• Create and use intermediate certificate authority on Windows Server 2012?

  Background: Server OS is Windows Server 2012. GUI is installed as we come upto speed with powershell. Setup is staging, not production (yet). We have our (internal, domain limited) Root CA installed. I would like to take the Root CA offline to secure storage but before that I'd like to setup an intermediate CA which can take over actual live, online (int-RA-net) functionality Can someone guide me covering: creating the intermediate CA certificate request installing the intermediate CA certificate on domain controller (certification authority role already installed with Root CA online right now) use the intermediate CA to generate a certificate (any use certificate, just for demonstration purposes) Obviously this certification chain would be invalid on computers outside our domain (self trusted root - our root certificate is NOT from common 3rd parties). This last point is NOT a problem.

• HP Officejet 6000 E609n unexpectedly goes offline

  My local library has a number of Windows Vista SP1 PCs connected to two HP Officejet 6000 E609n wireless printers. Each PC can print to either of the two printers and one of the two printers is the default on each PC. This configuration has worked well over the last year w/o any trouble. Recently, the library staff is reporting that sometimes when patrons try to print, they can't. Closer inspection shows that the the default wireless printer is offline. In order to get the printer online again, the printer has to be restarted. In Control Panel Printers applet, under the Printer menu, the "Use Printer Offline" option is grayed out and there's no way to bring the printer back online w/o restarting it. Does anyone know what's going on here?

• How to compare mp3, flac audio data in a file, ignoring header data (ID3 tag) etc.?

  I've backed up some audio files up in 2 places and added ID3 tags into one backup but not the other, since time has passed my own memory has faded on whether the backups are actually the same, but now one has ID3 data and the other doesn't, basic binary compare will fail and inspection will be cumbersome.   What is the point of finalizing CD/DVDs from user's point of view? First of all does it have any impact on reliability of media or it's just a way to ensure that the content of the disk cannot be changed? I wonder because I use DVDs to store my system backups.

• Are swapped in hot-swap drives allocated the same Windows drive letter each time?

  We are intending on purchasing a dedicated machine to perform the company's backups. We were considering buying the Dell T310, with the theory that we could swap the drives in and out for offsite backup. (As in, take out a drive, put a version a couple of days' old in its place, the old backup is updated to the current version.) One thing that may stymie this, though, is the system changing drive letters as things get moved in and out. Does anyone know whether this happens?

• Where are the netlogon files physically stored?

  I have umpteen backups trying to restore my scripts I had in the netlogon share but when I go to them the folder is empty. Does backup not back those scripts in netlogon up? Is there somewhere I should expect to see the files at besides c:\winnt\sysvol\sysvol\mydomain\scripts? Thank you for any help.

  I'm using kvm and I would like to run ubuntu server on it. My goal is to run db2 database instance for development. Is there ready to use ubuntu qcow2 images online for such purpose? Or should I install it from live cd? I've found this instruction UEC/Images, but at launch I get: $ kvm -fda ${floppy} -drive if=virtio,file=./disk.img -boot a ... Nothing to boot: No such file or directory (http://ipxe.org/...) No more network devices No bootable device. Solution: I havent found pre-installed ubuntu virtual machine image online, so solution is to install it by your self.

• How do I change the default backup folder in Win7?

  I'm using the built-in Windows Backup. The default destination folder (backup location\computer name\Backup Set year-month-day time) is unsuitable for me because I already have got some other files in that location and I'd prefer to keep them there. I found no way to change it. Is it possible to have a backup on the same partition but in a different folder? Or do I have to store backups on a different disk?

• Take all fields in a database table and put them straight into a text file

  I have an database file (mdb) file that contains a dictionary of words. A couple thousand of them. I just need the words (in the order they are already in) put into a text file. Currently they have ID's associated with them (e.g. 1, 2, 3) but I don't need it. I just need the words. What is the best way to do this? Actually, if somebody is able to find a dictionary of English words (something along the lines of a scrabble dictionary) that is free online, I'll accept that too. I just can't seem to find any good ones online.

• Has anyone achieved true differential sync with rsync in ESXi?

