    There are similar questions for Linux and Mac, but I'm after a Windows solution here. The problem is as follows: I want to write several (js) script files in a folder, and have a program monitor that folder for file changes and new files being added, and run a command whenever that happens (to compile them all into one single file). The solution has to: Monitor both file changes and new files being added, in a folder. Run a command only if there is any change. It would be best if it either is a built-in solution (like a JScript or VBscript snippet), or something that does not require installation.

  • How to configure Amazon Security Groups to achieve multi-tier architecture?

    What is the preferred way to configure Amazon Security Groups to achieve a multi-tier architecture? Each of my instances has its own Security Group, which I only want to use for rules specific to an instance. I'd like to keep any rules which apply to multiple instances in a separate Security Group, which can then be assigned to instance Security Groups as necessary. As an example, I've setup a group called "admin", which allows administrative access from my IP. I added the "admin" group as the source to each of my instance security groups. However, I still can't access the instances from my IP without adding the rules directly to the instance's group. Am I missing something? Although it seems a multi-tier security architecture should be possible, it doesn't seem to be working.

  • How to monitor the size of files in Windows folder?

    What are some of good ways to automatically monitor the size of files in a directory and send warning email if they get close to a certain limit on a Windows server? I have a Progress DB installation to keep in check, and last week we hit some problems. Apparently, the size of extents has hit 2GB - and Progress won't work past that - we needed to open a new extent. I'm coming from a Linux environment, so I don't know what are the usual to monitor this in a Windows environment (or monitoring tools whatsoever). I prefer some generic solution, as I have a mixed environment (Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 R2). Thanks in advance for all usable alternative answers.

    Assuming I am using the following equipment... motherboard with HDMI/DVI & no embedded graphics discrete graphics card (nVidia or ATI) on PCI-E slot Intel CPU with integrated graphics ...where should I plug my monitor into the computer? Presumably, I'll get the fastest speed on games connected directly to the graphics card. But there is also power savings when connecting to the motherboard and accessing the Intel on-board graphics. I've read that some motherboards can switch automatically between the Intel graphics and discrete graphics. Is that something that works well, and where do I connect the monitor to enable that?

  • How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

    I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

    Most people have a single monitor for their computers, many have two, and some individuals enjoy “3 monitor plus” goodness. This week we would like to know how many monitors you use with your computer. Photo by DamnedNice. A good majority of people have a single monitor that they use with their computers and that single monitor serves their needs very well. It could be that these individuals do not engage in a heavy amount of work or play on their computers…they just need to do the basics like checking e-mail, using I.M., working with photos, etc. Another possibility is the use of virtual desktop software such as Dexpot, Yodm 3D, or Sysinternals Desktops on Windows systems. Linux systems such as Ubuntu already have that wonderful multi-desktop functionality built in. The wonderful part about virtual desktops is that a single monitor can feel equivalent to a small army of monitors. The ability to separate your open windows into “categories” and spread them out across multiple desktops is definitely nice. With each passing year dual monitor setups are becoming more common. Having twice the screen real-estate visible at the same time can be extremely convenient when you are multi-tasking. Perhaps you like to monitor your system’s stats and an e-mail account on the second monitor while working with software on the first. It certainly beats having windows popping up and down on your screen constantly while keeping on top of everything! Next we have the people who have three or more monitors in use with their computers. This may be a result of the type of work they do, an experiment to see if multiple monitors are right for them, or the cool, geeky factor that comes with having all those monitors. Needless to say these individuals can induce a good amount of envy and/or inspiration in the rest of us when we see their awesome setups. Are you perfectly content with a single monitor?     Soon I will be getting my own mini-PC (RaspberryPi / MK802 / Mele A1000 / VIA APC). But I was wondering whether is there any possibility that I can just power up and access my mini-pc's OS by connecting it to wifi/ethernet link and remotely access it over the LAN without actually needing a monitor (throughout the process?) ? I currently own a laptop and need a download box and later will be getting a HDTV for converting to a HTPC :D So, I don't really own a spare monitor now but I do have an extra keyboard and mouse. Is there exists any linux distro for the same? which I can use to directly fireup my mini-pc and hook it up across my LAN to remotely access through my laptop?   • Can you use a DVI-VGA Adapter on a monitor instead of a video card?

    I suspect the answer to this is "no", but here goes: I have a monitor with inputs for DVI and VGA. I want to be able to share this display with two computers (one at a time, of course) that both have VGA only. I also have a DVI-VGA dongle that came with a video card that's in a different computer. Can I connect this dongle directly to the DVI port on the monitor so that I can connect both VGA computers? I'd rather not resort to a kvm.

  • What do I need to use an XBOX 360 with my PC monitor and speakers?

    I've been thinking about getting an XBOX 360, mostly for games on XBLA or some exlusive titles, since they're relatively cheap now to get used. But I'm a student and live in a small apartment that has no TV, and no place to put a new TV (money to buy one wouldn't be a problem), so I've been thinking to use the console with my PC monitor and my speakers. My monitor only has HDMI and VGA input (no direct DVI), so I'm guessing I somehow need to split the audio and video signals coming from the XBox (or does the XBox have a direct 720p VGA output + external connectors for my speakers?). What do I need to make this happen?

