loop. 10K clients, each checking their messagecount every 10 seconds, is going to be 1000/sec messages that will mostly just waste bandwidth, server, firewall, and authenticator resources. So I'm trying to design something better than what would amount to a self-inflicted DoS attack. I don't think it's practical to have the server send soap messages to the client (push) as this would require too much configuration at the client end. But I think there are alternatives that I don't know about. Such as: 1) Is there a way for the client to make a request for GetMessageCount() via Soap 1.1, and get the response, and then perhaps, "stay on the line" for perhaps 5-10 minutes to get additional responses in case new data arrives? i.e the server says "0", then a minute later in response to some SQL trigger (the server is C# on Sql Server, btw), knows that this client is still "on the line" and sends the updated message count of "5"? 2) Is there some other protocol that we could use to "ping" the client, using information gathered from their last GetMessageCount() request? 3) I don't even know. I guess I'm looking for some magic protocol where the client can send a GetMessageCount() request, which would include info for "oh by the way, in case the answer changes in the next hour, ping me at this address...". Also, I'm assuming that any of these "keep the line open" schemes would seriously impact the server sizing, as it would need to keep many thousands of connections open, simultaneously. That would likely impact the firewalls too, I think. Is there anything out there like that? Or am I pretty much stuck with polling? TIA, Chris

  • Iphone simulator hangs while installing apps

    I am using snow leopard, xcode 3.22, i first had this issue when i was using os 4 beta, i have removed the xcode software from my system and reinstalled. I can't get any app to load in the simulator, the app starts to install in the simulator then nothing, I can install the app to my device, but i can run anything in the simulator it just hangs, i am not sure what to do any idea?

  • How to replicate this screenshot in WebForms?

    I need to replicate the following in ASP.NET WebForms using a GridView. But I am not sure where to start. Basically I need 3 columns. The checkbox (which sometimes needs to be disabled), and 2 standard text columns. I've gone through the tutorial and I can see how to basically dump text data into a GridView, but not clear on how to implement checkboxes, particularly ones that needs to be disabled once in a while. And I have to replicate the style of the screenshot (e.g. border on the bottom). Having trouble with that as well. How do I swing something like that?

  • Javascript style objects in Objective-C

    Background: I use a ton of NSDictionary objects in my iPhone and iPad code. I'm sick of the verbose way of getting/setting keys to these state dictionaries. So a little bit of an experiment: I just created a class I call Remap. Remap will take any arbitrary set[VariableName]:(NSObject *) obj selector and forward that message to a function that will insert obj into an internal NSMutableDictionary under the key [vairableName]. Remap will also take any (zero argument) arbitrary [variableName] selector and return the NSObject mapped in the NSMutableDictionary under the key [variableName]. e.g. Remap * remap = [[Remap alloc] init]; NSNumber * testNumber = [NSNumber numberWithInt:46]; [remap setTestNumber:testNumber]; testNumber = [remap testNumber]; [remap setTestString:@"test string"]; NSString * testString = [remap testString]; NSMutableDictionary * testDict = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithObject:testNumber forKey:@"testNumber"]; [remap setTestDict:testDict]; testDict = [remap testDict]; where none of the properties testNumber, testString, or testDict are actually defined in Remap. The crazy thing? It works... My only question is how can I disable the "may not respond to " warnings for JUST accesses to Remap? P.S. : I'll probably end up scrapping this and going with macros since message forwarding is quite inefficient... but aside from that does anyone see other problems with Remap? Global vars vs. DI/IoC: Should datastores be assigned to global variables so any part of the application can access them? Or should they be dependency injected where required? Server persistence: Assuming a datastore's data needn't always be persisted to the server immediately, should the datastore itself handle persistence? If not, then what class should handle persistence and how should the persistence class fit into the client-side architecture overall? Is the datastore considered the model in MVC, or is it something else since it just stores raw data?

I don't want to pass any path parameters to this method. I want to assume the location is fixed at /files/xml/test.xml. How can I load a XDocument know this? I don't seem to have access to server.mappath either.

  • Initializing AngularJS service factory style

    I have a service that retrieves data via REST. I want to store the resulting data in service level variable for use in multiple controllers. When I put all the REST logic directly into controllers everything works fine but when I attempt to move the retrieval / storing of data into a service the controller is not being updated when the data comes back. I've tried lots of different ways of maintain the binding between service and controller.   • "Winamp style" spectrum analyzer

    I have a program that plots the spectrum analysis (Amp/Freq) of a signal, which is preety much the DFT converted to polar. However, this is not exactly the sort of graph that, say, winamp (right at the top-left corner), or effectively any other audio software plots. I am not really sure what is this sort of graph called (if it has a distinct name at all), so I am not sure what to look for. I am preety positive about the frequency axis being base two exponential, the amplitude axis puzzles me though. Any pointers?

