• How do I create a Unicode databases in PostgreSQL 8.4?

  I installed the postgresql-8.4 package with default options. Everything worked fine, however I can't seem to manage to create unicode databases: -- This doesn't work createdb test1 --encoding UNICODE -- This works createdb test2 The error message, createdb: database creation failed: ERROR: new encoding (UTF8) is incompatible with the encoding of the template database (SQL_ASCII) is a bit puzzling because (afaik) I don't use a template for creating the new db, or is it implicitely referring to the default "postgres" database for some reason ? Or maybe I'm missing a setting in a .conf file ?

• No battery status icon

  I recently upgraded to 11.10 from 11.04, everything went fine, still hate unity and all that. But my battery status is not showing up at all, even on my laptop. There isn't even any spaces for it, there is only the Mail Icon, Wirelesss Icon, Sound, Time, [username] and Power. I have tried several different things to get it, but I am at a loss. Please help I've already tried to install indicator-power and it is installed.

• Three's mobile broadband

  I've recently downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 and it seems great I just can't get my three ireland mifi dongle to work at all. When I plug it in, it only recognizes it as a storage devise. Any idea's of how establish a permanent connection to this mifi dongle? I'm in Ireland and running a Dell Inspiron 1520 with 3gb of ram and using the huawei E586 mifi device. Really want to continue using this os but is everything this complicated to get up and running on it?

  i was tryin to connect my ubuntu toshiba satalite L650 laptop with my desktop via a network cable so that i can share things and remotely control the desktop from the laptop, i googled the problem out and found a guide page , i followed all the steps , i installed samba, i had the two computer have the same workgroup name , i had everything correct, but i still dont see connection estbalished between the two computers, (neither one is visible to the other) what is missing ? thanx in advance.

• Making a clone of a game legal?

  My question is similar to a previous question. Consider the following clone of starcraft. Change the artwork, sound, music, change the names of units. However, leave the unit hitpoints unchanged, unit damage unchanged, unit movement speed unchanged, change ability names but not ability effects. Is that considered illegal? In other words is copying the unit hp, dmg, etc. considered illegal even if everything else is changed.

• A way to store potentially infinite 2D map data?

  I have a 2D platformer that currently can handle chunks with 100 by 100 tiles, with the chunk coordinates are stored as longs, so this is the only limit of maps (maxlong*maxlong). All entity positions etc etc are chunk relevant and so there is no limit there. The problem I'm having is how to store and access these chunks without having thousands of files. Any ideas for a preferably quick & low HD cost archive format that doesn't need to open everything at once?

• Oredev 2012: Summary and source code

  This week, I had the pleasure to be invited to talk at Oredev, a really cool conference taking place in Malmo, Sweden. The whole event is awesome, including a very special dinner on Monday including sauna and swimming in a 6 degrees cold Baltic sea, and a reception with dinner at the town hall, including the mayor himself. Considering Malmo is a town of 300'000 inhabitants, it is a pretty nice occasion and the historical building itself is really worth seeing. For those interested, I placed my pictures on my Flickr account. I had a workshop on Tuesday morning about Windows 8 development with XAML/C#, and then a session on Wednesday about MVVM in Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, of course using MVVM Light. I was very nervous because I reworked some of my demos as recently as this morning, in the wake of the Build conference last week and the release of both the Windows Phone SDK and MVVM Light V4.1. Everything went well however, and if I judge by the people I talked t after the talk, and Twitter, everything went pretty well. Before my talk on Tuesday, I had the pleasure to see a talk by Iris Classon (@irisclasson) on the challenges of being a "n00b" and a woman in software development. I especially appreciated her research and conclusions on the lack of women I our industry, a topic that is dear to my heart (because I want the best possible future for my two daughters, and also because I really enjoy working with women on projects, and getting a different insight on the art of software development. I really want to thank the excellent organization committee for their hard work and their fantastic welcome to Malmo. In particular Emily Holweck did a wonderful job and was super helpful throughout the preparation and the conference itself. I made a few pictures during my stay, all with the new Nokia Lumia 920, and hope you will enjoy them too. The source code and the slides… The source code is available for download from Skydrive. • Install Ubuntu Desktop from Ubuntu Mini?