  • What is the cause of a vertical white line on an LCD monitor?

    This just happened yesterday when I was browsing the internet. My AOC N941Sw monitor is suddenly showing a thin horizontal white line near the center of the screen. The white line distorts the images. I tried checking the cables for loose connection and dust particles but the white line is still here. There are times the entire image below the horizontal white line flickers and move up and down. When this happens, I just turn off the monitor then the flicker goes away but the white horizontal line is still there. After a few minutes, the same thing happen all over again. Is there a way to fix this?

    Is there any solution out there to turn a Mac into a true multi-user thin client server? I'd like to set up a few cheap PCs with access to a couple accounts using something like VNC, but it isn't economical to buy a new server for each user or a new license for virtualized OS X Server for each user. I'm fully aware that OS X Server lets you set up users with "network home folders," and I know there's also VNC built into Mac OS X.   • How can I watch full size video on 1 monitor and work on another?

    Here is my situation. I have 3 monitors hooked up to my new PC running off 2 video cards. When I watch a video on one of the monitors and make it go full screen on that monitor it is great, however as soon as I click anywhere on one of the other 2 monitors, it makes me lose the full screen mode of the video and makes it go back to it's original size. This happens when watching a flash or silverlight based video in Google chrome as well as when I watch video from a player such as iTunes. Is it possible to make a video play fullscreen on one of my monitors and still work in the other two screens without loosing my full screen mode on the one monitor?

  • Windows 7 treating my third monitor as an extension to my second rather than detecting it as a stand alone

    I am trying to attach a third monitor to my PC, however I am coming across a rather strange issue. Windows screen resolution is still only showing that I have two monitors connected, but the second has been extended over both the second and third monitors. Basically, it shows as the main display being a normal size, and the secondary as being twice as long as normal. I have my main connected via a the display port, and the second and third are using two of the three mini HDMI ports my video card provides. How do I get windows to accept my third monitor the same as it does my second?

    I'm working on a university project, where I have Tomcat as a web server, and I want to create a multi user environment on top of linux, so every user that logs into my website has his own credentials, and he can access only his own data (files and folders...). The main issue is that the purpose of the website is executing code on the server-side, so I must have a good (reasonable) protection against malicious code. (a user destroying his own user is fine by me) I thought that defining a linux-user for every website-user is the best solution - it isolates each user from the other, and I can define each one's permissions. Can I create users in linux using shell commands? Can I configure max quota/memory/cpu for a user? Anyone has another idea for managing that kind of multi-user environment?

Its not the first time that I have heard this, but I find very few people talking about how you actually do it if you are interested in learning how to write lock-free multi-threading code.     I'm working on a C# application that needs to use Direct3D in a control in a windows form, AND (at the same time) fullscreen on a secondary monitor. Basically, I want a Windows Forms application on one screen with a user-interface to control the graphics, and I'd like to show preview-graphics in a small control, and full-blown superduper megafancy graphics fullscreen on a secondary monitor. What's the best way to approach this? (For example, I know XNA can render in a Windows Forms control, but is it possible to then add a fullscreen window on another monitor as well?)

  • How can I display a hidden view in Interface Builder which is on a unattached monitor?

    I am using Interface Builder to work on NIBs and one of the NIBs must have a view on my external monitor which is not attached because I cannot see it on my MacBook. I have had this problem with editing iPad NIBs which I work on with my larger external monitor. For some reason Interface Builder is not detecting that there is now just one screen and not pulling this view onto this monitor. There has to be a way to get this back into the visible space so that I can work on it. I have tried double clicking on the view icon in the organizer which normally brings the view forward but it is not coming into view. What can I do? Is this really a bug that has been around this whole time?

  • How to monitor MySQL query errors, timeouts and logon attempts?

    While setting up a third party closed source CMS (Sitefinity) the setup doesn't create all tables and procedures necessary to run it. The software lacks a logging system itself and it made me wonder: could I trace and monitor failing SQL statements from MySQL? This serves more than only the purpose of solving my issue with Sitefinity. More often I wonder what's send to the MySQL server, not wanting to dive into the software products or setup a debugging environment etc. I tried JetProfiler (only performance) and looked through a few others, but although they monitor a lot, they don't monitor query failures, timeouts or logon attempts. Does anyone know a profiler, tracer, monitoring tool, commercial or free, that can show me this information?

  • Strange scaling when duplicating monitors with another screen

    I can't get two monitors to scale application resolutions the same way. My main monitor works normally. My second monitor however, which is set to duplicate its image onto a TV I have in my room, renders the applications in a far lower resolution than the 1080p I've set it to. Also, the mouse pointer on the second monitor is enormous, it looks 2-3 times bigger than the one on the main monitor. I've checked the "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays", to no avail. Here are some comparison pictures. Metro on the main monitor: Metro on monitor 2 (set to 1080p and to duplicate on a TV): This issue only seem to arise when I duplicate the monitor onto the TV. Does anyone have any idea of how to solve this?
