• When trying to copy a virtual disk in VMware vSphere client, I get an errror.

  I'm pretty new to all the VMware world, so this is probably mainly a question about the right set of documentation to look at. I'm trying to clone/copy a VM that I installed on an ESXi installation. I was trying to follow along with the top example here: http://serverfault.com/questions/16320/is-there-a-way-to-clone-an-existing-vm-on-an-esxi-server-without-having-to-re-imp However, I'm using the vSphere client to connect to the ESXi box and manage it, and the vSphere client is telling me it won't let me rename the vmdk file. The real answer I want is how do I clone the VM I installed if I want to spin up 5 copies. Is there another utility I can use to copy the vmdk file, then create a new virtual machine using it? Any idea why they nerfed the feature in vSphere client?

• Can a virtual mikrotik box bridge a hyper-v internal network with a hyper-v external network?

  I am trying to set up a Mikrotik router as a transparent firewall on my network. I got the machine working on a hardware MT box, but my boss wants the MT virtualized. I have been trying the set up where my virtual windows box talks to the Mikrotik via private or internal network on the Hyper-V host. I can get the two machines to talk, but as soon as I set up a bridge on the MT, all traffic ceases between the two. Is it possible to create a bridge for this purpose (having the MT silently in front of my firewalled server)? I could really use some help.

• Howto return to virtual machine when remote desktop hangs?

  I'm using a vmware virtual machine running ubuntu linux and from there I connect to a Windows XP machine using rdesktop through a VPN tunnel. This configuration is given and cannot be changed. From time to time my internet connection does a reconnect. Then the running rdesktop (running in fullscreen mode) process freezes and isn't usable anymore. Now I want to return to the underlying linux and restart the rdesktop process. But I'm not able to get out of fullscreen rdesktop mode and so I cannot access the ubuntu desktop to kill any process. My solution is to reboot the vmware and start the rdesktop again. Is there a better way to get the configuration running again after a freeze? EDIT: I have no admin rights for the linux system. Everything must be done with user rights.

• Virtualmin - Added Virtual Server - Stopped access to Rails app?

  Hi, Sorry if this sounds pretty simple, I'm new to Virtualmin and running servers in general. I recently purchased a VPS and installed Virtualmin with no problems. I then installed mod_rails and uploaded my first rails app, which I got working by adding the following to my apache httpd.conf file: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName testing.mydomain.com DocumentRoot /home/myapp/public <Directory /home/myapp/public> Allow from All AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> RailsBaseURI / </VirtualHost> I then tried adding a virtual server through Virtualmin, using mydomain.com. Now, the site this created (plus several sub-servers) and working as expected. However, my original Rails app is no longer accessible. The URL now sends me to the parent application (ie mydomain.com) The Rails app is not located within the parent's application directory, would this be a problem? Can anyone help? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

  I have VirtualBox on Windows 7. I have two virtual machines running RHEL, that work fine when the network is set to NAT. However I want to change the network adapters for the VM's to bridged in stead of NAT. However when I go in to the VM configuration, and select bridged I also need to select an adapter, but there is nothing to select. Apparently I need to install a separate driver/filter on the network adapter. However I don't know where to start. I reinstalled VirtualBox (latest version) but did not see an option to install such driver. What should I do?

  Is it possible to have a separate php.ini file that overrides the default php.ini file for each virtual host? I'm running Apache/2.2.14, PHP 5.3.2-1.   My new laptop has a big 16:9 screen, and I'm finding it hard to fully utilize it during the 95% of the time that I'm not watching HD movies on it. I'd like to set it up as a kind of virtual dual screen by splitting the physical screen into two workspaces. I know I could arrange my windows manually, but I'd like to be able to maximize a window and have it only consume half the monitor, and have its pop up dialogs centered on its half-screen, that sort of thing.   Our security policy does not permit ftpd on our servers. Our trusted developers use ftps to access our webservers and they have full access to the server. How do we grant limited access to a single untrusted developer for an existing virtual host. Ive configured rssh to only allow sftp to our untrusted developer, but we dont want him browsing around our other sites. I've investigated chroot, but it seems overly complex and more for restricting access to their home folders. I want to limit access to /srv/www/vhostx/ and below. Whats the best solution?