  I've installed Ubuntu 12.10 from PXE, using the linux & initrd.gz files and I'd like to update it to Ubuntu Desktop (with unity, the shopping len and everything in between). I've heard that I can do it by installing the 'ubuntu-deskop' meta package, however I wonder if anyone has actually done it and if that's enough to get an identical Ubuntu installation as if I had installed it with the LiveDvd. • Inherit one instance variable from the global scope

  I'm using Curses to create a command line GUI with Ruby. Everything's going well, but I have hit a slight snag. I don't think Curses knowledge (esoteric to be fair) is required to answer this question, just Ruby concepts such as objects and inheritance. I'm going to explain my problem now, but if I'm banging on, just look at the example below. Basically, every Window instance needs to have .close called on it in order to close it. Some Window instances have other Windows associated with it. When closing a Window instance, I want to be able to close all of the other Window instances associated with it at the same time. Because associated Windows are generated in a logical fashion, (I append the name with a number: instance_variable_set(self + integer, Window.new(10,10,10,10)) ), it's easy to target generated windows, because methods can anticipate what assosiated windows will be called, (I can recreate the instance variable name from scratch, and almost query it: instance_variable_get(self + integer). I have a delete method that handles this. If the delete method is just a normal, global method (called like this: delete_window(@win543) then everything works perfectly. However, if the delete method is an instance method, which it needs to be in-order to use the self keyword, it doesn't work for a very clear reason; it can 'query' the correct instance variable perfectly well (instance_variable_get(self + integer)), however, because it's an instance method, the global instances aren't scoped to it! Now, one way around this would obviously be to simply make a global method like this: delete_window(@win543). But I have attributes associated with my window instances, and it all works very elegantly. This is very simplified, but it literally translates the problem exactly: class Dog def speak woof end end def woof if @dog_generic == nil puts "@dog_generic isn't scoped when .woof is called from a class method!\n" else puts "@dog_generic is scoped when .woof is called from the global scope. See:\n" + @dog_generic end end @dog_generic = "Woof!" lassie = Dog.new lassie.speak #=> @dog_generic isn't scoped when .woof is called from an instance method!\n woof #=> @dog_generic is scoped when .woof is called from the global scope. See:\nWoof! TL/DR: I need lassie.speak to return this string: "@dog_generic is scoped when .woof is called from the global scope. See:\nWoof!" @dog_generic must remain as an insance variable. The use of Globals or Constants is not acceptable. Could woof inherit from the Global scope? Maybe some sort of keyword: def woof < global # This 'code' is just to conceptualise what I want to do, don't take offence! end Is there some way the .woof method could 'pull in' @dog_generic from the global scope? Will @dog_generic have to be passed in as a parameter?

• Evolution laggy due to IMAP -profile or due to some odd Sync -issue?

  I'm fighting with Evolution. Basically it's working fine -- but it is very slow to react in certain situations. Helper questions Could it be that changing away from Bonobo has to do with slowing-down? There might be some trouble with the new engine and "asynchronous actions". What to do about it? Are there e.g. any configuration files? I want to get the previous "working mood" back. How can I speed this thing up? Different scenarios when sending a mail, the composer window hangs there inactive for a couple of seconds, everything grayed out. Though there is a green check mark saying it's sent, I'm not sure a) why it's still blocking everything and b) whether I could simply close it without "breaking"/"losing" anything. In earlier versions, the composer window was closing pretty fast, and one could see the message being stored into the local "outbox" until it was sent, and one could immediately continue with the next task. I prefer that behaviour over the current, where I cannot do anything in the application until the window closes. switching between modules. Coming from mail and switching to the address book takes a couple of seconds. Same for switching to the calendar. I read about different "possible causes" and tried a few things: I only have 3 local address books, so no networking should be involved here. To make sure, I switched to offline mode and then tried to access the address book. No noticeable difference. I use 3 Google Calendars. Switching to offline mode made a minor difference, but so minor that it also could be "imagination" since one might have expected this in this case according to some reports, disabling the tasks should help. Well, it didn't in my case, as I don't use them regularly (just two local items stored here) Maybe I should also mention that I'm using the KDE4 desktop (so no Unity or Gnome, though both is installed on the computer). And I did not have this issue before I updated to 12.04.

• GarageBand w/ Git?

  I'm trying to put a GarageBand project under version control with Git, but I've noticed that every time I make changes to my song and try to add and commit, Git claims that "there are no changes to commit" and that "everything is up-to-date." Is this because GarageBand files are binary or something weird that Git can't properly track? Or do I need to add some special flags to my Git commands? Thanks for the help!

• Touch pad 2 finger scroll not working

  I purchased a new Samsung Series 7 laptop, Model: 700Z5B to be exact. I have everything working great using Ubuntu 11.10, the only issue is that the 2 finger scroll on the track pad does not work. Does anyone have any pointers for what I need to do to configure it. I've looked around on the forums and have not found anything that has worked yet. I don't even see the trackpad options under the mouse and touchpad settings area.

• 500 Error on index.php file. All other php files are working well

  I've successfully installed LAMP and created some virtual hosts. Everything is working fine except index.php files. When I try access them, browser returns 500 Error, regardless of their content. All other PHP files are working fine, index.html files can be opened without any errors. Please, help me to resolve this problem. I guess something wrong with server configuration, but I didn't find what exactly.

• ISC-DHCP not providing address
