• Large .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp

  I have a Windows 2008 server which functions as a web service server, and every other week or so, the C:\Windows\Temp folder is filled with large (between 40-300 meg) files with names like: ~DF5D73.tmp, ~DFA95.tmp, etc. They appear My webservices on the server don't create any files with that type of name, and the contents don't appear to help identify them. Process Explorer indicates that w3wp.exe is currently using several of the files, but I can't imagine specifically where they're coming from. • Screen goes grey in Remote Desktop Connection from windows 7 to ubuntu server

  I recently got a 64 bit ubuntu server based on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 "Precise Pangolin". However I can't seem to connect to it properly from my windows 7 64 bit machine. I can get to the login screen for ubuntu, and it seems to succeed in logging in, but then the screen just goes grey before anything comes up. (too low rep to post a picture) I installed xrdp on the server and attempt to connect using the standard windows Remote Desktop Connection program. I also ran the following 2 commands on the ubuntu machine to try get it to run but it was no help. echo "gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d" > ~/.xsession and sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

  How I can limit UDP/TCP packets per IP send to my host (or better PORT) per second or minute ? Would be nice to ban that IP for 12/24 hours or even for ever. I got Windows Server 2008 and I'm very poor in Windows administration but quite good in Linux. EDIT: By basic problem is that They sending a lot of rubbish UPD and TCP packets.. TCP packets without SYNCH, fragmented UDP packets so my servers stop responding.. So I need to cut off users (IPs) sending more than X packets per second. I need solution witch provides me, somehow, configurable: X packets of certain type (UDP, TCP or both - lets say parameter named Z ) are allowed to be received by IP on Y port, otherwise this packet should be DROPPED. My virtual hosts are hosted by VirtualBox and I'm able to forward all incoming packets certain type and certain port to the specific Virtual Host, but I need to DROP them before my VirtualBox receive them.

The Microsoft pages seem consistent on the most important points: 1 GB of system memory 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum) In my experience sometimes these recommendations are accurate. (For example, I have a Windows XP in VirtualBox that generally behaves well running in the stated minimum).   I am accessing a specific network path on another domain. It looks something like this: \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\Website\ In under 30 seconds, I am automatically jumped back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\ In less time it then jumps back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\ Then it jumps back to c$ for its final resting place. \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\ At first I thought this had to with a faulty keyboard, but this behaviour also occurs when the window does not have focus. It's as if windows thinks that the folder no longer exists (as in someone else has deleted or moved it). This behaviour is not specific to my PC either, it occurs from other machines in the office. Edit: It looks like this issue only occurs from other Windows 7 machines. There are no issues accessing the path from XP.

  When viewing the list of network computers in Windows Explorer on a Win 7 machine there appears to be no way of readily seeing the description field, which makes that pretty well useless. I believe this problem started with Vista but I'm seeing it for the first time because I was fortunate enough to skip over Vista. We're currently rolling out Win 7 on new boxes and although I'm changing the naming system to something more sensible, the old boxes have names such as FWS01, FWS02, etc. Managing a network of computers with such names is made more difficult when you can't readily see who's machine each one is. Googling the problem brought up a workaround involving creating a shortcut on an XP machine and copying that to the Win 7 box but that's a long way from ideal. Is there some kind of hack that can be applied to machines, the operator of which needs to be able to see the description field?

• Windows 7 PC refuses to join domain

  So, we're wiping clean all PCs at our office and migrating them to a new server cluster and a new domain. Last night I tested on PC and it mostly worked except it refuses to join to the domain. Now, our domain is named like EXAMPLE.COM. When I just type EXAMPLE the PC can't find the domain controller, even though I can ping it find. If I type EXAMPLE.COM it seems to work. How can I get it to work with just EXAMPLE? That's how I got all the new servers int he cluster to work (about 20 of them) and I haven't had any issues... The only difference between the Windows 7 PC(s) and the servers is that the clients will be on a 10.0.3.X network where as the servers are on a 10.0.1.X network. Oh, the domain controller and all the other servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Suggestions will be highly appreciated!

  Is it possible to do an in-place upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 using only Remote Desktop? My plan is to extract WS 2012 installation iso file to C:\WS2012 and run the setup. After restart Remote Desktop connection will be lost, but will it be restored later? Is setup going to automatically install everything, restart, run WS 2012 and start listening for RDP connections? Server is rented and I would like to save the KVM fee. I read here that it's possible to upgrade WS 2008 to WS 2008 R2 like that. Thanks!

• Windows 7 automatically rearranges the start menu

  I've seen so many messages on how to rearrange the Windows Start Menu and none mentioning the real problem in doing so which has been around since XP at least. I go to ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu and have a day making everything the way I want. For one thing, their Maintenance menu, the Accessories menu and the Administrative Tools menu, I like to put under a Tools folder that I've created. And they seem to move OK. However, within a few hours, I see some of the shortcuts have been moved back or copied back and a new copy of these folders suddenly appears again on my Start Menu at the root. This is maddening and no one seems to even notice in all the tutorials I've read. Anyone know how to change this behavior?