  Hello, We are trying to deploy a Business Continuity Appliance (Zenith BDR) for a customer and one of the features is the ability to bring up the failed server in a virtual machine on the appliance. Great feature. However, the customer has OEM version of Server 2003 on that server and it comes up requiring immediate re-activation since it is now on different hardware. We would be happy with a 2-3 day grace period which is what we expected, but this isn't happening. What are the solutions without having to purchase another VLK copy of Server 2008 and re-installing the server with that license just so we can set this thing up.

• Nginx. How do I reject request to unlisted ssl virtual server?

  I have a wildcard SSL certificate and several subdomains on the same ip. Now I want my nginx to handle only mentioned server names and drop connection for others so that it'd look like nginx is not running for unlisted server names (not responding, rejecting, dead, not a single byte in response).   I want to force ssl client verification for on of my virtual hosts. But get "No required SSL certificate was sent" error, trying to GET something from it. Probably, it is implossible to use ssl_verify_client on the same IP? Should I bind these servers to different IPs, will it solve my problem?

Is this price charged as number of hours of computation done on the VM or number of hours of running the VM? And if I shutdown the VM, will I be charged anything?

  I'm currently using VirtualBox on my Linux server to run a small Windows guest OS. I've configured its main virtual hard drive as what VBox calls "Immutable" - meaning that any changes to it are written into a differencing image that is discarded when the system reboots. Can KVM do something similar? I've read about snapshots via "savevm", "loadvm" but I believe that's saved states, not differencing images. What I ultimately want is a VM with two drives: one reverts on each reboot, one keeps its changes. Ideally, the unchangeable drive image should be stored with only read access granted to the user running KVM.

• How do I access files inside a Wubi virtual ext4 Ubuntu partition from within Windows?

  I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi on a PC that has Windows XP and Windows 7 installed. I was working in it for a while and everything is just fine. However, when I booted back into Windows 7, I couldn't figure out a way to access the files I had created or downloaded into the Ubuntu partition. They're in a virtual disk called root.disk in my C:\ubuntu\disks. Is there a way I can mount this vhd into Windows or at least browse the contents and extract what I need?

  Hi I am looking into Identity managment in our environment. We currently use Active Directory and Sun's Enterprise Directory server (6.3). I was wondering if I used the Virtual Directory Server of the Enterprise Directory server, would we be able to point the vCenter clients to this Directory service for authentication and authorization rather than at the AD source. The reason for this is that we have more users we want to add to the management role of this server but not all are in AD, a fair number are in the Sun LDAP v3. directory. Thanks in advance Ian

  I setup virtual pc with the Windows XP IE6 VHD to test a site on Windows 7 host. I created a loopback adapter connection on the host. I have several sites on IIS 7.5, I'm able to connect to all of them except one. And it's the site I need to test... I get "The page cannot be displayed" error. The site loads fine from the host(Windows 7). I've made sure the permissions match that of the other sites that do load. I've recreated the application in IIS manager. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly.   I am running vsftpd with Virtual Users (managed through a MySQL db). Each users home/default directory is owned by vsftpd:vsftpd. I need to give a user read/write permissions to some website files, owned by apache:apache so they can make some changes. I did a bind mount for the web directory to a directory in the ftp user's home/default directory. When logging in, the user is not able to write to the web folder, unless I set files to 777. Is it possible to set this up with making the directory and it's files 777? The web directory needs to be apache:apache in order for apache to work with it.

• Running OpenVZ virtual servers within a Xen XCP vritual server? Bad practice?

I have a server control panel software that I want to use and it allows the administration via a web interface for Openvz machines. My questions are: Would this be considered bad practice?   I'm currently on my placement year at uni with 4 months left. Before working at my current place, I have not used a nix environment for web development and have used WAMP. Over the past year I have found some very interesting new tech that requires a bit more than my shared hosting even to play with (eg node.js, RoR 3). At work we use a Virtual Machine for development, but that's all been set up and configured to match the live servers, and is managed with a Puppet server. Are there any really good resources for setting up and configuring an Ubuntu VM as a web server? Work currently uses Ubuntu so I would assume this is a good OS to use. I do of course know how to use google, but the noise ratio is just too big, so thought I'd ask here, as I know many of you will have a ton of bookmarks. Cheers.

  Does it matter whether or not I include the www. sub-domain when creating new virtual hosts on apache? So is this? /etc/apache2/sites-available/www.example.com better than this? /etc/apache2/sites-available/example.com I would assume I'd need to a2ensite either www.example.com or example.com. Depending on whichever method used? This might be a a fairly basic question But, I have no one else to ask. And, want to do it right.
