  • ProFTPD / PAM issues with new centos/virtualmin install

    I just installed CentOS 5.4 on a rackspace cloud server and installed virtualmin which all seemed to go fine. The only problem I have is that I can not access the virtual servers directories via FTP. I get the following from filezilla: Status: Connecting to 1.1.1.1:21...   • Speedup vmware esx guest hdd access

    Hello, we run several windows servers and windows clients on our vmware esx. One of the Windows 2003 Servers is a build-server with major HDD-reads/writes. as it is our build server. This machine was a hardware before and was virtualized to the ESX. Is there any way to increase the HDD-Performance? Perhaps there are special windows (guest) drivers? The files are stored on a Raid6 base. Performance graph of vmware infrastructure client shows reads up to 650 KBps and writes up to 4000 KBps. Thank you. Regards, Uwe

  • Overhead of Perfmon -> direct to SQL Database

    HI All, First up, I'm a total newb at Performance Monitoring. I'm looking to set up central performance monitoring of some boxes. 2K3 TS ( Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) 2K8 R2 ( XenApp 6 = Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) File Server ( Standard File I/O ) My ultimate aim is to get as many counters/information, without impacting the clients session experience at all. Including counters specific to their sessions. I was thinking it logging directly to a SQL on another server, instead of a two part process of blg file then relog to sql. Would that work ok? Does anyone know the overhead of going straight to SQL from the client? I've searched around a bit, but havent found so much information it can be overwhelming. thanks

  • Having issues with flickering output to TV from Windows 7 laptop

    I cannot tell why this is happening. I cannot get a pattern as to when it happens. Sometimes, I watch entire Hulu content without any interruptions. Other times, it happens 2-3 times in a span of 3 minutes. Then it stops for 10-15 minutes. Lenovo T410s Integrated graphics: Intel HD Graphics (Driver=8.15.10.2253, Video BIOS=2026.1) TV is a Zenith (does not happen with other laptop so doubt it's TV) TV connected to laptop using HDMI-to-DVI cable (previously was connected directly via DVI but I bought a new cable and it's still happening) Anyone could help me troubleshoot this? I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need more information, I'll be glad to provide it.

  • Continuing permissions issues - ASP.net, IIS 7, Server 2008 - 0x80070005 (http 500.19) error

    I created an ASP.net MVC developed web application and I am trying to set up IIS. The Error: Http error 500.19, error code 0x80070005, Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions, config file: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\BudgetManagerMain\BudgetManager\web.config If I set the AppPool to use 'administrator' i have no problems and can access the site just fine. If i set to NETWORK SERVICE (or anything else including self-created admin or non-admin user accounts), i get the above error. Things I have tried: identity for Application pool named 'test' is 'NetworkService' Set full access privs for wwwroot and all children files/folders verified effective permissions and NETWORK SERVICE has full access. Authentication on my site is set for anonymous and running under Application Pool Identity I do not have any physical path credentials set on the website confirmed website is set to run under the application pool named 'test' using Process Monitor, here is a summary of what i found on the ACCESS DENIED event EVENT TAB: Class: File System Operation: CreateFile Result: Access Denied Path: ..\web.config Desired Access: Generic Read Disposition: Open Options: Sybnchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory file Attributes: N ShareMode: Read AllocaitonSize: n/a PROCESS TAB ...lots of stuff that seems irrelevant User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

  • How To Fix Samba File Permission Issues in Mac OSX

    I've had this problem for a long time, here is the basics of it... I use a mixed environment of Windows 7/8 computers with Mac OSX Lion/Mountain Lion. Whenever a Windows computer creates a file on a SMB share on the Mac it no longer has group permissions, only the person who created or updated it can access it. My solution has been to go onto the Mac system and reset permissions for the entire directory structure then everyone can see it again. About the only thing on this that I can find was for OSX pre Snow Leopard that mentioned editing the SMB.CONF file to fix their particular problem (similar to mine, http://www.gladsheim.com/blog/2009/09/19/osx-leopard-and-samba-permissions/). The problem is that now Lion and Mountion Lion no longer have an SMB.CONF file (another web search pointed to the com.apple.smbd.plist (http://kidsreturn.org/?s=smb.conf) but it's an XML file now and I'm not clear on what should be done to THAT to fix the problem. So, short of me writing an Applescript to run every hour to fix permissions, does anyone know a solution to this very frustrating problem?   • Issues with partitions WIN 7