• VMware virtual network adapters and Windows Firewall

  I am running VMware Workstation 7.1.4 on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1-U (x64). Aside from the physical network adapter, I have created a single virtual network adapter (VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1) which is connected to (can be seen by) the host and the guests. My problem is, even after applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak to the virtual adapter, making it disappear from the Network and Sharing Center, I still can't connect to programs running in the host from the guests, unless I specifically "allowed the program to communicate with the public network" using the Windows Firewall (which I don't want to do). This happens to all the programs and services running in the host (File and Printer Sharing, Database server, HTTP proxy, etc.) I am getting the impression that applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak only hides a network from the Network and Sharing Center but not actually making it private. Any hints and suggestions?

  Hi Server Fault, I have a Windows Server 2008 box running as a Domain Controller. I have noticed in my Cisco ASA firewall logs that this box is continuously sending out (like a thousand requests a second) requests on TCP port 445 to external hosts. I have made an effort to deny this outbound traffic from getting on the internet (using the ASA), however I would like these requests to stop from even occurring at all. I have tried disabling TCP/IP over NetBIOS. I have even turned on Windows Advanced Firewall on the box itself to block outbound 445 but the ASA still detects this particular traffic hitting it. I have other DC's and similar type boxes which are not behaving the same way as this box. Is this normal? Is there a way to stop this spamming? Have I been infected? Thank you universe.

  My install of Windows Media Center won't play MSN Video Player videos. They appear in the main guide, but when I click on them, nothing happens. If I look on the main menu, I don't have any icons for MSN Video player there. People have suggested I try downloading updates, but that makes no difference. I have internet connectivity. My region is set to the UK (which is where I am). If I navigate to the MSN Video Player using Internet Explorer, the videos play fine. The machine is an Acer Revo RL100, running Windows 7 64-bit.   When I choose the "Create System Image" option in Windows Backup & Restore, it says that it will take system image of my C:\ and V:\ partitions. My Windows 7 is installed on V: and I use C:\ for taking backups. Now, my question is, is it possible to ignore taking backup of C:\ partition? I only want to get a copy of system image of V: By the way, I used to have Vista on my C:\ partition sometime ago and I formatted it recently to use the partition for taking backups.

  A Windows 2003 Terminal Server keeps time perfectly until a Windows 7 Home client connects. Then it gains time at a rate of several seconds per minute. The client connects through a firewall with only the RDP port open. The client runs the same apps on the terminal server that XP clients run with no issues. Using the Microsoft Terminal Server Client application copied to the W7 computer from an XPsp3 computer gives the same results. Current workaround is to sync time every 5 minutes. Any better ideas?

  I'm new to Windows (former Mac user) and using Windows 7 for about two months now. I almost exclusively use the taskbar to navigate to files (i.e., I press the Win/meta key and start typing... my libraries and naming conventions make it pretty easy to get the correct file). Then I press enter and the file opens. Awesome. But sometimes I want to see the file in its folder (i.e., maybe I want to rename, move, copy, etc.). To do this I need to mouse/trackpad over and right click to get the "Open in file location" options. Is there another way, short of searching for the folder name instead? Is there a hotkey/shortcut for "Open file location"? Thanks!

  I had some jobs to be moved from the old production server (windows 2003 server standard) to the new machine (windows 2008 server standard), but the new server is unable to read the old .job format, also the import wizard only imports from .xml job files (same version). Obviously I don't want to rebuild all the jobs by hand, but can't find a tool that makes the process a very little easier. I don't trust in Microsoft for this kind of tools, my previously experiences had been to bad (DTS - SSIS). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I don't have the kind of data usage with my ISP to re-download this much data again, until next month (total GB will be higher as time goes on). I know there is Windows Easy Transfer, but it is not so much my data itself I'm worried about, it is more having to re-download and install a bunch of games and applications. Is it possible to perform an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without this loss?

  I have a server running Windows Server 2008. I'm using Windows Server Auditing to check when and by which user a folder is modified to determine who is modifying it as the modifications are causing problems. I can see the log of the audit when a change is made in the System log. How do I create a Custom View that will return all events from System log where a certain text (which is the folder name) is present? The create custom view doesn't seem to have that option. I'm not sure whether it's possible via custom xml query or whether I'll need to export the system log to csv and search in Excel. John

  Windows 7 continues the practice of saving user actions in the registry. I'd like to disable this practice both to avoid reg-file fragmentation and SSD wear, as well as being uncomfortable with programs being able to quickly analyze my usage habits. Even with the "Turn off user tracking" policy enabled, there are at least two areas that still contain user tracking: HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\MuiCache This key stores a cache of most-recently accessed strings, including most-recently ran exe descriptions. MKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft Windows\Shell\BagMRU This directory stores the most recently viewed folders along with timestamps. Are there additional policy settings/registry entries to disable these writes? If not, is it possible to make these entries Volatile? Would it be practical to create a temporary hive (eg, on ramdisk) and map it over this location?