  • Handling Messages in Console Apps/DLLs in C++ Win32

    I would like to have the ability to process Win32 messages in a console app and/or inside a standalone DLL. I have been able to do it in .NET with the following article and it works great in C# inside a console app and standalone DLL http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163417.aspx Is there a way to do the equivalent with C/C++ Win32 APIs? I have tried doing RegisterClassEx(...) and CreateWindow(...) even passing in HWND_MESSAGE to hWndParent but the trouble is that after the "invisible" window is created messages are not being processed probably due to the lack of a message pump. Where would the message pump go if you had a DLL entry point? I have tried creating another thread in a DLL and put while(GetMesage(..)) there but that did not work either. Any ideas?

  • Nested WHILE loops not acting as expected - Javascript / Google Apps Script

    I've got a function that isn't acting as intended. Before I continue, I'd like preface this with the fact that I normally program in Mathematica and have been tasked with porting over a Mathematica function (that I wrote) to JavaScript so that it can be used in a Google Docs spreadsheet. I have about 3 hours of JavaScript experience... The entire (small) project is calculating the Gross Die per Wafer, given a wafer and die size (among other inputs). The part that isn't working is where I check to see if any corner of the die is outside of the effective radius, Reff. The function takes a list of X and Y coordinates which, when combined, create the individual XY coord of the center of the die. That is then put into a separate function "maxDistance" that calculates the distance of each of the 4 corners and returns the max. This max value is checked against Reff. Edit #2: Per showi, I've changed WHILE loops to FOR loops and replaced <= with <. Still not the right answer. It did clean things up a bit though...     Hi, I have tomcat running on 8080 on a ubuntu lucid server. I am able to access it fro local machine. However I am unable to access the tomcat from any machine outside. Is it due to firewall restrictions. WHat do I need to do to enable accessing tomcat from remote machines. Tried adding this rule to iptables but it did not solve iptables --table nat --append PREROUTING --protocol tcp --destination-port 80 \ --in-interface eth0 --jump REDIRECT --to-port 8080 Any help would be appreciated Thanks Bala Thiruppanambakkam

  • Generic applet style system for publishing mathematics demonstrations?

    Anyone who's tried to study mathematics using online resources will have come across these Java applets that demonstrate a particular mathematical idea. Examples: http://www.math.ucla.edu/~tao/java/Mobius.html http://www.mathcs.org/java/programs/FFT/index.html I love the idea of this interactive approach because I believe it is very helpful in conveying mathematical principles. I'd like to create a system for visually designing and publishing these 'mathlets' such that they can be created by teachers with little programming experience. So in order to create this app, i'll need a GUI and a 'math engine'. I'll probably be working with .NET because thats what I know best and i'd like to start experimenting with F#. Silverlight appeals to me as a presentation framework for this project (im not worried about interoperability right now). So my questions are: does anything like this exist already in full form? are there any GUI frameworks for displaying mathematical objects such as graphs & equations? are there decent open source libraries that exposes a mathematical framework (Math.NET looks good, just wondering if there is anything else out there) is there any existing work on taking mathematical models/demos built with maple/matlab/octave/mathematica etc and publishing them to the web?

  • Tools for displaying text, powerpoint style, in linux

    I have a problem where I need a way to display a repeating series of "images" on a computer monitor. Specifically, given a series of text files, I'd like a way to display the contents of said files on a screen in a way much like a powerpoint would. My current thoughts are to find some tool that will take in a text file of some format, and then output an image which contains the text from the file. Then I'd put it in a directory and have some Slideshow program continuously go between the images in that directory. It's a very hacky solution, obviously. So, does anyone know of tools that would do such a thing? Or is there a better way to do this? I've looked into the library libgd2, but it doesn't seem to support text-wrapping for images, which is something I'd need. Thanks!

We're running PHP5 on the server and we try to find a good way for managing errors and status reports that arises from the usage of our functions. While using return in functions, the execution is ended, so nothing more can be sent back. Right? What's the best practice to send a status information or error code upon ending execution of actual function?   • Which messaging services can BlackBerry apps integrate with?

    I'm in charge of having a BlackBerry app developed that translates the contents of a message from one language to another. So the aim would be to have a button at the bottom of a received message which says 'translate this'. I've heard that this kind of thing is possible using J2ME plus the native BlackBerry API. Can this be done for all kinds of messanging features on the Blackberry, or just some? ie I'm thinking SMS, email and BB messages. Secondly, given that the translation itself is done via a web request, I feel like this should be a fairly lightweight application. Would anyone care to hazard a guess how long it might take an experienced contractor to develop such an app?

    Most of the Android users use the GO SMS app, and the iPhone users use their normal messaging app (Android rocks). Now, whenever a user types a message and presses the send button, the message's edit text field sets a glossy green background, also the green colored background comes floating at the back of the edit text field. How do they do it? (I have been searching this for a while, but was unable to find an answer.)

  • T-SQL stored procedure to return google style "suggested" search results

    Ok, using SQL Server 2008. On my web page I have a textbox with jQuery-UI AutoComplete hooked up. Now I need a stored procedure to search across all columns of a single table(or multiple joined tables I suppose) for a search string coming from the textbox/autocomplete AJAX call, and return "suggested" search strings. I am using the AdventureWorks db for testing(Products table) So for example, the product table has columns for product name and product number(among others) and I want to return suggested search strings based on user input where they may enter a product name and/or a product number. I have it working across a single column which was simple. Any ideas?