    I was trying to make some space to install linux in my HP notebook. The computer had 4 partitions, I made space shrinking one and created a new one (facepalm) using the windows partitioning tool. It show me some warning message saying something about dynamic partitions, I ingored it, and went to the linux live CD. I installed linux in the new partition, after the installation completed it told me that GRUB cannot be installed I dont remember why. So now, it doesnt boot, neither windows nor linux. After google for a while I found the diskpart command, it gives me this info: DISKPART> list disk DISK ### Status -------- --------------- DISK 0 Invalid DISKPART> select disk 0 DISKPART> select partition Partition ### TYPE ------------- -------------- Partition 1 Dynamic Data Partition 2 Dynamic Data Partition 3 Dynamic Data Partition 4 Primary <- I think I put linux here Any idea whats happening?   • Focus issues in OSX Spaces

    Spaces rarely returns focus to my last used window. Haven't been able to peg universally reproducible steps, but spend any time switching among spaces and windows and you'll come across this. It often happens with finder windows. I'm thinking this is because osx treats Finder as a single app, so bringing finder forward in one space brings it forward in all spaces. Extremely annoying! Anyone have a fix for this?

  • Microsoft ISA 2006 Log Extraction Issues

    Hi, We have a client running ISA2006 with logs going to MSDE. The MSDE database gets rotated. We have NO control over the client infrastructure. We need to get the logs out to a TEXT file on the server itself which will be forwarded to a remote server by other software we already have in place. My first thought was doing it via Stored Procs. Another option is vbscript? The actual table holding the logs has no primary key or other identifier so I think the dump should be done once a day for the previous day, but ideally it should run several times a day. Any ideas?

  • Connection issues with Linksys WRT54GL / Tomato

    So I recently purchased a new router, and decided to put Tomato on it for some of the fancy features, like graphs. Only problem is, now I've installed it I can't connect to the internet any more! What I've done so far is plug the router in, connect to it wirelessly, and upgrade the firmware to the right version for my router. This went swimmingly, the router restarted, and everything's Tomatoey. Except it won't, now, connect to the internet, and I'm entirely unsure what I've missed. My old router was a BT Homehub, my ISP is BT (British Telecommunications). I'm a bit lost, this is the first time I've done any of this 3rd party firmware stuff.

    I'm trying to rsync a few external hard drives over to my new Nas DS412+ but I'm noticing it's stupid slow. I'm trying it via mounting the backup folder via afb on a Mac. I was told this may be the wrong way to do it. I recently just turned on "network backup" on the Synology and am now running rsync over ssh like: rsync -ar --progress . admin@localip:/backup/path Is this the right way to do it now? Will it be faster? Is there something else I can do to make it faster? Edit: I'm getting a ton of: "failed to set permissions" "failed to set times" now that I run it. What do I do?

  • Windows 7 64bit keyboard issues

    I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

  • Troubleshooting certificate issues

    I'm trying to access my (European Parliament) Webmail from a Linux/Firefox machine at the following address and I get security warning messages explaining that the identity of the site cannot be verified (the error message is in french). But this only happens with Linux/Firefox from one machine. Here's the address: https://webmail.europarl.europa.eu/ (and I'm trying to access it from my home, not from the EP). And here's the detailed error message: webmail.europarl.europa.eu utilise un certificat de sécurité invalide. Le certificat n'est pas sûr car l'autorité délivrant le certificat est inconnue. (Code d'erreur : sec_error_unknown_issuer) So basically, if I translate, it is telling that the webmail.europarl.europa.eu certificate is invalid because the authority that delivered the certificate is unknown. I do only get this invalid certificate thing on Linux/Firefox. From a MacBookPro running Safari, I go to what looks like the correct webmail login page. From the same Linux machine, but using another user account and Chrome instead of Firefox, I go to what looks like the correct webmail login page. So there are several possibilities, here are a few ones: Firefox is right and my Linux box has been hacked Firefox is right and detecting something that neither Chrome nor Safari is detecting (like, say, my router that may be hacked) Safari on the MacBook Pro and Chrome on Linux are both correct and it is just Firefox on Linux that is wrongly stressing me when everything is normal. How do I know which one of these possibilities (or any other) is correct? How can I troubleshoot what is going on with either Linux/Firefox or with the parliament's webmail?