  Berate me later on the fact that I'm using the service console to do anything in ESXi... I've got a working rsync binary (v3.0.4) that I can use in ESXi 4.1U1. I tend to use rsync over cp when copying VM's or backups from one local datastore to another local datastore. I've used rsync to copy data from one ESXi box to another but that was just for small files. In now trying to do true differential syncs of backups taken via ghettoVCB between my primary ESXi machine and a secondary one. But even when I do this locally (one datastore to another datastore on the same ESXi machine) rsync appears to copy the files in their entirety. I've got two VMDK's totally 80GB in size, and rsync still takes anywhere between 1 and 2 hours but the VMDK's aren't growing that much daily. Below is the rsync command I'm executing. I am copying locally because ultimately these files will get copied onto a datastore created from a LUN on a remote system.   I'm currently running a Microsoft Server 2008 R2 box and want to utilize Volume Shadow Copy but my development machine doesn't have enough hard drive space for 30 days worth of copies, which is what I am aiming for and currently only have 5 days of backups. I have another Windows XP box and I was wondering if it was possible to remotely store the shadow copy images in my remote XP box. If it isn't possible with the built in Volume Shadow Copy, is there an open source alternative that I can utilize that has the same or similar functionality?

  We have DFS setup using the DFS Management Administrator Tool. I turned on replication in the Distributed File System Administrator Tool as well and this morning we lost tons of files from that share. Please explain to me why this was wrong and if there is anything that can be done to repair it. (No, we don't have backups. We have some shadow copies, but those were deleted as well. We have been using DFS as its own backup)

• How do I get the best quality screenshot for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and what tool would

  I'm trying to get some data into a text file from screenshots. Apparently screenshots don't work very well with OCR because they are 75dpi and the minimum for good quality OCR is 150dpi. Does anyone know how what the best way to be taking screenshots for OCR would be? And also, what the best OCR software for doing this would be? Right now I'm getting pretty good results with the free online tools such as new-ocr but it does make mistakes that I have to correct every now and then. So I'd like some tips. UPDATE: I tested out ABBYY screenshot and it was pretty bad... the online tools are better

• How to migrate the data directory for MSSQL Server?

  I have an installation of MSSQL where I would like to move the data directory to another drive so that all the existing databases are located there and all new databases are created there, as well as the backups, logs, etc. I know I can detach/attach the existing databases, but what about the rest of the settings (backup, new databases)? • Windows 2008 additional disk going offline with reboots on Amazon EC2

  OK, so I took the stock Windows 2008 64-bit Amazon AMI and wanted to add a D: drive for page file space and crash dumps. I launched the instance with a second EBS volume attached as xvdf and went into Disk Management set it online, and added the page file and crash dump settings and all that works. But when I reboot, the box comes back up with that second drive as "Offline." How do I get that disk to automatically come online on reboot (or most notably, when I turn this into an AMI and launch more instances off it - I've tried that too and same deal with the D:).

• Why did my zpool replace never finish and what should I do now?

  I have a ZFS zpool with two disks in a mirror configuration, da0 and da1. da1 failed, and so I replaced it with da2 using zpool replace BearCow da1 da2 This ran for a few hours, during which zpool status showed that the array was being resilvered. When that finished, zpool status showed that the resilver was completed, but the array was still degraded...   I've set up mrtg using the online manual and the only online tutorial I found on the subject of thresholds, and the threshold just isn't firing. In my mrtg.cfg file, the relevant lines are ThreshDir: /path/to/mrtg/thresh ThreshMaxI[performance]: 1 ThreshMaxO[performance]: 1 ThreshProgI[performance]: /path/to/mrtg/scripts/alert.php ThreshProgO[performance]: /path/to/mrtg/scripts/alert.php The paths are right, because if I enter the paths wrong I get an error on executing mrtg. websitePerformance checks how long it takes to download the homepage, in milliseconds, so it should be exceeding the max every time. Alert.php is working fine when invoked directly from the shell, and when I point to a nonexistent script it tells me the script is not executable. No error messages are being generated, that I can find. The thresh directory is always empty. Why isn't the threshold being triggered by results that are greater than 1? Anyone have any suggestions?

• Disconnected from WiFi, Windows claims otherwise [closed]

  I'm connected via wifi to my ISP's router/modem. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access. Is there a tool that can tell me which program, if any, is disconecting me ?

I took the fault module (hostv32.dll) and scanned it with avast but it found no threat. I also ran a SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt and it didn't find any corrupted files. This problem is in all two user accounts in this computer (Windows 7). There was one time where task manager seemed to work, but when I closed it and opened it again, it crashed. Any reason/solution to this problem?

  How is backup done on ubuntu servers? I have a server (Ubuntu 9.10) which has apache2 installed, php5, mysql etc... The website is a classifieds website where all classifieds are stored in mysql and Solr. I need to backup this server with all information to be able to fully restore it if something goes wrong.