  • HA Proxy won't load balance my web requests. What have I done wrong?

    I've finally got HA Proxy set up and running in a way I think I want. However, it is not load balancing the web requests it receives. All requests are currently being forwarded to the first server in the cluster. I'm going to paste my configuration below - if anyone can see where I may have gone wrong, I'd appreciate it. This is my first stab at configuring web servers in a *nix environment. First up, I have HA Proxy running on the same host as the first server in the apache cluster. We are moving these servers to virtual later on, and they will have different virtual hosts, but I wanted to get this running now. Both web servers are receiving their health checks, and are reporting back correctly. The haproxy?stats page correctly reports servers that are up and down. I've tested this by altering the name of the file that is checked. I haven't put any load onto these servers yet. I've just opened up the URLs on several tabs (private browsing), and had several co-workers hit the URL too. All of the traffic goes to WEB1.   • LAMP server VM issues

    After getting a recommendation to salvage a wiki by installing a LAMP server, I went on the prowl for a good virtualized one. I used the VMware Player version. Since the windows box has Bonjour, I can, for example, go to http://lamp.local. and it works see the web client. The problem is, I can't ssh to a directory to scp the files I need, mount a usb thumbdrive (usbfs is unsupported) nor get samba working. I can't even update the ubuntu installation, it fails. I've tried bridged, nat and host-only networking settings in VMware Player. Bridged gives me an undefined IP, while the other two each have different IPs. All three settings allow me to access the web config, but none of them give me samba access. Windows usually freezes, then reports that it cannot connect. I'd rather not wipe a box to do a dedicated install, is there I way I can get this VM working, or are there better LAMP VMs out there? This one came already working and set up with VMware Player, so I thought it would be perfect... Thanks,

  • Active Directory LDAP and user issues (using apache2 for svn access)

    I currently have a setup where I work that lets users use their active directory domain logins and passwords to authenticate and authorize access to Subversion. Currently I need to allow application accounts the same access. So our IT group creates application accounts in the active directory for us to use. But they want to be "secure" so they set the "Workstations Allowed" to be only a limited number of workstations. So when an application account hits the apache2 server for authentication they can't login for some reason and I'm having a heck of a time trying to debug.     I just heard about using hdparams to optimize the Hard Disk Performance of a server ? Is this common practice ? What file systems do you use ? I generally deploy on the second last release of Ubuntu for stability reasons, do you some other filesystems or use distributed file systems from the get go ? Do the hdparam settings change for different File systems ? I haven't tried this yet, so how much difference do changes like this make ?

  • Internet Connection Sharing/FTP issues

    I am currently using a Linux Mint desktop along with a Windows 8 netbook running Internet Connection Sharing to my desktop. On my desktop, I can't access FTP sites, but my laptop can, so I think it might be a porting issue. I can ping the server from Mint, so I know it's up and running, but I can't access it via telnet. On my Windows 8 netbook, I have every protocol checked, including FTP. Originally, the FTP server indicated that "Scotty" (my netbook) was hosting the service, so I tried inputting the IP of my router, 192.168.1.1 to no avail. Any ideas?

  • AD server within another network - DNS issues

    Here's a quick summary of the environment I support: we have a domain (domain A) that has about 20 client computers. The domain server for this domain and all the clients sit within the network infrastructure of a larger domain (domain B). All the computers get their network settings via DHCP from domain B's servers. I have no control and am unable to make changes to anything to do with domain B. The problem I have is that currently in order for my domain's (domain A) clients to be able to resolve the domain server and the shares on it they have their DNS server IP address set to domain A's domain server (via the default GPO). Unfortunately when a laptop (windows and mac) gets taken home, they are still looking for the domain server as their DNS server and obviously can't access the internet correctly outside of our environment. Ideally I need a solution where the machines use domain A's domain server as their DNS when inside the office and use what ever DNS server DHCP gives them when they are outside the office. However, since I have no control over the office DHCP server, I'm not sure how this can be accomplished. Any help and advice that anyone can offer is highly appreciated. Thanks, Harry P.S. The solution I'm trying to find needs to require no involvement from the user.
